Real Madrid vs. Manchester United: 5 Talking Points from Champions League Draw

According to Jose Mourinho, it was the match the world was waiting for. Fortunately for the world, it didn't disappoint.

Real Madrid and Manchester United played to a tense and exciting 1-1 draw on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Madrid's Estadio Bernabeu. The result favors United, who will host the return leg at Old Trafford in three weeks' time.

But Mourinho isn't ready to concede just yet (via @BBCSport). And here's guessing United manager Sir Alex Ferguson feels the same way.

Keep reading for five talking points from Wednesday's match.

Advantage United

The 1-1 draw will obviously please Manchester United more than Real Madrid.

Real sparkled in the opening 15 minutes, peppering David De Gea's goal and dominating possession as United fought to stay level.

But United didn't just stay level. The Red Devils took the early lead through Danny Welbeck and in the process scored a valuable away goal.

That away goal means United will head into the second leg in three weeks knowing a 0-0 draw would be enough to advance to the quarterfinals. Not that these two teams are likely to finish a match with that scoreline.

Even more encouraging for United fans is the history that favors their club:

Did the Ref Miss a Call?

Controversy erupted in the 55th minute as Manchester United were left crying out for a foul—and possibly a game-changing red card.

United defender Patrice Evra streaked toward Real Madrid's goal through the middle of the field, only to be brought down by Real's Raphael Varane. German referee Felix Brych waved play on as United manager Sir Alex Ferguson screamed for a foul.

Had Brych called a foul, he likely would have been required to send off Varane, who was the last defender. Neither happened, however, and the match continued.

Was it the right (non-) call?

Foul, red card. Simple as that. Big mistake.

David De Gea Was Brilliant

Playing pretty much in his own backyard, 22-year-old Spanish keeper David De Gea kept Manchester United in the game with a series of saves throughout the 90 minutes.

He started early, and brilliantly, reaching Fabio Coentrao's curled effort with the very edge of his finger in the sixth minute. With the slightest of touches, De Gea deflected the ball onto the post and kept the score level.

De Gea then stopped Mesut Ozil later in the first half before foiling Coentrao again in the 61st minute. This time, Sami Khedira fed Coentrao on the left side of the box, and De Gea scrambled to keep Coentrao's volley out with a sprawling, eye-catching save.

Finally, in the 79th minute, De Gea reacted quickly to stop Khedira's bouncing, deflected shot from the edge of the box.

All in all, it was a superb performance from the Spanish stopper. Might it buy him a break from the customary stream of criticism he receives?

The most optimistic of United fans would claim De Gea has world-class potential. Even the cautious, though, should admit that he has skill and deserves more time to develop fully.

Who Won the Tactical Battle?

Real Madrid dominated early, but Manchester United took the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute. The match remained open until halftime, when Sir Alex Ferguson made a change.

The United manager did not change personnel at halftime. Instead, he opted to tweak his formation to a flat 4-4-2. The result was a tighter match that was slightly less entertaining for neutrals but more manageable from United's perspective.

Jose Mourinho reacted by swapping Gonzalo Higuain for Karim Benzema up top. Later, he took off Angel Di Maria, perhaps Real Madrid's best player of the night, in favor of Lady Edith Luka Modric. Finally, Pepe replaced Xabi Alonso late as Mourinho appeared ready to play for the second leg.

So did Mourinho make the right moves? Or is The Daily Telegraph's Paul Hayward right to suggest the Portuguese manager had other matters on his mind?

Quote:

Mourinho has always been brilliant at changing games from the bench. His political problems here seem to have drained his confidence.

Exactly How High Can Cristiano Ronaldo Leap?

Cristiano Ronaldo didn't just leap to score his headed goal in the 30th minute. He levitated.

Ronaldo, who turned 28 earlier this month, looked less like a footballer than an NBA star when he towered above Patrice Evra to power home Real Madrid's equalizer.

Now in his prime, Ronaldo continues to flash both skill and physical prowess that would make any footballer jealous. His latest goal only underscored his status as world-class, both as a footballer and an athlete.

Quote:
What. A. Jump. On that header. Evra had time to count all of Ronaldo's toes. Backward. In Latin.

buat kagawa kayanya under form lagi..keliatan gampang dijegal sama pemaen madrid, apa masih lom terbiasa sama style united..dont know deh.
counter kita juga hampir membuahkan hasil tapi sayang lom beruntung aja..
tapi gw yakin MU bisa lolos, mengingat kita maen DI OT..
overall buat semalem..
menurut gw man of the match : Super Spaniard De Gea
Best Actor of the match: Sergio Ramos, berhasil memprovok wasit buat ngasih kartu kuning RVP n Valencia
Worst Actor of the match: Referee..Gmpng bgt ngasi kartu sama RVP, Rafael n Valencia..padahal menurut gw biasa2 aja n bukan di sengaja..

Imbas dari memasukan Jones, memang pertahanan kita lebih solid secara Jones bisa memarking pemain vital lawan, tapi efek nya kita kurang kreativitas dalam menyerang, jones bagus menghalau serangan tapi kurang efektif ketika create attack,
Rafael tadi malam seperti udah ditargetkan ama Mou buat di Gangbang ama CR bergantian dengan Ozil dan sesekali Di Maria, keliatan banget doi kewalahan di babak pertama, tambah lagi ngga ada nya winger yg back up ( sebelum Vale masuk) sehingga serangan langsung menusuk ke area nya

Default Re: [UCL] Real Madrid vs Manchester United

Rating Manchester United Players in the 1-1 Draw Against Real Madrid

Here are the player ratings from Manchester United's close 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu:

David De Gea: Two world class saves in each half do not begin to do justice to the Spanish stopper's performance today. His performance today should show all his detractors why Sir Alex Ferguson made him the second most expensive goalkeeper in history. Magnificent saves in the biggest game of them all showed his mettle! 10/10

Rafael Da Silva: Rafael had his hands full, trying to cope against the magnificence of Cristiano Ronaldo. The young Brazilian looked sort of dodgy in the first half, culminating in his booking towards the end of the half. However, halftime seemed to have calmed him down and he rarely put a foot wrong in the second half. 6/10

Rio Ferdinand: People who say Rio no longer has a future at United should watch this game. A colossus at the heart of defence, he showed lots of composure. His ability to marshal his defence against a firepower-packed Madrid attack was also clearly visible. He also made a couple of great blocks in the second half when United were put under the cosh. 8/10

Jonny Evans: Much-maligned before this season, Evans put in another accomplished performance to bolster his growing reputation. He was a study in concentration through the game and showed calmness and assurance throughout the game. 8/10

Patrice Evra: Evra's was probably the least impressive performance from the United back line. While he probably couldn't be blamed too much for Real's goal, his tendency to drift out of position did put the Red Devils in trouble a couple of times. He was also unfortunate not to get Raphael Varane sent off for a clear last-man foul. 6/10

Phil Jones: Jones was picked to do a job of shackling Ronaldo, and he did fulfill this mandate. His attitude summed up the Red Devils' mentality in this game, as they looked to return to Old Trafford with a minimum of parity in this tie. However, he needs to improve his distribution in the return leg, if United are to have greater control of the game. 7/10

Michael Carrick: It is ironic that three of the most criticized players at United—De Gea, Evans and Carrick—were among United's three most impressive performers. Carrick was amazingly calm and assured on the ball, as shown by his passing statistics. Carrick achieved an 87 percent pass success rate, the highest among his fellow United starters. He was also impressive defensively as he dovetailed well with Jones to provide a screen in front of the Manchester United defence. 8/10

Wayne Rooney: Rooney was probably United's least impressive performer in this game. While he did get the assist for United's goal, his overall play was disappointing. The ex-Everton man struggled to get into the game as he was first stationed on the right, then on the left and finally in the hole. United need Rooney to perform at his best in the return leg to stand any chance of securing their passage into the next round. 5/10

Danny Welbeck: What an inspired selection by Sir Alex! Welbeck's inclusion definitely came out of the left field, but the young England striker justified his manager's decision fully. Welbeck was full of running and caused Madrid quite a few problems with his speed and willingness to press. It was definitely a statement of Welbeck's performance tonight that he didn't look out of place in a game that had such a galaxy of footballing stars. 8/10

Shinji Kagawa: On one hand, Kagawa showed some good touches, and his ability to receive the ball on the half turn to create space for himself was evident. On the other hand, he struggled to cope with the physicality of the Real Madrid midfield. Overall, the Japanese international must do better. 5/10

Robin van Persie: Oh, how did he not score from his chance in the first half? While United might end up regretting RvP's miss, his play was generally very good in a game where he was involved very rarely. Hopefully, he will have his shooting boots back on for the return leg. 6/10

Substitutes:

Ryan Giggs: The United veteran came on for his 150th European appearance for Manchester United but didn't really get involved in the game. There were also a couple of times in the second half when he was caught out in possession. Sir Alex and United fans probably expected more from their highest appearance maker. 5/10

Antonio Valencia: Once again, the United fans probably would have expected some more penetration and running from the Ecuadorian winger. However, Madrid dominated the possession in the time he was on the pitch and he didn't really see enough of the ball to make an appreciable impact. N/A

Anderson: The Brazilian midfielder had too little time to make an impact. N/A

Danny Welbeck Goal Exposes Real Madrid Weakness and United's Route to Victory

Manchester United might have come away from their UEFA Champions League match with Real Madrid with somewhat mixed feelings, having avoided defeat but given up a winning position after a 1-1 draw in the Round of 16 first leg.

While Madrid dominated possession for large spells and penned United back in their own half for the majority of the second period of the game, the away side defended resolutely, in numbers and with great organisation.

The same could not be said of Real Madrid.

More worryingly for Jose Mourinho and his team, this is a trend which has continued for quite some time, with Real looking rather shoddy at times for a side which is supposed to be challenging for the biggest honours in the game.

Nobody should doubt the immense quality that Real Madrid possess when in possession of the ball. On the expansive green of the Old Trafford pitch, you can bet that quality comes to the fore, as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel di Maria and Mesut Ozil will have more space in which to operate than they did tonight, with Phil Jones and Michael Carrick sat deep, almost on top of their own defenders.

But at the other end of the pitch, Real continue to look sluggish at times and downright disorganised at others, with a lack of communication and leadership.

Stand-in goalkeeper Diego Lopez, signed as cover after the injury to Iker Casillas, is understandably not yet in total command of his defence, but he has portrayed a worrying fallibility from set pieces in particular.

With Pepe still working his way back to fitness and Varane still inexperienced, it falls to Sergio Ramos to provide stability at the back—and though he is talented, aggressive and a real winner, he also remains impetuous, reactive and nonvocal at times.

Danny Welbeck's header off a routine corner exposed the limitations that the uncharacteristically un-Mourinho-like team has at present.

Though they will play a more progressive game from open play in the second leg, United could well find that their best route to goal at Old Trafford remains in set pieces with good movement inside the Real Madrid penalty box.

Babak II Madrid lebih banyak menekan. United sesekali berbahaya khususnya pas RvP nggak pas nendangnya jadi bola masih bisa disapu sebelum masuk gawang. Dibanding Madrid, United tampak miskin kreativitas buat nyerang.
