Harry Maguire calls for unity at Manchester United amid discontent at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decisions after Liverpool thrashing... as he reveals 'big discussions' have been held before their trip to Tottenham

* Manchester United are still reeling from their 5-0 loss to Liverpool last week
* Captain Harry Maguire has called for unity as United play Tottenham on Saturday
* Some United players have questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactical decisions
* Maguire admits that 'big discussions' have been held by the Red Devils this week

Harry Maguire says Manchester United must find a way to regroup following the inquest into their 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool.

The United captain was one of several players to come under fierce criticism for his performance at Old Trafford last Sunday which has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job as manager.

United players held a meeting at Carrington on Tuesday and, in a frank exchange with coaching staff, discussed what they believe is going wrong and how they can solve their problems.

Midfielder Paul Pogba apologised to colleagues after his sending off. The France international, who is expected to leave at the end of his contract next summer, felt all the more repentant as he had been asked at half time not to do anything rash only to receive a red card 15 minutes later.

Pogba will miss Saturday's trip to Tottenham as he starts a three match ban.

'It's a tough one to move on from but we need to move on,' said Maguire.

'It's been a tough week obviously, you can't just brush these things aside, especially when you lose to your rivals. To lose in the manner that we did was so disappointing.

'We've obviously had big discussions, we've analysed the game and the goals and looked at how we can do better and improve.'

The nature of United's defeat and recent performances generally has left their maligned coaching staff mulling over tactical changes and how their messages can get through more clearly.

The mood has been understandably sombre around Carrington. Sir Alex Ferguson, former captain Bryan Robson plus the likes of David Gill and Martin Edwards were all at the club training ground this week as they were measured for new club suits by designer Paul Smith.

All have offered support for Solskjaer and believe a change of manager would cause too much upheaval at this stage.

They believe a tougher approach from Solskjaer and tweaks in tactical approach could prove more effective in the short-term as the club's board continues to take stock of the situation and what candidates could make a telling impact.

United's players have questioned some coaching directions but Maguire and experienced figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo have been pressing home the need for unity if they are to recover swiftly.

'We know as a group of players we need to make sure we're together and we're positive,' the 28-year-old Maguire told ManUtd.com.

'There are lots of games to play in the Premier League, we're in a strong position in the group in the Champions League and we're still early on in the season. And it's a season in which we know we can still achieve things.

'That's the most important thing now, we need to come together as a group and a club. We know our fans will be with us and come Saturday at Tottenham, like I said, they will be there in their numbers and I'm sure they'll be singing and chanting and be right with us and getting behind us.'

Solskjaer is due to face the media at 1.30pm on Friday fully aware that another defeat at Spurs will put United's board under more serious pressure to make a change.

Harry Maguire puts himself forward for a TV grilling ahead of Man United's crunch clash with Tottenham as the Red Devils skipper leads fightback amid crisis club's week from hell

* Harry Maguire has put himself forward for TV duties for Saturday's crunch clash
* Manchester United travel to Tottenham in a must-win game for the Red Devils
* Pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their 5-0 loss to Liverpool
* Maguire will face the media before United take on Spurs in North London

Harry Maguire will lead Manchester United players' public fight-back on Saturday after the crisis club's week from hell.

The United skipper is scheduled to be grilled by broadcasters ahead of the crunch game at Tottenham, the club's first outing since Sunday's humiliating 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool.

Pre-match duties are generally shared between the squad - but this weekend Maguire is putting himself in the line of fire to face uncomfortable questions regarding the state of the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The United boss is in danger of losing his job following a disappointing start to the season and will speak at his pre-match briefing on Friday.

There has been some concern within broadcasting circles as to who would face the cameras given the manner of the loss to Liverpool, but skipper Maguire is scheduled to step in.

The England defender drew criticism on social media for his TV interview after the loss to Jurgen Klopp's side in which he said: 'I'm only here because I have to be.' The remarks appeared to suggest he did not want to conduct the interview. But it is understood Maguire was trying to convey that it was his duty to address the supporters.

Sources have indicated Maguire volunteered for the interview after the match and sought out the cameras himself.

There is a feeling Maguire may still be suffering the effects of a recent calf injury - with performances questioned - although there is a reluctance to admit that publicly.

Last night the skipper told the club website: 'It's been a tough week obviously, you can't just brush these things aside.

'To lose in the manner that we did was so disappointing.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire should be STRIPPED of Manchester United captaincy because he 'isn't a good fit' and giving it to him last year 'didn't make any sense', claims former title winner Paul Parker

* Harry Maguire was handed the captain's armband at Man United in January 2020
* Former United title winner Paul Parker feels it is time to take it off Maguire
* Parker has ripped into Maguire's 'overrated' performances and wants change

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to strip Harry Maguire of the Manchester United captaincy because he isn't 'a good fit' and the decision to promote him 'didn't make any sense,' claims former Old Trafford title winner Paul Parker.

Maguire was elevated to the role of captain following the departure of Ashley Young to Inter Milan back in January 2020.

The £80million defender - a world record fee for his position - is an established international with England but for Parker, he doesn't suit the profile required to captain a club as big as Manchester United.

Harry Maguire (right) should have the Man United captaincy taken off him, says Paul Parker

'Manchester United gave Harry Maguire the captain's armband too early,' Parker said.

'It surprised a lot of people, it didn't make any sense and it hasn't been a good fit from day one.

'With captains, it isn't about who has the biggest transfer fee or who's the best player. There's much more to it than that.

'He isn't the right player to be a captain of Manchester United at this moment in time and he has a lot in his game that needs rectifying.'

Maguire drew criticism following the 5-0 humiliation at home to Liverpool in which he said he was 'only here because I have to be' in his post-match press conference.

United's form has been woeful this season and they go into the international break sat sixth in the Premier League.

Six defeats in their last 12 in all competitions has ramped up pressure on Solskjaer and his players with Parker among those questioning whether Maguire is repaying the club's sizeable investment.

United have already shipped 17 goals in the league this season, and only Leicester and Leeds (18) have conceded more in the top 15.

Solskjaer's defence against Man City on Saturday came in at a combined figure of close to £215m, raising question marks around the quality of Maguire and Co.

Parker, speaking to BonusCodeBets, added: 'The amount of money that Manchester United paid for Maguire was far too much.

Maguire (right) has been United's captain since Ashley Young left back in January 2020. Parker feels the decision to make Maguire captain 'didn't make sense' at the time

'They wanted to buy him, made a big song and dance about the fee and then they followed through and actually paid it.

'People say he had a great summer for England but his only real test was in the final against Italy, and he was found wanting against them positionally.'

Parker is an outspoken critic of the former Leicester defender and doubled down during a recent podcast appearance.

Parker told the Talking Devils podcast: 'I look at Harry Maguire. He just puts his hand up looking for offside. He's there playing everyone on and looks to the assistant. He wants to blame other people.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Roy Keane has called Manchester United defender Harry Maguire 'a disgrace', claimed he talks 'like a robot' and labelled him 'embarrassing' after his cupped ear celebration against Albania... but the TV pundit's blunt delivery is all part of the show

* Roy Keane hasn't held back in his criticism of centre-back Harry Maguire
* Keane wasn't happy with Maguire's celebration for England against Albania
* The defender has endured some challenging moments with Manchester United

Whenever Roy Keane has a microphone in his hand, it’s probably best that Harry Maguire keeps his fingers in his ears.

Another game, another scathing assessment of Maguire’s performance and, most damningly, his character from the outspoken pundit.

You may have thought Keane would be pleased to see Maguire, a player so desperately out of form for Manchester United, rise above the chatter and the Albanian back line to head in England’s first goal.

Even if he was, that soon changed when Maguire wheeled away cupping his ears, then put his fingers into them as he slid on his knees.

Roy Keane has frequently been unforgiving in his assessments of Harry Maguire. Keane was unhappy with Maguire's celebration after scoring for England against Albania

‘I think that’s embarrassing,’ said Keane during his stint on ITV’s coverage. ‘He’s been a disgrace the last few months for Manchester United. He thinks he scores there he’s shut his critics up — embarrassing.’

Well, there is no more vocal a critic of Maguire right now than Keane and it certainly did not shut him up. Maguire insisted afterwards his celebration was aimed at no one in particular but, well, you can believe that if you really want to.

Before United’s game against Tottenham, Keane was asked to reflect on the previous 5-0 defeat by Liverpool. He ended up doing a mocking impression of Maguire’s ‘robotic’ voice. Once again, Maguire was a ‘disgrace’.

‘An absolute disgrace to the club,’ said Keane of Maguire and Luke Shaw. ‘I remember Maguire talking in the week, he was like a robot.’ Then, in a monotone drawl: ‘He was like, “Errrr, ohhh apologies to the fans”, there was no emotion behind it. Maguire talking about, “We need to come together as a group”. No. You need to sort your game out.’

Quote:
DANNY MURPHY: HARRY MAGUIRE'S REAL MISTAKE WAS NOT OWNING HIS CELEBRATION

Harry Maguire's biggest mistake wasn’t his goal celebration against Albania, it was the subsequent denial about what it meant.

Cupping his ears to silence critics was silly but understandable. It didn’t do him any favours because it overshadowed the fact he scored and played well but I also have empathy because it’s not always easy to control your emotions if you have been hammered for weeks.

But having made the ill-advised gesture, the Manchester United captain should have then been honest afterwards, explained he’d been under pressure and over-reacted.

He would have received more sympathy by owning the situation that way instead of the rather shallow claim that his signal hadn’t been directed at anyone. I don’t think many will believe that.

It’s a shame really because apart from the way he reacted to scoring, Maguire had a good night and deserved his clean sheet.

United fans will hope it marks a turning point in his form but I’d be wary of basing that wish on one game against Albania, who posed far fewer problems than Maguire will face in the Premier League.

I think the key to Maguire’s recovery is his fitness. With his size, he needs to be in peak physical condition to play well and that’s not been the case this season. He was probably rushed back too early from injury, and needs to get that side right — then better performances will follow.

It’s interesting how many England players did well at Wembley having struggled at their clubs for different reasons.

Sometimes a fresh environment can be a release, particularly for someone like Harry Kane who wouldn’t have faced the same scrutiny from England fans that he’s had at Tottenham. Kane’s hat-trick is great news for Antonio Conte, who would have noted he never strayed too far from the penalty area.

I am sure the England captain has been trying to do the right things for Spurs but he has clearly suffered mentally from seeing a move to Manchester City fall through. It has affected his form for longer than I thought it would but he will score goals again at club level, I am sure about that.

Raheem Sterling looked fresh and hungry after being sidelined too often for his liking at City. Jordan Henderson also deserves praise for his performance in midfield.

Gareth Southgate will love the fact that Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips have competition — Henderson isn’t going anywhere.
It was left to Micah Richards, Keane’s studio sidekick, to leap to Maguire’s defence on Saturday. He tweeted: ‘People: Footballers are like robots, they have no personality! Harry Maguire: Scores the opening goal for his country, celebrates with real passion whilst referencing those who have been criticising him. People: That’s embarrassing.’

By ‘People’ he means ‘Roy Keane’.

But for all those contradictions, for all the caricatures, viewers are now disappointed if they don’t get to see Keane in full flow.

Manchester United lose and they want to see Keane come off his Bob Willis long run. And it’s usually Maguire who’s taking guard. The delivery is always brutal.

It’s blunt and it’s relentless. But, whatever your view of him, it has now become a part of the show. For some, it is the show. The football is just the material. When Keane’s not there, it feels like a key part of the spectacle is missing. It’s like watching The Best of the Two Ronnies and not seeing Ronnie Barker ask for fork handles.

On the day United lost against Liverpool, social media clamoured for Sky Sports to get Keane beamed into the studio via satellite at half-time.

It’s easy to see why. There was the time United drew with Tottenham in June last year and Keane was so disgusted he said about Maguire (and David de Gea) that he ‘wouldn’t let them on the bus after the match’; that he’d be swinging punches in the dressing-room and telling them they should hang their heads in shame.

Maguire has struggled for Manchester United this season, as Keane has acknowledged. Keane said there were question marks regarding Maguire at the start of his United career

Or when he claimed: ‘If I were a striker, I’d love to be playing against someone like Harry Maguire. He clearly lacks speed and hasn’t got the positional awareness to anticipate the danger.’

It’s not the only time Keane has called Maguire slow. At the start of his United career, Keane said he ‘still had one or two question marks’ over Maguire’s defensive ability to play for England and United.

‘I always worry about his pace on the turn, I remember the first goal against Crystal Palace where he’s not doing the basics — covering round his other centre-half. Listen, he’s 26 years of age now, you’re worried if you’re pointing these things out to him.’

Maguire’s 28 now and Keane has been pointing them out ever since. And, if his latest soundbite is anything to go by, he’s not going to stop any time soon.

World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro praises Harry Maguire for playing with 'no fear' and 'taking responsibility'... but claims the Man United captain 'lacks a NASTY streak' like Italian veteran Giorgio Chiellini

* World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has heaped praise on United's Harry Maguire
* Cannavaro says that Maguire has 'no fear' and 'takes responsibility' on the pitch
* He also says the captain is worth the hefty price tag associated with his name
* Cannavaro believes Manchester United are 'investing in a talented player'

World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has heaped praise on Harry Maguire amid the ongoing criticism of the Manchester United captain.

Cannavaro says that Maguire has 'no fear' and 'takes responsibility' on the pitch. He also claims the 28-year-old works well with the United backline.

Cannavaro insists the England captain is worth the hefty price tag associated with his name but admits he 'lacks a nasty streak' like the Italian veteran, Giorgio Chiellini.

Maguire has come under fire for not only his performances, but his celebrations. Roy Keane described Maguire's reaction to his goal in England's 5-0 thrashing of Albania at Wembley as 'embarrassing'.

The TV pundit said he had been 'a disgrace' for his club in their harrowing Premier League defeats by Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, Cannavaro rates the Manchester United captain as he believes Maguire 'takes responsibility' on the pitch and controls the Red Devils from defence.

Speaking to The Sun, Cannavaro - who won both the World Cup and Ballon d'Or in 2006 - said: '[John] Stones and Maguire have shown interesting things in recent years.'

World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has heaped praise on Harry Maguire (above) amid the ongoing criticism of the Manchester United captain. Cannavaro says that Maguire has 'no fear' and 'takes responsibility' on the pitch. He also says that the 28-year-old works well with the other defenders in the United backline. However, he says Maguire 'lacks a nasty streak' like Italian veteran Giorgio Chiellini

'They can both play football, defend and fear no one. They are good individually and with the rest of the backline.

'They are points of reference for Manchester City and Man United — and undoubtedly the two best English defenders.'

However, he does say that Maguire and Stones could benefit from the 'nasty streak' Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini has.

He said: 'When the going gets tough, they take responsibility and are not afraid of trying new things.

'But Chiellini still embodies the spirit of the Italian defender and that level of concentration needed to stop a striker in a difficult moment.

'Maguire and Stones play a totally different type of football and may lack a nasty streak at times. Which Giorgio has.'

Nevertheless, Cannavaro believes Maguire is worth the £85million Manchester United paid to sign him from Leicester in 2018.

'Good players like Maguire will always be worth a lot and we should not be astonished when top clubs invest that amount on talented players.

'In Italy, we say that great strikers sell tickets but great defenders win matches.

'Players nowadays rightly cost and earn more money than before because of the finances around the game — and players are the main actors.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Ayo Kapten, tunjukkan kepada kalau United bisa bangkit

MAGUIRE: PLAYERS MUST TAKE BIG RESPONSIBILITY

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has acknowledged that the squad needs to shoulder a large part of the burden for the recent poor results, which culminated in the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial tenure on Sunday.

The Norwegian departed following Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Watford and spoke to the players at Carrington before leaving for the final time.

Michael Carrick has been placed in temporary charge of the team and he appeared at a press conference on Monday alongside Maguire to preview the upcoming Champions League clash with Villarreal.

And Maguire admitted that he was disappointed that the journey with Solskjaer was on had to come to an end after the loss at Vicarage Road.

"Well, like Michael’s said, I think it’s been a very hard time for us as players as well because of the amount of respect we have for the boss and what he’s done for a lot of us over the two-and-a-half-year period he’s been here,” Maguire told journalists.

“We've been on a journey together, it’s never nice to see someone lose their job. For him to come in and speak to us yesterday, the emotion around the place… I think yeah, it was difficult to be in.

“All the lads, it shows as a group of lads, how much we want to succeed and like you said, the result on Saturday, it wasn't good enough.

“The results recently haven’t been good enough. It's a results business and, unfortunately, Ole has paid the price for that.

“Obviously, we’ve got to take a big responsibility for that as well."

Harry also shed some light on what the team and Solskjaer discussed on Sunday prior to his departure.

“The manager's come in and he spoke to us and it was an emotional day and everyone’s got a huge amount of respect for Ole and what he’s done for the club,” he added.

“He’s a legend of the club and he will remain a legend for the club. I don’t want to go into too much depth about what he said but he wished us well.

“He said he’d be supporting us, he said we needed to get back on track, get focused for the game against Villarreal now and make sure we go into it with a positive mindset.

“One thing he did say was that he’d be supporting us and wanting us to win every game of football which shows the value of the man.”

For Maguire, the focus now is fully on getting out of the bad patch and moving forward together.

Hopefully, that will start in Spain tomorrow night (Tuesday), where a win over Villarreal will secure our place in the Champions League round of 16 with a game to spare.

“Well, I think, in football, you go through ups and downs and you go through tough times. I think, if you look at the players now at this club, you’ll speak to a lot of them and I think they’ll probably say it’s their toughest time at club level.

“So we know it’s not been good enough, the recent performances haven’t been good enough. We haven’t been delivering individually, but also collectively, and when you’re not doing it collectively, the results pay the price and, like I said, it’s snowballed from one thing to another.

“We’ve got to take huge responsibility for that and we’ve got to find something within ourselves.

“We’ve got to look forward, we’ve got to move this club forward and find something within ourselves, within the group to find that focus and mentality to produce a good performance tomorrow and get the result we need for this club.”

Harry Maguire admits Manchester United's players have to take their share of the blame for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking.

Solskjaer was axed after three years in charge on Sunday, 24 hours after a 4-1 defeat at Watford left United eighth in the Premier League.

United captain Maguire, who was sent off at Vicarage Road, accepts that the players should feel responsible for Solskjaer's departure.

'The manager has paid the price and we're all so disappointed for that,' said Maguire. 'We take huge responsibility. We haven't been good enough, individually and collectively. We know that and we spoke about that.

Harry Maguire (pictured) insists the Manchester United players must take responsibility for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking

'The players need to take responsibility for everything, on and off the football field. We're the ones that cross the white line. We were in it together, we were a group, the manager and the players.

'In football you go through ups and downs and tough times. If you speak to the players, they'd probably say it's the toughest time of their career at club level.

'Now we have to look forward and try to get the club back to where it should be. The last few months have been nowhere near good enough.'

A tearful Solskjaer spoke to the players for the last time at United's training ground on Sunday after being axed by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Maguire added: 'The manager spoke to us and it was an emotional day. Everyone has huge respect for Ole and what he's done for the club. He's a legend at the club and will remain a legend at the club.'

Michael Carrick will be in charge for the Champions League clash at Villarreal, and the Spanish club's boss Unai Emery offered his sympathies to Solskjaer.

'As a coach, you don't welcome the news that a colleague has lost his job,' said Emery. 'I have a lot of respect for Solskjaer because of his playing and coaching career. Above all, I value him as a great person.

'When there's a coaching change, there's a reaction one way or another. I expect (to face) a very good United.'

Harry Maguire hails 'world class' David de Gea after Manchester United goalkeeper produced excellent performance in victory over Norwich

* Manchester United defender Harry Maguire praised goalkeeper David de Gea
* Maguire described De Gea as 'world class' after his performance versus Norwich
* The United captain admitted that his team want to play at a quicker tempo

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire paid tribute to 'world-class' David De Gea after Saturday's 1-0 win over Norwich.

The Spanish goalkeeper had to be at his best at Carrow Road and produced excellent saves to deny Teemu Pukki and Ozan Kabak in the second half.

It gave De Gea a second consecutive clean sheet in the Premier League but it was only the 31-year-old's fifth shut-out of the season in all competitions.

'David's shown again he's a world-class goalkeeper, a great shot-stopper. When they created the chances, he was there, he made big saves,' Maguire told MUTV.

'He's played some magnificent football in his career. Since I've been here, it's probably the best form but that's probably for him to speak about.

'It's a big clean sheet for him. We haven't had enough this season, it's nice to start getting them, two on the spin and we've got to go again on Tuesday.'

United face a quick turnaround with a trip to Brentford in midweek but will aim to build on their current six-game unbeaten run.

It started after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with new interim boss Ralf Rangnick now having won two of his opening three fixtures in charge.

While there had been encouraging signs during the German's debut match against Crystal Palace, United produced a below-par showing in Norfolk and were fortunate to claim all three points at the newly-promoted side.

Maguire added: 'We wanted to dominate the game a little bit more, play on the front foot, a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more tempo, it's something we'll work on and improve on.

'We spoke about it at half-time, make sure we keep a clean sheet and we still fancy our chances to go and win the game and that's what we did.'

Cristiano Ronaldo's 75th-minute penalty proved the difference between United and bottom of the table Norwich.

The Canaries were already without a number of players due to injury issues and lost captain Grant Hanley after 21 minutes with a left shoulder problem.

Dean Smith's side host Aston Villa, the manager's former club, on Tuesday and face a crisis at the heart of defence.

'Grant landed on his shoulder and had to come off,' the Norwich boss said.

'He is a warrior so we knew when he stayed down it was a problem. Gibbo (Ben Gibson) pulled out with a tight thigh on Friday and Andrew (Omobamidele) has a stiff back.

'We are down to the bare bones but Jacob Sorensen put in a good performance (at centre-back).

'He dealt with them (Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford) really well and I was really pleased for him and with him.'
