Manchester United’s U18s beat West Brom’s U18s 3-0 at the AON Training Complex in Carrington which means they are now three games undefeated since Paul McGuinness left the club just over a week ago.

United started the game with the same team that drew with Manchester City earlier on in the week. Buffonge started in the number nine role with Callum Gribbin playing in the number 10 role just behind Buffonge. United started the game well dominating the early possession with Callum Gribbin being influential in behind the striker. United controlled the first ten minutes but it was West Brom who almost took the lead but Byrne was there to pull of a good save down to his right hand side. Just five minutes later United took the lead through Dearnley who scored from a tight angle, an excellent finish.

United kept putting the pressure on West Brom however West Brom were looking dangerous on the counter attack using the pace they had on the wings. Just five minutes after that United doubled their lead, Buffonge was brought down in the box, he took the penalty and hit it to the goalkeeper’s left sending the keeper the wrong way. United kept on dominating the game throughout the first half with Gribbin yet again pulling the strings. United couldn’t add anymore goals in the first half, they went in at half time 2-0 up.

In the first few minutes of the second half Byrne was called into action, making two fine saves one from a free kick and the other from open play. United struggled to carry on their domination from the first half with West Brom starting to come into the game more. However 15 minutes the second half United added another goal, this time through the full back Reid. A good finish from the young full back, hitting it to the goalkeeper’s near post.

West Brom carried on their impressive start to the second half, despite been down 3-0. They continued to trouble the United back line Byrne yet again called into action making another good save. As the game entered into the last 15 minutes United started to dominate the game again, holding the possession well. United were making good use of their possession creating chances but unfortunately couldn’t add to the three excellent goals they had scored already.

As we went into the last five minutes of the game West Brom started to put some pressure on the United defence but nothing came of it and the game ended 3-0 to United. A dominant performance from United, scoring 3 good goals and keeping a clean sheet.

Goals : Zachary Dearnley 14′, DJ Buffonge 22′ penalty, Tyler Reid 60′

UNDER-18S: UNITED 3 WEST BROM 0

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 20 February 2016 | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Dearnley 14, Buffonge 22 pen, Reid 60

Manchester United finished the regular Academy programme on a high with a comprehensive 3-0 win over West Brom at the Aon Training Complex.

Tommy Martin oversaw a fine display that made it seven points from the last three games with the Reds looking assured of victory midway through the first half. Although Albion's Kane Wilson powered through the defence to force Oliver Byrne to save with his legs early on, the hosts soon assumed full control.

Zak Dearnley, who scored in the corresponding fixture against the Baggies in August, cut in from the right with a delightful trick to lose his marker and squeezed the ball between Bradley House and his near post from a tight angle.

Charlie Scott slid the ball into the channel to feed Dearnley as he and Callum Gribbin dictated matters in midfield. On 22 minutes, DJ Buffonge was brought down by a combination of House and two defenders and he got up to send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to double the advantage.

Wilson launched another burst forward but fired off target while Byrne had to pull off a reflex stop to deny Chay Scrivens. Any thoughts the points were not safe were soon disregarded, however, as Tyler Reid emerged as a key figure.

The full-back's cross was only partially cleared to Dearnley, whose shot was deflected wide and, from Reid's next raid down the right, following Buffonge's exquisite pass, he delivered a low drive past House for a third. There were more chances for United - Jimmy Dunne headed over a Gribbin corner, Scott forced an outstanding fingertip save out of House and Callum Whelan fired narrowly too high - as this was a confident display.

Dunne did have to clear off the line after initially being outmuscled by the dangerous Wilson but the Reds approach the play-off group, set to include Brighton, Swansea, Southampton and Norwich City, in good heart. United: Byrne; Reid, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon (Makela 72); Scott, Kehinde (Roberts 63); Buffonge (Boonen 63), Gribbin, Whelan; Dearnley. Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Barlow.

Reserves book Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final spot

Manchester United progressed to the Lancashire Senior Cup semi-finals with a smash-and-grab raid at Blackpool.

A youthful side consisting largely of Under-18 players created only one real moment of danger on a dreadful surface at Bloomfield Road but made it count, with lone striker Scott McTominay notching his first goal for Warren Joyce's side.

Captain Dean Henderson made a stunning save on 16 minutes to fingertip a header by Uche Ikpeazu to safety but it was a rare moment of excitement during a scrappy first half. Ikpeazu remained the obvious threat throughout and looped a long-range effort into Henderson's grateful clutches and, when the keeper missed a Connor Oliver free-kick, it drifted wide of the far post.

Tyrell Warren survived a handball shout when blocking a rare shot as all the half-chances came the home side's way. Ikpeazu, on loan from Watford, forced another couple of stops out of Henderson after the break and Oliver had a header scrambled away from inside the six-yard box.

United struggled to trouble Kyle Letheren in the Seasiders' goal although the hard-working Oliver Rathbone launched an ambitious attempt from just inside the Blackpool half that was well off target.

Martin Paterson, one of the experienced campaigners in the hosts' line-up, mustered an overhead kick out of nothing that worked Henderson again before the breakthrough arrived on 71 minutes, against the run of play, soon after the introduction of Callum Gribbin off the bench.

Demi Mitchell's free-kick was cleared but Tyler Reid kept the pressure on with a visionary pass out to the wide man. Mitchell showed his skill to move into the box and a prodded shot forced a parry out of Letheren, to leave McTominay with the simplest of tap-ins from close range.

Paterson headed wide when United failed to clear and the excellent Ro-Shaun Williams made a decent block in injury time as Joyce's charges did enough to set up a last-four tie against Oldham Athletic with Everton already awaiting the victors in the final.

United : Henderson; El Fitouri, Williams, Reid, Warren; Scott, Whelan (Kehinde 61); Doughty (Gribbin 69), Rathbone, Mitchell; McTominay (Dearnley 85).
Subs not used : Dorrington, Buffonge.
Goals : Scott McTominay 70′

Under-18s: Stoke 1 United 2

Manchester United’s youngsters extended the recent unbeaten run with three hard-fought points against Stoke City in the Potteries on Saturday.

Goals from Charlie Scott, in the first half, and Indy Boonen, 13 minutes from time, were sufficient to help the Reds successfully launch the seven-match Merit Group phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

This first fixture in the play-off stage was more like a reunion event with United and Stoke having already met twice, home and away, at this level since the turn of the year. The Reds were aiming to stretch an unbeaten run to four games, but were more than aware that achieving this at Stoke would be no easy task and that is exactly how it turned out.

The opening minutes were evenly balanced as both sides settled into the game until United, in the eighth minute, opened the scoring at the conclusion of a first meaningful attack. DJ Buffonge looked to have made the breakthrough but, after his shot was blocked on the line, Scott struck from the rebound, aided by a slight deflection off fellow defender Jimmy Dunne, to secure the lead.

Stoke almost replied a couple of minutes later but neither Hakim Abdallah or Jacob Twyford could force the ball past United keeper Oliver Byrne. The United no.1 excelled in the latter stages of the first half as Stoke went in search of an equaliser. Several times, the Potters managed to breach United’s defences but, each time, Byrne was there to save the day.

Abdallah was totally out of luck, in the 37th minute, when his shot was out of Byrne’s reach but struck the foot of a post. Stoke, it has to said, started to improve further in the second half but there was no help from Lady Luck for them in from of goal in the early minutes of the second.

Abdallah was given a great opportunity but fired wildly over and, barely a minute, later Julien N’Goy did precisely the same from virtually the same spot. Zak Dearnley very nearly added to United’s lead, just before the hour but, within two minutes, the Potters' Theo Brierley had put the Potters on level terms.

Reds coach Tommy Martin sent on Boonen for Buffonge in the 62nd minute and it proved to be a masterstroke for, within a quarter of an hour, the substitute had claimed what proved to be the winning goal.

United skipper Tyler Reid sent over the pass into penalty area for Belgian prospect Boonen to provide the finishing touch from close range.

Stoke did their best to try to salvage something from the game in the time that remained, but United weren’t about to be denied their third victory in four games and a winning start to the new phase of the competition.

United: Byrne; Reid, Scott, Dunne, Kenyon; Whelan, Kehinde; Gomes (Barlow 78), Gribbin, Buffonge (Boonen 62); Dearnley. Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Sang, Diedrick-Roberts.

Under-18s: Swansea 3 United 3

Manchester United Under-18s were held to a 3-3 draw by Swansea City in the second game of the club's Merit Group schedule.

Following a narrow success at Stoke City, the Reds were on course to take maximum points again but relinquished an early 2-0 lead and conceded a 90th-minute equaliser.

Two quickfire goals handed United the initiative as Tommy Martin's youngsters continued to show renewed confidence. DJ Buffonge provided the pass for Tosin Kehinde to fire in the 15th-minute opener and Zak Dearnley added a second within a minute by placing his shot into the corner of the net.

Confusion at the back allowed the Welsh side a route back into the game, however, with Jordan Garrick on target to reduce the arrears. Oliver Byrne maintained his recent run of fine form in goal by pulling off a couple of important stops as United held the advantage going into the break.

Garrick notched his second of the game to equalise with nine minutes left but there was still plenty of drama to come. Three minutes later, schoolboy substitutes Angel Gomes and Aidan Barlow combined with Barlow converting Gomes's cross to claim his maiden goal at this level.

Back came Swansea when Dan Jefferies provided the finishing touch to a goalmouth scramble to beat Byrne and make it 3-3. It could have been worse for the Reds as Garrick was inches away from a winner with the last kick of a pulsating game.

United : Byrne; Reid, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon; Scott, Kehinde; Whelan (Barlow 60), Gribbin, Buffonge (Gomes 60); Dearnley (Diedrick-Roberts 77). Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Tanner.
Scorers : Kehinde 15, Dearnley 16, Barlow 84

UNDER-18S : DERBY 3 UNITED 0

Barclays Under-18 Premier League, Merit Group | 19 March 2016 | Moor Farm | Scorers: Gordon 8, Walker 54, Babos 85

Derby County completed a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the Merit Group phase of the Under-18 Premier League.

The Rams made the perfect start when taking the lead after only eight minutes, capitalising on some lapse defending by United. Kellam Gordon was on hand to supply the finish past keeper George Dorrington.

In response, Callum Whelan mustered two shots on target but the hosts finished the first half strongly, with a few close calls towards Dorrington's goal, and pushed on again in the second period.

Lewis Walker doubled Derby's advantage nine minutes after the interval and the Reds were unable to finish off some great chances to force a route back into the game. Substitute Aidan Barlow and Zak Dearnley were both guilty of failing to provide the necessary finish while DJ Buffonge fired over the top following a dynamic run.

Alex Babos wrapped things up late on with a header past Dorrington to round off a disappointing day for the United youngsters.

United: Dorrington; Sang (Barlow 41), Warren, Dunne, Reid; Scott, Whelan; Kehinde, Buffonge, Boonen; Dearnley (Barrett 81). Subs not used: Byrne, Spratt.
