Default Man United U-18 Matches 2015/16

Under-18s: West Brom 1 United 1

Barclays U18 Premier League
Saturday 8 August

WEST BROM U18 1
(Melbourne 11)

MANCHESTER UNITED U18 1
(Dearnley 18)

Manchester United started the Barclays Under-18 Premier League season with a 1-1 draw at West Brom with Zach Dearnley scoring a first-half equaliser.

The Reds, who included trialists Thomas Sang and DJ Buffonge in the line-up, fell behind in the 11th minute when Max Melbourne broke through the defence. Although Oliver Byrne kept out Melbourne's initial shot, the Baggies man snapped up the rebound after it bounced off Jimmy Dunne.

Seven minutes later, Buffonge took a corner to the back post where Dearnley climbed highest to convert a header for the leveller.

United had the majority of possession throughout the game but struggled to take the chances that were carved out in the final third. Consequently, West Brom played mostly on the counter attack and, despite hitting the bar before half time, they rarely threatened Byrne's goal.

Marcus Rashford also rattled the woodwork in the second period after a great run and, in the closing minutes, Callum Gribbin's free-kick hit the frame of the goal to leave the Reds frustrated not to get a winner.

United starting XI: Byrne; Sang (Thompson 78), Williams, Dunne, Hamilton; Whelan, Kehinde (Kenyon 69), Buffonge, Dearnley; Gribbin; Rashford. Subs: Dorrington, Tanner, Diedrick-Roberts.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 SUNDERLAND 2

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 16 January 2016 | Scorers: Boonen 32; Molyneux 7, Casey 50.

Manchester United’s youngsters put in a battling performance against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, but they just fell short of halting their recent run of disappointing league results.

Paul McGuinness’s lads were certainly hoping for a timely boost ahead of Friday’s exciting FA Youth Cup fourth-round clash against Chelsea at Altrincham, and they certainly made a bright and enthusiastic start to the game in chilly but sunny conditions at the Aon Training Complex. Early frost had disappeared and the pitch looked perfect as the match got under way.

The Reds were full of running in the opening moments of the match and Sunderland were required to put in a good deal of chasing in an attempt to gain possession of the ball. That said, Black Cats winger Luke Molyneux cut in from the right to hit a fine warning shot that thudded against the woodwork.

Five minutes later, Molyneux tried his luck for a second time with more success as his strike flew fiercely into George Dorrington’s net. It was a disappointing setback for the young Reds who had looked the better team up to that point.

Happily, McGuinness's team responded well to Sunderland's opener and proceeded to look threatening when approaching the Black Cats’ penalty area. It therefore came as no real surprise when, in the 32nd minute, Indy Boonen provided the finishing touch to a splendidly-structured attack and levelled the game at 1-1.

The parity lasted until five minutes into the second half when Molyneux sent over a corner from the right and Sunderland skipper Dan Casey got above the United defence to head home.

The Reds, to their credit, kept their composure and continued to give the Sunderland defence some nervy moments. Callum Gribbin was really unlucky with a free kick that required a great save from visitors’ keeper Michael Waud to prevent it from entering the net. Jake Kenyon also went close, with a shot that could easily have produced a second equaliser.

At the other end, Dorrington performed well in goal, particularly in the second half, with a couple of saves that helped to keep his team in with a shout until the final whistle.

This was the young Reds' 10th straight defeat in the league but that can now be put to the back of their minds as the focus switches to Chelsea’s visit to Moss Lane on Friday. That promises to be a tantalising cup tie and will hopefully be, like the third-round victory over Queens Park Rangers, a night to remember.

United: Dorrington; Sang, Reid (Spratt 78), Dunne, Kenyon; Whelan, Gribbin, Scott, Kehinde (Tanner 74); Dearnley (Diedrick-Roberts 74), Boonen. Sub not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui (GK). Pictured: Tosun Kehinde.

This match was shown live on MUTV and the club's official television channel will broadcast highlights at 17:30 GMT on Sunday after post-match reaction to the first-team clash with Liverpool.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER CITY 2 UNITED 0

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 27 January 2016 | Scorers: Nmecha (pen) 20, Brahim 78

Manchester United slipped to defeat in the Academy derby on Wednesday afternoon despite putting in a battling performance against title favourites Manchester City.

Goals by Lukas Nmecha and Brahim Diaz in the first and second half respectively were enough to give the Blues victory after the Reds' Charlie Scott was dismissed in the 20th minute.

Cloudy, windy and chilly was the only way to describe the conditions as the game got under way at City’s Academy Stadium on the Etihad Campus in Clayton. Both sides were wearing their traditional kits with the only exception being that United were in black shorts to contrast with City's white.

There was a tentative start to the contest with neither side pulling out the stops in an attempt to claim the first goal of the game. But as time wore on the Blues began to have more possession of the ball and as a result chances started to arrive.

United were working hard against the league leaders, but then, in the 20th minute, another City attack was ended abruptly when Scott felled Nmecha just inside the penalty area. The referee awarded the spot-kick instantly, but then, following consultation with his assistant showed Scott the red card and directed him to the dressing room.

It was a major blow for United and the situation was compounded when Nmecha stepped forward to comfortably despatch the penalty past Reds goalkeeper Oliver Byrne.

City continued to dominate the play during the first half and despite looking capable of adding to their tally, Nmecha’s goal was all that separated the teams at the break.

The pattern of the game altered little after the restart with the Blues continuing to make most of the pressing, but without any end product.

Midway through the second half, United broke away down the right wing in what looked to be a promising attack, but it all came to nothing when Zachary Dearnley fired just wide of the far post.

City had threatened to increase their lead for most of the second half despite a good performance from United’s defence and, with twelve minutes remaining, the Blues eventually found a second successful route to goal when Diaz fired home from close range to complete their 2-0 triumph.

United: Byrne; Reid, Warren, Scott, Kenyon; Dearnley (Gomes 79), Whelan, Kehinde, Boonen (Diedrick-Roberts 89); Gribbin; Rashford. Subs not used: Dunne, Moutha-Sebtaoui, Sang. Pictured: Callum Gribbin.

MUTV will show highlights of this match at 21:00 GMT tonight (Wednesday).

Manchester United's Under 18s lose 11th straight game - the root and branch overhaul Ed Woodward ordered is urgent

* Manchester United Under 18s were beaten 2-0 Manchester City
* It is United's 11th straight defeat and the gap between the rivals is growing
* Ed Woodward has ordered an overhaul of United's youth system

The cracks in Manchester United’s famed academy were apparent again on Wednesday as the Under 18s suffered their 11th league defeat in a row.

The fact that it came at the hands of neighbours Manchester City only served to highlight once more the increasing gap between the youth systems of these two rivals.

The ‘root and branch’ overhaul of United’s academy ordered by Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward cannot come soon enough for a club that once prided itself on youth development.

Manchester United's Under 18s lost its 11th league match in a row against Manchester City on Wednesday

It’s not only the Under-18s who are under-achieving, even though their current slump has caused alarm around Carrington. The 2-0 defeat to City followed a 5-1 FA Youth Cup thrashing at the hands of Chelsea.

Paul McGuinness’s side were handicapped by the early sending-off of defender Charlie Scott, but City could have won far more emphatically.

The shift in power has been evident in other age-groups for some time too. Only last September, United’s Under-14s were hammered 9-0 by their neighbours.

The last bastion of Old Trafford supremacy is the Under-21s, led by Warren Joyce. The 51-year-old has been in sole charge since December 2010 when co-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left to take over at Molde in Norway, and has won the Under-21Premier League title in two of the last three seasons.

Just as importantly for United fans stupefied by the football being served up by Louis van Gaal’s first-team, Joyce has got the reserves playing the kind of attacking football that has been so sorely missed at Old Trafford this season.

The Under-21s have hit 20 goals in winning their last six games against Sunderland, Southampton, Reading, Tottenham, Leicester and Liverpool since suffering their only defeat of the season at Norwich in November.

United are in second place in the table, three points behind leaders Sunderland, but have three games in hand and are favourites to retain their title. The only other club with a realistic chance of stopping them are City, with the two clubs due to meet home and away in February.

Joyce has been responsible for maintaining a steady flow of young talent during his eight years at United, including current first-teamers Jesse Lingard, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Paddy McNair. It has not gone unnoticed by the club’s hierarchy, and the former Hull City and Royal Antwerp boss can be assured of a place in the new set-up.

Nicky Butt will head up the academy once he signs a new contract but almost every other position is open to change, from head of recruitment Derek Langley to age-group coaches like McGuinness.

Almost every position is open to change, including that of Under 18s manager McGuinness

United will also consider appointing a director of football strategy whose role would be to forge closer links between the senior squad and academy.

Oxford United manager Michael Appleton has been linked with a return to the club where he started his career, potentially in a role working with the Under-21s, but United know they cannot alienate Joyce.

As Woodward tries to make up lost ground on City, he will need all the good help he can get.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 2 STOKE CITY 0

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 13 February 2016 | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Gribbin 27’, Rashford 33’

Manchester United Under-18s reacted positively to the departure of coach Paul McGuinness with a deserved 2-0 win over Stoke City for their first league victory since September.

Tommy Martin, in temporary charge following McGuinness’s exit on Friday, will be delighted with what he saw as first-half goals from Callum Gribbin and Marcus Rashford earned the Reds all three points at the Aon Training Complex.

United, who made three changes to the team unfortunate to lose 1-0 at Stoke a fortnight ago, had to defend well in the opening exchanges as the Potters began brightly on a crisp morning in Manchester.

Thibaud Verlinden and Jake Dunnwoody tested United goalkeeper Oliver Byrne from outside the box before the Reds began to pose a threat and broke the deadlock on 27 minutes.

Gribbin won possession on the right hand side, drove purposefully into the box and stroked home past Chris Marques from a tight angle.

After scoring for the first time in three games, the Reds quickly followed it up with a second goal six minutes later when Rashford, an unused substitute for the first team’s win at Watford in November, raced on to Callum Whelan’s pass before cutting inside several defenders to slot into the bottom corner.

The Reds were firmly in control of proceedings without creating many chances but Stoke almost reduced the arrears just before half-time as Dunnwoody chipped an effort wide from Danny Jarvis’s through ball.

United continued in the same vein after the break as Rashford went close with a curling free-kick before Darren McIntosh-Buffonge had a low shot from 20 yards tipped onto the post by Marques.

Stoke enjoyed most of the play in a second half which lacked the same intensity as the first but the Potters struggled to break through.

The visitors' substitute Shola Ayoola, who scored the winner when the sides met at Clayton Wood, brought a fine save out of Byrne as the well-organised Reds stayed determined to record only a second league clean sheet of the season.

The win lifts United off the bottom of the Academy Premier League North, a point above Stoke, and ends a 12-game losing run in the league.

A dominant display and three points will give the Reds a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the next game against local rivals and league leaders Manchester City at the Aon Training Complex on Wednesday afternoon (KO 13:00 GMT).

United: Byrne; Reid, Warren, Dunne (c), Spratt; Whelan, Kehinde, McIntosh-Buffonge (Makela 70’), Gribbin; Rashford (Tanner 67’), Dearnley (Diedrick-Roberts 80’). Subs not used: Dorrington. Booked: Dunne.

Stoke City: Marques, Edwards, Wells, Jarvis, Reid, Da Silva, Verlinden (Butler 45’), Dunnwoody, Abdallah (Ayoola 66’), Brierley, Russo. Subs not used: Allen, Twford, Wara.

Default Re: Man United U-18 Matches 2015/16

Full Time : ManUtd U18 1 - 1 ManCity U18

United began the game brightly moving the ball around quickly and accurately in the opening minutes with Tosin Kehinde particularly bright as he kept the ball in tight spaces on a couple of occasions. Despite United having more of the possession City looked dangerous every time they came forward with Diaz looking lively down the left-wing and providing a couple of dangerous balls into the box which United did well to deal with. The first chance of the game came in the 15th minute as United lost the ball too easily on the edge of the box which was seized upon by Nmecha who fired over with the aid of a touch off the top of the crossbar.

City were taking over more as the game wore on and went close again as a short corner was played to Diaz who cut into the box and fired a powerful shot which was well pushed wide by Byrne in the 19th minute. Oliver Byrne had to be on guard again a couple of minutes later as he pushed away a near post shot from Nemane. United were looking disjointed as they struggled to put any real moves together as a team despite a number of players doing well individually. There was a double shout for a City penalty in the 34th minute as Tyrell Warren challenged Nmecha in the box before having the ball fired against him arm although its debatable how much he knew about it.

It was easy to see why City have the best defensive record in the league as they pressed well as a team and denied United any space to play in as it took United until the 39th minute to have their first shot on target as Callum Gribbin’s 25-yard effort was easily held by the City keeper. City took the lead their dominance deserved as Gribbin’s pass put Scott under pressure and the ball found its way to Nmecha who twisted his way past Dunne before firing past Byrne to make it 1-0 in the 42nd minute. United went in at trailing at half time after a half where City created all the chances.

The second half began in a similar vain to how the first had ended with City seeing more of the ball and United struggling to find an outlet when they did get on the ball. City went close to extending their lead in the 52nd as a corner found its way to Kongolo at the back post but Byrne was again on hand to push the ball away before City again went close in the 55th minute with Nmecha back heeling the ball onto the post after good work down the right by Diaz. It was becoming a game of attack versus defence as City peppered United’s goal with shots and United couldn’t get any foothold in the game.

In the 64th minute United equalised completely against the run of play as DJ Buffonge’s pass Zachary Dearnley who found Warren bursting into the box and when his effort was pushed away Callum Whelan was on hand to sweep home the rebound to make it 1-1. United immediately made a double change with Thomas Sang and Aidan Barlow replacing Kenyon and Buffonge. City were close to retaking the lead in the 69th minute as Nemane’s cross found Nmecha but he was brilliantly denied by Byrne who stuck out a foot to deflect the close range effort wide.

The introduction of Barlow helped United to raise their game is he worked tirelessly to close down the City players and forced them into mistakes on a number of occasions and also showed his ability on the ball as he drove forward at every opportunity. United did well to deny City any chances in the closing stages with Warren particularly impressive making a number of important challenges and even carrying the ball forward well to take off some of the pressure. United showed their battling spirit to see out a 1-1 draw in a game where they were under a lot of pressure for long spells.

Manchester United: Byrne; Reid, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon (Sang 65′); Scott, Whelan; Dearnley, Gribbin (Tanner 82′), Kehinde; Buffonge (Barlow 65′)
Substitutes not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Diedrick-Roberts

Next match tanggal 20 Februari 2016 lawan West Brom di AON Training Complex

U18S : MANCHESTER UNITED 1 MANCHESTER CITY

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 17 February 2016 | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Nmecha (42'), Whelan (64')

Manchester United Under-18s came from behind to rescue a point against Manchester City in an entertaining Academy derby on Wednesday afternoon.

City's top scorer Lukas Nmecha opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a well-taken effort, but Callum Whelan was in the right place to fire United level with 25 minutes remaining.

The Reds made two changes to the side that beat Stoke 2-0 at the weekend, and matched the league leaders in a tentative opening period at the Aon Training Complex.

Early on, both sides were eager to keep the ball in difficult weather conditions, but the visitors soon grew into the contest and created the first real chance on 14 minutes. Nmecha received the ball on the edge of the area and raced into the box, only to see his rising shot come back off the crossbar.

The Blues' Spanish midfielder Brahim Diaz - a constant thorn in United's side - then forced Oliver Byrne into a diving save, before the Reds goalkeeper thwarted Aaron Nemane's powerful shot moments later.

With United struggling to get into an attacking rhythm, the Blues had claims for a penalty on the half-hour mark rejected, after Nmecha went down under the challenge of Tyrell Warren.

The Reds' first opportunity came five minutes before the break, as DJ Buffonge latched onto a superb ball out of defence and teed up Callum Gribbin, whose dipping shot from 20 yards was straight down the throat of Daniel Grimshaw.

However, the visitors went ahead two minutes later as a defence-splitting pass found Nmecha who twisted and turned on the edge of the box before firing beyond Byrne.

The second half started as the first had ended, with the away side putting pressure on the United goal. The Reds again had Byrne to thank on 52 minutes, after pinball in the box allowed City's Rodney Kongolo a sight at goal. The Blues went even closer to a second shortly after, as Diaz's mazy run eventually resulted in him squaring the ball for Nmecha, but the striker's backheel struck the woodwork.

United were by no means out of the game though and had a rare attempt on goal through Zachary Dearnley with half an hour remaining, a chance which sparked life into the Reds. The equaliser came on 64 minutes, as Whelan pounced on a loose ball to sidefoot home after a goalmouth scramble.

City then had a glorious chance to produce a near-immediate response, when Nemane beat his defender and squared for the unmarked Nmecha, only for Byrne to get back and deny what looked a certain goal. There would be one final half-chance for the Blues but typically the ball ended up in the safe hands of Byrne, as the Reds held on for a share of the spoils.

The 1-1 draw ends City's seven-game winning streak and although it isn't enough to lift United off the bottom of the Academy Premier League North, it means the Reds are now unbeaten in two games after previously suffering a long run of defeats.

West Bromwich Albion will be United's next opponents, at the Aon Training Complex this Saturday, 20 February, when the Reds will look to build on this determined derby display. Kick-off is at 11:00 GMT with live coverage on MUTV.

Manchester United and Manchester City draw in Under-18 'mini-derby' as new academy chief Nicky Butt watches on

* Manchester United drew 1-1 with Manchester City in U18 Premier League
* New United head of academy Nicky Butt watches on at Carrington
* Lukas Nmecha fired City into the lead after they dominated first-half
* But Callum Whelan equalised for the Reds to secure a point

Callum Whelan earned a draw for Manchester United in Wednesday's Under-18 mini-derby after Lukas Nmecha had fired neighbours Manchester City into a first-half lead.

The stalemate at United's Carrington training complex means the table-topping Blues will have to wait a little longer before they can secure the northern section title in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

They sit three points clear of Everton and have a goal difference of +9, a far cry from bottom-of-the-table United.

Nicky Butt, who was this week appointed as United's new head of academy, watched on as City made the brighter start.

After 15 minutes, top scorer Nmecha created room to shoot on the edge of the penalty area but saw his effort cannon back off the crossbar.

The visitors continued to swarm forward and United goalkeeper Oliver Byrne was forced into a full-stretch diving save from City's tricky Spanish midfielder Brahim Diaz, before also thwarting Aaron Nemane's strike shortly afterwards.

City found their inevitable breakthrough three minutes before the break as Nmecha showed excellent close control to beat the United defence before sending a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Callum Whelan earned a draw for United in the second-half having been second best

It was similarly one-way traffic after the break and Byrne was again called into action, blocking with his legs from Rodney Kongolo's effort.

And they came even closer a few minutes later when Nmecha's backheel from a Diaz cut-back came back off the upright.

United had threatened rarely but made City pay for their misses on 64 minutes when Whelan poked the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.

There was still time for Byrne to make one more save after Nemane had squared to the unmarked Nmecha, but City couldn't force a winner.
