MANCHESTER UNITED 4 EVERTON 0

Manchester United moved joint-top of the Premier League table with a 4-0 thumping of Everton at Old Trafford on Wayne Rooney's first return to Old Trafford since leaving in the summer.

Antonio Valencia handed the Reds the perfect start but there were some nervous moments until Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a second goal, shortly after Rooney was withdrawn to a warm ovation. Romelu Lukaku netted against his former club as the floodgates opened and there was still time for Anthony Martial to convert a stoppage-time penalty.

Valencia hammered a sublime first-time shot past Jordan Pickford in only the fourth minute, when Nemanja Matic picked him out on the edge of the box with an astute pass from left to right.

The Reds continued to probe for openings and should have doubled the lead when Michael Keane's stray pass was picked up by Juan Mata, who released Lukaku. Unfortunately, with the goal at his mercy, the former Toffees striker fired the wrong side of the post.

Rooney shot wide from one decent attack by the visitors and they remained very much in the game, with David De Gea saving from Tom Davies's header when the youngster was offside in any case. After the break, Everton began to get on top with Rooney thwarted by De Gea after tackling Eric Bailly inside the box and the keeper also denied Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Mata almost extended United's advantage when crashing a free-kick off an upright after he was fouled on the edge of the box by Ashley Williams but any anxiety was eased when Mkhitaryan stroked home an unselfish pass by Lukaku.

Belgium international Lukaku got in on the act himself when steering in soon afterwards. His free-kick may have hit the wall but he remained alive to an opening and tucked past Pickford as Jesse Lingard flicked on a deflected Matic centre.

With time running out, United went for the kill and Martial showed quick feet inside the box, only for ex-Red Morgan Schneiderlin to slide in and handle the ball. The lively substitute took on the responsibility himself and added number four to ensure Jose Mourinho's men have matched neighbours City's record in the league this term.

David De Gea preserved another clean sheet, his 100th for the club, when making a brilliant stop to keep out Sandro Ramirez's long-range effort on another afternoon to remember at Old Trafford.

Manchester United 4-0 Everton PLAYER RATINGS: Nemanja Matic the lynchpin as £45m Gylfi Sigurdsson struggles to impose himself

* Manchester United beat Everton 4-0 on Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford
* Rooney missed a big chance to make it 1-1 before United romped home
* Here, Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler hands out his player ratings

Antonio Valencia's brilliant opener set Manchester United on their way to a routine win over Everton on Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford.

Late goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and an Anthony Martial penalty sealed the points. Rooney impressed, but he was guilty of missing several chances including a big one to level after the break.

Here Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler rates the performances in red and blue at Old Trafford.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)

DAVID DE GEA – 7

Produced a big save when it mattered to deny Rooney a goal on his return early in the second half.

ANTONIO VALENCIA – 7

Cracking strike from United's captain upstaged their old skipper. Valencia won't hit a better shot.

Antonio Valencia got United off to a flying start with his stunning strike early in the contest

ERIC BAILLY – 6.5

Made some excellent challenges but one missed tackle on Rooney almost cost United a goal.

PHIL JONES – 7

Did an excellent marking job on Rooney, giving his old team-mate very little opportunity to cause trouble.

ASHLEY YOUNG – 6.5

Didn't put a foot wrong in defence and got forward well to support United's attack.

MAROUANE FELLAINI – 6.5

Played in place of the injured Paul Pogba and produced a disciplined performance against his old club.

NEMANJA MATIC – 8

Another outstanding display from the Serb who has quickly become the heartbeat of this United team.

Nemanja Matic produced a dominant performance in the engine room for the home side

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN – 7

Nerveless finish for United's second goal and troubled Everton with his strong running.

JUAN MATA – 6.5

Some excellent link-up play from the little Spaniard who also hit the post with a clever free-kick.

MARCUS RASHFORD – 6

Plenty of enterprise from the youngster but it just didn't come off for him on this occasion.

ROMELU LUKAKU – 7.5

Recovered from an awful miss in the first half to set up second goal and score the third.

Romelu Lukaku recovered from an bad miss to set up second goal and score the third

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United 4-0 Everton

MOURINHO REACTS TO UNITED 4 EVERTON 0

Jose Mourinho was a happy man on Sunday following Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Everton in the Premier League, which was secured by goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial. This is what the manager said to MUTV and the media afterwards…

What did you think during the second half about a possible Everton comeback?
I always thought it would be 1-0 or 2-0, I ever thought about 1-1. The 2-0 came and then the third and fourth goal were just consequences of a team that was sad and another team that was happy. For me, the third and fourth goals were a little bit out of the context of the game.

Does Valencia always hit them like that in training?
Sometimes he does but it’s obviously not easy to score such an amazing goal. But sometimes he does.

After scoring one and setting up another, you must be pleased with Lukaku?
I would be pleased even without that work he does for the team, the way he opens spaces for us in the first half, I was more than pleased. One more goal, fantastic, one assist. But his overall work is more than that.

Why is the team scoring so many goals late on this season?
I think the Premier League is becoming very defensive, as I've told you before. I think many teams try to play with five at the back plus two or three in the middle. Sometimes four in the middle in some matches. And two teams try to match each other and play the same system and it's 0-0 or 1-0. Sometimes, when you have a little bit more space, you try in the last part of the game and they were losing 2-0 and they tried to come [at us] more and they gave us more spaces. I think it is down to that.

David De Gea kept his 100th United clean sheet and made some great saves today…
It is more difficult when you are sleeping. You don’t touch the ball for minutes and minutes and minutes and then have an important moment in the game. So it’s even more difficult and even more important.

Three wins at home, with 12 goals scored and none conceded. Are you happy with that form?
I’m happy. There is clearly a difference in relation to last season. We played better and we score more goals. Every match is a different match and the next one, against Burton, who come on the back of an important result against a good team like Fulham. It will be another difficult match for us.
