Sir Bobby Charlton has been presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Torch Trophy Trust.

The Manchester United legend, who is still a director at Old Trafford, has been recognised for his lifelong service to sport after joining the Reds back in 1953 and enjoying a glittering career at the highest level.

HRH The Princess Royal handed over the award at the Royal Army and Navy Club in London at a ceremony which also honoured Winter Olympian Lizzy Yarnold.

Sir Bobby has been president of the Torch Trophy Trust since 1999, the year of the club's famous Treble success, and is clearly a most worthy recipient of the award.

The Torch Trophy Trust is a charity that recognises and supports volunteers in sport and recreation. The annual awards are unique in celebrating the often thankless and unnoticed work of volunteers in sport.

Sir Bobby Charlton claims Manchester United are starting an exciting adventure to recovery under Louis van Gaal

Sir Bobby Charlton is adamant that Manchester United are at the start of an exciting and successful adventure under manager Louis van Gaal.

The club are without European football for the first time since 1982 and have failed to win any of van Gaal’s first four competitive matches in charge at United.

However club legend Charlton, a director at Old Trafford, believes the good times are set to return imminently under van Gaal.

‘It seems strange that Manchester United aren’t involved in European football for a season,’ said Charlton at Soccerex. ‘It’s crazy but maybe it can make things easier for us.’

‘We’ve started with some new players, we’ve not been playing well but we will play well. I think that it’s going to be a great adventure of how we pull ourselves back round and get back to the way it used to be.’

Van Gaal has claimed his side will take three months to play the style of football he requires and Charlton is defiant that the Dutchman’s arrival will reap success:

‘He has given me and most of us fans some good news. We won’t struggle, definitely we won’t struggle any more.

It’s just such a strange environment the way that it’s all happened, that Manchester United is out of the news but it won’t be for very long.'

Van Gaal and Charlton will hope that United can pick up their first win of the season this weekend, when they host Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Tepat pada 6 Oktober 1956, seorang pemain berusia 18 tahun dari akademi Manchester United menjalani hari bersejarah dalam kariernya. Pada laga debutnya itu, ia mencetak dua gol dan mengantarkan The Red Devils menang atas Charlton Athletic. Pemain itu adalah Sir Bobby Charlton.



Legenda sepak bola Inggris dan Man. United itu merupakan jebolan akademi The Red Devils. Ia merupakan salah satu pemain yang sukses bersama Man. United dan salah satu saksi hidup tragedi kecelakan pesawat di Muenchen, Jerman, pada 1958. Saat tragedi itu terjadi, Sir Bobby Charlton berusia 20 tahun.

Pemilik nama lengkap Robert Charlton ini lahir di Ashingtn, Northumberland, sebuah kota yang terletak di utara Newcastle. Ia memulai pendidikan sepak bola di tempat kelahirannya, East Northumberland Schools. Pada 1953 ia memutuskan untuk hijrah ke Manchester dan masuk ke akademi The Red Devils.



Ia mendapat kesempatan untuk menjalani debut saat Man. United menjamu Charlton Athletic di Old Trafford di liga yang saat itu masih dalam format Divisi Utama Liga Inggris. Sir Bobby Charlton menorehkan tinta emas di laga perdananya bersama Man. United dengan sumbangan dua gol dan kemenangan.

Pada musim perdananya di tim senior, Sir Bobby Charlton mencatatkan 10 gol dalam 14 penampilan bersama The Red Devils. Hebatnya, ia juga berhasil membawa Man. United finis di puncak klasemen dengan 64 poin dan mempersembahkan trofi liga di musim perdananya.



Secara keseluruhan, Sir Bobby Charlton berhasil membukukan 754 laga dan 247 gol untuk Man. United. Ia berhasil mempersembahkan beberapa trofi, tiga trofi Divisi Utama, Piala FA 1962/1963, empat trofi Charity Shield, dan European Cup 1967/1968.

Pada 1974 ia memutuskan hengkang dari Old Trafford dan bergabung ke Preston North End selama satu musim. Pada 1976 ia kemudian bergabung ke Waterford United sebelum memutuskan untuk gantung sepatu. Sir Bobby Charlton juga cemerlang bersama timnas Inggris dengan catatan 49 gol dalam 106 laga.



Prestasi tertingginya bersama timnas Inggris adalah saat berhasil mengangkat trofi Piala Dunia 1966. Saat itu Inggris menang 4-2 atas Jerman Barat setelah bermain selama 120 menit. Inggris merupakan tuan rumah turnamen bergengsi tersebut.

OLD TRAFFORD'S SOUTH STAND TO BE RENAMED SIR BOBBY CHARLTON STAND

- Naming comes 60 years after Sir Bobby made United debut
- Name will be unveiled at home match v Everton on 2 April

Old Trafford’s South Stand, which contains the only original part of the 1910 stadium infrastructure, is to be named after one of Manchester United and England’s greatest-ever players, United director Sir Bobby Charlton.

The unveiling of the new name will take place at the home game against Everton on 2 April 2016 in front of 75,000 fans and attended by key figures from Sir Bobby’s life and the world of football.

Sir Bobby joined United as an apprentice in 1953 and made his debut in October 1956. He went on to make 758 appearances for the club, scoring a record 249 goals.

Until recently, Sir Bobby also held the honour of having scored the most goals for England, with 49 in his 106 appearances, until United captain Wayne Rooney broke the record against Switzerland in September 2015.

Announcing the stand naming, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “Bobby is, quite simply, the most iconic figure in English football history. A player, a diplomat, a gentleman and a tireless worker for charity, he represents everything that is good about football and Manchester United.

“It has been a privilege to know him and humbling to work alongside him for the last 10 years. Renaming the South Stand, which contains both the Directors’ Box and the old players’ changing rooms, is a fitting tribute to all that Bobby has contributed to the club both as a player and a director.”

Sir Bobby said: “This is a great honour and I am very proud – for myself and my family – that the club has chosen to name the South Stand after me. Manchester United has been such an important part of my life and I have so many wonderful memories of this Theatre of Dreams. As a player, I remember the goals and the marvellous players I played with. As a director, I have seen some outstanding matches and players. It is a special place indeed.

“I would like to thank everyone connected with Manchester United. So many people work so hard to keep us at the top; their effort should never be forgotten. But most of all, I would like to thank Norma, my wonderful wife, and my family for the support and encouragement they have always provided. This is for them.”

Wah sangat setuju nih jika ada Sir Bobby Charlton stand karena kontribusinya yang begitu besar tidak hanya bagi United namun hjuga bagi sepakbola Inggris. Semoga saja beliau diberikan umur panjang sehingga bisa kembali mengunjungi Indonesia setelah sebelumnya pertengahan tahun 2000an saat peresmian MU Cafe yang kini sudah tutup..

Sangat pantas lah ya, Charlton salah 1 ikon klub ini sama Busby, menjadi bagian dari United selama 50 tahun lebih.
Apalagi mengingat pas dia berhasil selamat dari Tragedi Munich, ikut membangun tim dari awal, karena menurut gw bagian terpenting dalam sejarah United adalah apa yang terjadi & dibangun setelah kecelakaan tersebut, bisa bangkit dll, sampai sekarang Charlton menjabat sebagai club ambassador di jajaran pengurus United & ambil bagian dalam beberapa keputusan.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON'S DRESSING-ROOM IMPACT

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin has hailed Sir Bobby Charlton's impact inside the Old Trafford dressing room, ahead of the South Stand being renamed in the all-time record goalscorer's honour on Sunday.

Irwin made over 500 appearances during a 12-year spell with United, winning the Premier League seven times and the Champions League as part of the famous 1999 Treble team.

The former Republic of Ireland international was full of praise for Sir Bobby and credited the words of wisdom Charlton passes down to the players, helping to fuel the ambition during his time wearing the red shirt.

"It’s great to see a player of that standing coming into the dressing room after a game, and that was whether we won or lost," he told MUTV. "You particularly need to see people like that more when you lose, because you need that bit of encouragement.

"It’s not a happy place to be in a dressing room when you lose, and it’s always great when the likes of Sir Bobby comes in and has a little chat with you, as you know he’s got a fountain of knowledge, and the experience that he’s been through it all before, so I think everyone really appreciated that."

Irwin was unable to see Charlton play for Manchester United, but he highlights the achievements of Sir Bobby and the legendary team-mates the 78-year-old played with during his career with the Reds.

"Well I’m too young really to remember him playing for Manchester United," he added. "Obviously there aren’t that many clips around either of that era, unfortunately, but I know the amount of games he played for Manchester United, obviously being leading scorer and leading scorer of England with 49 until Wayne [Rooney] passed him recently.

"He was a World Cup winner for England, European Cup winner for Manchester United in 1968, best player in the world, I think, in 1965/66. He played in a great team with George Best and Denis Law, as well a very attacking side, so I think that speaks volumes for him playing wise."
