UNDER-18S: UNITED 3 CITY 3

Manchester United and City battled out a hugely entertaining draw in the mini-derby at the Aon Training Complex.

The thriller swung one way then the other throughout and, with four penalties being given, and all scored, this was a truly sumptuous game contested by two finely balanced teams.

Chilly and dull, but dry at the Aon Training Complex, the conditions were ideal as these great rivals lined up for the kick-off.

If the colours of the shirts, United and City in their traditional red and blue shirts respectively, weren’t sufficient to inform the casual onlooker that this was a Manchester derby, the hectic opening few minutes certainly did.

The game opened at a brisk pace with both sides doing their best to embrace the old adage that ‘attack is the best form of defence‘. Both goalkeepers were involved in the first rush of action, but it wasn’t until the 14th minute that one of them, City’s Louie Moulden was called upon to deal with a serious challenge.

United’s Charlie McCann, who was looking to weave his way into the City area, had his progress halted when he was tripped just inside the box by the Blues’ Lewis Florini. Dylan Levitt, who was successful spot in the Under-18s’ last home fixture, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, stepped up confidently to place his shot crisply past Moulden. There had been little to choose between the sides, but all games and particularly derbies, the end product is all-important target and Neil Ryan’s lads had struck the first blow.
The contest continued in a similar vein with one or two decent chances being created at both ends. Then, with four minutes of the first half left, the game was turned on its head as City proceeded to claim the lead in an extraordinary manner. Twice in a matter of three minutes, Florini, who’d been guilty of the foul that gave United a penalty, scored twice from the spot himself to put his side in front. Brandon Williams and Ethan Laird were the Reds involved in the incidents that preceded the penalty awards, which referee Peter Shacklady awarded without a moment’s hesitation.

Those two late strikes ensured that the Blues finished the first half with their noses in front, but the second half was to be equally entertaining.

In the 57th minute, United clawed our way back into the match when Mason Greenwood’s shot was blocked by Moulden, but D’Mani Mellor was quick to react and gleefully tapped home the equaliser.
United had been having one of our best spells of the match and, in the 69th minute, we recaptured the lead from – believe it or not (!) - the penalty spot. Levitt converted again after Greenwood had been felled by Moulden, who raced from his line to fell the United striker with a clumsy challenge.

This was a cracker of a game and there was even more to come for, with under 15 minutes to go, the Blues drew level once more with Florini providing the pass for Cole Palmer to take advantage of some loose defending by shooting past James Thompson.
With six goals shared and four penalty-kicks finding the intended target, this was a classic derby in every sense and nobody in the considerable gathering could possibly complain about the entertainment level which was of the highest standard.

Ultimately, a 3-3 draw was a fair result because neither side deserved to lose this exceptional mini-derby. However, it could have been won at the death with Greenwood and Ethan Galbraith going close for the Reds and home skipper James Garner forced into a flying header off his own line deep into stoppage time.

United:Thompson; Puigmal, Laird (Galbraith 67), Bernard, B. Williams (Devine 58); Traore, Garner, Levitt; Mellor, Greenwood, McCann (Ramazani 73).

Substitutes not used: Carney, McGhee.

Scorers: Levitt 14,69 (both pens) Mellor 57 | Florini 40,43 (both pens), Palmer 76

MERSEY FIXTURE CHANGES FOR UNDER-18S

Manchester United's Under-18 Premier League games against Everton and Liverpool have been moved.

Neil Ryan's side were set to take on the table-topping Toffees this Saturday, live on MUTV, but the fixture has been postponed due to the Blues' FA Youth Cup commitments, namely a home third-round tie against Sunderland.

The United game will now be played at Finch Farm on 5 February 2019 with a 13:00 GMT kick-off.

Meanwhile, the home clash with Liverpool at the Aon Training Complex has been switched from 5 January 2019 to 9 February (11:00 GMT kick-off), meaning that will be a big week next year for the youngsters.

United safely qualified as group winners for the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League with the 6-2 thumping of Young Boys on Tuesday and the competition for places at the younger levels will keep giving Ryan a selection headache.

“It does make it very hard,” he said. “What we're trying to create is that environment where everyone is pushing each other in training - mentally, physically, tactically and so on. With everything we do with them, we want that feeling of unity and a squad where everyone is working for a common purpose and so on. We're going to need the squad to help us through the upcoming games.”

UNDER-18S: UNITED 3 CHELSEA 0

Three first-half goals, scored by D’Mani Mellor, Di’Shon Bernard and Brandon Williams, were enough to give Neil Ryan’s side a fine win over Chelsea in Under-18 Premier League Cup at the Aon Training Complex.

United wouldn’t normally be entertaining Chelsea at this level because the Academy League is regionalised, but the teams were meeting this morning in the League Cup competition which, of course, can throw any teams together through the draw system. This match was also a dress rehearsal for the eagerly awaited clash between the clubs in the FA Youth Cup third round on Monday week at Leigh Sports Village Stadium.

Both United and Chelsea looked determined not to concede anything in the early moments but, with under 12 minutes on the clock, United delivered the first blow when Mellor, playing alongside Mason Greenwood at the point of United’s attack, scored to put his team into the lead, pouncing on a poor backpass to steer home.

It was just the boost United needed and, 10 minutes later, we strengthened our position when Bernard got above the Chelsea defence to head home the second goal from Arnau Puigmal’s clever free-kick, the ball flicking Greenwood on its way into the net. Two minutes from half-time, United added a third, thanks to full-back Williams’s precise finish with his right foot from Greenwood’s inch-perfect pass.

Three-nil to the good at half-time is a scoreline that surely few people could have predicted but, overall, the Reds were pretty good value for this commanding lead.

Early in the second half, a terrific three-man move involving Greenwood, Mellor and Aliou Traore ended with the latter blazing his shot over the bar. Moments later, and the same player was close to scoring again when his hooked shot ended up on the roof of the net.

The bright weather had given way to gloom and drizzle, but that did nothing to change the flow of the game which had provided some fine entertainment for the regulars dotted along the touchline and in the mini-stands.

United keeper James Thompson ensured a clean sheet when he made a brave diving save to deny Chelsea’s Henry Lawrence. Greenwood could have claimed a late fourth but he drilled wide after some mesmerising footwork and then had another attempt deflected out for a corner as Ryan's side finished the tie on the front foot. So United are safely through as group winners, with nine points from three matches, while Chelsea must wait to see if they are one of the best second-placed sides.

United: Thompson; Puigmal, Bernard, Garner, B. Williams (Devine 87); Galbraith (Ramazani 63), Traore, Levitt, McCann (Stanley 86); Mellor, Greenwood.

Substitutes not used: Carney, Bejger.

Manchester United 3 Chelsea 0 | Scorers: Mellor 12, Bernard 21, B. Williams 43

NEXT UP

The two teams meet again in the FA Youth Cup third round on Monday 17 December at Leigh Sports Village, kick-off 19:00 GMT. The big game is live on MUTV, with Chelsea, the holders, likely to field a different-looking line-up.

YOUNG REDS DRAW LIVERPOOL

Manchester United have been drawn away to Liverpool in the Under-18 Premier League Cup quarter-finals.

The tie is the reward for the Reds topping a group that contained Chelsea, Newcastle United and Norwich City - winning all three matches without conceding a goal and knocking out the much-respected Blues, which also occurred in the FA Youth Cup last month.

Liverpool also posted a 100 per cent record in Group B, overcoming Stoke City, Southampton and Reading.

The provisional date for the game, to be confirmed, is Saturday 26 January.

United won the league game 3-1 in Kirkby in August.

The youngsters have plenty to look forward to this month, including the Sparkasse & VGH Cup in Germany and, of course, the FA Youth Cup clash against Brighton & Hove Albion at Leigh Sports Village on 21 January.

Quarter-final draw:

Derby County v Tottenham
Liverpool v United
Middlesbrough v Everton
Stoke v Man City

DATE SET FOR REDS' NEXT FA YOUTH CUP TIE

Manchester United's Under-18s will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup on Monday 21 January.

The tie will kick off at 19:00 GMT and entry at Leigh Sports Village will be free to all supporters.

Neil Ryan’s side reached this stage of the competition after knocking out holders Chelsea last month, as Mason Greenwood scored a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-3 win for the young Reds.

The club’s Head of Academy, Nicky Butt, recently spoke of the importance of the FA Youth Cup in an interview with United Review after that outstanding victory over Chelsea on 17 December.

“The FA Youth Cup is massive, going back to the Busby Babes and when we won it in 1992,” said Butt.

“Several other groups won it – like Paul Pogba’s team, who did it in 2011. It’s a big tournament but let’s not get carried away.”

Nicky went on: “We’ve only won one game, albeit a tough game, and, in the changing room afterwards, Neil said we’re not just here to beat Chelsea but to win it [the FA Youth Cup].

“There is a lot of work to do but it’s a massive competition for the club.”

Brighton will visit Leigh Sports Village after beating West Ham United 5-4 on penalties away from home in the third round, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The Youth Cup tie comes just two days after the clubs meet at senior level, in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

UNDER-18S: STOKE 1 UNITED 4

Manchester United’s Under-18s secured a fine victory over Stoke City at Clayton Wood on Tuesday afternoon.

This was the youngsters' first league fixture in almost two months, but we were soon back into our stride with two goals from Mason Greenwood and one apiece for D’Mani Mellor and captain Brandon Williams.

The sun was shining in the Potteries and the conditions were almost perfect for this Under-18 Premier League North clash. Despite this being a normal working day and a 13:00 GMT kick-off, there was a decent turn-out which included scouts from various clubs and a small battalion of Stoke’s backroom staff.

United head coach Neil Ryan was forced to make an early change to his line-up when Arnau Puigmal suffered a back injury and was replaced by Anthony Elanga. Ethan Galbraith, who started on the right wing, dropped back into Puigmal’s full-back spot with Elanga joining the fray in midfield.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action during the opening exchanges but, in the 13th minute, an inch perfect through ball form Dylan Levitt sent Greenwood racing towards goal and, within seconds, he had swept past goalkeeper Nathan Broome before shooting into an unguarded net. United, in all blue to avoid a clash with the Potters’ red and white stripes, weren’t having it all our own way and only resolute defending prevented the home side from claiming an equaliser.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, United very nearly increased the lead but Mellor was denied when his shot brought an excellent save from Broome. Keeper Broome was Stoke’s saviour again, in the 36th minute, when he made a spectacular one-handed save to stop Greenwood’s arrowing free-kick. The Reds were enjoying a good spell as half-time loomed and, but for Broome and his defenders, Elanga would surely have added his name to the scoresheet.

Eight minutes into the second half, United doubled the lead courtesy of Levitt and Greenwood once again. Welshman Levitt provided another terrific pass and Greenwood, in his first outing since being part of the training camp in Dubai, completed the task with a close-range finish.

Stoke winger Abdoulaye Toure must have been cursing his luck after seeing one fierce drive rattle the crossbar and another fly narrowly over James Thompson’s goal. However, the Reds were assured of claiming an eighth win in 11 league games when, in the space of five minutes, we added goals from Mellor and skipper Williams. Forward Mellor finished off a move involving Williams and Aliou Traore before Williams got in on the act himself with a thumping finish.

Stoke grabbed a goal back in the 81st minute, through striker Ethon Varian, but victory was already safely in the bag for United.

United: Thompson; Puigmal (Elanga 5 (McGhee 76)), Mengi, Bernard, B. Williams; Traore, Garner, Levitt; Galbraith, Mellor (Ramazani 76), Greenwood.

Substitutes not used: Carney, McCann.

Scorers: Varian 81 | Greenwood 13,53 Mellor 67, B. Williams 72

UNITED'S UNDER-18S STAGE COMEBACK WIN AT LIVERPOOL

Manchester United’s Under-18s produced an excellent team performance to come from two goals down against Liverpool and earn a victory from Saturday's Premier League Cup quarter final.

Under-18s boss Neil Ryan will presumably be delighted by the effort and togetherness that his young side showed, in difficult circumstances, which will surely benefit their progression this season.

The tie needed a period of extra time to separate the teams after 90 minutes produced an entertaining 2-2 draw, and our young Reds prevailed after digging deep to achieve the result.

Liverpool had led by two goals following first-half strikes from Paul Glatzel and Bobby Duncan, but a red card for Morgan Boyes led to Mason Greenwood and Teden Mengi striking back in the second half, before the former scored his second free-kick of the tie to claim the win in extra time.

It was surprisingly mild at the Kirkby training complex when the teams lined up for kick-off, with Liverpool in their distinctive all-red kit and United wearing the blue third strip.

Needless to say that both teams were all set for this contest. After all, this is Liverpool against Manchester United and it was clear to see from the outset that this was going to be a typically hard-fought game with no quarter given or expected.

There was little in the way of real chances until the 13th minute when Largie Ramazani unleashed a blistering shot that would surely have found the top corner of the Liverpool net but for goalkeeper Vitezslav Joros’s fine save.

That was a sign of things to come for over the next half-hour or so it was both goalkeepers who took centre stage. James Thompson made a string of great saves to deny Liverpool skipper Glatzel and stopper Joros was equally hard to beat, as Anthony Elanga found in the 34th minute.

Openings were certainly being made, but three minutes before half time it was the home team made the breakthrough when Glatzel was fouled inside the box by United defender Mengi. Referee Jonathan Maskery awarded the penaty and Glatzel’s well-struck shot was blocked by Thompson, but the penalty-taker followed up to slide the ball into the net on the rebound.

Glatzel was also instrumental as Liverpool doubled their lead at the start of the second half when he crossed to the far post for Duncan to execute a simple tap in.

Three minutes later and United were thrown a lifeline when Liverpool defender Boyes was sent-off following a clumsy challenge on Ramazani.

The ensuing free-kick on the edge of the area was lashed home by Greenwood to his side back in the picture.

United were level with 14 minutes remaining after Mengi’s header was diverted into the net by Di’shon Bernard.

Neil Ryan’s lads dominated the latter stages as Liverpool, suffering from being a man down, began to tire but there were no further goals so the game moved into extra-time.

United continued to hold the upper hand and, moments before the end of the first half of extra-time, Greenwood worked his magic again by executing another fabulous free-kick.

There was unfortunately a distressing ending for D’mani Mellor, who was taken from the field on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance after receiving lengthy treatment from medical staff.

UNDER-18S HANDED SEMI-FINAL DERBY DATE

There will be a Manchester derby in the semi-finals of the Under-18 Premier League Cup.

The game is a one-off, with extra-time and penalties if required.

The other last-four tie is between Championship clubs Middlesbrough and Derby County.

Neil Ryan’s boys qualified for this stage with a superb 3-2 win at Liverpool last weekend, as Mason Greenwood scored two free-kicks.

The Reds drew 3-3 with City in November at the Aon Training Complex and are due to meet them again in the league at the Academy Stadium on 13 April.

Chelsea are the current holders of the Premier League Cup, after beating London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the inaugural competition last season.

UNDER-18S BEATEN BY MIDDLESBROUGH

A much-changed Manchester United suffered only a second defeat of the season in the Under-18 Premier League North as a strong Middlesbrough team emerged victorious at the Aon Training Complex.

All three of the visitors' goals were scored in the second half as Boro, who also won the reverse fixture on Teesside in October, are the only team to beat the Reds at this level this season.

It was also the first time that Neil Ryan’s team had failed to find the net in a match this term, but it wasn’t for the want of trying as the lads created chances and hit the post twice.

The young Reds were back in league action after their heroics in coming from two goals down to clinch an impressive 3-2 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League Cup seven days earlier on Merseyside.

There was a new look to the team which showed six changes from the comeback win over Liverpool last weekend, with Lukasz Beijer making only his second appearance at this level and Connor Stanley only his second start.

The opportunity also presented itself for 16-year-old midfielder Anthony Elanga to experience a more advanced role of spearheading the attack in a line-up in which James Thompson and Arnau Puigmal were the most senior players. Di’Shon Bernard, Brandon Williams, James Garner, Dylan Levitt and Mason Greenwood all played for the Under-23s against Southampton on Friday night.

The Aon Training Complex provided a wintry backdrop for this game against Boro, with snow carpeting most of the pitches except those of the Under-16s and Under-18s. However, there was a virtually clear blue sky and beaming sun over Carrington as the game kicked off at 12:30 GMT.

This was our Under-18s' 12th league game of the season and the players didn’t need to be told that the only team to get the better of them this season was Boro, who claimed three points with a 3-1 win on Teesside in early September.

So the scene was set and it soon became clear that Mark Tinkler's side were once again going to be tough nut for United to crack.

Neither side could really claim to have dominated a goalless first half, with both teams getting their fair share of possession, while clear-cut chances were at a premium.

The two goalkeepers weren’t, by any stretch of the imagination, overworked during the opening period, but both United’s James Thompson and Boro’s Sol Brynn were more than competent when called upon. Largie Ramazani was unlucky on two occasions while Boro’s Gabby McGill was thwarted by a rapid reaction save from Thompson.

United opened the second half showing more urgency and mobility. Barely a couple of minutes had elapsed when Elanga looked certain to score until the ball struck Boro defender Nicholas Hood and flew agonisingly over the crossbar. At the other end, McGill was disappointed to see his low shot just fail to find its intended destination.

Boro eased their way back into the action as the second half warmed up, but still it was the defences who were continuing to hold firm. That was until the 62nd minute when the visitors took the lead thanks to McGill’s conversion of a penalty award after he had been fouled by Teden Mengi, who wore the captain's armband for the day.

United needed to summon the same character shown against Liverpool last time out to come from behind and, with 20 minutes remaining, the lads appeared to have done just that. Full-back Arnau Puigmal moved up-field to provide Ramazani with an inviting pass inside the Boro penalty area, but the winger saw his shot agonisingly come back off the inside of the post before bouncing back out.

The Reds went close on numerous occasions to getting on the scoresheet as Puigmal, who scored against Boro earlier in the season, saw a fine free-kick well saved by Brynn, who also kept out Dion McGhee before Ramazani hit the outside of the post with a fierce shot from a tight angle.

But United were then stunned by two goals in the space of four minutes from Boro, as Alberto Balde rounded the keeper to slot home before McGill headed in a left-wing cross for his second of the afternoon.

Despite the result, it was a good education and learning curve for the young Reds against a strong Middlesbrough team as coach Ryan looks to bed in a number of new players.

UNDER-18S SECURE DESERVED WIN AT EVERTON

Manchester United's Under-18s earned three points with a late penalty by Dylan Levitt enough to overcome Everton at Finch Farm.

The Reds welcomed back several players who represented the Under-23s in last Friday's game against Southampton for a tough test against the table-topping Merseysiders, following the loss to Middlesbrough at the weekend.

It was always expected to be a battle with the Blues and so it proved, but Levitt kept his composure to score from the spot in the closing stages after Neil Ryan's side had been frustrated by the woodwork on three occasions.

It was no more than United deserved after dominating the second half against a Toffees side that was forced to play almost two-thirds of the game with only 10 players after defender Josh Hosie was sent off for two yellow-card offences - fouls on Largie Ramazani and Brandon Williams as they made tracks down the Reds' left-hand side.

Everton’s Academy and training centre near Halewood is a splendid facility but, on a February evening during a cold snap, it can feel a trifle chilly with the wind gusting across both the major waterways of the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal.

However, the conditions didn’t prevent both teams from starting this game at an impressive pace. It would have been virtually impossible to have put a credit card between them during the opening stages as the game swung relentlessly from one end of the field to the other. United goalkeeper James Thompson was once again in fine form, getting in front of everything the league leaders could throw at him. While, at the other end United, went agonisingly close to making the breakthrough twice in the space of two minutes.

Einar Iversen cannoned an attempted clearance against his own bar and Aliou Traore was just as close when a slick move culminated in Anthony Elanga knocking the ball into his path but the Frenchman's effort took a deflection and looped up against the woodwork.

Mason Greenwood, back in the fold following his outing with the Under-23s last week, started quietly but then twice, in quick succession, he was within an ace of finding a route through the Toffees’ defence.

The second half was pretty much one-way traffic with United probing and searching for an opening against a resilient rearguard. A rare break enabled Ellis Simms to force a good stop out of United keeper James Thompson but the pressure continued to mount at the other end.

An electrifying run by Elanga teed up Mason Greenwood for a glorious chance but, again, the woodwork came to the Toffees' rescue as the top scorer's finish from the edge of the six-yard box hit the bar.

Five minutes into the second half, United looked certain to open the scoring after Greenwood slalomed his way into the Everton area before despatching the ball across the face of the goal. Defenders Di'Shon Bernard and Teden Mengi had joined the attack and both had attempts on goal blocked close to the line. Although Ellis Simms forced a good stop out of Thompson on a rare break, on the hour, United went even closer to finding the net when Ramazani skied the ball over the bar after taking a fine ball from skipper Williams.
As rain poured from the sky, the Reds kept pressing forward looking for the all-important opening but chances continued to come and go. Levitt, Elanga and Traore were all unlucky as United piled on the pressure against Everton’s 10 men and, just when it seemed that the deadlock would remain, Greenwood was floored inside the box by Michael Collins and Levitt calmly converted the penalty to secure a narrow but richly deserved victory.

Everton remain top of the Under-18 Premier League North, with United in fourth spot, but the Reds are only two points adrift with a game in hand.
