Clichy looking forward to 'special' Manchester derby
City full-back says his side need to be wary of a United team with a point to prove on Sunday



Manchester City left-back Gael Clichy is no stranger to the intensity of a derby atmosphere after more than a decade in the Barclays Premier League.

The France international experienced numerous inter-London contests during his Arsenal days, most notably the matches against closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

But the 29-year-old feels there is an extra edge when the Blues and Reds clash across the Manchester divide, as they will on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

"There are a lot of derbies in England. I was used to Arsenal against Tottenham and people were telling me [City v United] was a big one," Clichy told www.mcfc.co.uk. "In my experience I can tell you that the one in Manchester is bigger."

United are acclimatising to life under new manager Louis van Gaal and responded to a lacklustre campaign last season by bringing in star quality in the shape of Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria - factors that further heighten the anticipation ahead of this weekend's meeting, according to Clichy.

"This year is going to be special because they have a new manager and it's a team that needs to get points to prove to people that they are still there," he said. "Playing against great players is what we want as a football player. It's going to be a really good game and hopefully we can get the three points."

During the early years of the Barclays Premier League, the all-Manchester fixture was dominated by United, with City's first*victory coming in November 2002.

But Clichy became part of a much changed football landscape in the North West when he swapped the capital for Manchester ahead of the 2011/12 season.

City famously beat United to the title courtesy of Sergio Aguero's last-gasp heroics on the final day of that campaign, but the sides did not seem so closely matched when Clichy had his first experience of the fixture the previous October.

Mario Balotelli unveiled his iconic "Why Always Me" shirt as 10-man United were sensationally defeated 6-1 on their own patch - something that still stands as Clichy's most cherished derby memory.

"Without a doubt [the best was the] 6-1 away at Old Trafford," he said. "I think I've played 13 years now in England and until that game I had never won at Old Trafford.

"So it was a big win for me but also for the fans because I was aware of the support we have and the rivalry between the teams.

"Going to Old Trafford and winning by a five-goal difference was a massive, massive result. It was [only] three points but that was a massive bonus for the fans."

As Chelsea lie six points ahead of the defending champions at the BPL summit following City's 2-1 defeat at in-form West Ham United on Saturday, three points and the local bragging rights by any scoreline on Sunday would suit Clichy and his team-mates just fine.
