UNDER-18S OUT TO STRETCH LEAD AT SUMMIT

Manchester United can extend the lead at the top of the Under-18 Premier League North table on Saturday as Sunderland visit the Aon Training Complex.

The 12:30 BST kick-off is being shown exclusively live by MUTV as Kieran McKenna's side bid to take advantage of hosting the only fixture in the division this weekend after the clash was brought forward from 22 October.

The Reds have already played two games more than second-placed Manchester City but sit a point clear at the summit following the 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough last time out.

"It's obviously pleasing for the players," McKenna explained to MUTV. "We want them to develop a winning mentality and we want them, ideally, to win tournaments and trophies as youth-team players. But it's not something we massively look at as staff.

"We're primarily focused on making sure we are improving them all as individuals and pushing them all to be better. We are trying to develop that winning habit and, if it means we win a lot of games and do well in the league, it's a bonus and only a by-product of what we're trying to do on a daily basis.

"I think the Under-18s is the first time they have a league now so it's part of their development by learning how to deal with being lower in the table and being top as we are the moment. We've got a game when other sides aren't playing so it's a good chance to play on our home pitch again. Our last three games here have been excellent and we're looking to put in a good performance again."

In terms of the build-up to Saturday's fixture, there has been plenty for the youngsters to enjoy on a personal level at the training ground.

"It's obviously been an international week and is a bit mixed up," added McKenna. "Angel Gomes has been away with England and Tahith Chong is away at the moment [with the Netherlands]. In the week, there have been a lot of different learning experiences for the boys and that's what it's about, not just the game on the Saturday.

"Three boys were playing in an Under-23 game behind closed doors on Tuesday so that was a big step up for them and we had five or six boys involved together with the first team too. Again, it's a fantastic experience for them and it is probably a typical week in youth development as you don't have the boys all week or a set structure.

"We've got to react, respond and give them different challenges that extend them throughout the week and hope, at the weekend, they come together to put on a good performance and try to win the game."

Sunderland are currently bottom of the table but were 4-1 up at Everton last weekend before having to settle for their first point of the campaign from a 4-4 draw.

UNDER-18S: WOLVES 2 UNITED 5

Under-18 Premier League | Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground | Scorers: Watt 74, Giles 77; Boonen 3, 19, Buffonge 24, Burkart 29, Chong 32

Manchester United’s Under-18s crashed home five goals for the fourth time this season to stay top of the Academy Premier League, but they are only the bare facts of a terrific display that must have had manager Kieran McKenna and his backroom staff buzzing.

Traditionally, a visit to Wolves’ Academy guarantees a challenging contest, but on this occasion the Molineux youngsters, particularly in the first half, just couldn’t cope with the quality of United’s play.

The game had barely started when United raced into the lead, with Tahith Chong crossing from the right for Indy Boonen to tap home. It was a blistering opening from the young Reds, but it was merely a taste of what was to follow over the next 40 minutes.

Some of United’s play was sublime and the Wolves defence, from the earliest moments of the game, were struggling to contain the rampant visitors. Nineteen minutes into the game and United were celebrating again after Nishan Burkart had charged down the left before passing to Boonen, who was given the simple task of placing the ball into the net.

Less than five minutes later and Wolves goalkeeper Harry Beasley was again picking the ball out of the back of the net following DJ Buffonge’s close-range finish. Burkart raised the score to 4-0, in the 29th minute, and three minutes later Chong claimed the fifth goal after moving over to the left wing.

It had been a quite extraordinary half of football from United’s kids and they looked capable of at least doubling their output in the second half if they maintained that level of performance.

But, as so often happens in football, the first-half blitz wasn’t replicated, yet the Reds had done more than enough to ensure that the points were secure. It is fair to say that Wolves did improve after the break and goals from Elliott Watt and Ryan Giles gave the scoreline a more respectable appearance.

United continued to pile up the chances, with Burkart and Angel Gomes both striking the frame of Wolves’ goal, but try as they might they couldn’t get the ball past Beasley again.

But all in all, this was a thoroughly satisfactory afternoon for the young Reds, and a remarkable first half to cherish.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon (Spratt 46); Whelan, Buffonge; Chong (Bohui 61), Gomes, Boonen; Burkart (Diedrick-Roberts 61). Substitutes not used: Johnstone, Barlow.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 BLACKBURN 1

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: O’Connor 19, Warren 33, Gomes 38, Barlow 64; Hamilton o.g 83.

Manchester United leapfrogged Blackburn Rovers in the Under-18 Premier League table after a convincing win at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday morning.

Centre-backs Lee O'Connor and Tyrell Warren both scored their first goals at Academy level, before Angel Gomes added a third in a lively first half in which Rovers played their part.

Aidan Barlow got on the scoresheet in the second period and, despite conceding a late goal, Kieran McKenna's side ended Rovers seven-game unbeaten run and made it five matches without defeat themselves.

After a minute's silence ahead of Remembrance Sunday, Blackburn started brightly and, before the opening goal, Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui was the busier of the two goalkeepers, making a fine stop from Tre Pemberton's acrobatic volley for the visitors.

But in the 19th minute, Blackburn keeper Ben Ashcroft punched Indy Boonen's corner as far as Ethan Hamilton, who drove to the byline and fired across goal for O'Connor to tap home from close-range.

DJ Buffonge drove a powerful shot over soon after, before Gomes bamboozled his marker and fired a low shot that Ashcroft saved at his near post.

The young Reds, watched by first-team star Ashley Young, were on top by now and doubled the lead when Warren stayed forward after a corner to head home O'Connor's cross.

Gomes got in on the act five minutes later, slotting home after a delightful one-two with Buffonge. Just before the break, Moutha-Sebtaoui made another good stop low to his left to deny Jack Evans.

Gomes almost made it four early in the second period with a left-foot snapshot that bounced inches wide and Moutha-Sebtaoui was called into action to keep out Daniel Butterworth's shot.

McKenna made a triple substitution on the hour mark, the most significant of which was the introduction of Callum Gribbin for his first Under-18s appearance of the season after three months out injured.

His fellow sub Nishan Burkart couldn't keep his header down from Jake Kenyon's fizzed cross and Gribbin was denied by a last-ditch tackle, but Blackburn conceded a fourth when the third of United's subs, Barlow, prodded home a Callum Whelan corner from three yards out.

Whelan went close to adding a fifth with a swerving free-kick that clipped the side-netting, before Blackburn netted a late consolation when Hamilton could only divert a dipping corner into his own net.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui; Tanner, Warren, O’Connor, Kenyon; Whelan, Hamilton; Buffonge (Barlow 59), Gomes (Gribbin 59), Boonen, Chong (Burkart 59). Subs not used: Fojticek, Dunne.

UNITED LEARN FA YOUTH CUP OPPONENTS

Manchester United will play Southampton at home in the FA Youth Cup after the draw for the competition was made on Friday at Wembley Stadium.

The date, location and kick-off time for the match will be confirmed in due course, but Kieran McKenna will no doubt be pleased to have a home draw in his first Youth Cup game since joining the Reds.

United are the competition's most successful club with 10 triumphs in all, while Chelsea have run out Youth Cup winners in four of the last five seasons.

McKenna is looking forward to his maiden campaign with United in the competition and spoke to MUTV recently about its importance to the Reds' history and his experience of being a coach in it with former club Tottenham Hotspur.

"It’s obviously a fantastic tournament for this club, a tournament we’ve got a big history in, but it’s also a knockout tournament so it's very unpredictable," explained McKenna. "You can never guarantee success in it but it’s something that we’re all looking forward to and we’ll give it our best shot.

"It’s a tournament everyone wants to win and, within that, having a good run brings a whole host of exciting games and enables you to see how the players perform under pressure. With the experiences I’ve had, I can see the positives. The Youth Cup is something we’ll be looking forward to encountering this year."

U18S: NEWCASTLE 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 4

Manchester United’s high-flying Under-18s remained hot on the heels of neighbours Manchester City at the top of the Premier League Under-18 table, thanks to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on Tyneside.

City’s 6-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday meant that it was impossible that Kieran McKenna’s lads could take over at the summit, but they nevertheless maintained the pressure on the Blues with this victory keeping the Reds within a point of the current league leaders.

It was a terrific performance by the young Reds, who took command of the game in the early stages and were very rarely troubled on a beautiful late autumn afternoon in the north east. The only surprise was the length of time it took United on to the scoreboard after dominating the early possession.

Angel Gomes eventually set United on the road to victory with a beautifully placed shot in the 34th minute.

And within two minutes of the breakthrough United doubled the advantage when Callum Gribbin, back in action following time on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, swept the ball home from the penalty spot after Lee O’Connor had been felled in the area.

Newcastle, coached by former Everton defender Dave Watson, enjoyed a brief resurgence after the break, but despite carving out a couple of decent scoring chances it was United who scored the next goal when Joshua Bohui finished off a top quality and intricate attack.

The Magpies were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes to go when MacKenzie Heaney was directed to the dressing room after being shown two yellow cards.

Indy Boonen wrapped up a highly satisfactory afternoon’s work for United when he claimed the Reds' fourth goal, with two minutes of normal time left on the clock, after teasing the Newcastle defence.

United: Sebtaoui; O’Connor, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon; Gribbin, Hamilton (McIntosh-Buffonge), Whelan, Barlow (Boonen 63); Gomes; Burkart (Bohui 63). Subs not used: Alex Fojtíček, Luca Ercolani.

Tidak berbeda dengan tim senior, sama-sama meraih hasil imbang minggu ini..

UNDER-18S: LIVERPOOL 3 MANCHESTER UNITED 3

Under-18 Premier League | Liverpool Academy | Scorers: Gribbin 13, 38, 88 pen; Brewster 16, McAuley 19, Dhanda 54

Callum Gribbin scored a brilliant hat-trick as Manchester United extended their unbeaten run in the Under-18s Premier League North to seven games after an entertaining 3-3 draw against Liverpool on Saturday morning.

The young Reds took the lead in the 13th minute at the Liverpool Academy as Gribbin followed up after DJ Buffonge's effort was well saved by Dan Atherton.

Liverpool turned the game around with two quick-fire goals as Rhian Brewster fired home from 20 yards and Glen McAuley calmly slotted in, before Gribbin drew United level towards the end of a lively first period.

The home side retook the lead with a stunning 54th-minute strike from Yan Dhanda, but United keeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui frustrated them with two brilliant penalty saves from Dhanda and Brewster in each half – the second of which saw United defender Jake Kenyon sent off.

And the impressive Gribbin struck with a calmly-converted spot-kick of his own with two minutes remaining to complete his treble and secure a share of the spoils for United from an action-packed game, which leaves the sides second and third in the table respectively.

Kieran McKenna’s side, fresh from a confidence-boosting 4-0 win at Newcastle last week, made a bright start on a cold morning in Kirkby and took an early lead.

Marauding full-back George Tanner had already been denied by a brilliant save from Liverpool keeper Atherton, who kept out Buffonge’s effort, but Gribbin was on hand to slot home the follow-up into the bottom corner.

Despite looking a threat going forward, United soon found themselves on the back foot as Neil Critchley’s Liverpool team produced a quick-fire turnaround with two goals in three minutes.

Callum Whelan was caught on the ball by Liam Coyle, who freed Brewster to rifle an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner.

And Reds stopper Moutha-Sebtaoui was beaten again soon after as Dhanda slipped in McAuley, who coolly finished from seven yards.

Dhanda had the opportunity to give the visitors a two-goal cushion when Liverpool were awarded a spot-kick just after the half-hour mark.

McAuley appeared to be shoved over by Kenyon outside the box but the Reds forward, who scored twice in Liverpool’s win at United in August, couldn’t find a way past Moutha-Sebtaoui from 12 yards as the keeper pulled off a fine stop.

Although Liverpool had further opportunities too, United’s enterprising play deserved some reward and Gribbin, who only returned from three months out injured a fortnight ago, clipped in a brilliant finish off the post from Indy Boonen’s pass.

After an all-action first half, the second period was more conservative, with United enjoying sustained spells of possession, but Liverpool regained their lead with a thunderous effort as Dhanda made up for his penalty miss in some style.

Both sides had chances, which were few and far between after the break, as United substitute Tahith Chong was denied from close range by Atherton before Brewster steered Rafael Camacho’s cross wide of the post.

After conceding a second penalty of the game, United’s Kenyon saw red for bringing down Brewster, who was kept out by another superb stop from Moutha-Sebtaoui as Liverpool missed a golden chance to extend their advantage.

But Man-of-the-Match Gribbin had the final say from the spot, after Kris Owens was penalised for bringing down Angel Gomes, by dispatching past Atherton from 12 yards to snatch a well-earned point for United from an eventful encounter.

The young Reds return to action next Saturday against Derby County at The Cliff Training Ground (KO 12:00 GMT).

United: Moutah-Sebtaoui; Tanner, Kenyon, Warren, O’Connor; Whelan, Boonen, Buffonge (Hamilton 45’), Gomes; Burkart (Chong 52’), Gribbin. Subs not used: Dunne, Fojticek, Bohui.

Liverpool: Atherton; Shariff, Owens, Parker, Johnston; Coyle, Camacho, Masterson, McAuley; Brewster, Dhanda. Subs: Adekanye, Caan, Lewis, Hunter.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 DERBY 0

Under-18 Premier League | The Cliff Training Ground | Scorers: Gomes 9 (pen), Chong 29, Bohui 36, Buffonge 53

Manchester United’s Under-18s moved to the top of the Premier League North table following a comfortable win at The Cliff on Friday evening.

With leaders Manchester City not in action until Saturday the victory saw them leapfrog their neighbours into first place, and it was another impressive performance from the youngsters as the Reds stretched their unbeaten streak to nine games.

The Cliff, to the uninformed, is United’s former training ground alongside the River Irwell in Greater Manchester’s ‘second-city’, Salford. The facility gained legendary status over five decades as a breeding ground for some of the club’s greatest players, most notably the fabled Busby Babes and Sir Alex Ferguson’s famed ‘Class of 92’.

Ahead of the game the groundsmen had treated the pitch to a generous session of ‘TLC’ and it was looking in truly pristine condition as the players and backroom staff of the two teams arrived. It certainly provided an inspirational setting for Kieran McKenna’s free-scoring young Reds who wasted no time getting into their stride.

It was an impressive start as United swept the ball about with the supreme confidence that an eight-match unbeaten run can generate. Just nine minutes into the game and United were in front when Angel Gomes put the ball into the net after Joshua Bohui had been felled in the area. It was a lead that was certainly deserved and in keeping with the flow of play in the early minutes of the game.

A few minutes later and Gomes almost made it two when narrowly shooting wide after taking a pass from Jake Kenyon. Kenyon was in sparkling form down the left wing using his pace to put the Derby defence under a constant threat.

In the 29th minute United doubled the lead with Tahith Ching planting a precise shot past Derby keeper Matthew Yates after Kenyon had provided the cross.

Seven minutes later and Kenyon was up to his tricks again sending over an inch-perfect pass into the area for Bohui to head firmly past Yates.

United took the foot off the pedal a little after half-time, but that didn’t stop the Reds adding a fourth goal, in the 53rd minute, through DJ Buffonge.

United and neighbours City look to be on course for a head-to-head battle for the league title and that little dispute will take centre stage next Saturday morning at the Aon Training Complex when the Blues are the visitors.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui (Johnstone M. 57); Tanner, Warren, O’Connor, Kenyon (Ercolani 54); Chong, McIntosh-Buffonge, Whelan, Boonen (Barlow 74); Gomes, Bohui. Subs not used: Dunne, Burkart
