Five great Manchester United vs Tottenham matches - the fixture that’s always full of goals
The game of the weekend that's not to be missed

goal

In what is arguably the game of the weekend, Manchester United - unbeaten in the Premier League thus far - welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford, in the evening kick-off on Saturday.

Matches between these sides have mustered some of the most exciting games in Premier League history, from incredible comebacks to last-minute equalisers, to thumping victories - this is a contest which has rarely disappointed.

Goal.com UK looks back at the most gripping clashes between the two sides...

TOTTENHAM 4-1 MANCHESTER UNITED - January 1, 1996

Premier League title-chasing United were given a New Year's Day to forget after they were thumped by a Chris Armstrong-inspired Spurs.

Armstrong ran Ferguson's side ragged in the most impressive performance of his career. Future United player Teddy Sheringham opened the scoring before Andy Cole equalised a minute later.

Sol Campbell put Spurs back ahead, before a brace from the former Crystal Palace man ensured Alex Ferguson (in the days before he was a knight) and his team travelled back up north with their tails between their legs.

TOTTENHAM 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED - February 2, 2008

Carlos Tevez's last-minute equaliser put the dampener on a dominant Spurs display.

The hosts were the better team for all of the contest except stoppage time, when the Argentine bundled home a corner. United had looked clueless before that moment and fell behind to a close-range strike from Dimitar Berbatov, who would become United's club record signing the following summer.

With Chelsea and Arsenal right behind them in the title race, Tevez's goal ensured a valuable point went United's way.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 TOTTENHAM - May 16, 1999

Andy Cole's delicate lob kept United's treble dream alive as his strike sealed the Premier League title.

With Arsenal in hot pursuit, Ferguson's side needed to beat Spurs in the last league game of the season to finish top. After falling behind to a Les Ferdinand goal, United struck back before half-time through David Beckham.

In no mood to see the trophy end up with the Gunners, Cole's expert finish over Ian Walker's head began the most dramatic 10 days in the club's history, which would also bring FA Cup and Champions League glory.

MANCHESTER UNITED 5-2 TOTTENHAM - April 25, 2009

A neck-and-neck Premier League title race swung in United's favour after some suspect refereeing saw them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Harry Redknapp's side grabbed a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford after some shaky defending let in Darren Bent and Luka Modric. With Liverpool close behind them in the table, it took an incorrect penalty call from Howard Webb to spark United in to life.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on hand to score the equaliser and celebrated the third by tearing his shirt off to send a message to Rafa Benitez that the trophy was staying in Manchester. Wayne Rooney and Berbatov, now sporting the red of United, completed the sensational turnaround.

TOTTENHAM 3-5 MANCHESTER UNITED - September 29, 2001

Arguably one of the most thrilling Premier League game of the decade saw United race back from 3-0 down at half-time to clinch the win.

Spurs debutant Dean Richards opened the scoring with a header from a corner as the hosts dominated proceedings. Gustavo Poyet then pulled the strings to expert effect to set-up Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege.

Sir Alex Ferguson's hair dryer was at its most powerful at half-time to inspire his players to score five unanswered goals. New boy Juan Sebastian Veron drilled in the fourth before a fabulous team move saw David Beckham strike the fifth.

----------------

sepertinya selisih golnya tipis nih..2-1 or 1-0 ..merindukan banget UNITED bisa menang dengan skor skor yg mencolok..#hope

Ada yang menarik dari pertemuan kedua tim..yaitu BERBA, VDV, BALE ketiganya Hotspur connection..BERBA from hotspur yg sudah bersama UNITED, VDV adalah salah satu nama yg sempat di gosipkan akan berbaju UNITED sebelum BEBE in tapi gabung ke hotspur...dan BALE will he as our next player ?..seperti yg di beritakan oleh goal.com berikut ini

Quote:
Berbatov, Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale: The transfer battles won, lost and still to be fought between Manchester United and Tottenham
The one who signed, the one that got away - and the one yet to happen?

It would only be a slight exaggeration to suggest that Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur seem to meet across either side of a boardroom table as often as they do at either end of a football pitch.

Picking up points might be the aim of both sides when they meet in the league or cup (or, later in the season, the Champions League?), but when it comes to buying and selling players it seems to be the north Londoners that are the only ones piling on the pounds.

In recent times, whether coincidence or part of a plan, Sir Alex Ferguson has regularly looked to Spurs for the multi-million pound signings he hoped would provide his side with the push to keep their challenge going at home and abroad. Michael Carrick was the first, coming in at the princely sum of £18 million in 2006, after a spell at Spurs where he proved himself as one of the most inventive and consistent midfield playmakers in England.

While Spurs were disappointed to lose their then-talisman, the blow was softened by the knowledge they had turned an inexpensive £2.75m signing from West Ham in 2004 into a near-£15m profit just under two years later.

And then, in a twist of fate, that money was spun into the £10.9m of a certain Dimitar Berbatov. The Hungarian arrived on these shores with a reputation as a talent untested at the top level after glimpses of quality at Bayer Leverkusen, but after a couple of seasons with goals and technique on frequent display, it was not a surprise that Manchester United once again came calling.

They may have got the Hungarian — although only after surprise competition from Manchester City and traditionally hard-bargaining from Spurs — but it was the Londoners who made arguably the scoop of the summer two years later when they landed Rafael van der Vaart, a former United target. The £8m Dutchman came at a price even the austere United of recent times could happily have afforded, but it is Spurs reaping the benefits of their transfer nous.

But with Gareth Bale performing at such a high level — and with United's interest in him already well known — will the two clubs once again be around a boardroom table come next summer?

Goal.com UK takes a look that the past, near present — and future? — of negotiations between the two sides, and how the three key faces could have a major impact on Saturday's game:

THE ONE THEY GOT

Dimitar Berbatov
£30m
September 2008

The Bulgarian divides opinion like no-one else — or at least he did until that memorable hat-trick against Liverpool at Old Trafford earlier this season.

But it's notable that it took Berbatov more than two years to reach that stage. In the mean time he had his backers, but many that believed he was a work-shy show pony whose tricks (never mind his shooting) rarely had an end product.

But perhaps that is the changing standards that come with being at an elite club, as Berbatov's strike record at Old Trafford has only slightly dropped as a starter from his record at White Hart Lane, with the greater number of substitute appearances dropping his goals per game average. Interestingly, although it is very early in the season it seems he may be hitting his former level (or surpassing it) as he begins to be relied upon more frequently:

2006/2007
Spurs
44 starts (6 as sub), 23 goals (15 assists), 0, 46 goal / game

2007/2008
Spurs
42 starts (4 as sub), 22 goals (13 assists), 0, 48 goal / game

2008/2009
Man Utd
36 starts (8 as sub), 14 goals (9 assists), 0,32 goal / game

2009/2010
Man Utd
29 starts (14 as sub), 12 goals (6 assists), 0,28 goal / game

2010/2011
Man Utd
9 starts (2 as sub), 6 goals (2 assists), 0, 55 goal / game

Nevertheless, at the time of writing Spurs will feel the £20m profit they made on Berbatov (the proceeds of which went on the likes of Luka Modric and the core of the squad that would eventually qualify for the Champions League last season) makes them the big winners of the deal.

But Manchester United might feel the 29-year-old has finally found his feet and form at Old Trafford, and a goal against his former club at the weekend could go a long way to swinging the balance back in the favour of United.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Rafael van der Vaart
£8m (from Real Madrid)
September 2010

This summer, Sir Alex Ferguson spent (roughly) £7.4m on a player he'd never seen in action, Bebe. Meanwhile, down south, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and his manager were working on a surprise £8m deadline-day deal to bring Rafael van der Vaart to the club.

United were linked with Van der Vaart as recently as June, but it was Spurs who were on the ball when Real Madrid eventually made the World Cup finalist available. Will United live to regret letting him slip through their (very affordable) grasp?

So far, the evidence suggests they might. Van der Vaart has been nothing short of a revelation to date, scoring five goals in just eight appearances for his new side. Bebe, meanwhile, has had to endure suggestions that he was nowhere near the standard expected of a United youngster upon his arrival at the club's Carrington training base, though he did score his first goal for the club this week, albeit via a generous deflection, against Wolves in the League Cup.

Time is on Bebe's side, but the impact so far has been all Van der Vaart. And with Wayne Rooney's recent high-profile spat with the club reportedly centred on United's failure to keep signing star players, Van der Vaart would certainly have fitted that bill.

Now, however, it is Spurs who will continue to benefit from their cut-price star — a starring impact against United on Saturday could just be his latest contribution.

THE ONE THEY MIGHT YET GET?

Gareth Bale
Price TBC
Summer 2011?

Spurs fans must be used to the links by now, so will probably not have fallen down in shock when Goal.com UK exclusively revealed United's summer interest in Gareth Bale.

It is an interest that is unlikely to go away before next summer, especially in light of recent performances. The Welsh left wing-back (for want of a better description) has been scintillating all season, with his hat-trick against Inter at San Siro last week having the inescapable feeling of his coming out party on the world stage.

But can United afford such a player these days? Wayne Rooney might fear they can't, but his recent outburst seems to have forced the Glazers into releasing up to £50m into the transfer kitty — surely enough to persuade Spurs into negotiations. The club drive a hard-bargain, however, and ever decent performance against elite opposition will only raise his price tag further.

A superstar in his own right now, United will surely be watching Bale closely for more than one reason come the weekend's game. Ferguson and his coaches will be attempting to work out ways to stop the young tyro, while David Gill and his team might be considering financial packages they could offer the 21-year-old.

Levy, should he attend, might be wise to avoid his opposite number throughout the day. Regardless of the result, it is hard to believe the availability of Bale won't be one topic of discussion United will be particularly keen to raise.

Modric: Old Trafford is the best stage to play football
Author: Ben Moss | Sport.co.uk

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric claims their recent performance against Inter Milan in the Champions League has given Harry Redknapp’s side the confidence to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Tottenham head to Old Trafford this weekend without an away win against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side since December 1989, but the diminutive Croatian believes the North London Premier League club’s form in Europe offers plenty of encouragement heading to a stadium the midfielder describes as the “best”.

Despite losing the game 4-3 at the San Siro, Modric believes Spurs’ spirited comeback in the second-half illustrates their ability to compete at the very highest level.

When asked if Tottenham can end their Old Trafford hoodoo, Modric told the club's official website: "We're ready, why not?

"We showed against Inter in the second half that we can compete with the best teams in the world and United is certainly one of the best teams in the world.

"But why not go there and try to win? I know Tottenham haven't won at Old Trafford for a long time, so why not now?

Intriguingly the 25-year-old has been perpetually linked with a move to Manchester United since arriving in English football in 2008, and the player admits Old Trafford is a wonderful stage to play football.

He concluded: "It's the best stage to play, the best stadium and it will be a great game for us. I hope we can do something there."

Musim lalu saya melihat DM UNITED ( fletch, Carrick ) punya kemampuan yg luar biasa dalam memotong passing lawan, sehingga lawan menjadi susah masuk kedalam pertahanan UNITED. Tapi musim ini seakan semua sirnah
