Default Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Liverpool

PREVIEW : MANCHESTER UNITED V LIVERPOOL

Scene-setter: After losing 2-0 in last Thursday’s first leg at Anfield, United must win by at least three goals in order to progress to the quarter-finals. A 2-0 win would send the tie into extra-time with the possibility of penalties looming large, though a single away goal for Liverpool would be disastrous.

Form guide: Louis van Gaal’s men drew 1-1 with West Ham in the Emirates FA Cup sixth round on Sunday thanks to Anthony Martial’s equaliser, which brought an end to a run of consecutive defeats in all competitions. Although the Reds were beaten by Liverpool last week, fans can draw confidence from our four preceding wins over the Merseysiders in the Barclays Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp's side recently lost the Capital One Cup final to Manchester City but that penalty shootout defeat at Wembley appears to have galvanised them, given that they have since chalked up three consecutive wins in all competitions - including a comfortable 3-0 success over the Blues in the league.

Latest team news: Bastian Schweinsteiger returned from injury as a substitute against West Ham at the weekend and the German may come back into the starting XI on Thursday. Jesse Lingard missed the first leg through suspension and is now expected to feature, but Wayne Rooney will not be involved after telling reporters that he won’t return from injury until after the international break. Luke Shaw, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Will Keane are all still missing.

View from the dressing room: “We need to have a good start on Thursday, with intensity. It's like a final for us. We need a comeback and I'm sure that the atmosphere in Old Trafford will take us closer to that goal. I'm sure it's possible.” – Juan Mata

Legend's view: "We can’t afford to concede and we need to show the intent to get at them. The atmosphere will be key – we need to build one inside the stadium and I’m sure we will because, whenever United play Liverpool, it’s always a great atmosphere. Hopefully we can do that and it will make Liverpool a bit nervous." - Gary Pallister

Opposition manager: Klopp refused to get carried away after his side earned a clear advantage in the first leg and has remained calm ahead of Thursday’s return. “It was good, from the first second to the last second, with only a few minutes in the second half when we lost control,” he said. “2-0 is a perfect result. We would have liked to have won by more clearly, but there is nothing to criticise. As a human being, I could really celebrate and say it is the best and greatest ever but I don’t want to set a limit for them, I don’t know how strong they can be. We are in a good position now and want to go to the next round but for this, we have to play like this again.”

Danger man: Daniel Sturridge’s return to fitness is undoubtedly of great importance to Liverpool’s cause, yet the England international would struggle to score goals without the creativity of diminutive playmaker Coutinho. The talisman has even won the approval of Brazil legend Pele, who recently told LFC TV: “Our country has many brilliant players in Europe. There are other good young Brazilians in Europe at the moment but they don’t have Philippe’s experience. He grew up in Europe, moving to Italy when he was just 17 or 18 – so he’s a more experienced player already.”

Sub-plots: It is currently 3-3 between Louis van Gaal and Jurgen Klopp in a rivalry that began in Germany when they were in charge of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively. Both earned two Bundesliga wins each, before notching a further win each with United and Liverpool this season.

Manchester United can call on spirit of '84, says Bryan Robson as they bid to overturn Europa League deficit against Liverpool

* Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford in Europa League
* Louis van Gaal's side are 2-0 down from the first leg of the last-16 tie
* Manchester United overturned a two-goal lead against Barcelona in 1984
* A 3-0 win at Old Trafford saw United into semi-finals of Cup Winners' Cup
* Bryan Robson says current side can produce similar feat against Liverpool

In the aftermath of one of the greatest comebacks Old Trafford has ever seen, Manchester United’s hero of the hour Bryan Robson received an unexpected phone call from his England team-mate Trevor Francis.

‘Trevor was with Sampdoria and they were playing in Europe the next night,’ recalls Robson. ‘They were all in a hotel watching our game and Trevor said he had to phone me because every single one of their players said our lot were on drugs!

‘That was because of the energy we put into the game. It’s one of the things that always amused me about that night.’

Robson scored twice as United overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg in the Cup Winners' Cup

March 21, 1984. United had just confounded the odds by over-turning a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Barcelona to reach the semi-finals of the old European Cup-Winners’ Cup.

A Barca team featuring a young Diego Maradona, Bernd Schuster and seven Spanish internationals were over-run 3-0 at a delirious Old Trafford as Robson scored twice to level the tie on aggregate and Frank Stapleton grabbed a decisive third for United.

At the final whistle, an exhausted Robson was carried shoulder high on the pitch by fans and had to battle through hundreds more just to reach the dressing room.

‘When you are absolutely shattered, because I was, they drained me even more,’ says Robson. ‘You just can’t get your breath when they are all around you like that.

Robson (right) appears alongside Denis Law (centre) at the launch of a partnership between United and Gulf Oil

‘That was the best atmosphere inside Old Trafford that I’ve witnessed. It was a great night to come back against a top team like Barcelona and beat them 3-0.’

The 32nd anniversary of that remarkable game falls next week, and United’s Captain Marvel believes it will take another superhuman effort — and another raucous occasion under the Old Trafford floodlights — on Thursday night for Louis van Gaal’s side to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit against Liverpool and progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

It would, he says, be United’s greatest ever victory over their bitter rivals if they can pull it off.

‘It would be and we did it against Barcelona, so it shows it’s possible,’ says Robson, who enjoyed many great battles against the Merseysiders.

‘Everything has got to go right for you. The records show that when a team takes a 2-0 lead into a game, whether it’s away from home or not, it’s very difficult to pull that back.

How the quarter-final tie of the 1984 Cup Winners' Cup against Barcelona unfolded

‘That’s going to be a tough ask for the players, but it can be done.

‘I think what they’ve got to do is concentrate on getting it back to 2-2. Don’t be thinking you’ve got to win the game 3-0 right from the off. And if the match has got to go into extra time, so be it.

‘That’s the best way for the boys to go into the game.

‘You’ve got to go for it, but you don’t want to be allowing Liverpool to score because then that would be the end of the game.

‘Everybody said it was a real poor performance in the first leg. Liverpool outworked us. They outfought us. Our passing game just wasn’t there.

Robson was the hero in 1984 with two goals at Old Trafford to draw United level in the tie

‘We didn’t do anything well. All you can say is it’s got to improve.

‘For us to turn it round, everything has got to be in our favour. We’ve got to have that little bit of good fortune and all our better players on top form.

‘The fans have always got a part to play. If they get right behind the team, players respond to that.

‘Big players love a great atmosphere, especially on your home soil. If you get that atmosphere going and we get an early goal, then it can be done.’

Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney hopeful ahead of Europa League: 'Liverpool will be tough but two goals is doable'

* Manchester United's Wayne Rooney believes Europa League comeback is more than doable
* The 30-year-old conceded arch-rivals Liverpool are a tough side to beat
* Rooney is also hopeful he can win his fitness battle before end of season

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is adamant their Europa League quest isn't over despite the two-goal deficit they face against Liverpool.

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino put Jurgen Klopp's side in the ascendency in the first leg of the last-16 clash.

Speaking to The Mirror, Rooney believes his side can overcome the aggregate disadvantage but conceded it's a testing task.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney (centre) is hopeful his side can comeback against Liverpool

He said: 'Liverpool is going to be tough but two goals is doable. We have good players and the first goal will be important. If we get that, then we will be back in the game.'

Rooney will miss the second leg at Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal's side aim to put their current on-field problems aside.

But the England striker is hopeful he'll soon be putting his injury woes behind him.

'It is going as planned. I don't know when for definite when I'll be back, but it will be after the international break,' he added.

'I am hoping, depending on the two cups we are still in, there could be 10 games left for United, plus the England games, so I do no think that would be a worry.'

16/03/2016 15:39, Report by Mark Froggatt
INJURY UPDATE ON SCHWEINSTEIGER, YOUNG AND BORTHWICK-JACKSON

After confirming Bastian will not start on Thursday, the boss went on to state that Ashley Young and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will not be involved in his squad to face Liverpool, despite both players returning to training from injury. Antonio Valencia is also not ready, despite featuring for the Under-21s last week.

"They are training now with us but you have to build up more than only one training session or two training sessions," he told MUTV. "For example, Young and Valencia are out for a few months so it is not so easy to come back and that you can adapt to the rhythm of this level.

"Yeah [it's too early for them]. Too early also for Schweinsteiger [to start]. He has played two times 10 or 15 minutes, maybe he can play 45 minutes or 30 minutes dependable on the situation also on the pitch. I cannot say in advance but I try to do that of course. His impact was very big in the last game versus West Ham United and he was involved in the goal, I think. But, yeah, I have to cope with the fact when they're injured, they're not back at the moment they train one training session with you."

Luke Shaw, Phil Jones, Will Keane are Wayne Rooney are still long-term absentees for United, although the latter has revealed this week that he hopes to return after the upcoming international break.

At his press conference, the manager added: "Ashley Young has been two months away but Borthwick-Jackson is another case. He has been about three weeks away so that is different.

"For every player, it is difficult after an injury to come back in the team and I give always the example of Marcos Rojo, who was the exception because I didn't have other full-backs so I forced him to build up his capacity in the first team.

"He struggled, as you have seen, and I have given him 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 50 minutes, 70 minutes and then, at the end, 90 minutes, but he is now very tired yet he has to play maybe tomorrow. It is not easy for someone who has been out and maybe operated, so it is also a big transition for these kind of players.

"It is the same thing with Luke Shaw and with Wayne Rooney when he is coming back as he has already for three weeks [been in] a brace. You have to wait and see in the training sessions if he has that confidence to play a game or 20 minutes and that is difficult."
