Manchester United 'could sell David De Gea to raise funds for the summer transfer window'.

The Spanish keeper, 29, has struggled to return to form after a shocking first few months of the season and this campaign has been way off his best.

He would be happy to return to La Liga, but a move to Juventus or PSG looks more likely according to Goal.

His contract at Old Trafford was extended in September to 2023 after the club feared losing him for free.

The Red Devils are keeping a close eye on Dean Henderson - on loan at Sheffield United - who has helped the Blades to 7th in the league.

The 22-year-old has the South Yorkshire side dreaming of European football and has been pipped as a future England star.

United also have Sergio Romero, who is considered by some as the best reserve keeper in the league.

It comes as the club continues to 'suffer' while they remains in Champions League exile.

The cost of this has been highlighted this week as the latest financial figures confirmed a drop in revenue that could total £70million for the year.

It is largely due to United's absence from the Champions League and Solskjaer is hoping to qualify next season either through the Premier League or Europa League.

United face Club Bruges in the second leg of their last-32 tie at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Manchester United are concerned by David De Gea's blunders with his position under scrutiny for the first time - as they plan talks with Sheffield United loanee Dean Henderson over his future this month

* Manchester United may consider replacing David de Gea over the summer
* De Gea's mistakes have cost United seven goals since the start of last season
* United are set to meet with Dean Henderson's representatives this month

David De Gea’s position as Manchester United’s undisputed No 1 could come under scrutiny for the first time this summer.

De Gea has been an automatic starter in goal for United since moving to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011 — racking up 393 appearances.

But a series of errors, culminating in Sunday’s blunder at Everton that gifted Dominic Calvert-Lewin a goal in the 1-1 draw, have raised questions about the 29-year-old Spaniard.

Manchester United are likely to consider replacing goalkeeper David de Gea this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has consistently selected the Spaniard during his Old Trafford tenure

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world when it was pointed out his mistakes had cost United seven goals since the start of last season, there are concerns at the club over his levels of performance and concentration.

Solskjaer kept faith in De Gea during a difficult spell a year ago and still hopes the keeper can play his way back into form. If the mistakes continue, however, the manager could face a difficult decision in the summer.

United will assess their goalkeeping situation over the next few months and are due to hold talks with Dean Henderson’s representatives before the end of March.

Henderson has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League while on loan from Old Trafford to Sheffield United this season — helping the promoted club into contention for a European place.

England Under 21 star Henderson, who may well be given an improved contract by United to ward off interest from clubs around Europe, has ambitions to be first choice at Old Trafford and is now seen as a genuine threat to De Gea.

The 22-year-old is likely to be sent out on loan for a third season, possibly at Sheffield United again, unless De Gea’s situation changes. The Spaniard’s place has been unchallenged during his nine-year career at United.

United are set to meet with Dean Henderson's representatives before the end of March

Current No 2 Sergio Romero is set to play in Thursday’s FA Cup tie at Derby, but the Argentine is happy with his role, while 37-year-old Lee Grant is out following wrist surgery and Joel Pereira is on loan at Hearts.

If United ever decide to sell De Gea, one major hurdle would be the long-term deal paying him £375,000 a week that he signed in September. That limits the number of clubs who could afford him.

England manager Gareth Southgate is keen to hand Henderson his international debut before Euro 2020.

Southgate wants to give the keeper, who is likely to be third choice behind Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope, experience behind England’s back line before the European Championship.

Are you sure, Ole? Solskjaer says David de Gea is STILL 'the best goalkeeper in the world' after Roy Keane slammed 'overrated' stopper's error at Tottenham... but even the Man United boss admits Dean Henderson will usurp him one day

* David de Gea was at fault for goal Manchester United conceded at Tottenham
* The goalkeeper allowed Steven Bergwijn's shot past him during Friday's 1-1 draw
* But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still feels De Gea is the 'best goalkeeper in the world'
* United host Sheffield United on Wednesday in their next Premier League fixture
* Solskjaer says Dean Henderson - on loan at Blades - will one day be United No 1
* It came after former United captain Roy Keane laid into De Gea on Friday night

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he wouldn't swap David de Gea for any goalkeeper in the world despite tipping Dean Henderson to be a future No 1 for Manchester United and England.

Solskjaer threw his support behind under-fire De Gea ahead of Wednesday's home game against Sheffield United — a fixture that Henderson will miss because he is on loan from Old Trafford.

The message was clear: De Gea remains first choice and Henderson's challenge, in the long term, is to depose him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sprung to the defence of his goalkeeper David de Gea after he made an error in Friday night's 1-1 draw at Tottenham which drew criticism from former players. De Gea has come under scrutiny after another mistake in United's draw with Tottenham

Roy Keane turned his ire on Man United keeper De Gea after his mistake on Friday night. De Gea allowed Steven Bergwijn's shot to go past him for Tottenham's opener on Friday night

'David has been fantastic at the club, he is still developing and still getting better and better,' said Solskjaer in response to criticism of De Gea's display in the 1-1 draw at Spurs on Friday night. 'He's still winning games for us with his saves but he's always going to be under criticism because it's Manchester United.'

After the game on Sky Sports, former United man Roy Keane said 'I'd be fighting him at half-time… I would be swinging punches at that guy' and added De Gea was 'the most over-rated goalkeeper for a long, long time' after the Spaniard allowed Bergwijn's shot past him.

'He's conceded two goals in the last seven games but every goal he concedes it's like, "Well, he's finished". Of course he isn't,' said Solskjaer. 'For me, he's still the best goalkeeper in the world and I wouldn't swap him with anyone.

'Dean has had a fantastic couple of years at Sheffield United and I think eventually he will end up as England No 1 and Manchester United No 1.

Dean Henderson, currently on loan at Sheffield United, is tipped to go and succeed De Gea

'But he's got the best goalkeeper in the world to tip off his place.'

The manager's comments highlight the dilemma facing him this summer: how do you keep Henderson happy if De Gea is still No 1?

The 23-year-old's camp will seek talks with United at the end of the season over a new contract that reflects his progress.

Henderson only signed a new deal last summer worth around £35,000-a-week that still has two years to run — with the option of another 12 months — but De Gea, 29, earns more than 10 times that on £375,000-a-week.

Henderson's representatives will seek improved terms of up to £100,000-a-week after establishing himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League.

United acknowledge that Henderson needs to play but are reluctant to loan him to a top-six rival amid interest from Chelsea.

Sheffield United would like to keep him for a third year, having agreed an extension to his loan for the remainder of this campaign.

The former Man United captain said he'd be 'swinging punches' at De Gea after his mistake

But Henderson is ambitious to play at a higher level — even though the Blades will leapfrog United if they win on Wednesday evening.

'We're going to have to make a decision because Dean obviously needs games. We'll sit down with him,' added Solskjaer.

'He's learning all the time. Of course, that's an option for him to stay at Sheffield United.

'But it's a different job to be playing for Sheffield United and for Manchester United.'

United tied another of their young homegrown talents to a long-term contract on Wednesday when Scott McTominay, 23, signed a new deal until 2025 with the option of a further year.

'De Gea has been in his armchair, I would bring Henderson back and light the fire under him': Graeme Souness believes youngster should return to Manchester United and challenge 'dodgy' Spaniard for No 1 spot

* Graeme Souness says Manchester United should bring Dean Henderson back
* The former Liverpool manager and Sky pundit called David de Gea 'dodgy'
* Souness thinks Henderson will 'light a fire' as De Gea 'has been in his armchair'
* The Spanish goalkeeper was savaged by Roy Keane after the draw at Tottenham

Graeme Souness believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should bring Dean Henderson back to Old Trafford next season to 'light a fire' under David de Gea and get him out of his 'armchair' amid criticism over his form.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane tore into De Gea following his mistake in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham as he said he would have 'thrown punches' at him and Gary Neville added that the goalkeeper has been in decline for two years since the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

De Gea got the support of Solskjaer ahead of Wednesday's visit from Sheffield United when he was referred to as the 'best goalkeeper in the world'. But for Souness, a lack of a challenge for his spot has been a major factor in his decline.

David de Gea has faced stinging criticism over his form following the Premier League restart. Dean Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United and could challenge back at United. Dean Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United and could challenge back at United. De Gea's mistakes have been scrutinised and he was culpable of one away against Tottenham

'How long do you wait as a manager? At big clubs you cannot wait for ever and this is the second season he has been dodgy,' Souness said on Sky Sports. 'I would get Henderson back and if he is good enough, he's ready.

'He comes back and puts De Gea under pressure. They fight it out between them and get the best out of both of them you are doing your job.

'The clock is ticking on De Gea. He is an unorthodox goalkeeper and as a manager you cannot wait forever. I think De Gea has been in his arm chair, I would bring Henderson back and light the fire under him.

'I think (Henderson) is a big time Charlie and sees himself as ready. You won't know if he is good enough for United until you bring him back. As a manager you have a duty to do the right thing and get the best player in goal.'

Henderson, 23, has been outstanding for Sheffield United during his loan spells and has played a key role in having them on the cusp of European football.

But while Souness was unequivocal about the need to bring him back and unsettle De Gea to coax out his best form, Neville urged caution, reminding his fellow pundits the size of the gap between what he will face at the two clubs.

'What I don't buy into is the idea Dean Henderson can go straight into that goal in front of the Stretford End,' he said. 'It takes a special kind of player to do it. De Gea deserves a break and to get the opportunity to correct his form.

'At the moment he is going through a difficult patch and it is mentally tough, you're challenged. The scrutiny is on him constantly. It is a lonely place out there and with respect to Sheffield United, it is very different for Manchester United than Sheffield United.'

Following some push-back from Souness and fellow in-studio pundit Jamie Redknapp, Neville added: 'My point is, to make that decision, to make Henderson No 1 you are essentially dismissing De Gea and what he has done for United for seven to eight years. I would urge caution on that.

Jamie Redknapp added that he feels Henderson's ceiling is as one of the best in the world. The 23-year-old has played a key role in helping Sheffield United challenge for Europe

'There were times in my day we had goalkeepers who were talented but struggled to cope with the scrutiny.'

Henderson was ineligible to play against his parent club on Wednesday night but has seen his reputation enhance to the point where Solskjaer admitted he can see the 23-year-old eventually become both Manchester United and England's No 1.

'I have no doubt he will be one of the best goalkeepers in the world in a few years,' Redknapp concurred.

'The goal he conceded against Newcastle I felt he made a big mistake but we sort of half-analysed it. When you play for Liverpool or Manchester United you are under a different kind of pressure.

'Him developing at Sheffield United now is the best thing for him. He doesn't want to go there as a No 2. He's made for the top, that bit of arrogance to play at the top level and it is only a matter of time. He will be a top goalkeeper.'

Default Re: Pengganti De Gea ? (jika beneran pindah)

David de Gea vs Dean Henderson is a question Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must seriously consider after his No 1's latest horror show... and there is one key statistic that suggests Man United boss should make a change NOW
David de Gea is under increasing pressure after his latest howler against Chelsea

* Man United keeper allowed Mason Mount's shot past him in FA Cup semi-final
* It follows mistakes against Watford, Everton and Tottenham this season
* United are set to speak to Dean Henderson when he returns from his loan spell
* But Henderson will only return if he is guaranteed the No 1 spot next season
* That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a very difficult decision to make

It has become the issue that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer really didn't want to confront but now cannot ignore.

Manchester United wanted to concentrate on adding extra firepower to their attack this summer and perhaps signing a commanding centre-half.

But after David de Gea's latest error-strewn performance, Solskjaer will have to make one of the toughest decisions of his time in charge at Old Trafford.

David de Gea is under increasing scrutiny after another error in United's defeat by Chelsea. The Spanish keeper allowed Mason Mount's shot to squirm past him for Chelsea's second goal

It could offer Dean Henderson an opportunity to become United's No 1 when he returns from what has been a successful two-season loan spell at Sheffield United

The Spanish goalkeeper has rescued United on countless occasions in the past few seasons of under-achievement, but the mistakes and misjudgments that have crept into his game are starting to make him a liability.

The latest example came at Wembley on Sunday when De Gea, whose positioning was questionable for Olivier Giroud's opener for Chelsea, was most definitely at fault for Mason Mount's second as the ball slipped through his grasp.

And this wasn't an isolated incident. There have been question marks over De Gea for a couple of years now with a number of unnecessary goals conceded.

Naturally, Solskjaer has defended De Gea in public, describing him as the 'best goalkeeper in the world' a few weeks back and insisting this week that 'David is mentally strong enough to know his job.'

But privately the United boss will know that the point is coming when he needs to remove De Gea from the firing line and think about his place as United's No 1 long-term.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to make the difficult choice before next season. Solskjaer has defended De Gea after past mistakes, calling him the 'best keeper in the world'

The good news is that United won't have to spend any money to bring in the keeper maybe needed to challenge De Gea or even usurp him.

Dean Henderson has enjoyed two excellent seasons out on loan at Sheffield United, helping them to promotion into the Premier League last season and then playing a major role in an unexpected top-half finish this.

As Sportsmail reported on Tuesday, United will hold talks with the 23-year-old when he returns from Bramall Lane.

But Henderson has no intention of serving as De Gea's understudy and wants assurances that he will have the gloves ahead of the Spaniard in the important games.

If that cannot be guaranteed, then Henderson, also tipped to be a future England No 1, would prefer to take another loan or move elsewhere. Chelsea have expressed an interest.

Mistakes have crept into De Gea's game, such as this one against Watford in December. The keeper let Ismaila Sarr's long-range effort sneak through his grasp and drop into the net

De Gea was unable to stop Steven Bergwijn's powerful strike in the game with Tottenham

So Solskjaer won't be able to shirk making a difficult decision in the coming weeks and he will certainly complete plenty of analysis to decide whether Henderson really represents an upgrade on someone who has 41 appearances for Spain.

Looking at the stats, it cannot be denied that Henderson has enjoyed a better season than De Gea. With both clubs in the Premier League, it's a fairer comparison this season to last.

In 35 top-flight matches, Henderson has conceded 30 goals at an average of one every 105 minutes and has 13 clean sheets to his credit.

De Gea has played 36 games for Man United - all of them in the league - and conceded 35 goals at an average of one every 93 minutes and has kept 12 clean sheets.

It says much about the improvement in United's back line since they signed Harry Maguire that De Gea conceded 54 goals in 38 games last season and only managed seven clean sheets.

There isn't much between the two keepers when it comes to saves and the percentage of shots on target saved. Henderson has made 96 saves to De Gea's 91, the Englishman keeping out 75.8 per cent of shots to the Spaniard's 72.2.

How De Gea and Henderson compare over the past two seasons. Courtesy of Opta

De Gea's decline can be seen in his season-by-season stats, particularly the errors made

So there really isn't a great deal between the two keepers in terms of performance - until you reach the statistic about errors leading to goals.

Henderson has been culpable for just the one goal in the Premier League this season as opposed to three by De Gea. And that three came off the back of four last season.

It represents a startling rise - or should that be fall - from the early part of his United career when De Gea only made a total of six errors that results in goals in his first seven seasons at Old Trafford.

Now he has committed seven errors in the past two seasons, suggesting that something has gone wrong with his game.

Against Watford back in December, De Gea allowed Ismaila Sarr's effort from distance squirm from his grasp and into the net in comical fashion when it should have been an easy catch.

In the game with Everton at Goodison Park in March he dawdled on the ball, allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to close him down and deflect the clearance back into the net.

Henderson has emerged with a great deal of credit from his two seasons at Sheffield United. 23-year-old Henderson has proved himself a commanding keeper in the Premier League

And against Tottenham in United's first match post-restart in June he failed to keep out Steven Bergwijn's shot that really should have been a comfortable save.

That was the moment that sparked Roy Keane's rant on Sky Sports, the former United captain declaring he was 'sick to death' of De Gea and that he would have been 'swinging punches' at him in the dressing room.

And of course that were before his latest calamity against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.

It's also without taking into consideration De Gea's suddenly suspect positioning, his weakness at the near post and occasional discomfort in passing the ball out from the back.

Yet he remains a superb shot-stopper most of the time and a definite points-saver and match-winner for United.

For all his mistakes, De Gea does remain an outstanding shot-stopper and vital for United. Yet more questions were asked of De Gea when he was beaten by Junior Stanislas (right) at his near post in United's recent game against Bournemouth at Old Trafford

Four times he has been the Player of the Year at United during his time there and at times during the barren years under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, he spared the club humiliation.

But at the moment, it has to be said that his confidence looks shot. He can no longer be relied upon in every situation, he is no longer making saves he should be making.

And Solskjaer will see that on the weight of evidence and the stats that Henderson is performing better.

It will be an enormous call to drop De Gea - who signed a new four-year, £375,000-a-week contract at United only last September - but Solskjaer has shown a ruthless streak since he took over.

But there comes a time when every player must come under scrutiny, especially if their errors prove a hindrance to the team's ambition.

Atletico Madrid will demand full £109m buy-out clause for Jan Oblak as Chelsea and Manchester United register interest in unsettled keeper who is open to Premier League move

* Atletico Madrid are expecting bids to come in for goalkeeper Jan Oblak
* Chelsea are in the market for a replacement for the underperforming Kepa
* Man United are also now monitoring due to David De Gea's ongoing struggles
*Atletico will demand the full £109m and do not want to sell their prized stopper

Atletico Madrid will demand the full £109million buy out clause for Jan Oblak amid concerns that Manchester United are preparing to rival Chelsea for the goalkeeper’s signature.

Oblak is unsettled at Atletico and is looking for a bigger, more ambitious challenge with a move to the Premier League at the forefront of his thinking.

The 27-year old, regarded by many as one of the top three goalkeepers in the world, is understood to have grown unhappy at some of the decisions and direction taken by Atletico’s sporting director Andrea Berta.

Atletico Madrid expect offers for Jan Oblak but will demand his full £109m release be paid up

He is aware that Chelsea would like to sign him but believes Manchester United are also prepared to revive their interest following David de Gea’s drop in form.

United have Dean Henderson chomping at the bit to stake his claim but while the 23-year old is poised to become England’s number one after an excellent season in loan at Sheffield United there are reservations he could still be a little inexperienced to become first choice at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are monitoring the situation following the continued of David De Gea. Yet Dean Henderson has shone at Sheffield United and is desperate to be Old Trafford No.1

United’s other major obstacle is where to sell De Gea as there are few clubs willing to pay a substantial fee plus his £360,000 a week wages.

Chelsea want a new goalkeeper despite the fact £71million signing Kepa Arrizabalaga intends to stay and fight for his place.

Ideally they could offset Oblak’s fee by using Kepa as a makeweight but Atletico don’t want to lose face with fans. They know Oblak is a huge favourite and should he leave they want it to be for a world record fee for a keeper.

Chelsea have been bold in their recruitment so far this year with Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner signed and talks taking place with Bayer Leverkusen for Kai Havertz.

They also want to add two defenders and a midfielder but a reliable keeper remains key to Frank Lampard‘a plans.

However, Atletico’s stance on Oblak has prompted them to consider cheaper alternatives such as Marc Andre Ter Stegen at Barcelona, Alphonse Areola of PSG, Andre Onana at Ajax plus Burnley’s Nick Pope and United’s Henderson.

Oblak though is the type of statement signing that would elevate Chelsea’s title credentials or, indeed, those of United. The key now is who is willing to spend the kind of money Atletico Madrid are demanding in the current climate.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand underlined the scale of the dilemma when he discussed De Gea’s mistakes against Chelsea in Sunday’s FA Cup semi final defeat.‘

Who are you going to get that is out there right now? Dean Henderson is a young goalkeeper, it's a big gamble,’ the former United defender told BT Sport.

‘Who is out there right now that could be bought, that is able to be a world-class goalkeeper at Manchester United? The only one I see is Oblak but can you get him out of Atletico Madrid? If you do, how much would you have to spend?

'An obscene amount of money. I say, stick with [De Gea]. He's earned the right to be stuck with.’

Default Re: Pengganti De Gea ? (jika beneran pindah)

Memungkinkan ga ya jika De Gea tukeran ama Jan Oblak tanpa biaya transfer?
Tapi kalo melihat kesetiaan De Gea selama ini di MU, kasian juga kalo akhirnya harus terusir dari OT.

'David de Gea makes big mistakes that cost Manchester United big points... if they want to challenge for titles, they need a new goalkeeper': Roy Keane urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to axe Spaniard and find new No 1

* Roy Keane doubled down on belief Manchester United must axe David de Gea
* The 29-year-old goalkeeper endured a campaign littered with glaring mistakes
* Despite De Gea's clean sheet on Sunday, Keane was once again in withering form
* Errors against Watford, Everton, Tottenham and Chelsea have led to speculation

Roy Keane has urged Manchester United to replace David de Gea this summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

The 29-year-old has endured a mixed campaign, which has been littered with several high-profile mistakes, and speculation is rife over whether he will retain his spot as the club's first choice goalkeeper.

But despite De Gea recording his 13th clean sheet of the campaign after United beat Leicester to clinch a place in the Champions League, Old Trafford legend Keane was once again withering in his comments.

Glaring errors against Watford, Everton, Tottenham and Chelsea have raised serious questions over De Gea's future - and United were duly punished on all four occasions after failing to win.

Another display of poor handling at the King Power on Sunday almost saw them concede cheaply again, but De Gea was able to recover to deny Jamie Vardy from opening the scoring.

When questioned after the game about United's transfer business, Keane was adamant De Gea must be axed to help close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool.

Roy Keane urged Manchester United to replace David de Gea to challenge for the league title. The Old Trafford great has been withering in criticism of De Gea's performances this season. De Gea had almost committed another error against Leicester on Sunday but recovered well

He told Sky Sports: 'I've never been a big fan of his. He makes far too many mistakes, big mistakes that cost United big points.

'We talk about recruitment, it's a difficult part of the game. That's just my opinion. If Manchester United want to challenge for league titles, they need a better goalkeeper.

'They need a change, they've done it before. I don't know what the big song and dance is about a goalkeeper, Manchester United have been doing it for years.

The 29-year-old star's future is uncertain after committing a string of high-profile mistakes. Keane sensationally raged he would have been 'throwing punches' at De Gea after the mistake

'Strikers are dropped or sold, same with midfielders, but for some reason, with goalkeepers, they think we have to stick with the goalkeeper for a bit longer than others because of something they did two or three years ago.

'The game doesn't work like that. We've seen Liverpool get onto another level when they've improved the goalkeeper.

'What's the big deal? If he's not doing it, he's making mistakes, then make a change. There are good goalkeepers out there.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has remained steadfast in his defence of the Spain international despite his remarkable drop in form, but admitted he had considered dropping him for the tail end of the season.

It may prove difficult for United to find a buyer should they decide to heed former captain Keane's advice considering his exorbitant salary, and the club must also solve the conundrum concerning loanee Dean Henderson.

The outspoken Irishman also infamously raged that he would have been 'swinging punches' at De Gea after the stopper had failed to smother Steven Bergwijn's powerful effort in June.

'It'll be difficult to keep three of them at the club, so we'll see what the decision will be': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Man United face a dilemma with Dean Henderson returning to fight for No 1 spot with David de Gea and Sergio Romero

* Dean Henderson is returning to Manchester United from loan at Sheffield United
* He will have to challenge David de Gea and Sergio Romero for main goalkeeper
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United a face a tough decision

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United will struggle to keep all three of their senior goalkeepers happy and will face a difficult decision this summer.

The Red Devils boss now has the luxury of being able to choose between David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Dean Henderson who has returned from loan at Sheffield United, for next season.

However ahead of United's Europa League tie with FC Copehagen, Solskjaer admitted that a decision will have to be made.

Dean Henderson is hoping to take the number one spot at Manchester United next season

He said: 'Competition for places is important and we're looking to have competition for places.

'We have Dean, Sergio and David at the moment in the ranks. Lee (Grant), the fantastic professional he is, backing them up. But it'll be difficult obviously to keep three of them at the club, so we'll see what the decision will be there.'

Since Solskjaer arrived at the club in December 2018, de Gea has been the Norwegian's first choice ahead of Romero.

David de Gea has had a tough campaign where he has made a number of high-profile mistakes

However the Spaniard's place has come under scrutiny of late following a tough campaign featuring a number of high-profile errors.

Henderson meanwhile has arrived back at Old Trafford after a great season on loan at Sheffield United, with many feeling he could be ready to take the number one spot.

However the 23-year-old could still end up having another year away on loan at Bramall Lane if Solskjaer decides to stick with what he has got.

Sergio Romero is highly rated at Old Trafford and has been starting in the Europa League

Going into their Europa League tie with FC Copenhagen, Solskjaer has the choice of de Gea and Romero with Henderson ineligible to participate in the mini-tournament in Germany.

Solskjaer faces a decision whether to stick with Romero for the conclusion of the tournament.

He said: I must be the most privileged manager in the world with goalkeeping department.

'Sergio, David, Dean Henderson coming up, three top top goalkeepers and this Europa League has shown how important Sergio has been for us and David has always been performing. We'll see what we'll do and going forward.'

Sergio Romero will be hoping a second shot at Europa League glory can propel him into the Manchester United No 1 jersey next season... but will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer give David de Gea another shot at redemption with Dean Henderson waiting in the wings?

* David de Gea has faced unprecedented scrutiny for his errors this season
* Manchester United could also keep Dean Henderson as competition for De Gea
* The most intriguing challenge however appears to be from Sergio Romero
* The Argentine was in goal as United went all the way in the 2017 Europa League
* Now against Copenhagen this year Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a big dilemma

The goalkeeping situation at Manchester United is the problem that has regularly kept rearing its ugly head at various points of a rollercoaster campaign for the club.

First-choice keeper David de Gea has endured an extremely underwhelming season littered with high-profile errors and many have questioned whether his powers are already on the wane even before his 30th birthday.

Moreover, he could face competition from the returning Dean Henderson next season after spending the previous two campaigns on loan at Sheffield United, even if the jury remains out on whether his shoulders are broad enough to deal with the pressure just yet at Old Trafford.

Man United keeper Sergio Romero will be hoping for a second shot at Europa League glory. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given a selection headache in goal due to David de Gea's errors

However, perhaps the most intriguing challenge to the goalkeeping hierarchy comes from Sergio Romero, who has been biding his time as first choice in the cup competitions.

And ahead of United's Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen on Monday evening, the dilemma will once again be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's mind as United aim to take another step towards repeating their European heroics of 2017.

It was during United's victorious Europa League campaign three years ago under Jose Mourinho that Argentine Romero first properly showcased his talent between the sticks, having joined from Sampdoria in 2015.

He played all but three of United's 15 games in the competition that season, including the 2-0 victory against Ajax in the final in Sweden as United clinched their sixth European title.

De Gea has faced unprecedented scrutiny following a number of high-profile blunders

Reports of Dean Henderson's return have also increased competition for the no 1 jersey

But Romero's success - particularly towards the latter stages of the competition - brought little reward in terms of sustained opportunities to challenge De Gea for the number one spot, making just two Champions League appearances the following season and playing just a single Premier League match.

The 33-year-old however will be hoping that second time is really the charm, having made 16 appearances for United in all competitions this season, with half of those coming in the Europa League.

Romero has conceded just twice in those eight appearances, and despite being seemingly out of position for Club Brugge's Emmanuel Bonaventure's opener in Belgium in February, he had no chance of stopping LASK skipper Philipp Wiesinger curling an effort into the top corner at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

And having seen De Gea flop on several occasions this season and criticised heavily from all spheres as a result, Romero could take not only another step to a second European medal but also get his big chance to add to the competition for the No 1 jersey next season by performing well in Germany against the Danish outfit.

Romero has played eight times for Manchester United in this season's Europa League. But the Argentine may still have Solskjaer's FA Cup semi-final decision in the back of his mind

The doubt that may however linger in Romero's mind can be traced back to the events of the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last month.

Romero had looked assured between the sticks in the FA Cup, having played all the fixtures leading up to their Wembley showdown against Chelsea and conceded only Todd Cantwell's stunner as United beat Wolves, Tranmere, Derby and Norwich to reach the last four.

But Romero cut a frustrated figure as he was benched against Frank Lampard's side, with salt rubbed into the wounds as he watched on and saw his Spanish replacement allow a routine-looking Mason Mount drive escape his grasp after being questioned for his role in Olivier Giroud's opener.

The pressure on 29-year-old De Gea following the game - which had come after he conceded another sloppy goal to Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn in United's first game following the Premier League restart - remains to this day.

Solskjaer admitted in his press conference leading up to the Copenhagen match that he will struggle to keep all his goalkeepers happy, with Henderson's impending return also having intensified since the Spaniard's Wembley nightmare.

'Competition for places is important and we're looking to have competition for places.

'We have Dean, Sergio and David at the moment in the ranks. Lee (Grant), the fantastic professional he is, backing them up. But it'll be difficult obviously to keep three of them at the club, so we'll see what the decision will be there.'

The decision is likely to be in some part determined by their ability to convince Henderson to accept a new and improved deal as leverage in convincing him to return to Sheffield United next season before taking the reins from de Gea.

Having played in all of the games before the Chelsea showdown, Romero was dropped. He then watched on from the bench as De Gea made a blunder for at least one Chelsea goal

However, it appears that for the remainder of this season at least, the shootout for the famed United jersey could well determine whether United win their first trophy since their victory against Ajax in Solna.

Speaking to BT Sport's new Club 2020 show, former United duo Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher agreed that the perfect opportunity to begin breeding a brand new winning culture in a young, vibrant United squad has presented itself.

However, having almost single-handedly surrendered the chance to take another step towards matching Arsenal's then record of 13 FA Cups last month, Solskjaer could be reticent to displace Romero again in Germany in favour of De Gea without the slightest hint of guilt.

But if the FA Cup is the blueprint Solskjaer is looking to employ for the remainder of the eight-team tournament in Germany this week, Romero may well see his dual hopes of further glory and a challenge for the no.1 jersey taken out of his hands.

Solskjaer has admitted he cannot hope to keep three goalkeepers happy next season. But for now it appears De Gea and Romero will have to fight it out to play in Germany this week
