Under-21s face Chelsea at Old Trafford

Manchester United face a key fixture in the battle for the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy as Chelsea head to Old Trafford for Monday's match (19:45 BST kick-off, live on MUTV).

Warren Joyce's side trail leaders Sunderland by five points but have four games in hand on the Black Cats, who could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Southampton on Sunday.

Chelsea meanwhile lie in fifth spot in the table but are unbeaten since November, with the away game between the clubs in Aldershot postponed on 20 March.

"It’s been frustrating to say the least that the game was called off," said Joyce. "I don’t know when it’s going to be played and it’s left us in a very difficult situation.

"If you look at Chelsea, they have teams for the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-21s as well as a great number of players out on loan. So they’re not exactly short on players.

"You just want our players to play at Old Trafford and tell them to test themselves there. That’s what a lot of them have dreamed about since they were about eight years of age, sat on the terraces watching the first team play. They’ve been dreaming about playing there.

"It’s important we’ve had some really good support from the fans in those games as well, with decent crowds, as it doesn’t half help the boys and develop them for first-team situations. If the fans come along and families bring their children, it’s good for us because we can say people might be seeing you for the first time – let them leave having the idea you can be a Manchester United player.

"It’s another little challenge to put to the players and I’m hopeful we can get reasonable crowds for the two games against Chelsea and Middlesbrough."

Louis van Gaal confirmed on Friday that Phil Jones is fit to start for Under-21s in order to build up his fitness. Sean Goss has been ruled out for the season but fellow midfielder Matty Willock is making progress with his recovery from injury.

Manchester United U21 1-1 Chelsea U21: Kasey Palmer's stunning first-half free-kick cancelled out by James Weir as Ashley Young and Phil Jones make comebacks

* Kasey Palmer gave Chelsea U21s the lead on 17 minutes with a free-kick
* Manchester United U21 captain James Weir equalised in the second half
* Wayne Rooney didn't play as his knee injury comeback was prolonged
* Ashley Young and Phil Jones did though as they continue their comebacks
* Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was present in the stands

They will go down as valuable minutes if nothing else for Phil Jones and Ashley Young as Manchester United Under 21s drew 1-1 against an exuberant, albeit inexperienced, Chelsea.

Neither have been available to Louis van Gaal since January with ankle and groin problems respectively. Neither had their most scintillating evening either, but the watching manager - along with Ryan Giggs and Sir Bobby Charlton - can only be encouraged as more of the walking wounded return.

Van Gaal rightly points to his injury list for at least one contributing factor to their stuttering form this year and could finally be closing in on something resembling a true first team squad by May.

Manchester United Under 21 captain James Weir (left) celebrates after equalising against Chelsea U21s

No Wayne Rooney, this fixture deemed too soon for the United captain who looks set to step up his recovery from knee ligament damage against Middlesbrough here next Monday.

Jones admittedly struggled at centre half, his partner RoShaun Williams looking more assured, but he is not even close to full fitness. That he lasted 76 minutes before heading straight down the tunnel will be regarded as a triumph of sorts.

Van Gaal wants to nurse him back, although it appeared the 24-year-old played on longer than he might have. Luckily there was no recurrence of the defender breaking down during an Under 21 fixture, as against Norwich in February.

Young though looked sprightly up front, running freely with no sign of pain during his full 90 minutes. He is closer than Jones in his pledge for fitness, named as a substitute for Sunday’s slender win over Everton, and Monday night did nothing to suggest he would not be in the squad against Tottenham this weekend.

Warren Joyce opted for a raft of youngsters who had earned first-team recognition, Paddy McNair, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Joe Riley, Guillermo Varela and Donald Love all starting in front of 9,257 at Old Trafford.

MATCH FACTS

Manchester United U21s: Johnstone, Riley, Williams, Jones (Redmond 76), Borthwick-Jackson, McNair, Love, Varela, A.Pereira (Rothwell 88), Weir, Young

Subs not used: J.Pereira, El Fitouri, McTominay

Goal: Weir 61

Booked: McNair, Riley, Love

Chelsea U21s: Beeney, Dabo (c), Tomori, Clarke-Salter, Aina, Colkett, Ali, Mitchell, Quintero (Colley 66), Palmer (Feruz 72), Abraham

Subs not used: Baxter, Sammut

Goal: Palmer 17

Booked: Clarke-Salter

Referee: Peter Gibbons

Attendance: 9,257

Jones (left) tries to close a Chelsea attack during his 76-minute outing at centre back for United U21s

Young (left) looked sprightly up front for the hosts as he continued his recovery from a long-term groin injury

Chelsea, however, bossed the opening 45 minutes and might have gone into half-time more than one ahead. Kasey Palmer was at the heart of most positive things from an away point of view, buzzing between the lines and causing McNair - sitting in midfield for United - all manner of problems. Tammy Abraham represented a handful too.

It was Palmer who gave Adi Viveash’s side a 17th-minute lead, bending a wonderful free-kick across Sam Johnstone after McNair was adjudged to have fouled Josimar Quintero on the edge. It had appeared clumsy but United were upset at the award, suggesting the midfielder had bought it.

Regardless, Chelsea were the more proactive, Palmer nutmegging Jones before seeing a shot comfortably saved, while Reece Mitchell fired a presentable half-volley over the bar.

Ola Aina will also have felt he should have added another before the break, heading over when unmarked from a corner. The left back then almost redeemed himself when pouncing on a lapse Jones header to clip Johnstone’s bar from 30 yards.

United - operating with Young as a lone striker - were limited going forward and stifled by their pressing visitors.

Jake Clarke-Salter smashed over as Chelsea sought to extend their lead but they were hit just after the hour mark thanks to an industrious run by captain James Weir squeezing beyond his marker and seeing a deflected effort trickle past Mitchell Beeney. Weir, a mature midfielder, is always impressive for the Under 21s.

Donald Love had earlier gone close and United were finally in the game. Weir was thwarted on superbly heading towards goal from a whipped Young corner as the hosts’ intensity grew.

Jones wore increasingly tired as the second half progressed, caught square on occasion, but Van Gaal - who remained in the directors’ box until full-time - will just be pleased to see him back out at Old Trafford. Young, meanwhile, should be at White Hart Lane come Sunday evening - although he missed a glorious late chance to pinch a winner, heading straight at Beeney from six yards.

Under-21s prepare for final home outing

Manchester United's final home match of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League season takes place on Monday night when Middlesbrough travel to Old Trafford.

Free entry for all fans will hopefully see another bumper attendance as Warren Joyce's youngsters look for three points that would go a long way to setting up a second successive title.

Following the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, when Ashley Young and Phil Jones enjoyed some game time, and Wayne Rooney is likely to step up his comeback against the Teessiders' second string. First-team boss Louis van Gaal has suggested the striker could get an hour of football under his belt ahead of Wednesday's Emirates FA Cup quarter-final replay at West Ham United.

Under-21 leaders Sunderland face a trip to Tottenham Hotspur in their final outing of the campaign on Monday, looking to post a target of 46 points, seven more than the Reds' current tally. Following the clash with Boro, there are three away matches still to be played - at Tottenham, Southampton and Chelsea.

"It’s good we’ve got a run-in," Joyce told Inside United. "Whatever happens from now until the end of the year, it’s been a fantastic season with the amount of players we’ve got through to have a little taste of the first team.

"You’ve got to be competing for trophies if you’re playing here and, at the minute, we’re still in with a shout of the league and we’re in two County Cup semi-finals. They are always the demands and we want to be in the mix all the time to win things."

Wayne Rooney makes his return from injury alongside Phil Jones for Manchester United U21s as Paddy McNair scores the winner

* Wayne Rooney played 61 minutes for Manchester United's Under 21 side
* England's captain is looking to step up his fitness before end of season
* Phil Jones also featured as he looks to return to the first team set-up
* Paddy McNair scored the only goal as United defeated Boro at Old Trafford

Wayne Rooney returned to the Manchester United fold on Monday night in a display suggesting he looks fit enough to at least claim a spot on the bench at West Ham.

A grinning Louis van Gaal and assistant Ryan Giggs were present to see their captain get through 61 minutes for the Under 21s against Middlesbrough ahead of Wednesday’s FA Cup quarter-final replay at Upton Park.

Paddy McNair netted the only goal moments after Rooney was replaced, but his senior was fairly sharp and will offer his manager another option as the top-four scramble becomes ever more desperate.

Wayne Rooney made his long-awaited return from injury for the Manchester United Under 21 side

Louis van Gaal was an interested spectator at Old Trafford and will hope to have Rooney back soon

Rooney’s absence has certainly been felt since he suffered a knee injury during defeat by Sunderland mid-February, missing 12 games which were symptomatic of Van Gaal’s season thus far; the occasional pleasing results - Arsenal at home, Manchester City away - acting as anomalies rather than the norm. They were 58 days in keeping with this turgid campaign.

Van Gaal knows all too well the importance of Rooney to his floundering side, perhaps a reason why he implored the captain to play on at the Stadium of Light, a decision which may have exacerbated the problem.

The 30-year-old does have his detractors, who became louder and grew in numbers earlier this season, but - like it or - United need him right now, if only for numbers.

They have also scored a meagre five goals in their last eight fixtures from the beginning of March, lacking bite and recording just one shot on target in the limp capitulation at Tottenham on Sunday. Even Marcus Rashford was not immune from Van Gaal criticism there.

Rooney, who netted seven in the nine games prior to that injury in the north-east, will want to hit the ground running from here as the European Championship fast approaches. Roy Hodgson is intent on standing by him despite the rise of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, while Van Gaal said on Friday that he remains England’s No 1 striker.

Quote:
MATCH FACTS

Manchester United XI: Johnstone, Riley, Williams, Jones, Borthwick-Jackson, McNair, Love, Redmond, Rothwell (A. Pereira - 40), Weir (El Fitouri - 46), Rooney (Tuanzebe - 61)

Subs not used: J. Pereira, Poole

Goals: McNair 67

Middlesbrough XI: Fryer, Johnson, Burn, Fry, McGinley, Tinkler, Jones (Kitching, - 72), Wheatley, Jakupovic, McAloon (Morris - 77), Cooke

Subs not used: Pears, Maloney, Elsdon

Rooney lasted 61 minutes before being substituted and Van Gaal would have been pleased

Phil Jones also started in the heart of the defence as he continues his comeback from a serious injury

He looked lively at Old Trafford, knitted possession well when dropping deep and provided subtle moments to remind, even with his legs not yet up to full speed, the brain is - evidenced when James Weir was intelligently flicked clear, only for the youngster’s shot to be diverted wide.

There were less than expected, 6,132 - fewer here than last Monday against Chelsea Under 21s for Phil Jones’ comeback - but they saw Rooney spread play nicely and run the channels.

They also watched on in horror as Joe Rothwell was forced into departing after Boro skipper Jonny Burn saw fit to bulldoze through the midfielder’s shin.

Paddy McNair scored the only goal of the game as United's U21 side squeezed past Middlesbrough

A genuine leg-breaker, Rothwell was exceptionally fortunate to just hobble down the tunnel, while referee Anthony Backhouse motioned Burn had played the ball. He had not.

Andreas Pereira, curiously only a substitute, inventively thumped the crossbar from the right edge of the box.

Rooney, meanwhile, looked keen for a goal, a dipping 30-yard half-volley comfortably saved before sending a free-kick and another long-range effort flying over the top. Not everything clicked, Rooney was visibly frustrated at times, but the stretching of the legs was worth it.

Quote:
WAYNE ROONEY FOCUS

Rooney made his first appearance since February 13 on Monday night when he turned out for Manchester United's Under-21s at Old Trafford in front of Louis van Gaal.

The 30-year-old England captain lasted 61 minutes in a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough ahead of United's FA Cup quarter-final replay at West Ham in two days' time.

Here, Sportmail looks at how the striker fared on his comeback.

FITNESS

Rooney was his usual lively self, leading the line and popping up in deeper midfielder positions before spreading the play.

At one point he won the ball back on halfway and burst forward to arrive in the area as a delivery arrived from the left. Prior to his substitution for Axel Tuanzebe in the 61st minute there was no sign of Rooney struggling with his energy levels either.

SHOOTING

The England international had three attempts on goal in total and only one found the target as he struggled to get his eye in during his first outing in two months.

An early 30-yard half volley into the ground was easy for Boro goalkeeper Joe Fryer to deal with and the stopper was untroubled by another attempt that flew into the stand behind his goal prior to the break. In the second half, Rooney took a free-kick 25 yards out, but this one failed to dip below the crossbar in front of the Stretford End.

PASSING

Joe Rothwell, later taken off because of injury, bailed Rooney out at first with a loose first pass that was almost intercepted, but United's No 10 soon found his rhythm. Most of his customary raking balls found their intended target and a smart one-two with Jamie Weir in the area nearly produced the opening goal, only for Fryer to keep the shot out at his near post.

IMPACT

The main purpose of Rooney's involvement was surely to give him a run-out prior to United's crucial replay at Upton Park later this week and in that respect it was a useful exercise. It was only after Rooney had gone off that the hosts scored, though, with Paddy McNair bursting into the box unmarked and finishing off just six minutes after the evening's star turn had come off.
