Preview: Southampton v United


Scene-setter: Following a hard-fought victory over Stoke on Tuesday evening, the Reds travel to third-placed Southampton, where a win would see Louis van Gaal's side leapfrog the Saints, ahead of a tasty clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday 14 December.

Form guide: The Reds will be full of confidence heading into the match, having picked up maximum points from the previous four Premier League games. Southampton could provide a tough test, though - Ronald Koeman's side boast the division's meanest defence, having shipped just ten goals this campaign. The Saints' momentum has slowed after back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Arsenal, but the hosts will be determined to return to winning ways on home soil.

Team news: Reds captain Wayne Rooney will return to the side having recovered from the knee injury he picked up against Hull. Angel Di Maria will not feature after being forced off with a hamstring strain during that win at Old Trafford. Luke Shaw will miss out against his former club, while Daley Blind and Phil Jones are still returning to full fitness. Jones is back in training but not ready for first-team action. Southampton could be without key defender Toby Alderweireld, while Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork are expected to miss the game.

Quote/unquote: Van Gaal: "I want to wait until after the match [to assess things], but we’re in a very good moment. We've won four matches in a row, which is a very good achievement in the Premier League. I want to see what happens against Southampton – if we win a second consecutive away game, we'll have great momentum."

Last match: The Reds fought back to claim a point at St Mary's on the final day of last season, as a sublime free-kick from Juan Mata on 54 minutes cancelled out Rickie Lambert's first-half opener. Young Optimis MU Menang di Kandang Southampton

Bola.net - Winger Manchester United, Ashley Young mengaku optimis timnya mampu menang saat menghadapi tuan rumah Southampton pekan ini. Skuat The Red Devils dijadwalkan bertamu ke St. Mary's Stadium untuk menghadapi tuan rumah The Saints pada hari Senin waktu setempat (08/12).

Meski mengakui bahwa Southampton bukan lawan enteng, namun Young yakin bahwa timnya punya modal yang cukup untuk meraih tiga poin. MU tengah berada dalam tren positif dengan meraih empat kemenangan beruntun, sementara Soton gagal menang dalam tiga laga terakhir mereka.

"Laga melawan Southampton bermakna penting, dan jelas bukan pertandingan mudah. Mereka memulai musim dengan sangat baik dan kini berada di posisi ketiga klasemen, kami tahu bahwa akan cukup sulit menghadapi mereka," ungkap Young seperti dilansir situs resmi klub.

"Namun jika kami pergi ke sana dan mampu menampilkan performa yang sama dengan empat pertandingan terakhir, saya yakin kami akan mampu mengamankan tiga poin."

Southampton v Man Utd: Van Gaal boosted Rooney return


Ronald Koeman feels his Southampton side could be classed as favourites going into Monday's Barclays Premier Leauge match with Manchester United.

The two sides are separated by just a point in the Barclays Premier League, although Koeman's side have lost their last two matches against Manchester City and Arsenal. Two of Southampton's four league defeats have come in the past week and United would leapfrog Monday's opponents with a win.

Koeman, who is without Jack Cork (ankle), Morgan Schneiderlin (groin) and James Ward-Prowse (ankle), warned that Louis van Gaal's men should not expect an easy ride, suggesting United may not be considered favourites as has been the case in previous seasons. The former Feyenoord coach also dismissed suggestions there would be any ill-feeling between himself and Van Gaal despite disagreements during their time at Ajax.

"If we [Koeman and Van Gaal] see each other we shake hands,” Koeman said. “He's a great coach, it was difficult at the start but they are on the way back.

"They have shown that in the performances of the team and have won the last four games, it's a nice challenge for us. Normally, if Southampton play Manchester United, Manchester United is the favourite, but they know it will be a tough game.

"Our performance against Arsenal was a good one, much better than the [Manchester] City game, but in the Premier League, there isn't an easy game to win."

While Southampton come into Monday's meeting after back-to-back defeats, United will target five Barclays Premier League wins in a row and aided by the return of captain Wayne Rooney. The striker missed the midweek home win over Stoke City with a knock to the knee suffered in the win over Hull City last weekend, but has been passed fit to return.

Van Gaal, who can also call on defender Jonny Evans again after he recovered from a foot injury, is not paying too much attention to Southampton's lofty position at this stage of the campaign.

"It's the same in every country,” he said. “Every country always has at the beginning of the season a surprise.

"Zwolle, a club in the Netherlands, was leading the competition in the Dutch league for six or eight matches. It's always like that.

"But as I have said, what always matters is the end of May. That counts. Now it's not so important. They have a very good squad. I know a lot of [Southampton's] players and a lot of players were offered to us."
