Stoke-on-Trent - Stoke City memberhentikan Mark Hughes dari posisi manajer. The Potters tak punya pilihan lain karena Hughes tak bisa memberi hasil yang menggembirakan belakangan ini.

Stoke cuma menang dua kali dalam sepuluh pertandingan terakhirnya di Premier League dan menelan tujuh kekalahan. Serangkaian hasil buruk itu membuat posisi mereka di klasemen sementara terjun bebas.

Stoke terlempar ke peringkat ke-18 karena baru mengumpulkan 20 poin dari 22 pertandingan. Jumlah poin mereka cuma lebih baik daripada West Bromwich Albion dan Swansea City.

Stoke menganggap pergantian manajer adalah satu-satunya cara untuk memperbaiki keadaan. Mereka pun memecat Hughes, yang sudah menjadi manajer mereka selama empat setengah tahun terakhir.

Hughes, 54 tahun, mendapatkan surat pemecatan tak lama setelah timnya disingkirkan klub League Two, Coventry City, di babak ketiga Piala FA, Sabtu (6/1/2018).

"Stoke City bisa mengonfirmasi bahwa kontrak manajer Mark Hughes telah diputus. Kami ingin berterima kasih kepada Mark atas semua yang dia capai untuk klub selama empat setengah tahun terakhir, terutama membawa kami finis di posisi kesembilan Premier League dalam tiga musim secara beruntun, dan kami mendoakan dia sukses di masa mendatang," tulis Stoke dalam pernyataannya.

Hughes menjadi manajer ketujuh yang dipecat di Premier League musim ini. Dia bernasib sama seperti Frank de Boer (Crystal Palace), Craig Shakespeare (Leicester City), Ronald Koeman (Everton), Slaven Bilic (West Ham United), Tony Pulis (West Bromwich Albion), dan Paul Clement (Swansea City).

EARLY TEAM NEWS: UNITED V STOKE CITY

Jose Mourinho is busy formulating his plan for Manchester United's anticipated return to Premier League action on Monday night, when managerless Stoke City visit Old Trafford.

As this is a rare week without a fixture, the boss has flown his squad out to Dubai to complete a morale-boosting, warm-weather training camp at the superb Nad Al Sheba complex.

The images and videos from the Middle East show the players and staff are clearly enjoying the mini break from the campaign, although minds have remained focused on Monday’s visit of Stoke.

Mourinho has been busy working on tactics in training, which he hasn’t been able to do in recent months due to the hectic fixture list, and one question in his mind is who will start at right-back?

Ashley Young is still suspended as part of the three-match ban that he received for an incident against Southampton on 30 December. In his absence, against Everton and Derby County, Victor Lindelof has started and the Sweden international produced two eye-catching performances.

However, it is seemingly possible that first-choice right-back Antonio Valencia could make his return from injury after training all week in Dubai. The stand-in captain has been missing with a hamstring problem that he sustained during the victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on 17 December.

Former United player Sammy McIlroy is confident the Ecuadorian will be fit to feature. "I think Antonio will be back against Stoke," he told MUTV. "The manager said he is back in training and Valencia is a fit boy, so it won't take him long. In the last few years, he has made that right-back position his own. He is so strong, he is built like a boxer, and he has enjoyed the best form of his career in the last few seasons for me."

Mourinho is set to hold his pre-match press conference on Friday and the boss may provide an update on Valencia’s condition, and possibly Michael Carrick’s too after the welcomed images of the club captain training with the squad following his recent absence due to a heart problem.

Carrick has not played since the Carabao Cup tie against Burton Albion back in September and, in a statement released on 24 November, the 36-year-old midfielder revealed he had suffered from an irregular heart rhythm that required a procedure called a cardiac ablation.

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly is still unavailable in defence and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to be out for another two to three weeks, after the manager’s recent declaration that the striker is out “for a month”.

It remains to be seen if Sergio Romero is fit – the Argentina international has not travelled to Dubai.

Setting the scene… The Reds return to Premier League action on Monday night by welcoming a struggling Stoke City side, who parted company with former United striker Mark Hughes as their manager last week, to the Theatre of Dreams. United have made a positive start to 2018 after successive 2-0 wins over Everton in the league and Derby County in the Emirates FA Cup. Although Jose Mourinho’s men are yet to get the better of the Potters since the manager’s arrival in the summer of 2016, the Reds will be confident of making it a hat-trick of wins in 2018 and will undoubtedly be raring to go following a week of warm-weather training in Dubai after a 10-day break since booking an FA Cup fourth-round tie against League Two side Yeovil Town.

Who will be in charge of Stoke? The Potters parted company with Mark Hughes after four-and-a-half years in charge after they were dumped out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat against League Two Coventry City - managed by his former United team-mate Mark Robins - at the Ricoh Arena in his 200th match in charge of the club. Stoke have begun the search for a new boss and have been linked with a number of top names, including ex-Watford boss Quique Sanchez-Flores and Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill. First-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki has been placed in temporary charge on a day-to-day basis and, should a new manager not be appointed by Monday, he would take charge of the Potters at Old Trafford.

How have Stoke been doing? It’s been a tough time of late for the Staffordshire club, who have dropped into the relegation zone after a run of five defeats in the last seven league games before last weekend's defeat at Coventry spelled the end of Hughes's tenure. In their last away league game, at the end of December, they were thumped 5-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. But the Potters have bolstered their defensive options this week with the signing of Austrian international right-back Moritz Bauer from Russian outfit Rubin Kazan on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

What’s our record like against them? Historically, we have a mixed overall record against the Potters, having won 43, drawn 36 and lost 28 of our 107 meetings in all competitions stretching back to 1893. The Reds have dominated this fixture since Stoke's promotion a decade ago, with 12 wins from 19 Premier League games, but the last three meetings have finished in draws – including a 2-2 scoreline back in September which ended our 100 per cent start to the season.

One to watch: Stoke have only scored 23 goals in 22 league games this season and they have four players tied on four goals each. But, despite their dismal run, one man that has stood out is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroon international forward, who signed from Schalke last summer, has impressed with four goals and four assists this term. He scored an important goal in the Potters' last win – a 3-1 success over West Bromwich Albion on 23 December – and the Reds' defence will be wary of his threat after his brace in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
