Match Pack: Stoke

United's Boxing Day win at Stoke last season was one of the key results of the campaign, as it was the first following the Reds' return from Japan. Carlos Tevez scored a late winner in a tight game, and the Potters will provide just as stern a test this time round…

Form guide
Stoke defied the critics by surviving their inaugural Premier League season with a relative degree of comfort, and they have made an encouraging start to this season to suggest there will be more of the same. They continued their renowned home form from last season with an opening-day victory over newcomers Burnley, but were humbled in the following midweek game by a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool. A 0-0 stalemate with Birmingham followed, before a 1-0 win over Sunderland to propel the Potters up the table. They came within seconds of holding Chelsea to a draw at the Britannia Stadium, but were denied a point when Florent Malouda popped up with a last-gasp winner. Another late goal conceded against Bolton last weekend prevented Stoke from obtaining a third league victory, and they now lie 10th in the table. They have also made steady progress in the Carling Cup, disposing of Leyton Orient and Blackpool in the second and third rounds respectively.

Ins and outs

The Potters look to set to be without fans' favourite Abdoulaye Faye (back), while both Ricardo Fuller (groin) and James Beattie (ankle) are touch and go – the latter having suffered a reaction on his return to action in the midweek Carling Cup win over Blackpool. Having rested a number of players for that game, Stoke are otherwise set to be at full strength. There are no fresh injury worries for United following the win against Wolves on Wednesday, when Sir Alex Ferguson gave several of his stars a well-earned rest. Ben Foster will replace Tomasz Kuszczak in goal with Edwin van der Sar still three weeks away from full fitness, but Fabio misses out after his midweek dismissal. Ritchie de Laet will hope to face his former employers. Rafael (shoulder), Gabriel Obertan (back) and Owen Hargreaves (knee) make up the other absentees, while Paul Scholes may return to Premier League action after missing the Manchester derby last Sunday through suspension.

Manager
Tony Pulis is enjoying his second spell at Stoke and his time there is certainly proving to be fruitful. Having taken the Potters up automatically in 2008, he led his side to a 12th-place finish in their first Premier League season. He has created a solid outfit who are very hard to break down, and deadly at set-pieces. He has added a bit of flair to the squad this year by signing players such as Turkey international Tuncay.

Star man
Big things were expected of Dave Kitson when he became Stoke's first-ever Premier League signing in the summer of 2008, joining for £5.5million from Reading, for whom he had scored 54 goals in 111 appearances. However, the rangy striker failed to find the net in a difficult first season with the Potters and was even loaned back to the Royals. But this term he has found his feet and is Stoke's leading scorer with three goals already.

Referee
Howard Webb's already taken charge of one United game this season, and it was a good one – the 5-0 win at Wigan last month. Tottenham were bemused when the official failed to award them a penalty at Chelsea last weekend after Robbie Keane had gone down under Ricardo Carvalho's challenge. Webb presided over six United games in 2008/09 (four wins, two defeats) and has issued 13 yellow cards in his five games so far this term.

Rivals watch
Liverpool host Hull on Saturday as they look to continue their improved recent form. Chelsea also play at the same time as United when they travel to Wigan looking to extend their perfect start to the season. Arsenal kick off on Saturday evening against Fulham at Craven Cottage, while Manchester City have to wait until Monday to host West Ham.

Foster to start at Stoke

Ben Foster will start for United against Stoke City as the Reds will be without Edwin van der Sar for a further three weeks.

Tomasz Kuszczak impressed between the sticks against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, but Foster keeps his place for league duty against his former club.

Van der Sar, who suffered a broken hand in pre-season, isn't expected back until mid-October.

"Edwin is still three weeks away," confirmed Sir Alex at his Friday press conference. "It was a good opportunity for Tomasz to play on Wednesday, but Ben will play against Stoke."

The boss also confirmed that there were no fresh injury concerns from Wednesday night and all the players who played in the 4-3 derby victory over Manchester City are in contention for selection this weekend.

Sir Alex revealed his respect for the work Tony Pulis is doing at Stoke and says that the trip to the Britannia Stadium will be tricky.

"Stoke have a good home record, and I'm not surprised how they've started the season at all," he said. "They're a club on the up and they're going to be a force this season."
