Africans seal historic win

Brazil's Internacional suffered a shock defeat to Mazembe in their opening FIFA Club World Cup match as the Congolese side progressed to the final.

Inter, who won the 2006 edition when they beat Barcelona, had been overwhelming favourites to win tonight and set up an anticipated glamour final against Inter Milan of Italy.

However, Milota Kabangu and Dioko Kaluyituka scored second-half goals in the 53rd and 85th minutes for the African champions to obliterate those lofty ambitions and set up a possible clash with Rafael Benitez's team.

Rafael Sobis and Wilson Mathias had chances for the Brazilians in the opening stages, the former firing off target before the latter's effort required saving.

Sobis was looking lively and forced a save out of Muteba Kidiaba before Kabangu had a chance at the other end which Renan saved well. Defender Indio also had a chance saved for Inter.

The crowd in Abu Dhabi were being treated to an entertaining first half as Mathias tried his luck once again before Tinga sent a shot high and wide.

Alecsandro then came into the game and failed with two efforts while Andres D'Alessandro continued to pull the strings from midfield.

Renan saved Kaluyituka's effort and was again equal to a Milota Kabangu attempt, this time from a free-kick.

Mazembe's late first-half flurry continued into the second half.

Kaluyituka fired wide with another effort and, after Alecsandro missed at the other end, Kabangu stunned Inter by breaking the deadlock for the Congolese side with a well-taken finish.

Sobis tried to lead the fightback but was denied by Kidiaba, as was Alecsandro. Giuliano came off the bench and joined the assault but Kidiaba stood firm, before Kaluyituka's excellent performance was rewarded. The midfielder kept his composure to score the clincher to seal the win and send their illustrious opponents crashing out.
