U21s: Manchester City 1 Manchester United 0

Manchester United’s hopes of completing a 10-day double over the club's fiercest rivals were dashed at a damp and gloomy Etihad Stadium where Ashley Brown-Smith scored the only goal for Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

A liberal dose of drizzle provided perfect Mancunian conditions for the Under-21 derby clash with 3,100 fans turning out to support what were once referred to as the reserve teams of Manchester’s two biggest clubs.
There was very little to choose between the sides in the early stages and there was definitely a ‘derby’ feel about the proceedings with the noisy followers of both clubs going through their familiar repertoires of chants and songs.

United started the game defending the end of the Etihad which was extended in the summer to add about 6,000 seats to the stadium’s capacity. But it was the Reds who had the first real chance in the opposite goalmouth, when James Weir’s shot on target was cleared off the line by City’s Angelino in the sixth minute.
Shortly after Weir had gone close for United, it was City’s turn to threaten when Rodney Kongolo’s shot looked destined to find the net before Joel Pereira dived to pull off a spectacular save. However, the Blues were a goal to the good after 17 minutes when Ashley Smith-Brown’s fierce low drive found the back of Pereira’s net.

Manchester’s ‘rainy-city’ reputation was holding firm with a steady stream of precipitation falling from the not so ‘sky-blue’ heavens throughout the game. Undeterred, the Reds' Marcus Rashford went close to finding the equaliser at the end of a promising move, but City’s resolute defence managed to clear the danger.

United certainly enjoyed a better second half and with a touch of luck could have salvaged at least a share of the rewards. A couple of attacks midway through the period were particularly promising but neither concluded in the desired way with Sadiq El Fitouri and Joe Rothwell both firing wide.

With the score still at 1-0 to the Blues, Reds striker Will Keane was replaced by Scott McTominay in the 67th minute, which could mean the Stockport-born striker has a role to play in the first team's Emirates FA Cup tie at Shrewsbury Town on Monday night.

One further change brought Demetri Mitchell on for Rothwell but there would be no alteration to the scoreline as Warren Joyce's league-leading side lost for only the third time in 12 matches.

United : Pereira J., El Fitouri, Williams, Fosu-Mensah, Riley; Weir, Willock, Redmond, Rashford; Rothwell (Mitchell 75); Keane (McTominay 67).
Subs not used: Dorrington (GK), Rathbone, Doughty.

Under-21s: Middlesbrough 1 United 2

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 29 February 2016 | Victoria Park | Scorers: Cooke 57 | A.Pereira 71 pen, McGinley og 82

Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 against Middlesbrough and regain top spot in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.

Callum Cooke's opener was overturned by Andreas Pereira's penalty, when Johnny Burn was sent off for fouling James Weir, and an own goal by Nathan McGinley which gave the Reds the points. With Sunderland suffering a shock 1-0 home defeat to Leicester City, Warren Joyce's side have returned to the summit.

In the third minute, United should have been a goal to the good as Joe Rothwell was clearly onside when converting a Weir pass but an errant flag by the assistant referee denied the midfielder a well-worked strike.

Boro had a half-hearted penalty appeal rejected before Rothwell fired a volley unluckily off target following another inviting ball by skipper Weir. Although Joel Pereira kept out an awkward Arnel Jakupovic effort, the Reds continued to carry the greater threat with Joe Fryer saving Devonte Redmond's glancing header from an Adnan Januzaj corner and also Andreas Pereira's whipped shot, following some excellent work by Januzaj, who made a clean tackle and then released his close friend.

After losing Donald Love to injury, Joe Riley was withdrawn as planned at the interval and the hosts started the second half strongly, from the moment Lewis Maloney tried to catch Joel Pereira out from the restart. Januzaj hit the side-netting from an Andreas Pereira pass but Boro began to dominate.

Substitute Tyrell Warren had to make a saving tackle when Tom McAloon intercepted a Ro-Shaun Williams backpass and McAloon did superbly to trick himself into a shooting position, only for Joel Pereira to block with his legs.

The Teessiders made the most of their best spell as Callum Johnson's run on the right led to a cross that deflected off Joel Pereira with Cooke taking full advantage to crash home the opening goal. Joel Pereira dropped a Jordan Jones corner but escaped punishment while the same player was brought down when racing through by Sadiq El Fitouri, with the substitute earning a yellow card.

Januzaj was replaced by Scott McTominay after an hour and United drew level when Regan Poole's incisive through ball released Weir and he was fouled by Burn. The defender was shown a red card and Andreas Pereira slammed the spot-kick down the middle of the goal for his fourth goal in six Under-21 outings.

The 10 men were undone with eight minutes left when Rothwell's run preceded a prod through to Weir and the captain's cross bounced off Fryer and rolled over the line off the unfortunate McGinley. Weir was unable to convert a Rothwell centre late on but Joyce's side saw time out professionally to earn a win that did not appear likely with an hour gone.

United: J.Pereira; Love (El Fitouri 28), Williams, McNair, Riley (Warren 46); Poole, Redmond; Rothwell, A.Pereira, Weir; Januzaj (McTominay 60). Subs not used: Henderson, Mitchell.

RESERVES : MANCHESTER UNITED 4 OLDHAM 0

Manchester United cruised into the Manchester Senior Cup semi-finals with a 4-0 victory over Oldham Athletic at the Aon Training Complex.

Andreas Pereira handed the Reserves the lead and Adnan Januzaj struck twice more before half-time. Regan Poole, with his first goal for the club, wrapped things up in the 77th minute.

Donald Love, playing in midfield, almost opened the scoring when good work by Joe Rothwell and Januzaj created an opening but David Cornell pulled off a fine one-handed save. However, two minutes later, Cornell made a misplaced clearance that was ruthlessly punished by Pereira, who found the net with a first-time effort from distance.

Four minutes later, Januzaj showed great skill to drag the ball back and unleashed a ferocious drive that flew past Cornell to ram home the advantage. The over-worked Cornell made three saves in quick succession, most notably to deny Demi Mitchell after he initially parried a Januzaj free-kick. More fine work by Rothwell and Januzaj led to Andreas Pereira firing over the bar and Cornell made an unusual save with his chest to beat out another Januzaj piledriver.

Januzaj did get his second moments before the break when converting with ease after being teed up by the industrious Love as another slick move carved opened the visitors' defence. Oldham rallied in the second period but were fortunate when centre-back Poole was off target from a Januzaj corner.

Rhys Murphy lashed an effort over the bar for the Latics and Joel Pereira gifted the ball to Joe Mills but redeemed himself by pulling off a smart block. Andreas Pereira kept Cornell on his toes with a low drive and the fourth goal arrived when Paddy McNair challenged for Januzaj's corner. The ball dropped to Poole, who produced an accurate shot with the assistant referee ruling it had crossed the line before being hacked away, which certainly appeared to be the case from first viewing.

Danny Byrnes forced another save out of Joel Pereira but United ran out comfortable victors to set up a last-four tie with Bury.

United : J. Pereira; El Fitouri, McNair, Poole, Riley; Love, McTominay (Reid 71); A. Pereira, Rothwell (Kehinde 54), Mitchell (Warren 56); Januzaj.
Subs: Henderson, Scott.

U21S: LIVERPOOL 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 11 March 2016 | Prenton Park | Scorers: Sinclair; Weir

Manchester United’s Under-21 side needed just a draw to move above Sunderland at the summit of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League and succeeded in that mission after coming from behind against Liverpool.

Jerome Sinclair gave Liverpool the lead shortly after half-time, but James Weir grabbed the leveller with the game entering its final stages.

Both skipper Weir and defender Joe Riley were back on Merseyside for the second successive night after having spent the previous evening on the substitutes’ bench at Anfield. Neither was called into the UEFA Europa League action, but they were both in the starting line-up against Liverpool’s Under-21 side.

Also of note in the team news was a welcome return for Ecuador international Antonio Valencia in his first game since being injured on first-team duty in October. The ‘home’ club, meanwhile, included Martin Skrtel, Steven Caulker and Jordan Ibe in their starting eleven.

This fixture was only recently re-arranged to be staged at Tranmere Rovers’ ground on Friday night instead of going ahead at Anfield two days later, but the change of venue didn’t stop a decent crowd from making their way to this little corner of Birkenhead. Liverpool lined up in their traditional all-red outfit while United were wearing white shirts and black shorts.

United started the match attacking the towering Prenton Park Kop stand and twice within the opening fifteen minutes had near misses strike the frame of Liverpool’s goal.

First it was a Liverpool defender who headed the ball onto his own crossbar as he attempted to clear, and moments later Adnan Januzaj rattled the post with a stinging shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The hosts enjoyed a good little spell shortly after the half-hour mark had been reached with shots from Sheyi Ojo and Ryan Kent raising the hopes of the Liverpool supporters in the crowd.

There were no goals in the first half, which was just about a fair reflection of the game at that point, but that all changed in the fifth minute of the second half when Jerome Sinclair ran on to Kent’s pass before rifling his shot past Joel Pereira.

Moments later and Paddy McNair, who’d had his name taken on the stroke of half-time for a foul, almost put United on terms with an audacious shot from inside his own half that almost caught Liverpool goalkeeper Daniel Ward off his line.

Januzaj, playing as United’s main striker, was doing his level best to try and engineer an opening but he wasn’t having the best of fortune in front of goal. But United eventually drew level, seventeen minutes from time, when a fine three-man move was finished by Weir, who was presented with the simple task of placing the ball into the net from a couple of yards out. The goal was greeted by a combination of cheers and boos which provided an indication of the crowd’s loyalties.

Two minutes later and Weir almost found the net again but his well-struck drive was dealt with efficiently by Ward.

Warren Joyce's men ended the evening as league leaders but Sunderland will return to the top of the table should they avoid defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Campus tomorrow.

United: J. Pereira, Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 46), McNair, Williams, Riley; El Fitouri, Love, McTominay, Weir; A. Pereira (Poole 90), Januzaj (Redmond 89). Subs not used: Henderson (Gk), Rothwell.
