Default Re: [EPL] Rovers vs Man Utd

09/04/2010 07:52 - ManUtd, Frankie Theobalds
Match Pack: Blackburn

United can return to the top of the table with a win at Ewood Park on Sunday, but Blackburn would like nothing more than to thow a spanner in the works...

Form guide: Mid-table Blackburn’s home form has been the reason why they can look forward to top-flight football next term, having been stuck in the relegation quagmire for the first half of the campaign. A 2-1 win over Birmingham and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea are latest results in a seven-game unbeaten league run at Ewood Park this year. United will be determined to banish the hurt of Wednesday's European exit to Bayern Munich with a victory that would lift the Reds back to the top of the table, with Chelsea not in league action until midweek. United beat Blackburn 2-0 at Old Trafford in October and are unbeaten in eight matches with our north-west neighbours.

Ins and outs: Although Wayne Rooney was a surprise starter against Bayern, he was taken off after 55 minutes with an aggravation of his ankle injury, and Sir Alex's post-match quotes suggest he will not be back until the Manchester derby on April 17. John O’Shea came on for Wayne to end a five-month lay-off with a thigh problem. while the Reds' other absentees are Danny Welbeck (knee), Michael Owen (hamstring), Anderson (knee), Wes Brown (toe) and Owen Hargreaves (knee). Blackburn are waiting on late fitness tests for Keith Andrews (calf), Yildiray Basturk (hamstring) and Lars Jacobsen (groin), while Ryan Nelsen came through 90 minutes for the Reserves this week, having been out of the team since February with a knee injury.

Star man: Attacking midfielder David Dunn is Rovers' top scorer with nine goals this season. He’s back to full fitness after being plagued by an Achilles injury at the end of last season and the start of this one. Dunn was the toast of his hometown last month when he scored the winner against Burnley from the spot. It was his third goal in two games following a brace in the win over Birmingham.

Manager: After steering Bolton to promotion to the Premier League in 2001/02, Sam Allardyce has become one of the longest-serving managers in the top flight. A good friend of Sir Alex, 'Big Sam' left the Trotters in 2007, citing a desire to win silverware as his reason for moving on. A short, unsuccessful spell at Newcastle followed, before he took up the reins at Blackburn in December 2008. He has guided his side to the semi-finals of the Carling Cup this term, with his team now on 42 points, his target for the campaign is 50. “It would be a great finish to the season,” he says. “We've a lot to do to get there, given the difficulty of the games we have to play, but it is possible.”

Referee: This will be the fourth time that Peter Walton has taken charge of a United game this season. He’s officiated twice when United have faced Wolves – in the Carling Cup win in September, when he sent off Fabio, and March’s 1-0 league victory at Molineux. Walton was also in the middle for February’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, in which Nani received his marching orders, and the 4-0 triumph at West Ham in December.

Rivals watch: Chelsea face Villa in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday and their next league match is against Bolton on Tuesday. Third-placed Arsenal make the short trip to Spurs for Wednesday's north-London derby.

Big Sam: Fergie will get no favours from Blackburn

Sam Allardyce is fuming at suggestions that Blackburn will throw one in to help Manchester United’s title bid.

Rovers manager Allardyce joined his pal Sir Alex Ferguson at Aintree on Thursday to cheer the Reds boss’ horse What A Friend to victory.

But Allardyce said: “I take offence at the idea we will allow United to come here and have the points. There is no chance of that.

“The only favours I dish out are by beating other teams that are close to them. You always want to do well against United and not because I am friendly with Sir Alex but because it is a local derby.”

Bring on Manchester United, says Blackburn Rovers defender Samba
-lancashiretelegraph.co.uk-

CHRIS Samba will be gutted not to be facing Wayne Rooney at Ewood Park tomorrow – after warning ‘we can beat United with or without Roo’.

Manchester United’s talismanic striker is expected to miss the Premier League clash with an ankle injury to boost Blackburn Rovers’ hopes of picking up another Ewood scalp, but Samba insists he would prefer to play against the Champions’ very best.

Rovers have lost just three home games out of their last 27 during Sam Allardyce’s Rovers reign and stand-in skipper Samba insists ‘fortress Ewood’ will strike fear into any side’s hearts.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already ruled Rooney out of Sunday’s clash but, with the Scot no stranger to mind games, Rovers will be prepared for anything United have to throw at them.

Samba said: “There is no reason at Ewood Park why we can’t beat anyone. We believe it will take a lot to beat us at home. We have a good home record this season.

“There is a good atmosphere at the ground and that helps to push us on to have more strength. We are ready to play against the best.

“I will be disappointed if Rooney does not play. I don’t know about the others but I definitely feel like that. I want to test myself against the best. I don’t see the point in not wanting to challenge yourself.

“Having said that, although he is an important player they have other great players. They are a dangerous team with or without him.”

Samba’s central defensive partner remains unknown, with Sam Allardyce admitting he faces a selection dilemma between 18-year-old Phil Jones and the fit-again captain Ryan Nelsen.

In Nelsen’s absence, Samba has been wearing the armband with great aplomb but the giant defender insists he would have no problems in giving it up tomorrow.

He said: “Phil Jones has shown his quality and I am sure he has a good future. He is a talented lad, who keeps his head down and works hard and I am very happy for him.

“It has been good to captain the team and I have tried to do it the best I can. Ryan Nelsen will be hoping he comes back though and he has been a great leader for so long.

“Every time you play against the champions it is difficult.

"But we try to beat them every time. A couple of years ago they scored in the 90th minute to get a draw and that was their best team.”

Blackburn v Man United Preview: Ryan Nelsen Sounds a Warning Note
-football.fanhouse.co.uk-

BLACKBURN ROVERS:
Ryan Nelsen wants Manchester United to win the Premier League, but the Blackburn skipper has warned Sir Alex Ferguson's wounded side not to expect any favours at Ewood Park.

Nelsen could return to the side for the visit of United after missing the last six league matches due to a knee injury.

And although the New Zealand international defender is a huge admirer of United, Nelsen is determined to add to United's misery following their Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Blackburn are safely cushioned in mid-table but, with a home game against Arsenal on the penultimate weekend of the season, Sam Allardyce's side will have a big say where the title is heading.

"We can affect the final outcome of the Premier League title and that is really exciting when you can do that," said Nelsen.

"In all honesty I would like to see the Premier League stay up north. It is not like I am fan but I would like Manchester United to win it again just because of my northern allegiances. It is good for the area.

"Of course we won't do them any favours though. Our form at Ewood Park has been proven over the whole season though and that is partly due to the fantastic crowd behind us. Ewood has been a fortress for us and I'm sure United won't look forward to coming here."

Rovers manager Allardyce, who dented Chelsea's title charge last month, spent Thursday with United manager Ferguson at Aintree races.

Ferguson was offered some consolation from Wednesday night's European exit after his horse 'What A Friend' proved a winner, but Allardyce is determined not to hand his friend further cheer this weekend.

"Sunday is a very competitive local derby for us and all the lads are looking forward to the game," said Allardyce. "We did well against Chelsea a few weeks ago and we will be looking to do that again on Sunday."

Strategy: Beware the wounded animal. That will be Allardyce's message to his players before this game. But having enjoyed a decent season in front of their own fans, Blackburn will not be the opponents United had hoped for as they look to keep their title hopes alive. Nikola Kalinic has endured a stuttering start to his Ewood Park career, but this is the perfect stage for the Croatian forward to show he is worth every penny of the £6m Rovers shelled out for him last August.

Injury Update: Nelsen has been out since February with a knee injury but came through a midweek reserve game and could feature. Vince Grella also played in that game, but came off after a clash of knees. Keith Andrews (calf), Yildiray Basturk (hamstring) and Lars Jacobsen (groin) will undergo late fitness tests.

MANCHESTER UNITED:
Ferguson always insists he is confident that his players can bounce back from disappointment but the main frustration of the past week is that even a perfect finish to the campaign might not be enough.

Out of the Champions League and trailing Chelsea by two points, United can only win and hope.Victory at Ewood Park would take them a point above Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Ferguson will not accept that the title is Chelsea's to lose until he sees John Terry jumping up and down with the trophy but he has made little attempt to unsettle the Londoners in the way he has attempted to disrupt the likes of Newcastle, Blackburn and Arsenal in the past.

A record fourth straight title appears to be a distant dream now but Ferguson is confident his players can respond at Ewood Park. He said: "It's not the first time we've had to face losing a big game and having to do something about it. We've got five games left and they're five important games.

"Even if we win all of them it doesn't mean we can win the league, with the position Chelsea are in but they've got those games to play themselves and at this time of the season, things can happen.

"We've faced this situation many times over the years after the disappointment of Wednesday. It's part of the history of the club and we've been good at that.

"That's the thing the players need to be reminded of, they've done it in the past many times because they, as Manchester United players, always have to face the responsibility and expectation.

"They have a chance to win the league and so have Arsenal who are a point behind us but you'd rather be in Chelsea's position, two points in the lead with five games left. We hope that something can happen. Five wins would give us a good chance but I think Chelsea will be thinking the same thing and five wins gets them the title."

Strategy: With no Wayne Rooney once again, Ferguson will be wondering whether to go with Dimitar Berbatov as a lone striker. He has acknowledged that is his preferred system and, although he backed the Bulgarian, he also intimated that it does not suit the former Tottenham man.

If he does go with Berbatov, he will either have to play another forward, Federico Macheda or Mame Biram Diouf, or put a midfielder in position to get beyond the lone striker.

Blackburn have lost just twice at home all season and Ferguson knows exactly what to expect from the team of his old friend Allardyce, meaning that the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will be crucial.

He has also claimed that bringing back the experience of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville could be crucial at Ewood Park. "Blackburn are Blackburn," he said. "Sam's got the best out of his players and that's what good managers do.

"They're 11th in the league, their form has been good, some of their recent form has been very good. It's never easy going to Blackburn and it won't be on Sunday."

Injury Update: Rooney is absent with his ankle problem and Wes Brown is still out with a foot injury, while Michael Owen, Anderson and Danny Welbeck are long-term absentees.

Salgado warns Man Utd of major Blackburn test
-tribalfootball.com-

Despite having nothing to play for, Michel Salgado says Blackburn Rovers will go at Manchester United full throttle.

United trail title leaders Chelsea by two points and visit Rovers knowing anything but a win will leave their season in tatters.

Former Spain international Salgado, 34, told The Sun: "This is a massive game for everyone at this club and it would be great to beat United at home in front of our own fans.

"I have beaten United in a Madrid shirt but now I need to beat them in the shirt of Blackburn - that would be perfect for me.

"I've always felt that in 2000, even though we won the Champions League in Paris, it was at United we really won it."

Jelang Blackburn vs MU
Rooney Absen, Allardyce Lega
Kris Fathoni W - detiksport

United Wajib Sapu Bersih!
Okezone
