Paul Pogba the £89m problem: Jose Mourinho knew what message he was sending out when he dropped him for Manchester United clash with Sevilla

* Paul Pogba started on the bench for Manchester United 0-0 draw with Sevilla
* Young Scott McTominay was preferred in midfield by manager Jose Mourinho
* Pogba was brought on in place of the injured Ander Herrera after only 17 minutes
* But this was still a chastening experience for Manchester United's record signing

This wasn't Huddersfield at home. It wasn't one of those predictable occasions at Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho could depend on a Manchester United win and drop Paul Pogba to the bench, as he did at the start of the month.

This was the last 16 of the Champions League away to Sevilla in Spain. United's first appearance at this stage of the competition in four years and one of their biggest games of the season.

So when the news was confirmed an hour before kick-off on Wednesday night that Pogba would only be a substitute at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, and young Scott McTominay would play instead, Mourinho knew exactly what kind of message this would send out.

United's £89million record signing kept out of the team by a young man making only his second Champions League start.

Pogba may have got on after 17 minutes when Ander Herrera limped off injured, but this was still a chastening experience for the Frenchman.

It has not been an easy month for Pogba. Left on the bench twice, substituted twice, he is out of form and seems to have been unsettled by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

At one point on Wednesday night, the two men even appeared to become embroiled in a heated exchange before settling their differences.

Has Pogba been getting too big for his boots at Old Trafford? Is this Mourinho laying down the law?

Or is the United manager genuinely struggling to get the best out of one of the world's top stars because he lacks the discipline and diligence that players like McTominay bring to the team?

Paul Pogba started on the bench for Manchester United's clash with Sevilla on Wednesday. The Manchester United manager knew exactly what kind of message his call would send out

On Saturday, when United played Huddersfield again, this time away in the FA Cup, he was unable to use Pogba in his preferred role on the left-side of a 4-3-3 due to illness.

On Wednesday night, Mourinho had the choice and left him on the bench.

'You always go to the one who doesn't start,' he said when quizzed about the decision before kick-off, not for the first time declining an opportunity to speak more positively about Pogba.

'Last Saturday, Paul was unable to play. We believe this is the kind of game where we need players to be 100 per cent.

'Paul gave us some doubts by not playing, by his own decision. He was not feeling good.'

Maybe Pogba was paying the price for phoning in sick on Saturday morning and then returning to training just 24 hours later.

After all, Herrera went straight back into the starting line-up alongside McTominay and Nemanja Matic on Wednesday night despite not playing since the end of last month. It appeared to backfire when he went off early on.

By then, Pogba's omission was already the main topic of debate in the BT Sport studio.

'Pogba is big enough to take it on his shoulders,' said Frank Lampard, a favourite of Mourinho's at Chelsea. 'Mourinho wants to shock him and get a reaction.

'For £90m, you want to get the best out of him. But you look at the best teams. They all have an urgency to get the ball back. You cannot have a passenger.

'You have to say "it might not be your best attribute, but you at least show urgency and get in position". It's awareness and effort. There are basics for that position; a desire to run, and an awareness of what's around you.'

Paul Scholes knows a thing or two about playing in midfield for United, and he believes that Mourinho still hasn't worked out how to get the best out of Pogba.

'Mourinho has lost a bit of trust in him, especially for a big European away game,' said Scholes. 'He doesn't play the role well defensively. Pogba has more ability than other three ahead of him, but Mourinho wants stability.

'At United, he doesn't know if they will play a three or a two (in midfield) and 18-20 months into his United career, we are still talking: where is his best position in the team?'

Quote:
PP, DID YOU PAINT THOSE TRAINERS YOURSELF?

Paul Pogba's latest indulgences are a classic pair of adidas Originals with a twist — his initials PP in garish red brushstrokes. While a standard pair will set you back £69.95, with the option to add your initials if you fancy, these are likely to be a custom-made gift from the company … although less impressed online commentators suggested he might have painted them himself.

Pogba, who is a big fan of his own initials, and also has them plastered across his cushions, luggage and even a pool table at his Cheshire home, teamed the shoes with an ICON embroidered beanie hat (£145 by trendy label Dsquared2) and his Manchester United tracksuit, which was thankfully free of red paint.

And if you're desperate for your own Paul Pogba kit, he does have a capsule collection with adidas. How does £129.95 for a pair of shoes with his name on them sound?

BY EMILY MONCKTON

Pogba was unable to inspire United to victory in the first leg of their last-16 clash in Spain

Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, can understand why Pogba's languid style can be a source of frustration.

'I would have screamed at him if I played with him,' said the former United defender. 'He would have found me a nightmare, because I would have been pushing him all over the park. It's that intensity he has been lacking.

'When you pay £90m for a player, you play him in positions which highlight his strengths, but we are talking about his weaknesses. The team does not set up to get the best out of Pogba.'

In three days' time, United face Chelsea at Old Trafford in another huge game, and not least because it pits Mourinho against his arch critic Antonio Conte.

Will he trust Pogba to carry United's hopes then? You would have thought so. But it's a sign of his diminished status at United that we don't know for sure.

Manchester United need Paul Pogba's off-field character on the pitch, says Roy Keane: 'He seems to have a big personality, whether it be social media, the cars he drives, his haircut'

* Man United star Paul Pogba did not start in Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Sevilla
* Pogba 'has got to do better' than in recent outings, according to Roy Keane
* Ex-United captain Keane wants to see Pogba express himself more on the pitch

Roy Keane has urged Paul Pogba to bring his 'big personality' to the football field.

Pogba was left out of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United lineup for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Sevilla, although he only had to wait 17 minutes to enter the action as an early substitute for injured team-mate Ander Herrera.

Since his widely-criticised display in United's 2-0 loss to Tottenham, Pogba has only made one of United's last four starting XIs, sparking talk of a feud with Mourinho.

Keane was surprised to see Pogba benched in Seville, but the former United captain acknowledges the Frenchman needs to up his game.

Speaking on ITV, Keane said: 'Pogba is a really good player. He's under lots of pressure at the moment. There's lots of speculation about him.

'He was left out tonight but you'd still have Pogba in your starting XI.

Roy Keane wants Man United star Paul Pogba to bring his 'big personality' to the pitch. Pogba didn't start against Sevilla and Keane admits his recent form hasn't been good enough. Keane says midfielder Pogba is not the only United star who needs to raise their game though

'I look at Pogba off the field. He seems to have a big personality, whether it be social media, the cars he drives, his haircut. He needs to bring that onto the football pitch.'

Keane was keen to stress that Pogba is not the only United player who has been performing below their full potential recently, citing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez as prime examples.

He added: 'Man United's problems are not just with Pogba. Lukaku's got to do better. Sanchez – I know he's new to the club – he's got to do better.

'They obviously need to reinvest in some defenders.

'You can't keep pointing the finger at Pogba but of course the lad has got to do better.'

Lukaku, who had a goal disallowed for handball in Seville, has scored 21 times in his first season as a United player, but Keane is frustrated by the Belgian's general play.

'You're talking about Man United, one of the greatest clubs on the planet,' said Keane. 'They still need to do better. And certain players need to up their game.

'Lukaku, for example — get hold of the ball. Whatever about putting the ball in the back of the net, get hold of it.

'And if you want to became one of the great strikers of Man United and you get the chance, like he did tonight, you've got to score in these tight games.'

Kritik Mourinho Akan Buat Pogba Lebih Baik
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detikSport

Paul Pogba wants Jose Mourinho to make him feel valued again... but Manchester United star's camp have begun sounding out Europe's top clubs over a possible summer transfer

* Paul Pogba was left on the bench for Manchester United on Wednesday night
* Youngster Scott McTominay was preferred in central midfield instead of Pogba
* It was the second time in four games that Pogba has been dropped to the bench
* Pogba and Jose Mourinho's relationship has taken a turn for the worse recently
* Frenchman's camp have begun sounding out Europe's top clubs about a move

Paul Pogba wants more support from Jose Mourinho to help him through the most difficult spell of his Manchester United career.

United's record £89million signing has fallen out of favour and was left on the bench when Mourinho selected Scott McTominay in midfield for the 0-0 draw with Sevilla in Spain on Wednesday night.

It is understood the 24-year-old Frenchman believes he has been harshly treated by Mourinho and wants to feel valued again.

Pogba's camp have even begun sounding out Europe's top clubs to see if there could be a buyer for the unhappy star this summer.

United would strenuously oppose any attempt by Pogba to leave only 19 months after he returned to the club from Juventus for a then world-record fee.

They do not want a repeat of the situation with Angel di Maria, who lasted just one season after signing from Real Madrid in a British record £59.7m deal before joining Paris Saint-Germain.

However, it is a sign of Pogba's frustration that his agent Mino Raiola has taken the first steps towards assessing other options.

Pogba has previously demonstrated a readiness to walk away from United, having left to join Juventus in 2012.

Paul Pogba wants to feel valued again by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho. The club-record £89million acquisition has fallen out of favour with the Red Devils manager

But even if United were prepared to countenance selling a player who still has more than three years left on his contract, Raiola would have to find a club willing to pay a big transfer fee as well as his £200,000-a-week wage.

Real Madrid were linked with Pogba when he returned to United from Italy in the summer of 2016 and are among a handful of clubs capable of affording him.

However, they are understood to have made a priority of signing Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois this summer, with goalkeeper David de Gea set to stay at United.

Mourinho recently dismissed speculation over Pogba's future as 'lies and bull***t', and it is understood there is no appetite among the Old Trafford hierarchy to sell.

The United manager is set to face more questions on Friday over Pogba's prospects of returning to the starting line-up for the home Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.

What must Jose Mourinho do to make Paul Pogba his Special One? A premature parting of the ways suits no-one at Manchester United

* Paul Pogba started on the bench for Manchester United on Wednesday night
* Youngster Scott McTominay was preferred in central midfield instead of Pogba
* Pogba and Jose Mourinho's relationship has taken a turn for the worse recently
* Senior United players are tiring of Pogba's antics and want him to focus more
* The arrival of Alexis Sanchez last month is believed to have upset Pogba's ego

How has it come to this for Paul Pogba? How has a return to Manchester United that promised so much for the world's most expensive footballer at the time reached such a low point?

When Pogba came off the bench in Seville on Wednesday night, it was the second time in his last four games that he had been relegated to the role of substitute.

On the other two occasions, Jose Mourinho replaced United's record £89million signing well before the end with his team losing.

This is not how it was meant to be when Pogba rejoined United from Juventus 19 months ago to a rap video fanfare and social media frenzy. He was a world-record buy. A statement signing. The kind of galactico acquisition that United chief Ed Woodward loves to make, designed to propel Mourinho's Old Trafford revolution to a new level.

To hear Mourinho talk about Pogba in recent weeks, however, you would not think he is very special at all. And, surely, that's the point of all this. To knock him down a peg or two.

Cracks have appeared in their relationship since the two men were involved in a heated touchline exchange at Tottenham at the end of last month.

There is little doubt Mourinho's decision to start Scott McTominay, a talented but raw youngster, ahead of Pogba is aimed at bringing the Frenchman into line.

McTominay gave a disciplined performance in the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Wednesday, if lacking in the kind of fireworks that Pogba can produce.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho (right) has to mend his relationship with Paul Pogba. Pogba started Wednesday night's Champions League last-16 0-0 draw at Sevilla on the bench. It was the second time in four matches that Pogba was consigned to the substitutes' bench

He put in a shift for his team and it's this which Mourinho wants Pogba to take on board. The United manager is prepared to play him in the position he wants on the left-hand side of midfield, in a new, 4-3-3 formation.

What he will not do is give the player a 'free' role.

Even David Beckham had to do the dirty work at United, Mourinho pointed out on Wednesday.

'When the team have the ball you attack. When you don't, you defend,' he said. 'The top teams in the world - everybody works and has tactical discipline.

'The next time I see David Beckham, I'm going to ask him, "When you played right wing for United, when their left back attacked, did you stay looking in the stands or track back?" Everybody knows I am not a big fan of Roy Keane or Paul Scholes, but I will ask them if they tracked back.'

McTominay could not be a more different character to Pogba. He is a reserved individual raised in the traditions of the club.

'Maybe it's because he's this kind of profile,' said Mourinho after McTominay played at Huddersfield on Saturday when Pogba was absent with an illness that has still not been explained. 'A normal haircut, no tattoos, no big cars, no big watches, humble kid.'

The comparison with Pogba's flamboyant hairstyles, Rolls-Royce, bling jewellery, dance moves and elaborate handshake routines was plain to see.

When the former Juventus man came off the bench in Seville, he was sporting a new red stripe in his hair. It was certainly more striking than his performance.

Pogba didn't play badly but we expect so much more from a player of his calibre and there have not been nearly enough big performances from him in a United shirt.

The ostentatious image has not gone down well with everyone at United. Senior players are tiring of his antics and feel that he needs to focus more on his football.

In December, Sportsmail revealed that support staff were sent to Pogba's house in Hale Barns to get him out of bed when he failed to report for training.

From Pogba's point of view, he has been unsettled by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez as United's new pin-up boy.

Woodward revealed earlier this month that the video posted to announce that signing smashed records on the club's Facebook and Instagram accounts. This might not matter to most players, but it has irked Pogba, who is very active on social media and proud of his stats.

The events that have followed suggest his ego has been bruised.

His representatives are said to have contacted United over a pay rise to bring him into line with Sanchez's £600,000 a week.

Then reports emerged in his native France suggesting that he was having 'regrets' over his return to United. On Thursday, there was talk of his representatives sounding out potential buyers this summer, such is his frustration.

It is very unlikely to come to that. The club have invested too much in Pogba to sell him so soon.

Pogba needs to knuckle down and Mourinho needs to bring him back into the fold. A premature parting of the ways suits no-one.

DisUnited over Paul Pogba: Is a battle of the super agents at the heart of problems for Jose Mourinho and his £89million midfielder?

* Paul Pogba's problems at Manchester United may be connected to super agents
* His representative, Mino Raiola, has irked United by regularly coming to training
* Jose Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, may move to add Pogba to his stable

Super is often the appropriate prefix for Paul Pogba. A superstar at a superclub in a supercar. The same goes for his representative, Mino Raiola, one of that cluster of super-agents whose wealth is astronomical and power even greater - and herein lies a healthy portion of Pogba’s problem.

Jose Mourinho is known to have held reservations about Raiola’s management of the central midfielder earlier this season and that sense of unease has only heightened in recent weeks amid Alexis Sanchez’s arrival and a worrying dip in form.

Mourinho has been agitated by Raiola’s visits to the club’s training ground over the past few months. Nice and familiar when United are flying, an annoyance when they are not.

Senior players have noticed too, disturbed by Pogba’s demeanour at Carrington and left wondering if he is worth the fuss. It needs a wise head to sit him down. These are testing times, regardless of whether the most expensive midfielder in the world performs against Chelsea.

That everything surrounding the player is so grandiose grates on a manager who, even allowing for ever more frequent public disputes, usually places the common goal of his squad ahead of anything else.

That club staff had to be deployed to fetch Pogba from his bed in Hale Barns after failing to report for training on time before Christmas did not go down well. Was this the attitude of a man who truly wanted to maximise his potential? What, you wonder, has Raiola been telling him before and since?

Paul Pogba's problems at Manchester United may be connected to warring super agents. The £89m midfielder has had a strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho this season. Pogba's representative, Mino Raiola, has irked United by regularly coming to training. There is talk that Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes, may move to add Pogba to his stable

The friction which has bubbled under for some weeks became public just days after Sanchez came from Arsenal with a monstrous pay packet dwarfing the Frenchman’s. Mourinho substituted Pogba with 27 minutes to go at Tottenham.

The game had already gone, United two down and aimless going forward, and it is widely accepted that Pogba did not do enough defensively at Wembley. Mourinho has twice overlooked him since, preferring 21-year-old Scott McTominay.

Pogba was on the bench at Sevilla — arguably United’s biggest game so far this season — until Ander Herrera’s 17th-minute injury. To watch him warm-up among the substitutes in southern Spain was to view an unhappy man, lacking focus, constantly misplacing simple passes to Matteo Darmian in the drills. That he fitted in nicely as United escaped with a draw was a surprise.

Raiola has watched all this with interest. That Real Madrid have been sounded out over the level of their interest is frankly astonishing for a player costing £89million who is only 18 months into a five-year contract. Yet, with all these situations, there is an undercurrent and Jorge Mendes, another agent with the super prefix, has considered the possibility of adding Pogba to his stable of clients which include Mourinho and United’s goalkeeper, David De Gea.

Whether that is attainable is another matter given Pogba’s loyalty to Raiola, who has moved Henrikh Mkhitaryan in and out of Old Trafford while Mourinho has been in situ.

Ajax revealed last week that Mendes had contacted them about Patrick Kluivert’s son, Justin. His agent? Mino Raiola. The games may well be afoot between the two rivals.

The strongest relationship Raiola holds at United is with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was interested in signing Pogba from Juventus two years before his 2016 arrival. Lines of communication were open.

They also remain open between Mourinho and Pogba now but the bond is strained, certainly at its worst since he re-joined the club. The heated discussions in private are evidence of that. So too the constant debate over his best position — which the manager has engaged with — and the inferences about his lifestyle.

Nemanja Matic, in favour with Mourinho, spelled out his manager’s modus operandi. ‘In every team he wants to have a good midfield,’ said Matic, speaking generally. ‘Jose likes players who can control the game and give balance to the team. I’m trying to give my best. If this is enough I don’t know, but I’m happy because I’m playing almost every game.

‘We’ve got a good relationship and even before that at Chelsea. There’s nothing to hide. I try my best and he respects that.’

Matic’s workload will be heavy on Sunday. Herrera marked Eden Hazard out of this fixture last April but a hamstring injury rules him out. Scrutiny will also be on Pogba, who is set for a recall, given the defensive responsibility required should they play a midfield three.

'Eden is a player who is very difficult to neutralise,’ said Mourinho. ‘Of course he is a very important player for them, but Willian is also an important player for them.

‘Ander’s job on Eden was important. He did an amazing job, but these are different matches, conditions, circumstances, different players.’

The circumstances seemed to have changed for Pogba, too, even if the situation remains salvageable.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is a 'young man lost in the game', insists Graeme Souness

* Paul Pogba was restored to Manchester United's starting XI against Chelsea
* The French star has been out of favour with boss Jose Mourinho in recent weeks
* Sky pundit Graeme Souness thinks he does not know what he is doing in games
* The former Liverpool manager labelled Pogba: 'A young man lost in the game'

Manchester United's record signing Paul Pogba is 'lost' and doesn't know 'what he’s doing in a game, according to Graeme Souness.

Pogba has been making the headlines for the wrong reasons in recent weeks, with his relegation to the bench against Sevilla in midweek prompting questions about his relationship with United boss Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho recalled the £89million midfielder for Sunday's Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford. But Souness remains unconvinced Pogba is making the most of his natural attributes.

'I’m not really sure of what type of midfielder player he is,' Souness said before the game.

'I think he'd like to be a playmaker. Maybe one day that might be his best position but when you have that much power, energy and athleticism, utilise that - be someone that can get box to box, someone that every time the ball goes wide, you're 6ft 4in, get in the box, no one wants to pick him up if he arrives late into the box.

'Right now I see a young man lost in the game, I'm not sure he knows what he’s doing in a game when I watch him.'

Pogba was axed for the recent games against Sevilla and Huddersfield – as well as being substituted early against Tottenham and Newcastle – but Mourinho claims his £89million record signing has taken it well.

Youngster Scott McTominay has been the beneficiary of the Frenchman's omission but both took to the pitch to face Chelsea on Sunday.

Question marks over his quality are unlikely to fully disappear, however, after he was brushed off the ball before Chelsea countered to take the lead through Willian on Sunday.

But after that opening error, Pogba went on to play well in United's midfield as the Red Devils emerged 2-1 winners in the top of the table match.

Anthony Martial boldly claims Paul Pogba is the 'best midfielder in the world' and predicts his compatriot will win the Ballon d'Or in next five years

* Anthony Martial has labelled Paul Pogba as 'the best midfielder in the world'
* The Frenchman also believes Pogba can win the Ballon d'Or in the next five years
* Manchester United's £89million midfielder has had his form questioned lately
* The 24-year-old has been benched by Jose Mourinho following poor run of form

Anthony Martial has leapt to the defence of his Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba following the midfielder's poor run of form.

Jose Mourinho's relationship with the club's £89million record signing has been questioned in recent months after a number ropy performances left him on the bench.

However, the midfielder is still highly thought of among the United squad after his compatriot boldly claimed Pogba is 'the best midfielder in the world' and believes he can still win the Ballon d'Or in the next five years.

Anthony Martial has labelled United team-mate Paul Pogba as 'the best midfielder in the world'. The French winger also believes Pogba can win the Ballon d'Or in the next five years

'I would say Paul is probably the best midfield player in the world,' Martial said, according to the Daily Star.

'Paul is very strong mentally and very sure of himself. He's a big guy, he s very technical on the ball and has lots of endurance.

'And he's still young, so he has a lot to work on and he can get even better.

'If he continues to improve, then I think he's going to win the Ballon d'Or award in the next five years.'

Following the breakthrough of Scott McTominay, Pogba has had even more competition for a place in United's midfield.

However, Pogba is likely to feature when the Red Devils play against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Kritik Keras Neville: Pogba Tampil Cuma untuk Youtube dan Instagram

Jakarta - Paul Pogba kembali mendapat kritik.

Gol pembuka Crystal Palace tercipta tak lama setelah Pogba gagal memanfaatkan peluang.

Cara dia melakukan sesuatu, seperti hanya candaan. Tak kaget jika Mourinho mencadangkannya dalam beberapa pekan terakhir," ungkapnya.

Pogba sangat aktif di media sosial. Dia mem-posting beragam hal ke akun Instagram pribadinya (@paulpogba) yang kini punya 21,1 juta pengikut.
