'It's the best team in England': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'excited' to be drawn against Manchester City in Carabao Cup semi-final as he says Manchester United will be ready for challenge

* Manchester United reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals by beating Colchester
* They have been drawn against their local rivals Manchester City in last four
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side won last clash but he knows City will be fired up

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking forward to renewing hostilities with Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, but the Manchester United manager knows they will need to improve on their recent derby triumph.

Having edged past Rochdale and shocked Chelsea, the Red Devils overcame League Two side Colchester, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, on Wednesday evening.

The Essex side made the quarter-final harder than the 3-0 scoreline suggested, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial scoring either side of Ryan Jackson's own goal in a one-sided second half.

United's reward is a January double-header against Pep Guardiola's City - a side Solskjaer's men secured a superb 2-1 win at just 10 days ago.

'Fantastic days in Manchester,' the 1999 treble hero said with a smile, reflecting on the semi-final draw. 'Of course, we do really respect them and, as I said after the game at the derby last time, it's in my opinion the best team in England.

'They can out football you, so we need to get our game heads on and be ready for them again.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking forward to facing Manchester City in Carabao Cup semi-finals. He says his team will need to be ready for the challenge of Pep Guardiola's side in the last four

'But we've shown them that we can cause them problems, so I think they'll be two fantastic games.'

Rashford and Martial scored in a thrilling first half at the Etihad Stadium earlier in December, when United's counter-attacking prowess was key.

'We've looked at that game and, yeah, we're very pleased with the result and parts of that game,' Solskjaer said. 'There's thing we need to do so much better. The first 10 minutes, I was like you close your eyes and you think "we've just got to hang in there".

'We've got to stamp our authority more on them. There's not many that can do but we have to aim for that, and we have to strive for that.

'I don't think you'll beat City twice in a row or three times with the same tactics.

'So, we'll have to try to do something better than we did last time I think because I am sure Pep will definitely have his team fired up.'

City will certainly present a tougher test than Colchester, although their dogged defending and discipline frustrated the hosts in a goalless opening period at Old Trafford.

'I thought we played well first half, but we were wasteful,' Solskjaer said.

'I think we played miles better in the first half than the second half, but we scored and in games like this you need a first goal to settle any doubt and then spaces will come, and it'll flow more.

'But I think we did OK, actually. They kept a clean sheet against Palace and Tottenham, and we knew they'd be hard to break down.

'In the end, the first time they really went for it, had a chance, counter-attack and of course that settled everything.'

Rashford's excellent effort broke the deadlock and took the in-form forward's tally to 14 goals - his best United return in a single campaign.

'There will be more,' Solskjaer said. 'But I was really pleased with him today because he kept his body language.

'They kept kicking him, but he got up, he played, he ran, he had chances and made movements.

'He was a leader by the way he acted today, the way we played.

'Good goal and a very good run and he set up Anthony for his goal, so very pleased with Marcus.'

As for Colchester counterpart John McGreal, he was pleased by his side's display in front of 5,000 travelling fans at Old Trafford.

'I am really, really proud of the boys,' the U's boss said. 'When we saw the team sheet, we were quite surprised, to be honest.

'We were expecting a couple more of the younger boys to come into it, which they've been introducing in the league.

'And then when you see a fully-loaded team like that you do think "well, this is big football now" in a way, coming to Manchester United.

'But, again, we stuck to the game plan.

'The idea was to frustrate them, close the gaps in front of our back four and I thought we done that to a man, really.

'Obviously we gave away territory in possession, but I was really proud of that first-half performance.'

Manchester United struggling to sell out Old Trafford for Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City as 3,500 tickets remain on general sale 24 hours before kick-off with fans put off by £66 price after Christmas

* There are tickets priced from as much as £66 and fans haven't been swayed yet

There could be hordes of empty seats on show at Old Trafford for Tuesday's Carabao Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Manchester City.

Just under 3500 tickets remain unsold for the first leg of the semi-final clash just 24 hours before the two Manchester rivals kick off in the crunch encounter.

Tickets remain available in all four stands for United fans to purchase, with supporters so far failing to snap up the large general sale allocation available to fans who don't have season tickets.

Hordes of tickets remain on sale just 24 hours before kick-off - with some priced at a hefty £66. Old Trafford witnessed its lowest average attendance in 10 years last season at 74,879

The clash will be the first game at Old Trafford in 2020 and fans may have been put off by the prospect of spending more money immediately after Christmas.

Prices for the game in all areas of the ground range from £10 for juniors up to a hefty £66 for adults, with the latter cost seemingly putting off supporters.

Attendances at Old Trafford have fallen in recent seasons, with the average turnout at home games down to 74,879 in 2018-19 - the lowest figure since 2009-10.

That figure is likely to drop again at the end of the season, with the highest attendance this season at 73,737 for October's clash with Liverpool.

Attendances have plummeted as low as 50,783, which was the number of fans who watched United in action against Astana.

Old Trafford currently has a capacity of 76,000, the highest in the Premier League and - 14,000 more than Tottenham's new stadium, which is the second biggest.

'The first half was the worst we've played': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer questions the 'pride' of his Manchester United players after capitulation in the Carabao Cup semi-final

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Man United have a 'mountain to climb' to reach final
* The Norwegian manager told his squad to take pride in the shirt at half-time
* Manchester City scored three goals in 21 minutes before the half-time break
* Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal settled the night

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer questioned the mentality of his Manchester United stars after a first-half capitulation against bitter rivals Manchester City.

The Norwegian admitted United have a 'mountain to climb' if they are to reach the Carabao Cup final after going down 3-1 in Tuesday night's first leg.

Solskjaer told his squad to take pride in the shirt during a half-time dressing down after City scored three goals in 21 minutes before the break.

Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal looked to have taken the tie away from United before Marcus Rashford later gave them a lifeline.

'The first half, from their first goal, was the worst we've played,' Solskjaer said. 'Pride is a word you speak about at half-time.

'It's natural that your head goes down but we have to get back into the mentality quicker. It can't be me at half-time.

'Make sure you win the second half and you're still in the tie. It's a difficult task ahead of us. Even though it is a steep mountain to climb we can still climb it.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer questioned the mentality of his Manchester United stars on Tuesday

'We've got a young team. We're still learning. These experiences will stick. The second half gives me something to believe in.'

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher blasted United's central defensive pairing, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof. 'One of the centre-backs has to be brave and engage somebody,' he said.

'They can't stand there marking nobody it is absolutely killing the rest of the team.'

Guardiola warned that his City side can play better despite their first-half blitz at Old Trafford.

'We played really good before half-time,' Guardiola said. 'They changed to a diamond in the second half and we struggled a bit.

It was a hugely embarrassing opening period for Victor Lindelof and Co against their rivals

'No (it wasn't the best performance of the season). Leicester was good, Tottenham in the second game was good. We've made some good games.

'When you arrive in the semi-final, we always believed the way we play as the best weapon. We're close to the final but many things can happen in three weeks. Celebrate it tonight but I've spoken to the players already that it is not over.

'We have to be prepared if Ole plays this way (again). We were tired, which is normal. United (obviously) spoke at half-time and said 'guys, we cannot accept that'.'

Guardiola referenced United's dramatic Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain last season as reason not to rest on their laurels. He added: 'They lost to PSG last year, went to France and qualified. They are a dangerous team.'

In what felt like pointed remarks, the City manager thrice referenced the need for the club's supporters to turn up to the second leg at the Etihad Stadium in their droves.

Old Trafford was not a sell out, with little over 69,000 inside, but Guardiola was impressed with the atmosphere generated.

'Hopefully our people can support us how United supported their team,' he said. 'It's not done. Our players know it. Hopefully our fans can too.

'I have the warnings after what happened in the second half. Hopefully our fans will be in the stadium.'

Meanwhile, United club captain Ashley Young is in talks over a move to Inter Milan.

PLAYER RATINGS: The game completely passed Andreas Pereira by while Bernardo Silva was a constant thorn in Manchester United's side

* Manchester United keeper David de Gea was let down by those ahead of him
* Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggled with Raheem Sterling's movement on the night
* Kyle Walker was never picked up when he marauded forward for the visitors
* Fernandinho was imperious all night particularly in the opening exchanges

Marcus Rashford's 17th goal of the season kept Manchester United's Carabao Cup hopes alive after Manchester City had threatened to end their Wembley dreams in the first leg of their semi-final.

Pep Guardiola's defending champions were coasting at 3-0 with 20 minutes to go thanks to Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and an Andreas Pereira own goal after embarrassing their hosts with a display of dominant, mercurial football at Old Trafford.

Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan details his playing ratings from the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg...

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

David De Gea - 6

Nothing he could have done about the first-half goals and let down by those ahead of him.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5.5

Struggled with Raheem Sterling’s movement and could have been more careful when picking passes.

Victor Lindelof - 5

Unsure on the ball and unsure when to attack loose possession or drop off. A very rocky evening.

Phil Jones - 5

Looked like a man who’d played once since November. Nobody can afford to be rusty against City.

Brandon Williams – 7

A rare bright spark for United. Stuck to his task against Riyad Mahrez and forayed forward when possible.

Fred - 5

Outclassed. Too many City runners to cope with and not enough help from those around him.

Andreas Pereira - 4

The game completely passed him by. City were too quick in midfield. Own goal summed the night up.

Daniel James - 6

Starved of quick ball out to the right after initially causing problems for Benjamin Mendy.

Jesse Lingard - 5

One of very few willing to put his foot in but nothing really came off for Lingard in an attacking sense.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Captain for the night was largely reduced to chasing shadows but took his only chance with precision.

Mason Greenwood - 6

Hard not to feel sorry for the teenager. Kept coming deep in an attempt to affect the game to no avail.

David De Gea reacts in frustration after conceding a third following Pereira's own goal

Subs

Nemanja Matic (for Lingard, 46) – 6

Angel Gomes (for James, 64) – 6.5

Anthony Martial (for Greenwood, 81)

Subs not used: Romero, Mata, Dalot, Chong

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 5

Simply did not, or could not, react to City’s tactics before half-time and the game was gone by then. Barely any instruction coming from the bench either.
