IT'S NOT FAIR! Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bemoans unfair schedule as Frank Lampard's Chelsea get two extra days to prepare for FA Cup semi-final

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says it is unfair Chelsea get more time before FA Cup semi
* United face Crystal Palace on Thursday while Chelsea have had five days rest
* Solskjaer is monitoring Paul Pogba's condition after his recovery from injury

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes it's unfair that Chelsea have 48 hours longer than Manchester United to prepare for Sunday's FA Cup semi-final.

United face Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on Thursday less than three days before the Wembley clash, while Chelsea will have had five days' rest from their win over Norwich on Tuesday.

Solskjaer claims that will give Frank Lampard's side an advantage as both clubs prepare for their ninth game in a month since the restart.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer complained ahead of FA Cup tie with Chelsea. Solskjaer claimed it is unfair that Chelsea get two more days to prepare for FA Cup semi-final

'It's not fair,' said the United boss. 'There is a concern obviously that they will have had 48 hours more rest and recovery than us.

'We spoke about a fair scheduling going into this restart and, of course, it isn't.

'Forty-eight hours is a big difference at this time (of the season) so we've not been handed four aces, to put it that way. We're going to have to put on a poker face and play the cards well.

'I have to think about Thursday, focus on winning that one and then pick up the pieces after that. The team selection is based on Thursday. Sunday is irrelevant.'

After naming the same line-up for the last five league games, Solskjaer must decide whether to risk Luke Shaw and Mason Greenwood who both sustained ankle injuries in Monday's draw with Southampton.

United will play Crystal Palace on Thursday night, three days before their FA Cup semi-final. United will also monitor Paul Pogba's condition over concerns he has played too much football

Greenwood is suffering the effects of a late challenge from midfielder Oriol Romeu that Solskjaer thought may have warranted a red card.

Brandon Williams should be available to replace Shaw if needed after having stitches in the facial wound that forced him to go off.

'Luke and Mason, their ankles are swollen and a bit blown up. I'll give them as much recovery time as possible to give them a chance,' added Solskjaer.

'Obviously Mason carried on and I think it should have been looked upon by the referee definitely. In the heat of the moment he played on and adrenaline gets you going, and then you get a little bit of reaction after.'

United will also monitor Paul Pogba's condition over concerns the Frenchman has been playing too much football after recovering from a long-term ankle injury.

Pogba, who has featured in all seven of United's games since the restart, was guilty of giving the ball away for Southampton's first goal after declaring himself fit to play.

'I've been speaking more or less every day with Paul,' said Solskjaer. 'He knows that he wouldn't be dropped. When Paul plays like this he wouldn't be dropped from any team in the world — France or Man United.

'But he's been out for a long, long time. There was a question mark before the game but he felt ready for it which was great. So now let's see how he is today or even tomorrow morning.'

Dropping two points in their quest for Champions League qualification was United's first real disappointment since returning to action after the lockdown and extending an 18-match unbeaten run.

They have three games left to reach the top four and Solskjaer said: 'A little bit of a setback is a test for our mentality. It almost always boils down to the last couple of weeks at Man United.'

SOLSKJAER'S VERDICT ON SEMI-FINAL DEFEAT

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tasted defeat for the first time since 2019/20 restarted, as Manchester United lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Wembley, and the manager will be making plans to ensure it will be the last, with two huge Premier League games on the horizon.

The Norwegian won the FA Cup as a player in 1999 but he'll have to wait a while longer to do the same as a coach, after seeing his side slip up in the semi-final on Sunday evening.

Here's what the boss had to say about the game, in his post-match interview and press conference...

THOUGHTS ON THE PERFORMANCE

“Of course, if you lose the game you’re very disappointed. We had the first half that we expected, two teams that knew each other really well. We waited a bit for each other, nothing really happened until the long layoff and their goal and of course that’s disappointing that we go into half-time 1-0 down. We tried to make a change, a positive change, but it didn’t work.”

MUST DO BETTER IN BIG GAMES

“You want to win everything and we're very disappointed in the dressing room, but we need to be better in these big games when it matters. We know that, we’ll have to take that into account, learn again and get ready for the next big ones. We’ve got two in five days coming up.”

BAILLY BLOW

“We hope Eric will be fine. He had a cut on his head. When he and Harry were down for a long time, it was a big moment. Obviously the long layoff was a big test and we didn’t pass it because we lost our concentration and conceded a goal just before half-time, which was disappointing. That had a massive impact on the game.”

MAGUIRE'S CONDITION

“Harry’s fine. He had a cut above the eye so he’ll be fine.”

TEAM SELECTION

“We picked a team today to give us a best possible opportunity to go through in the cup and be ready for Wednesday. It didn’t work today. We almost got to half-time and we had the change when Eric had to come off, but that will stand us in good stead for Wednesday. I picked a team today to go through.”

DE GEA'S DISPLAY

“Obviously everyone has to perform and everyone has a chance every time we play to stake a claim in the team. David knows he should have saved the second goal, but that’s done now. We’ve got to move on and look forward to Wednesday. It’s hard for a keeper to make amends apart from David making two or three fantastic saves after. It’s so much easier for outfield players but David, in the rest of the game, made a few good saves. But he knows he could have saved that one.”

PRAISE FOR WILLIAMS

“You saw Brandon [Williams] and the character he showed. He played a square pass into Mount [which led to their second goal] and he probably felt a bit responsible, but for the rest of the half he was absolutely outstanding. The kid has been out for a while and not played, and had the eye injury, but his character and personality out there was great, he kept going and kept going.”

LEARNING FROM DEFEAT

“What do we have to learn? We’ve got loads of things to learn as a team, but we are learning and we are developing. This team took a knock today confidence-wise, but let’s see how the reaction is on Wednesday.”

JAMIE REDKNAPP: Manchester United looked a shadow of the side we've enjoyed watching recently in FA Cup defeat after dropping Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba

* Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba were dropped for FA Cup
* Manchester United lost 3-1 to Chelsea in the semi-final with a poor performance
* If I could change it, I would make it so the winners of the FA Cup qualify for UCL

Manchester United rested Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba for their trip to Wembley and looked a shadow of the side we've enjoyed watching recently.

This is no dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — I understand why he did it and Chelsea played well. But it's a crying shame that finishing in the top four has become more important than winning the FA Cup.

If I could change one thing in football, it would be that the winners qualify for the Champions League.

Offering a ticket to join Europe's elite would revitalise the competition. It would bring back that magic and make it more like it was when I was a kid. You might ask: 'But what if a Championship side won it?'

Manchester United looked a shadow of the team we've seen after they dropped key players. This is no dig at Solskjaer – I understand why he did it. It's a shame he has to prioritise top four

Well, I say brilliant, let them have a go! Isn't that supposed to be the beauty of this competition? The chances of that would be small anyway because the big boys would take it seriously.

I love the FA Cup and hate how finishing fourth to satisfy money men is considered bigger.

Manchester United 1-3 Chelsea - PLAYER RATINGS: Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount shine in FA Cup semi-final but David De Gea and Harry Maguire disappoint for sloppy United

* Olivier Giroud has a knack for scoring in the FA Cup and done it again on Sunday
* Mason Mount threatened all game and deserved his goal early in the second half
* Man United were underwhelming and had few performances worth talking about

Chelsea have reached the FA Cup final after beating Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley Stadium.

Frank Lampard's men were the deserved winners in the end as United put in a sloppy performance contrasting to their form of late.

Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler gives his verdict on the displays of both sets of players.

Manchester United (3-4-1-2)

DAVID DE GEA - 4

Picked ahead of cup keeper Romero. Poor effort to save the first goal and an awful one for the second.

VICTOR LINDELOF - 6

Performed well on the whole but guilty of losing Giroud in build-up to the first goal

HARRY MAGUIRE - 5

Cut his head in collision with teammate Bailly and unfortunate to score an own-goal for Chelsea’s third.

ERIC BAILLY - 6

Brought in as part of back-three but went off before half-time after clashing heads with Zouma and Maguire.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA - 5.5

Poor distribution in the face of Chelsea press, and again looked vulnerable at his back post.

FRED - 5

Subbed by Pogba shortly after half-time after average display. The Frenchman should probably have started.

NEMANJA MATIC - 5.5

Had little influence and missed a chance to get United back in the game with late header.

BRANDON WILLIAMS - 5

First start since lockdown and looked rusty. Gave the ball away for Chelsea’s second goal.

BRUNO FERNANDES - 7

Injured three times in the first half but still United’s most creative player and then converted late penalty.

Bruno Fernandes did, however, provide Manchester United with a solid performance

DANIEL JAMES - 5

Came in for Mason Greenwood but struggled to have a significant impact on the game.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 5.5

Had an off day and wasted United’s best chance when he fired wide early in the second half.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER - 5

Made changes to the line-up and system but it backfired as United lost their fluency.

Substitutes: Pogba (for Fred 55, 6), Mata, Martial (for Bailly 45+2, 6.5), Pereira, Romero, Fosu-Mensah (for Wan-Bissaka 79, 6), Ighalo (for Rashford 79, 5.5), Greenwood (for James 56, 6), McTominay

Scorer: Fernandes pen 85

Booked: Pogba

Referee: Mike Dean - 7

Difficult stop-start game due to injuries but got the penalty decision right.

'I think Ole picked the wrong team and the wrong system': Club legend Phil Neville blasts Manchester United display and says Solskjaer made a big tactical error during abject FA Cup semi-final Chelsea loss

* Phil Neville has blasted Manchester United after 3-1 FA Cup defeat by Chelsea
* Neville said that boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got his tactics and line-up wrong
* The former United man also expressed his worry for David de Gea after blunder

Phil Neville blasted Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team selection after their 3-1 defeat by Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.

United, who were on a 19-match unbeaten streak before the match, struggled for creativity as Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount fired the Blues into a 2-0 lead before a Harry Maguire own goal sealed Chelsea's place in the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

Solskjaer made numerous changes to his line-up on Sunday with Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba notably dropped to the bench.

And Neville, who recently left his post as England women's manager, believes the Red Devils got their tactics wrong as they were out-played by Chelsea.

Phil Neville said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had his tactics and line-up wrong for the Wembley clash. Neville slammed Manchester United after their 3-1 defeat against Chelsea in FA Cup semi-final. Neville also warned of David de Gea's form after his blunder and said he is 'worried' for them

'I don't think United had a player on the pitch, maybe [Bruno] Fernandes, that played well,' the former Manchester United player explained.

'I think Ole picked the wrong team and the wrong system.'

United goalkeeper David de Gea came under more fire after a blunder early in the second half saw Chelsea extend their lead as the Spaniard failed to get a strong enough hand on Mason Mount's effort.

Speaking on the goalkeeper, who has been struggling lately, Neville said: 'He's unrecognisable from the player that won player of the year awards.

If I was Solskjaer I'd be worried. His credentials are still up there with the best in the world but he's lost all his confidence.'

Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole agreed with Neville, as he also said that de Gea's recent performances are cause for concern.

'De Gea keeps making the same mistakes, so that will be a concern.'

Manchester United still have a chance to reach the top four in the Premier League with two matches remaining against West Ham United and Leicester City.

The Europe League is now the club's only chance of silverware this season with Solskjaer's side facing LASK in the second leg of their R

'If that's Mourinho he's playing his strongest team': Paul Merson was 'flabbergasted' by Solskjaer's team selection, with Martial, Pogba AND Greenwood dropped for FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea

* Paul Merson was astonished at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team selection on Sunday
* Boss dropped Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood for semi-final
* Chelsea booked their place in FA Cup final against Arsenal following a 3-1 victory
* Sky Sports pundit compared Solskjaer with ex-United manager Jose Mourinho

Paul Merson was astonished at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team selection for Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea.

The Red Devils boss made the decision to drop Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood for the Wembley showdown on Sunday, which United lost 3-1.

Former Arsenal midfielder and now pundit Merson has expressed his surprise at Solskjaer rotating his side for the huge match, saying he was 'flabbergasted' by the United manager's choice with the possibility to win a trophy.

Paul Merson was astonished at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team selection for FA Cup semi-final. Manchester United boss dropped the in-form Anthony Martial for clash against Chelsea

United midfielder Paul Pogba was also dropped to the bench and came on as a substitute

Striker Mason Greenwood, who has been impressive recently, was also brought off bench

'It's clear that Man Utd's next two league games are more important than the FA Cup semi-final. More important than winning a trophy. I cannot catch my breath,' Merson said in his column for Sky Sports.

'Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to win something. If he wins the FA Cup it's massive for him. There are only a few trophies he can win in a season.

'I was flabbergasted at his team selection. I couldn't believe it.'

Merson said he was 'flabbergasted' by the United manager's choice to rotate his starting XI. The Sky Sports pundit compared Solskjaer with former United manager Jose Mourinho

Merson compared Solskjaer with former United manager Jose Mourinho and said that if the Tottenham boss was in still in the hotseat at Old Trafford he would have stuck to his strongest XI.

He added: 'If that's Jose Mourinho, he is playing his strongest team. You win trophies. You are judged on trophies!

'If Mourinho was in Man Utd's position yesterday, knowing he has Arsenal in the final, he plays his strongest possible team.'

The FA Cup defeat, in which goalkeeper David de Gea had a day to forget, brought an end to United's 19-game unbeaten run.

The United No 1 came in for criticism for his role in Chelsea's opener when he was beaten by a flick from Olivier Giroud just before half-time and was at fault for the Blues' second goal when he failed to deal with a hopeful effort from Mason Mount a minute after the restart.

Defender Harry Maguire scored an own goal for Chelsea's third before Bruno Fernandes scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot five minutes from time.

Chelsea will meet the Gunners in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, August 1. Both United and Chelsea have two games left to secure a Champions League qualification place in the Premier League.
