A second-placed finish in last season’s Primeira Liga meant Benfica had to progress through two rounds of qualifying to reach the Champions League proper – beating Turkish side Trabzonspor, as well as FC Twente. Argentinian midfielder Enzo Perez remains a doubt for Benfica after he missed the weekend win over Vitoria Guimaraes with a knee injury. Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he will field a more experienced side than that which has started the new campaign so successfully. The boss is expected to replace the sidelined Tom Cleverley with Michael Carrick, while Darren Fletcher could be in line to return following his exploits for Scotland during the international break.

Manchester - Manchester United kembali akan mengandalkan pemain-pemain muda untuk mengawal pertahanannya di laga pertama Liga Champions. Setelah Nemanja Vidic absen, Rio Ferdinand tak ikut terbang ke Portugal.

Dikutip dari BBC, Ferdinand tak termasuk dalam daftar 19 pemain MU yang terbang ke Portugal. Sebagaimana diketahui, The Red Devils dijadwalkan akan menghadapi Benfica di matchday pertama Liga Champions pada Kamis (15/9/2011) dinihari WIB.

Ferdinand sesungguhnya baru menjalani laga pertamanya musim ini saat MU menghantam Bolton Wanderers 5-0 akhir pekan lalu. Namun sang defender kemudian kembali mengalami cedera, yang memaksanya absen dalam lawatan ke Benfica.

Belum diketahui cedera apa yang menimpa bek 32 tahun itu. Namun absennya Ferdinand dipastikan membuat lini belakang sedikit rentan, lantaran Vidic sudah lebih dulu dipastikan absen karena cedera paha.

Dengan kondisi seperti ini, Sir Alex Ferguson dipastikan akan kembali berharap pada bek-bek mudanya, yang sesungguhnya sudah terbukti tangguh di awal musim ini. Jonny Evans dan Phil Jones hampir bisa dipastikan akan dipercaya menjadi bek tengah dalam laga yang akan disiarkan langsung oleh RCTI itu.

MANCHESTER – Sir Alex Ferguson menegaskan akan menurunkan pemain berpengalaman di laga perdana penyisihan Grup C Liga Champions, Kamis (15/9/2011) dini hari WIB.

Menyambangi markas Benfica, Fergie mengaku timnya akan menghadapi pertandingan berat, terutama di sektor tengah. Meski di atas kertas lebih diunggulkan, pelatih asal Skotlandia itu tak mau meremehkan Benfica.

“Pertandingan pembuka selalu berat bagi kami. Benfica selalu kuat dan kami berharap pertandingan sengit. Saya menonton pertandingan mereka musim lalu dan mereka sangat brilian,” puji Fergie.

“Saya pikir hal terberat bagi kami adalah di lini tengah. Arena itu akan menjadi tantangan terberat,” Fergie menambahkan.

“Mereka menjalankan tiga pemain tengah. Mereka tak menaruh pemain di depan. Mereka memainkan tiga gelandang murni, jadi kami akan lihat itu,” tegasnya.

Untuk mengantisipasi agresivitas Benfica di lini tengah, pelatih yang menukangi United sejak 1986 akan menurukan pemain yang memiliki jam terbang tinggi di kompetisi Eropa. Darren Fletcher dan Michael Carrick besar kemungkinan akan turun sebagai starter.

“Tim saya di Lisbon mungkin akan berbeda dalam hal pengalaman. Kami juga mendapatkan Fletcher kembali fit. Dia terlihat baik dan melakukan tugas dengan baik bersama Skotlandia pekan lalu,” jelas Fergie.

“Saya pikir kami butuh pemain lebih berpengalaman di pertandingan. Hal terpenting adalah lolos penyisihan grup. Laga tandang melawan benfica adalah pertandingan yang harus Anda hormati,” pungkasnya, disitat Goal, Selasa (13/9/2011).

Sir Alex plots squad games



Youth will again be at the heart of United’s defence as the Reds set out on the long road to hopefully a fourth Champions League final in five seasons.

Rio Ferdinand joined fellow senior centre-back Nemanja Vidic in staying behind when Sir Alex Ferguson and his squad flew out to Lisbon. Later confirmation in the manager’s press conference that Ferdinand’s absence was “just a precaution really” suggests he could return against Chelsea on Sunday.*But in*the meantime, it seems likely that Jonny Evans, 23, and Champions League debutant Phil Jones, 19, will be paired in central defence against Benfica – not that the boss was giving anything away.

“I have not picked my team yet,” said Sir Alex. “We are coming into a period where we have the game tomorrow, then Chelsea on Sunday, Leeds United on Tuesday, then Stoke away on the following Saturday. Obviously the squad will be used but first of all we are giving a lot of consideration to Benfica. I have not decided [who will play]. I have a few things to think about. But it wouldn't worry me at all to play the [same] team that is doing well.”

The United manager is expecting "a fantastic game" against a Benfica side "delighted to be in the Champions League again" after last season's run to the semi-finals*of the Europa League, a competition won by their compatriots from Porto.

"We know all about Pablo Aimar," said Sir Alex, when quizzed about individuals in Jorge Jesus' squad. "Aimar*played against us for Valencia a few years ago, he is a very talented player. [Ezequiel] Garay and Luisao at the back are also very experienced, good players.

"It won't be easy for us, it*will be a difficult game. But it will be difficult for*Benfica too."
