Setelah Pique, kini legenda arsenal Martin Keown yg memuji duet Rio-Vida....

Arsenal legend praises "a masterstroke from Sir Alex Ferguson"

If Manchester United maintain their unbeaten Premier League run until the end of the season, Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes it will be founded on the superb form of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

The former England international, who was part of ‘the Invincibles’ Arsenal side in 2003-2004 season, believes Sir Alex Ferguson has masterminded a competitive streak between the two aforementioned Old Trafford stalwarts which is benefiting the Red Devils immensely. Keown believes Ferguson’s decision to install Vidic as his club captain has “put Rio's nose out of joint”, and the England skipper is subsequently even eager to impress and prove his manager wrong.

Ferdinand and Vidic have been immense in a side that for all their good results have at times flattered to deceive this season. Keown believes the duo complement each other's games perfectly, with the more robust Vidic marrying well with the languid but equally resolute Ferdinand.

The Arsenal hero told the Daily Mail: “Manchester United can go unbeaten all season - and that is largely because of the excellent form of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

“They have both been brilliant and their feeling of supremacy will start to grow and make them even better.

“You need to be lucky too and Ferdinand and Vidic are having a spell without injury which they didn't enjoy last season.

“They have already played together 14 times this season, four more than the whole of last season.

“Not making Ferdinand captain and instead choosing Vidic is looking like a masterstroke from Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It put Rio's nose out of joint. So now he is making a point to the manager every time he puts in a great performance.

“Ferguson barely ever praises Ferdinand but is always saying nice things about Vidic. That will annoy Rio but his boss is the one benefiting.

“Rio is not flying forward any more like he did earlier in his career and has admitted he now prefers 'fighting fires'.

“He gets a lot of pleasure from his defensive blocks and headers while before he sometimes wanted to show too much trickery. The injuries he has had mean he has to manage his energy better, which means he is taking fewer risks.

“I also noticed in United's last outing at Tottenham that Rio is demanding more from his team-mates than ever before, shouting at the people around him.

“I see a real hunger in his eyes now that he is not in his comfort zone any more - he needs to show Ferguson that he may not be captain, but he is still the best.

“Vidic does all the important things well. He heads the ball, attacks it and there are no questions over his positional sense. You would be amazed at the number of defenders who don't do those things.

“They have different approaches to fouling: Rio has barely committed one all season but Vidic walks a fine line sometimes.

“You saw him pulling Rafael van der Vaart's shirt in the box last week but he was careful that he did it from an angle that the referee couldn't see. He is clever and will do anything to help his team.

“In any partnership, you respect one another but you want to be top dog. It was like that with myself and Tony Adams.

“Vidic is the captain but Rio will think he is top dog. As a result of that, United benefit. Ferguson's ploy has got the best out of Vidic too.”

Exclusive - Allardyce: 'Man United will find life difficult without Ferdinand and Vidic'

TalkSport

Sam Allardyce has told talkSPORT Manchester United are facing a defensive crisis as they prepare to take on Liverpool this weekend.

Following defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night, United now lead Arsenal by four points, but the Gunners have a game in hand.

And victory for Arsenal at home to Sunderland on Saturday will put pressure on the leaders to get a result at Anfield on Sunday lunchtime.

But they will have to do it without their first choice central defensive partnership, with Rio Ferdinand injured and Nemanja Vidic banned following his red card at Stamford Bridge.

And Allardyce admits that could cause them real problems.

He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic it makes life very difficult for Manchester United, even though Chris Smalling is doing well.

“Who will play there now – Wes Brown or John O’Shea? One of the problems United have had so far is changing the back four so much this year and that’s why the title is still not settled yet.”

Former Bolton and Blackburn boss Allardyce also feels Sir Alex Ferguson had cause for complaint following United’s 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, with Vidic seeing red for two yellows, but Blues defender David Luiz escaping similar punishment.

United were also unhappy with the award of the penalty that resulted in Frank Lampard’s winning goal, when Yuri Zhirkov appeared to tumble over Smalling’s leg.

Allardyce added: “The big problem for Sir Alex is he’s seen one of his opponents not sent off, and then one of his has been. Has the ref got it wrong twice? These decisions don’t equal themselves out and this is why there is so much call for video technology.

“In terms of persistent fouling by Luiz, nine times out of ten he would have got a second yellow card.

“And the penalty was a soft one that on many occasions wouldn’t have been given.”

Kekuatan United selama 5 tahun terakhir adl kuatnya tembok pertahanan yg digalang oleh Rio-Vidic . Pasti bakal menemui beberapa kendala ketika mereka berdua absen scr temporer , tapi United bukan tim kacangan . Permainan kolektif United tetap terjaga , walau bukan duet utama yg tampil

PHIL JONES & CHRIS SMALLING NEW GARY PALLISTER & STEVE BRUCE

Pallister sees the arrival of Phil Jones, 19, to play alongside Chris Smalling, 21, as the future of the club

19th June 2011
By Tony Stenson

MANCHESTER United legend Gary Pallister believes Sir Alex Ferguson has found the new Dolly and Daisy.

That was the name Fergie gave to Pally and central defensive partner Steve Bruce as the club stormed to a string of cups and league titles in the 1990s.

Now Pallister sees the arrival of former Blackburn Rovers man Phil Jones, 19, to play alongside Chris Smalling, 21, as the future of the club – although first they’ll have to dump Rio Ferdinand and current skipper Nemanja Vidic out of the team.

Laughing as he recalled his old *nickname, Pally told the Daily Star Sunday: “I was Dolly, Steve was Daisy. What would Sir Alex call Phil and Chris?

“One thing I do know is that Sir Alex usually finds a new name for players he likes and knows will eventually do a good job for the club.”

Kent-born Pallister, 45, was a hero at Boro until he moved to United for £2.3million in 1989, a British transfer record for a defender at the time, as well as being the highest fee between British clubs and the second-highest fee to be paid by a British club – one behind Ian Rush’s return to Liverpool from Juventus a year earlier.

Pallister has already been impressed by ex-Fulham defender Smalling but warns that whatever £16million Jones has achieved so far in his time at Ewood Park, it will be a far different experience going into the United dressing room.

Former England star Pallister said: “He will learn it is a whole new ball game at United.

“We are talking about one of the biggest clubs in the world, revered around the world in the same way as The Beatles.

“The expectations are so high at Old Trafford, higher than most clubs – and, of course, United are steeped in history with all that has happened to the club over the years.”

Life is certainly demanding and tough as a Red Devil and Pallister warned: “If you have a weak temperament the club and players will find you out.

“You have to live with all the expectation 24/7.

“On my first day in the dressing room I saw Mark Hughes, Bryan Robson and Brian McClair and suddenly you are with legends. That is when I realised just how big the club is.

“Back then, in 1989, United hadn’t won the title for twenty-odd years. It was like a Holy Grail and when one title came along, bang, the floodgates opened.”

Pallister and Bruce were central to United’s early success under Sir Alex, the pair forming a central defensive rock from 1989 to 1996 when Brucie left for Birmingham City.

And Pally can see big things ahead for Jones and Smalling, not forgetting Jonny Evans, 23, who is already established in the United first-team squad.

“Smalling looks like a level- headed lad,” said Pallister, “and he has something worth *nuturing.

“Phil Jones is the same. And both have access at United to something I never had. Now behind the scenes there are people who know the club inside out, ready to pass on all their knowledge.

“There is Brian McClair, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Mike Phelan, plus the gaffer. They will be a huge help.

“Sir Alex is spending and knows that Rio and Nemanja can’t go on forever. But now they have Evans, Smalling and Jones as the future."
