'I wish the rest of them were the same': Gary Neville 'proud' of Man United youngster Hannibal Mejbri for fouling Liverpool players in their defeat at Anfield... insisting he set an example for his older team-mates

* Manchester United suffered a 4-0 defeat away at Liverpool on Tuesday night
* Ralf Rangnick's men were outclassed by the Reds on a miserable night at Anfield
* But Gary Neville could at least draw one positive from his former club's display
* He was delighted with the work rate of teenager Hannibal Mejbri off the bench
* Mejbri was booked for giving away two fouls, but Neville was 'proud' of his effort

Gary Neville claimed he was 'proud' to see Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri show some fight by smashing into Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita during their 4-0 defeat away at Liverpool.

United were torn apart by the Reds on Tuesday night, falling two goals behind in the first 22 minutes at Anfield when Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah opened the scoring.

Sadio Mane then made it 3-0 in the 68th minute before Salah added his second and Liverpool's fourth late on, capping a miserable evening for Ralf Rangnick's men.

However, Neville was able to draw one positive from an otherwise disappointing outing for his old club, pointing to Mejbri as a source of pride on the night.

The 19-year-old, who came off the bench with six minutes remaining, flew into tackles and gave away fouls for challenges on Henderson and Keita.

He picked up a booking in the process, but after the game Neville heaped praise on Mejbri for at least making an effort.

'It takes a young kid to come on and show the rest of them how to sprint for the ball and put a challenge in,' he said on commentary for Sky Sports.

'I'm actually proud of him! Maybe he doesn't like the idea of Liverpool players passing it round him. I wish the rest of them were the same.'

Gary Neville claimed he was 'proud' of Hannibal Mejbri in Man Utd's defeat away at Liverpool

Neville then added: 'The kid showed something that he didn't like the idea of Liverpool taking the mickey out of his team-mates. At least he showed something.

'It wasn't great him kicking players but that's something Man United fans can take at least. There were some lads out there who are good lads, professional, but they're broken.

'[Bruno] Fernandes is a good player, there's some decent players out there. They've played at good levels. But they're broken, finished, done this season.'

United are now trailing 9-0 in their head-to-head record with Liverpool this season, having also been thrashed 5-0 by their bitter rivals at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign.

Yet for Neville, Tuesday's latest mauling was one of the lowest moments of his association with the club.

The ex-United defender said: 'I've been watching Man United for 42 years and this is as bad as it gets honestly.

'[I] watched them through the 80s. I've never seen a group have a lack of appetite to play during my time watching the club.'

Default Re: Hannibal Mejbri

Ralf Rangnick has DEMOTED Hannibal Mejbri from Man United's first team after being left 'UNIMPRESSED' with his reckless display - that had Gary Neville feeling 'proud' - in embarrassing Anfield defeat by Liverpool

* Hannibal Mejbri was brought on during Manchester United's defeat by Liverpool
* The youngster, in just 10 minutes, committed a host of card-worthy challenges
* Ralf Rangnick was left unimpressed by the cameo, believing it was 'reckless'
* As a reprimand, the interim manager dropped the playmaker back into the U23s

Ralf Rangnick was unimpressed with Hannibal Mejbri's explosive cameo in Manchester United's 4-0 defeat by Liverpool, according to reports, with the youngster even reprimanded and dropped back into the Under 23s.

Midfielder Mejbri, 19, was brought on for the final six minutes at Anfield in April with his side trailing heavily against their historic rivals, and promptly picked up a yellow card after making several heavy tackles.

He was perhaps fortunate to escape being sent off, although former United defender Gary Neville later claimed he was 'proud' of the academy starlet.

Interim boss Rangnick did not share the same view, however, with ESPN claiming that he was punished and sent back to train with the club's youth team.

Ralf Rangnick was 'unimpressed' by Hannibal Mejbri's reckless display against Liverpool. Starlet Mejbri was brought on late on at Anfield and was booked after several poor tackles

It is believed that the 63-year-old was frustrated by the 'reckless and erratic' performance from Hannibal, a full-fledged international for Tunisia.

Indeed, he has not featured in a matchday squad since.

Fellow academy starlets Alejandro Garnacho and Alvaro Fernandez were named on the bench for United's 3-0 victory over Brentford last time out.

Mejbri was also absent against Arsenal and Chelsea, matches in which the Red Devils lost 3-1 and drew 1-1 respectively to end their Champions League hopes.

Speaking after his former side's loss, a clearly angered Neville praised Mejbri.

'To be fair at least the kid's showing something,' he said on Sky Sports.

According to reports, Mejbri was punished by being dropped back into United's U23s. Gary Neville said he was 'proud' of the 19-year-old despite him being close to being sent off. Mejbri has been tipped to enjoy a bright future at Old Trafford despite his recent reprimand

'Honestly, it takes a young kid to come on and show the rest of them how to sprint to the ball and put a challenge in. I'm actually proud of him.

'Maybe he doesn't like the idea of Liverpool passing around him, I wish the others were the same.'

The player-turned-pundit later clarified his comments, however.

He added: 'I erred on to the slightly unprofessional side of commentary tonight when I said that the kid [Mejbri]… I was proud of him because he was going around trying to top people and trying to kick people.

'But he demonstrated something, he showed something.

'He didn't like the idea of Liverpool, at Anfield, passing it around him and the idea of Liverpool taking the mick out of him and his team-mates.

'At least he demonstrated something. I am not saying it is brilliant because he could have hurt the Liverpool players, but as a United fan you can respond to that.'

Mejbri has been tipped to enjoy a bright future at Old Trafford and will hope to impress new manager Erik ten Hag, who takes up the reins at the end of the season.

Manchester United 'agree to send youngster Hannibal Mejbri on a season-long loan to Birmingham' to get regular first-team football - with teenager keen to increase chances of making Tunisia's World Cup squad

* Manchester United are keen to send 19-year-old Hannibal Mejbri on a year loan
* Birmingham City are reported to be leading the race to get Mejbri for the season
* He wants regular playing time to secure a place in Tunisia's World Cup squad

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to loan out Hannibal Mejbri to a Championship club on a season-long deal, with Birmingham City leading the race to get the Tunisian teen.

Mejbri featured for eight minutes of United's final Premier League game of last season in May, and was a substitute for three pre-season friendlies for the Red Devils over the summer.

But United and current manager Erik ten Hag are keen for 19-year-old Mejbri to get a real experience of senior football, and the young midfielder believes regular playing time will benefit his World Cup dreams, having earned 16 national caps since the start of last year.

So the Premier League's bottom side have agreed to loan Mejbri to a second-tier side, with Birmingham City leading the race to get his services for the season, according to Manchester Evening News.

Last season, United academy duo Tahith Chong and Teden Mengi were at St. Andrew's to boost their development, making 20 and nine appearances for the Blues respectively.

Hannibal Mejbri looks set to be joining a Championship side on loan from Manchester United. Mejbri, featured in three pre-season friendlies for the Red Devils this summer

Birmingham appear to be ahead of other possible suitors for Mejbri. Millwall, Middlesbrough, Burnley, and West Brom were all rumoured to be interested - although there might be some last-minute offers on the table, with nothing signed off yet.

Any successful suitor club would have to guarantee regular playing time for the Tunisian. Mejbri's opportunities at Old Trafford are limited due to the intense competition for an attacking midfielder role under ten Hag.

John Eustace's Birmingham side currently sit 12th in the Championship with one win, one draw, and one defeat so far. On Tuesday night, they face Watford.

Tunisia are in Group D of the World Cup in Qatar, where they will face Australia, Denmark, and reigning trophy holders France.

Man United prepare to send 19-year-old midfielder Hannibal Mejbri to Birmingham City on loan... as the low-scoring Championship club seeks a playmaker to create for strikers Troy Deeney and Scott Hogan

* Manchester United's Hannibal Mejbri is set to join Birmingham City on loan
* The Tunisian midfielder only managed two appearances for United last season
* He would be the fifth Red Devils player to exit Old Trafford on loan this summer

Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri is expected to join Birmingham City on loan.

The Red Devils academy star featured in United's defeats to Liverpool and Crystal Palace last season and has yet to carve his way into Erik ten Hag's first-team plans.

Birmingham, who have only scored three goals in the Championship after six matches, have held talks with Man United in an effort to lure the 19-year-old to the west Midlands on loan.

The St. Andrew's chiefs are keen to bolster John Eustace's squad with attacking midfielders in the hope of creating more chances for first-team strikers Troy Deeney and Scott Hogan.

Mejbri would be the fifth Manchester United player to exit Old Trafford on loan this summer.

Manchester United academy graduate Hannibal Mejbri is set to join Birmingham City on loan. The 19-year-old midfielder has already made 16 senior international appearances for Tunisia

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson made his loan switch to Nottingham Forest last month and was followed by out-of-favour defenders Alex Telles and Eric Bailly, who left on short-term deals to Sevilla and Marseille respectively.

Spanish youngster Alvaro Fernandez also completed his loan move to Preston in July.

Providing a creative spark for Man United's youth teams, Mejbri has notched 17 assists in 40 appearances for the under 21s, scoring six goals during that period.

The playmaker has also racked up 16 senior appearances for Tunisia since making his international debut in June 2021.

Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri seals a loan move to Birmingham City after failing to break into Erik ten Hag's plans at Old Trafford

* Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri joins Birmingham City on loan
* The 19-year-old has played twice in the Premier League for the Red Devils
* Hannibal had trained with the first-team squad during pre-season tour
* Midfielder could make his debut for Blues on Tuesday against Norwich City

Promising Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has moved to Birmingham City on loan.

The 19-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2022/23 season at St Andrews having made two Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.

Hannibal had spent pre-season among the Manchester United first-team squad and featured twice during their tour in Thailand and Australia before playing in the friendly game against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford.

He was unveiled to Birmingham fans via a parody video clip from the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs, in which Hannibal has been super-imposed over Anthony Hopkin's famous character Hannibal Lecter.

The scene used is the one where Lector meets Jodie Foster's character FBI agent Clarice Starling.

Hannibal then says the line 'good evening' said by Hopkins in the film.

The midfielder admitted it will be an 'honour' for him to play for Birmingham after sealing his loan move. He told BluesTV: 'It is an honour to come and play for this club.

'I have heard a lot of good things from my friends who have played here before, so I am ready to come and play for this club.'

Midfielder could make his debut for Blues on Tuesday against Norwich City

Hannibal will link up with John Eustace's side and could be in line to make his debut as soon as Tuesday night as the Blues take on Norwich City in the Championship, subject to confirmation of registration by the FA and EFL.

The St. Andrew's chiefs are hoping that the addition of Hannibal will be able to boost their attacking threat and help create more chances for strikers Troy Deeney and Scott Hogan.

The Red Devils youth star made his Premier League appearances during the club's defeats to Liverpool and Crystal Palace last season, but has not managed to force his way into manager Erik ten Hag's first-team plans yet.

LOAN WATCH: HANNIBAL IMPRESSES

Hannibal continues to shine in a loan spell at Birmingham City, as he picked up another assist for Blues in a 2-1 win against Stoke City.

The Tunisia international started in the midfield for the Midlanders on Saturday afternoon and curled in a perfect corner to find Harlee Dean to double the advantage and, ultimately, earn the win.

Birmingham took the lead early on, through Scott Hogan pouncing on a Phil Jagielka mistake, before Dean's goal in the second half provided some breathing space. Stoke did grab a consolation goal from a Lewis Baker penalty, but it was not enough to topple Hannibal's Birmingham side.

Two other Red loanees were in action in the Championship on Saturday, but were not victorious. Amad started for Sunderland in their 1-0 loss to Cardiff City. The Ivorian had two good chances denied by Perry Ng and Cedric Kipre. Cardiff scored the only goal of the game, when Mark Harris latched on to an attempted shot by Mahlon Romeo.

Meanwhile, Ethan Laird started in Queens Park Rangers' 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion, as the promotion-chasers dropped to fifth in the league. The Londoners also lost by a narrow margin, as Kyle Bartley got on the end of a great free-kick from John Swift and guided his header home from close range.

In the Premier League, Dean Henderson started for Nottingham Forest in a dramatic 2-2 draw, when Brentford's Mathias Jorgensen scored in the 96th minute to take a point back to the City Ground.

In Europe, goalkeeper Matej Kovar kept an impressive clean sheet for Sparta Prague, beating Viktoria Plzen 1-0 in the Czech top-flight, while Alex Telles was involved in a stormy local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis. The full-back came on as a substitute for the away team, and picked up a booking, as three players were sent off in the 1-1 draw.

Ethan Galbraith started for Salford City on Saturday in the FA Cup. The Northern Ireland international played the full 90 minutes in the Ammies' first-ever clash against Peterborough in a 0-0 away draw. Before the replay, Salford will play on Tuesday, travelling to Rochdale, in League Two.

Charlie Wellens did not feature on Oldham Athletic's 3-0 cup exit at Wrexham.
