The Libertines, Eric Cantona To Play London Charity Show

Now here's something we never thought we'd say: The Libertines and Eric Cantona are set to play a London charity show.

The one off show takes place at the Roundhouse on June 4th, with all proceeds being donated to the British children's charity HOPING.

The Libertines will perform a headline set, while the bill also includes the legendary Patti Smith and South London's own Loyle Carner.

Curiously, Eric Cantona is also on the bill - the iconic French footballer will perform his poetry, while Frankie Boyle is also set to do some readings.

Bella Freud, co-founder of the HOPING Foundation said: “With these outstanding rockers and artists, performing for HOPING at the Roundhouse on June 4th, - giving their time and their talent- we are able to raise awareness for the Palestinian refugee children we support, and hold in our hearts.”

Tickets for the event will be available on Tuesday (May 15th) at midday through the Roundhouse website.

Eric Cantona appeared at a benefit concert for Palestine last night, alongside the likes of The Libertines and Patti Smith. Check out photos and footage below.

Held to raise money and awareness for Palestinian children living in refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza, the night, organised by British children’s charity HOPING and also featured host John Bishop, Frankie Boyle, Thurston Moore and Loyle Carner.

Football legend Eric Cantona also took to the stage, where he read the poem ‘Enemy Of The Sun’.

With Carl Barat among those who lent their support to the #ArtistsForPalestine campaign calling for a boycott of Israel after recent violent clashes with Palestinian protestors, The Libertines headlined the evening with a typically rowdy set of fan favourites from across their three albums – but no new numbers.

Following her glorious set at All Points East Presents 2018 at the weekend with Nick Cave, Patti Smith took to the legendary Roundhouse stage for a short but impassioned and politically-charged set of classics.

“Some people say that this song is old fashioned and romantic,” said Smith, introducing closing track ‘People Have The Power’, “but I’m at bliss to say that if we the people gather together nobly, if our young people do what they did in Parkland, and start taking to the streets by the hundreds of thousands, by the millions, you would see, that there’s nothing stupid or old-fashioned about people gathering together and making change.

The recent #ArtistsForPalestine campaign was spearheaded online by Wolf Alice.

“The situation has affected all of us. It’s affected us seeing what has happened in recent years”, bassist Joff Oddie told NME.

Backing calls for musical acts to boycott Israel, he said: “You have to listen, you have to listen to the minorities that are being afflicted in those situations to see what they want and they’re calling for a boycott, so we choose to support that.

“I trust the movement, it’s got strong goals and that’s definitely a part of it. You have to put social and economic pressure on the state of Israel to change.”

Speaking to NME about their long-awaited new album, Libertines bassist Gary Powell told NME earlier this year: ““Peter is constantly writing, that’s what he does. He’s been writing some poetry with a girl in Margate and recording with some other people down there. I’ve been writing some stuff. John sent some stuff over a couple of weeks ago that was great too. Carl is always proactive regarding everything he does.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on, we just need to finally get back together, so we can actually figure out what direction we’re going in. It shouldn’t be that difficult, because we approach everything from the point of view of The Libertines. We just need to make sure we push everything in that direction.”

Alongside a run of huge summer festival shows, The Libertines will perform at London’s Royal Festival Hall as part of Robert Smith’s Meltdown on Sunday June 17.

Eurosport commissions original Eric Cantona World Cup series - The King’s Road

He is the King yet-to-be-overthrown and now fans across Europe can watch former Manchester United icon Eric Cantona as he embarks on a unique journey exploring the deep-rooted relationship between football and society in new original Eurosport series, The King’s Road.

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, the exclusive three-part documentary will take fans on a journey of a football lifetime. Through every person he meets, every place he visits, Cantona will tell the story behind the passion – beyond the 90 minutes – that makes football the most popular game in the world.

Cantona kicks-off his voyage in Iceland, a country that will compete at its first ever World Cup this summer. The King rubs shoulders with the country’s President and Iceland’s biggest fan, the current World’s Strongest Man title-holder, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who is also known for playing Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane role in popular TV show, Game of Thrones.



In episode two, Eric heads to Africa for a memorable trip to Senegal, the country which caused one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history in 2002 when they defeated the defending champions, France. Cantona meets Senegal’s greatest football star, El Hadji Diouf, and world-renowned Senegalese singer songwriter, Youssou N'Dour, to better understand why Senegal has not performed better on the world stage since it’s breakthrough at the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

Cantona completes his journey in Peru, a team whose iconic red striped jersey captured his imagination in his youth. This year they’ll be competing in their first World Cup for 36 years and The King wants to know how a country so passionate about football has missed the sport’s greatest competition and celebration for so long. He meets legendary former players, current administrators and a shaman in his quest to understand what lays ahead for Peruvian football.



The King’s Road premieres across Eurosport’s channels and digital platforms on Thursday June 7 at 10.30 (UK time) with all three episodes running back-to-back on Eurosport 1*. The episodes will be simulcast on Eurosport digital platforms with the full series available on-demand on the Eurosport Player, via eurosport.com and the integrated Eurosport app.

Eric Cantona is excited to take fans on his voyage, exploring the bond between football and society in three of the nation’s preparing for this summer’s World Cup.

" In Senegal, kids and grown men are playing football everywhere; streets, beaches, vacant lots. Barefoot, in soccer boots, sneakers, or flip-flops. That’s the way I love our sport: when pleasure rules everything and scores are forgotten in a matter of minutes."

“The final episode focuses on Peru. My first memories of the country are from the sticker albums that I used to fill before the World Cup: the jersey with a red stripe across the chest. I want to understand how a country so passionate about football could miss the sport’s greatest competition and celebration for 36 years?”

Eric Cantona has been synonymous with Eurosport since assuming the role as the self-appointed Commissioner of Football during the European Championships in France two years ago.
