Manchester United slammed for Champions League defeat in Basle by former player Rio Ferdinand: 'It was not a professional performance'

* Manchester United suffered late defeat at Basle in the Champions League
* They needed a draw for top spot, however Michael Lang's winner denied them
* Former captain Rio Ferdinand was scathing of their second half performance

Manchester United were 'unprofessional' as they suffered a surprise late 1-0 defeat at the hands of Basle in the Champions League, according to Rio Ferdinand.

United needed only a draw to guarantee top spot in Group A, however Michael Lang's winner means they must get another point at home to CSKA Moscow in the final fixture.

Former United captain Ferdinand was scathing of their second half performance, in which the visitors went deeper until being stung in the 89th minute.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: ‘No one likes losing games, and the manner in which they lost will hurt as well.

They are going to qualify, but when you have had a first half like that, as convincing in terms of the number of chances they should have dispatched, to come out in the second half and allow your emotions to take over and become so open.

'It was like basketball, an end to end game, it was not professional on Manchester United’s part at all.’

Frank Lampard was equally unimpressed, especially as United dominated the first half, hitting the woodwork twice.

Instead United became the fourth English team to suffer Champions League defeat at St Jakob-Park in five visits by Premier League sides to the Swiss club.

Lampard said: ‘They gave Basle confidence to get back in the game. It wasn’t so much end to end in the second half, United didn’t trouble Basle at all.

'Basle deserved to win the game, this was a bad performance by Manchester United. United will go through, and there will be much better performances than we saw in the second half, it was certainly a bad 45 minutes.'

Manchester United can compete for the Champions League title says Roy Keane... however Glenn Hoddle thinks they're lucky to get through the group

* Manchester United up with best teams in the Champions League says Roy Keane
* United slipped to Basle loss but will win group if they draw with CSKA Moscow
* Keane thinks United will move on quickly from the disappointing result

Manchester United can compete with the best teams in the Champions League despite their disappointing defeat in Basle, says Roy Keane.

United slipped to a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland, but will still win Group A if they draw at home to CSKA Moscow in a fortnight's time.

Keane thinks United will move on quickly from this result and have a squad comparable to the best in Europe.

Speaking on ITV, Keane said: 'The big plus for United is that their form has been that good in the Champions League that they gave themselves room to slip up tonight.

'When United have their strongest team out, they will compete with a lot of the teams in Europe. There are five or six players that played tonight that won't be in their strongest team.

'Mourinho is looking at the bigger picture – forget about tonight and move on. They'll be competing to win this title without a doubt.'

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle, however, disagreed with ex-United captain Keane about the European prospects of Jose Mourinho's men.

United, like the other four Premier League sides in the competition, could top their group, but could still face a number of major sides who are likely to qualify in second place.

They will almost certainly come first in their section, despite Michael Lang's 89th minute stunner at St Jakob-Park on Wednesday evening.

Mail on Sunday columnist Hoddle said: 'There are five English teams that could actually top their groups, but is it actually an advantage?

'You've got Atletico and Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich all potentially coming second in their group. I don't know whether United can live with any of them teams.

'They're fortunate they're in a group they'll get through and even then it’s gone to the last game. I'm not sure they're ready to step up to that level.'

Kecewa banged MU kebobolan di menit 89 n kalah....parahhh. Mikhi n Big Dave ga dibawa...hasilnya kalah di Swiss. Blind n Darmian di babak 2 makin dibully sama pemain2 Basel...harusnya Tony V n Luke Shaw yg jd RB n LB.
