Reds' Milk Cup dates

Manchester United's Group D fixtures for next month's Dale Farm Milk Cup have been confirmed by the organisers.

The Reds will begin the defence of the trophy, won last year with a late Oliver McBurnie header in the final against Co. Tyrone, by taking on Gold Coast Academy. The Australian side provide the opposition in Coleraine before a Ballymoney date against Co. Armagh.

The third group fixture sees Russian outfit CSKA Moscow tackle Paul McGuinness' youngsters on Wednesday 30 July. The Brandywell Stadium will host the game as Derry City's home ground stages matches*for the first time in the competition's 32-year history.

"It's always a nice start to the year and a traditional thing for us," explained McGuinness to ManUtd.com. "What we say is they are following in the footsteps of lots of Manchester United players in the past who have gone on to achieve big things.

"It's a really enjoyable week where the lads come in as first-years and get a real taste for what it's like to be a Manchester United player, competing in front of crowds. A lot of the players who won it last year can come back again so it will be nice for them to attempt to defend the trophy."*

United's Milk Cup draw

Manchester United's defence of the Dale Farm Milk Cup (U16s/Premier Division) will take place this summer in Northern Ireland and feature group-stage clashes against CSKA Moscow, Gold Coast Academy and County Armagh.

The young Reds have been drawn in Group D of the Premier division, with Otago and Bohemians also making up the six-team group.

United won the Premier Division last year and have featured in five of the last seven finals at U16s level. Other top teams from around the world taking part in this season's competition include*Newcastle, Benfica, Club America and Espanyol.

One of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the world, the Milk Cup, founded in 1983, has featured dozens of players who have gone on to play professional football. At the 2002 World Cup finals alone, 30 Milk Cup graduates appeared at the tournament.

Manchester United opened the defence of the Dale Farm Milk Cup by hitting 11 goals without reply against Gold Coast Academy in a totally one-sided affair.

Demetri Mitchell helped himself to four of the strikes as Paul McGuinness' side blasted out a message of intent to the other teams in the Northern Ireland-based competition. The scoreline tells its own story as the Reds finished clinicallly and produced a superb display of attacking football.

Marcus Rashford's fourth-minute free-kick got the ball rolling and trialist striker Ogo Obi added two more before Rashford netted his second on 21 minutes. Mitchell took centre stage by grabbing the next four goals, including one outstanding chip and a thumping finish high into the net.

Zachary Dearnley got in on the act following good work by the excellent Jordan Thompson before Travis Johnson went through to ensure the lead reached double figures. Thompson managed to deservedly get on the scoresheet himself with a fine solo effort.

United:*Henderson (Byrne 35); Reid (Warren 35), Williams (Borthwick-Jackson 35), Tuanzebe; Thompson, Scott, Gribben (Johnson 35), Rashford (Dearnley 47), Borg; Mitchell, Obi.

REPORT: Co. Armagh 0-3 Manchester United – Milk cup

Manchester United continued their impressive start to the Milk Cup with a very professional 3-0 win against County Armagh at the Riada Stadium in Ballymoney tonight. United made three changes to the starting line up from the first game with Dorrington, Borthwick-Jackson and Warren replacing Henderson, Tuanzebe and Reid with Borthwick Jackson taking over the captaincy.

Armagh started well and were strong and quick into the tackle as they pressed United well early while Dorrington had to be alert early on to sweep up a couple of balls which dropped over United’s defence while at the other end Demetri Mitchell looked lively again following his four goal tally in yesterday’s game as he caused Armagh a few problems when he ran with the ball.

United’s early probing paid dividends as Mitchell’s run down the right-wing found its way to Obi and his pulled back cross found Jordan Thompson on the edge of the box and his brilliant volley found the corner of the net to give United the lead. It was no less than Thompson deserved as he was very impressive again. A couple of minutes later United’s two trialists almost combined for a second goal as Borg’s driven cross from the left-wing found its way to Obi who took a good first touch but didn’t get enough power in his shot to beat the keeper.

United’s wing play was causing a lot of problems for Armagh as Mitchell’s brilliant rabona cross found Rashford just a few yards out but the ball was slightly behind him and he couldn’t sort out his feet in time to find a finish. United didn’t have long to wait for the 2nd goal however as Obi’s low cross from the left-wing found Mitchell with his back to goal inside the box and he swiveled well to and managed to finish well on the turn to make it 2-0 before half time.

Half time saw the introduction of Zachary Dearnley who replaced Obi which meant a reshuffle with Rashford moving up front. United almost got off to a perfect start to the second half as Rashford’s flicked ball found Mitchell in space on the left of the box but he opted for power over placement and his shot flew wide of the left hand upright.

United struggled to create as many chances as they had in the first half and Armagh threatened sporadically at the other end with United’s biggest scare coming from a ball over the top of the defence which the Armagh player lobbed over the oncoming Dorrington only to see it drop wide of the post while United had a similar effort at the other end as Gribbin’s beautifully chipped through ball found Rashford who lifted it over the keeper but also cleared the bar.

With United looking comfortable Paul McGuinness took the chance to give Demetri Mitchell a well deserved rest as he replaced him with Travis Johnson. Moments later United wrapped up the match as the impressive Rashford received the ball on the edge of the box before beating a number of players with a combination of step overs and feints before finishing low under the keepers dive.

United played out the rest of the match in total control and a shot from Gribbin following a slip from the defender was the only other chance but the keeper saved well at his near post. United move onto the final game of the group against CSKA Moscow tomorrow with qualification firmly in their own hands.

Manchester United: Dorrington; Warren, Williams, Borthwick Jackson; Mitchell (Johnson 61′), Gribbin, Thompson, Borg; Rashford, Obi (Dearnley 36′)

Manchester United clinched qualification via the Premier Section of the Dale Farm Milk Cup with a 2-2 draw against CSKA Moscow at Brandywell.

The physical and organised Russian outfit took the lead with a clinical finish past Dean Henderson but the Reds levelled through Callum Gribbin. The elegant midfielder was on hand to steer in after Zachary Dearnley saw a shot spilled. Demetri Mitchell was able to move into an attacking role and cause problems with his pace with Marcus Rashford also an obvious threat.

It was Rashford who edged Paul McGuinness' side ahead by sweeping in a majestic curler into the top corner following a ball forward by Charlie Scott to score for the third successive match. An injury to Rashford blunted some of United's attacking thrust, although Mitchell pushed into his role, and a scruffy equaliser following a free-kick made it 2-2 during a quiet second half.

The Reds are through to the semi-finals of the prestigious competition as the youngsters bid to retain the trophy.

United: Henderson; Williams, Borthwick-Jackson, Tuanzabe; Mitchell, Scott, Gribbin, Dearnley, Borg; Rashford (Warren).

Manchester United defeated Partick Thistle 4-0 in the Dale Farm Milk Cup semi-finals to maintain a grip on the trophy.

Trialist striker Ogo Obi made the breakthrough before half time by slotting home following a Demetri Mitchell run as, even without the injured Marcus Rashford, the Reds took control.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson gave United some breathing space by heading into the far corner of the net to capitalise on confusion inside the Thistle box. Mitchell then took his personal tally to six goals in the competition following fine play by Jordan Thompson, the England Under-17 international skipping through and slotting in. With time running out, Northern Irishman Thompson added the coup de grace in his homeland by notching from almost 25 yards out.

Tyrell Warren picked up a yellow card as the slide tackles flew in on a greasy surface but the Reds march on to the final as Paul McGuiness' side bid to retain the silverware by beating Vendee in Friday evening's final.

United:*Dorrington; Reid, Williams, Warren; Borthwick-Jackson,Tuanzebe; Mitchell,*Dearnley, Thompson, Gribbin (Johnson); Obi.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson headed the winner as Manchester United defeated Vendee 1-0 to retain the Dale Farm Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

The Reds toiled in the opening exchanges but burst into life when Zachary Dearnley had three chances in quick succession. The midfielder saw a shot comfortably saved by Benjamin Lelievre, lashed off target from a promising break and then drifted the most impressive of the efforts over the bar.

The French side created openings of their own, the best of which was spurned by Arnaud Baron who fired too high, but the closest the first half came to a goal was when Demetri Mitchell's brilliant, dipping free-kick with his trusty left foot smacked off the woodwork on 18 minutes.

However, the intensity dropped, and only Ogo Obi's drive, which was straight at Lelievre, threatened to break the deadlock as half time approached. Another set-piece by Mitchell forced Lelievre to tip the ball away at the start of the second period as the pressure started to build.

A great piece of skill by Dearnley, flicking the ball into his path, led to a shot wide at the near post and Marcus Rashford came off the bench to aid the cause despite not being fully fit. After Francois Girard lofted a rare opportunity for his side over the top, Borthwick-Jackson was in the right place at the right time on 56 minutes.

Mitchell raced down the right to scoop an inviting cross over Lelievre for Borthwick-Jackson to climb and nod into an empty net. The only scare came when Dean Henderson had to save a Pierre Durand free-kick as the Reds lifted the trophy for the sixth time.

"It was a tired performance from both teams," coach Paul McGuinness told BBC Northern Ireland.

"It was the end of a long week and it's hard to get a lot of energy going. They sat back and we gave a lot of balls away without disguising our passes.*

"We had one or two moments, it was a great free-kick that hit the bar, but we weren't really at our best tonight. The goal was a really good one, I thought, so we're pleased to win it with not our best performance."

United: Henderson; Reid (Scott 42), Williams, Tuanzebe, Borg; Borthwick-Jackson, Thompson; Dearnley, Gribbin, Mitchell (Warren 66); Obi (Rashford 52).
