MOURINHO EXPLAINS FELLAINI SUBSTITUTION

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed Marouane Fellaini was withdrawn soon after entering the field against Tottenham due to an ongoing knee problem.

The Belgian midfielder lasted only seven minutes after coming on with Juan Mata as part of a double change for Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba, during the second half of the disappointing 2-0 defeat at Wembley.

“I think I was unlucky with Fellaini as I wanted to change a little bit the dynamic of the team,” the boss told BT Sport. “After a couple of minutes, he was injured. It’s always the same thing. It is the lateral ligament. I don’t think it’s a big, big thing but he was immediately feeling something and telling us he couldn’t carry on.”

Fellaini must now be considered a doubt for Saturday's visit of Huddersfield Town to Old Trafford as the Reds look to get back on track by avenging the surprise defeat at the John Smith's Stadium earlier in the season.

The manager also suggested in his post-match press conference that it is the third time the midfielder has been hampered by the issue with his knee.

On Fellaini's problem, Jose told MUTV: "They [the medical team] are still working on it. It's an injury and I feel sorry for him personally and I feel sorry for the team because he's an important player for us."

Mourinho shed further light on Fellaini's injury when asked about it during his press conference. "It's not an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament], it’s not a complete rupture of any structure of the knee, so we are not going as far as that. Manchester - Manajer Manchester United Jose Mourinho menyebut Marouane Fellaini sebagai pemain yang ia butuhkan. Mourinho pun memintanya segera teken kontrak baru.

Kontrak Fellaini dengan MU akan habis di musim panas. ESPNFC mengabarkan kalau bulan September lalu Fellaini sudah menolak tawaran kontrak baru dari The Red Devils.

Situasi terkait kontraknya saat ini memungkinkan pemain internasional Belgia tersebut juga sudah bisa menegosiasikan perjanjian prakontrak dengan klub lain.

Fellaini sendiri baru saja mendapatkan cedera ketika MU kalah 0-2 dari Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 pada tengah pekan. Momen ini pun digunakan Mourinho untuk minta Fellaini segera teken kontrak baru, dengan nuansa kelakar.

"Kemarin saya bilang kepadanya, 'diam saja dan teken kontraknya'," ucap Mourinho berkelakar, seperti dikutip ESPNFC. "Saya bilang ke dia agar jangan ambil risiko. Segeraa teken kontraknya sebelum tahu kadar cederanya."

Bicara lebih lanjut mengenai cedera Fellaini, Mourinho baru bisa memastikan kalau itu bukanlah cedera ACL dan betapa Fellaini merupakan pemain yang ia butuhan di skuat.

"Kami belum tahu lebih jauh (soal cedera) tapi kami membutuhkannya. (16 besar) Liga Champions akan dimulai dan ada banyak partai berat untuk dimainkan, dan mungkin kami akan kehilangan dirinya selama beberapa pekan," tuturnya di Express.co.uk.

Kontrak Fellaini bersama MU memang habis akhir musim ini. Manajer MU Jose Mourinho sempat mengungkapkan bahwa dia ingin pesepakbola Belgia itu bertahan karena penting dalam skema permainannya.

Namun, Fellaini berpotensi hengkang lantaran menolak tawaran kontrak baru dari Setan Merah. Menurut kabar yang berembus, pemain berdarah Maroko itu didekati Galatasaray dan Besiktas. Kepala komunikasi Besiktas, Candas Tolga, mengungkapkan bahwa klubnya tidak membutuhkan Fellaini. Menyusul berlimpahnya stok pemain yang di posisi yang sama dengan Fellaini.

"Pekerjaan saya dimulai ketika mereka (Besiktas) memutuskan untuk mendatangkan pemain. Saya tak tahu menahu soal Fellaini," ungkap Tolga di Calciomercatoweb.

"Lagipula saya kira Besiktas tak membutuhkan pemain di posisi itu. Kami memiliki Gary Medel, Atiba Hutchinson, Oguzhan Ozyakup, Tolgay Arslan, dan Necip Uysal di pos gelandang," jelas dia.

Di musim ini, Fellaini gagal tampil maksimal bersama MU. Sejak awal musim, Fellaini silih berganti dihantam cedera sehingga baru membuat 16 penampilan di seluruh kompetisi tapi sudah menyumbang lima gol.

FELLAINI PRAISED BY MOURINHO AFTER RETURN

Marouane Fellaini earned special praise from Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho after making his return from injury as a substitute in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

The Belgium international worked hard to ensure his side maintained the lead despite intense pressure from the visitors, and he should be a great option for the upcoming matches against Sevilla on Tuesday, in the Champions League, and the weekend Emirates FA Cup quarter-final with Brighton & Hove Albion.

"I want to praise every player but Marouane Fellaini had to go to knee surgery," said Mourinho at his post-match press conference.

"To return ahead of time, he did fantastic work to recover outside the club with the people who have his trust.

"He arrived to train a couple of days ago and made himself available. And before the game, I had to ask him how many minutes he could play - 10, 15 or 20 max?"

Fellaini in fact played for almost half an hour, including six minutes of injury time, after replacing goalscorer Marcus Rashford in the 69th minute. Meanwhile, his fellow Belgian in the United side, Romelu Lukaku, was also earning plaudits for his display in attack against the Merseysiders.

"In every press conference I come to, I say the same about Lukaku," said Mourinho.

"His performance was fantastic. He didn't score but, for me, he's been fundamental. Even in the last part of the game, there were a few corners [to defend] in the six minutes of injury time and Lukaku was there and he was dominant."

Say what you want about Marouane Fellaini, the fact is that Manchester United’s collapse came after Jose Mourinho substituted the Belgium midfielder on Tuesday night.

Would Fellaini have prevented either of the goals from Wissam Ben Yedder? Would he have been a more effective target man in those desperate final minutes for United? We’ll never know.

But on a night when he was once again a controversial inclusion in United’s line-up, it was hard to point the finger at Fellaini.

Four years on from United’s last Champions League knockout tie at Old Trafford, some things don’t change.

He still has the capacity to polarise opinions like no other here, even as it appears he is nearing the end of his United career.

When Fellaini played against Bayern Munich in United’s last home appearance at this stage of the competition on April 1, 2014 – not his finest hour when he failed to track Bastian Schweinsteiger for Bayern’s equaliser – few would have bet on David Moyes’s controversial, first signing still being at the club four seasons later.

The ungainly Belgian has survived under Louis van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho to such an extent that when the United manager went looking for someone to partner Nemanja Matic in midfield against Sevilla, he settled on Fellaini.

And not Paul Pogba, who returned to the squad after missing the win over Liverpool with a gashed leg but was also among the substitutes.

No, Mourinho opted for Fellaini who had only started four previous games this season and none since the group defeat in Basle nearly four months ago following a succession of knee problems.

It was a surprise and came on the day that Fellaini was pictured in GQ Magazine with his trademark mop of curly hair tied in bunches, making him look suspiciously like Mickey Mouse at first glance.

Some United fans will have their own views on that but Fellaini is the kind of power player that Mourinho likes; one who will follow orders and sacrifice himself for the team.

He can also be very erratic and this game was a case in point. Not surprisingly, he looked a little rusty in the early stages. There was wasted possession and some unnecessary fouls as Joaquin Correra and Franco Vazquez caused United all sorts of problems, but a crunching touchline tackle on Sergio Escudero earned an encouraging pat on the back from Mourinho.

Fellaini also fashioned United’s two best chances during the hour he was on the pitch. Both owed much to his tenacity in winning back possession close to the Sevilla box.

In the first instance, in the 38th minute, he played a one-two with Alexis Sanchez and forced a fine save from Sergio Rico at his near post. In the 58th minute, Fellaini went directly for goal but guided his effort over.

It was his last contribution to the game as Mourinho sent on Pogba and greeted his No.27 with a warm handshake.

Sevilla promptly scored twice – and could have scored several more – while Pogba’s contribution was disappointing for a player of his status.

As Mourinho and his players trooped off dejectedly at the end, Fellaini could afford to feel less guilty than most on what looks like being his last Champions League appearance for the club.

Unless United significantly increase their contract offer, we are unlikely to see him back at Old Trafford next season. Whatever your opinion of him, he won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Monaco have joined the list of clubs to have enquired about Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at United and is expected to leave after failing to find agreement over the new terms offered him at Old Trafford.

Besiktas have long been considered favourites to sign the Belgium international though Fellaini's camp are also understood to have been sounded out by Paris Saint-Germain, who also like his compatriot Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham, other English sides and clubs in China.

JOSE BELIEVES FELLAINI WILL STAY AT UNITED

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes United’s last-gasp matchwinner, Maraoune Fellaini, will sign a new contract and continue to be a Reds player next year.

United’s towering Belgian powered above the visiting rearguard to head home an injury-time winner against Arsenal in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the season, but boss Mourinho believes the 30-year-old is willing to commit his future to the club after months of speculation.

Jose told MUTV and reporters in the post match press conference: “I believe he will stay. He’s a good player and he can be used in many different circumstances, according to the nature of the game.

"That’s why we want him to stay and that’s why I believe that he is going to stay.

"The position is we are almost there. But, in football, almost is not enough. I think we are almost there but I can't celebrate because almost is not enough.

"I want to see the white paper with the United crest and I Mr Ed Woodward's signature and Maraoune's signature on it."
