Who is Andrea Berta? The latest figure linked with Manchester United director of football role

Manchester United's search for a director of football continues and we've profiled the latest reported candidate.

Manchester United’s ongoing hunt for a director of football saw Andrea Berta’s name emerge as a candidate this week.

The Italian, 46, holds an identical role at Atlético Madrid and has been reported as being a contender for the position alongside Roma’s Monchi and Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici.

United’s search for a suitable candidate to form part of a restructure has come after United boss Jose Mourinho was left exasperated by the club’s transfer activity in the summer.

Mourinho was thought to have highlighted defensive reinforcements as his priority in the summer market but he was left with midfielder Fred, full-back Diogo Dalot and reserve goalkeeper Lee Grant as his only new recruits.

Former United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, who works as Ajax’s chief executive, ruled himself out of the running for the role.

“I have a two-year contract. Ajax is my club and I would like to stay longer,” he said.

Who is Andrea Berta?

Born in Lombardy, Italy, Andrea Berta was a banker by trade before becoming sporting director at the now-dissolved Italian side AC Carpendolo. The chance of a career change was given to him at the age of 30 by the cousin of former Italy coach, Cesare Prandelli, and his attention to detail impressed during his four-year spell at the lower-league outfit.

“Once, he told us that he had gone to South America and had been on ten fights in ten days to watch 25 players,” Carpendolo president Francesco Malpezzi later said.

It didn’t go unnoticed higher up the Italian pyramid, either, with Parma acquiring his services in 2007. Berta, who has a wife, Miriam, and a daughter, Paola, spent two years with the two-time UEFA Cup winners before becoming Genoa’s sporting director in 2009.

Three years later came his big break, when former United chief executive Peter Kenyon - who was acting as a financial director for Atlético Madrid at the time - recommended Berta's services to club president Enrique Cerezo.

Berta was initially used as a scout for the La Liga outfit but soon became more influential at the Vicente Calderón. He was credited for scouting and securing the subsequent deal for Antoine Griezmann, as well as developing a strong relationship with the agent Jorge Mendes. Mendes clients Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa came and went - and returned again, in Costa’s case - on Berta’s watch.

Berta’s success at the club was officially recognised in 2017 when he replaced José Caminero as sporting director, after PSG had offered him a reported €14 million annual salary to fulfil the role at the Ligue 1 giants.

What has he achieved at Atlético Madrid?

Perhaps Berta’s major success at Atlético, even more than overseeing the league title win in 2014 and Champions League final appearances in 2014 and 2016, has been keeping Diego Simeone in his position as manager at the club.

Simeone and Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil became increasingly estranged and were at loggerheads to the extent that Spanish press termed their relationship an ‘imminent divorce’ as it looked as though Simeone would leave the club.

But Berta acted as the pair’s go-between and smoothed over relations enough for Simeone to sign a new deal at the club in 2017, as Los Colchoneros moved into their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

Does he have existing links with Manchester United?

Berta saw Atlético chief scout Gerardo Guzman prised from his armoury when Mourinho took over at Old Trafford in 2016. Guzman has been United’s Spain scout during the Portuguese’s tenure.

His close ties with Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s agent, are well known.

Manchester United 'look to Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta' to fill new director of football role after he masterminded Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak moves

* Manchester United eye Andrea Berta as a leading director of football candidate
* Chief executive Ed Woodward is currently planning major changes at the club
* He wants a director of football appointed for the first time to help with transfers

Manchester United have identified Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta as a leading candidate to be their first director of football.

Chief executive Ed Woodward is planning a major restructuring of the club's football operations behind the scenes.

That includes hiring a director of football for the first time, who can work closely with the manager in identifying and recruiting transfer targets.

Andrea Berta is a leading candidate to be Manchester United's new director of football. Berta helped mastermind the signing of Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid

Atletico's Italian chief Berta tops the list, with Juventus' Fabio Paratici and former Tottenham transfer guru Paul Mitchell also on their radar, according to the Evening Standard.

They claim United have already registered their interest as they aim to make an appointment by the end of the year.

Berta was hired as Atletico's sporting director just last year but has been part of the recruitment team since joining from Genoa in 2013.

He helped mastermind the signings of Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak.

The director also brought striker Diego Costa back to Madrid from Chelsea and has managed to secure Griezmann and Diego Godin - who was a deadline-day target for United - down to long-term deals.

Berta was originally linked with United when Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal in 2016, in what was considered a dream scenario.

But Woodward himself opted to be hands on when it came to recruitment and it is clear that despite resisting initially, there is a desire to bring a dedicated person in.

Juventus director Fabio Paratici is another big name that appeals to Woodward and United

Failings in the last transfer window, namely to sanction a move for England and Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, has seen Woodward and Mourinho at odds.

The appeal of Juve's Paratici is the breadth and creativity of his signings in recent summers.

United, who will face the Italian champions in this season's Champions League, have long admired Juve's recruitment policy with Leonardo Bonucci, Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and namely Cristiano Ronaldo heading to Turin under Paratici's watch.

Beppe Marotta dipastikan tidak memperpanjang kontraknya di Juventus yang habis 25 Oktober. Isu opsi2 perkerjaan berikutnya antara lain Barcelona dan United.

Klo bener bakal masuk United sih artinya keputusan terkait Mou bakal nunggu dia. Jadi ya posisi Mou bakal aman setidaknya beberapa minggu kedepan.

'Any link with a club of that size, history and status is very flattering': Tottenham's ex-head of recruitment Paul Mitchell left 'flattered' to be in the frame to become Manchester United's first ever director of football

* RB Leipzig head of recruitment Paul Mitchell has been linked with a move
* He is 'flattered' to be in the frame to be Manchester United's director of football
* United want an individual brought in to help out chief executive Ed Woodward
* Mitchell impressed under Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and Tottenham

Former Tottenham head of recruitment Paul Mitchell admits he is 'flattered' to be in the frame for a move to become Manchester United's first director of football.

The club have made no secret of their desires to bring someone to Old Trafford to help out chief executive Ed Woodward with the recruitment process.

Mitchell currently works for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig but given the 37-year-old is a 'Manchester boy', he is emerging as a strong candidate for the United position.

RB Leipzig head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is 'flattered' by links of a move to Man United. United are said to be keen on Mitchell to become the club's first ever director of football

Speaking to the Sun, he said: 'Manchester United are recognised for being one of the biggest clubs in the world.

'So any link with a club of that size, history and status is very flattering and I am a Manchester boy. There hasn't been any contact with United at this moment, for me it's always about focusing on the job in hand.

'I'm more than aware I work for a great organisation, but then like always you never know in football what can happen in the future.'

Jose Mourinho was exasperated in the summer with transfers and the club want to help him. Mitchell has been hailed for finding stars such as Sadio Mane, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier

United boss Jose Mourinho was left exasperated in the summer after missing out on a number of key targets.

The Portuguese was desperately seeking defensive reinforcements with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Leonardo Bonucci and Diego Godin all are on the radar, only for none to make the switch.

Mitchell has developed a reputation as one of the best talent-spotters in Europe, playing lead roles in discovering the likes of Sadio Mane while at Southampton and Dele Alli in his Tottenham days.

Mitchell is a former player, having enjoyed spells with Wigan Athletic and MK Dons, before he took up a role as head of recruitment with the Dons in 2010.

United chief executive Ed Woodward has so far been tasked with signing players for managers. Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta (right) has also been mooted as another potential candidate

His work there earned him a move to Southampton at the age of just 30 before he followed Pochettino to Spurs in 2014.

He played an integral part in the signings of Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld among others before spurning advances from elsewhere in the Premier League to try his hand in Germany.

Atletico Madrid's Italian chief Andrea Berta has been mooted in the list of potential director of football options, with Juventus' Fabio Paratici also a name in the frame.

Manchester United consider internal appointment for Director of Football position as ally of Mauricio Pochettino is ruled out

* Manchester United will consider internal candidates for Director of Football
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's arrival highlighted the importance of club knowledge
* Chief scout Jim Lawlor or head of global recruitment Marcel Bout could be asked
* United decided to appoint their first director of football in time for next season

Manchester United will consider internal candidates already working at Old Trafford in their inaugural search for a Director of Football.

The impact of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager has highlighted the importance of club knowledge and while Ed Woodward continues to assess options at home and abroad, he will not dismiss those under his noses.

Among those in senior positions at Old Trafford are chief scout Jim Lawlor, head of global recruitment Marcel Bout and corporate development chief Matt Judge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's impact has highlighted the importance of club knowledge. Ed Woodward (centre) is continuing to assess options both at home and abroad in the search

United have decided to appoint their first director of football in time for next season after a patchy record in player recruitment following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Though Woodward initially wanted to maintain United's strategy of making the manager the most important person in all aspects of the club, the strategy backfired as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho suffered patchy records in the transfer market.

One name who has been regularly linked with the director of football post, former Southampton and Spurs head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, is not a contender despite having previously worked with Mauricio Pochettino.

United consider Mitchell's transfer record at White Hart Lane to be mixed and don't see his relationship with Pochettino as close enough to have any positive or negative bearing on whether the Argentine would want to come to Old Trafford.

Pochettino and Solskjaer remain two candidates to be United's next permanent manager but the club are sticking to their strategy of conducting a thorough process across Europe which will run until the end of the season before any decision is made.
