Manchester United 3 West Ham 0: Heads again, Rooney! Wayne at the double but Rio sits it out
-dailymail.co.uk-

England captain Rio Ferdinand was an absentee from Old Trafford on Tuesday night as Manchester United rekindled their Barclays Premier League campaign. Wayne Rooney, however, was once again irrepressible.

Ferdinand, expected to play after serving a suspension, was not even in the directors’ box as United moved within a point of leaders Chelsea. Rooney, though, quite rightly took all the attention with two more superb goals.

Head for heights: Wayne Rooney produces another stunning headed goal to put Manchester United in front against West Ham

His first - the 26th of a terrific season - was another header, the England striker diving to thump Antonio Valencia’s cross past Robert Green in the 38th minute. The second, 10 minutes after half- time, was constructed and finished in exactly the same way.

Michael Owen, a 78th-minute substitute, added the third after being played in by Paul Scholes.

United, who made five changes from Saturday’s defeat at Everton, continue to look worryingly vulnerable in defence despite keeping a clean sheet. There was, however, some vigour about this performance and it was a win that Sir Alex Ferguson’s team deserved.

Two good: Rooney is congratulated by Valencia and Scholes after heading his second

The 3-1 loss at Goodison had set United back on their heels and last night at Old Trafford, where the green and gold presence in the crowd had swelled considerably, they simply had to win. Strange, then, that Ferguson left out players such as Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Ji-Sung Park, Edwin van der Sar and Jonny Evans.

Ferdinand, it became clear, had picked up an injury in training, as had Van der Sar. As for the others, they were simply paying the price for the weekend’s failure. Goalkeeper Ben Foster, preferred to Tomasz Kuszczak, made his first start since November 25, while fit-again Nemanja Vidic had last played in the defeat at Liverpool a month before that.

Injury blow: Brazilian midfielder Anderson is checked by referee Alan Wiley before being substituted

United’s team-sheet would certainly have given West Ham some hope, particularly as they were coming off back-to-back wins.

United’s early play was positive. With Anderson returning on the left side of midfield and Dimitar Berbatov enjoying another chance after a goal on Saturday, United began with a straightforward 4-4-2 and should have scored in the seventh minute.

A superb chipped pass across the penalty area from Rooney found Valencia in space, only for the Colombian to slip as he prepared to shoot, allowing former United defender Jonathan Spector to block with a sliding challenge.

Worryingly for United, Anderson - who had not played since mid-January - seemed to hurt his knee as he supplied the ball to Rooney in the build-up. He didn’t appear comfortable despite treatment and, sure enough, he was down again after quarter of an hour and replaced by Ji-Sung Park.

Just as he has in recent weeks, Rooney led the early United charge. One run threatened to take him all the way from the halfway line into the West Ham area until a tackle from James Tomkins stopped him in his tracks.

Once again, though, United looked vulnerable in their own half and their apparent weaknesses served to encourage West Ham.

United we stand: Old Trafford fans continue their green and gold protest against the Glazer family

First Valon Behrami shot across goal and wide when well placed and in space in the 20th minute and then, two minutes later, Foster had to backpedal to halt a dipping shot from Alessandro Diamanti which spun off Gary Neville’s heel and threatened to drop into the goal.

In truth, Foster made a bit of a meal of it and was perhaps relieved to see it land squarely on the goal line after he parried the ball with both hands. It was close to being another dreadful moment in what has been a crushing season for the young goalkeeper.

Perhaps irked by their opponents’ cheek, United rallied briefly and almost scored when Valencia drew a save from Green with a low shot. West Ham defenders did well to clear as the goalkeeper parried but then Green had to be alert again as Darron Gibson’s follow-up was flicked on with his heel by Berbatov.

Gibson likes to shoot from distance and with 35 minutes gone last night the Irishman tried again and saw his low effort touched round the post.

As half-time approached, West Ham remained quite comfortable. Certainly they appeared a more secure team defensively than for much of the season. However, in the 38th minute, United scored a sublime goal. Berbatov chipped the ball left to right across the area, Valencia volleyed it back and Rooney dived to head home from seven yards.

Two minutes before the break, it was almost No 27. Rooney looked offside when he received a touch on from Berbatov but the way he turned to volley from 20 yards on to the roof of the net with his right foot was simply stunning.

Vida: Good to be back
-manutd.com-

Nemanja Vidic made a successful return on his first start in 2010 for United, turning in a commanding defensive display in the 3-0 win over West Ham.

The Serbian has been troubled by a nerve problem in his right leg, and hadn’t played since the win over Wigan at the end of December. But his towering performance on Tuesday was a welcome sight.

“It’s nice to be back,” he told MUTV. “I enjoyed playing again. It’s a long time since I last played, but I am happy first of all that we won the game, and also that I feel OK in terms of the injury. I feel well and that’s very important for me. I didn’t feel any reaction today. So I am very happy.

“When I finished last season, I thought this season would be even better, but I’ve had the injury and this year has been very frustrating. I missed pre-season and two months recently. I hope the injury is in the past and I’m looking forward to the next games.”

United were defensively sound with Vidic marshalling the back four, and the 28-year-old was pleased with the team’s clean sheet.

“It was 3-0 but we could maybe have scored more,” he added. “We played some good football. In the beginning it wasn’t an easy game. They played with two forwards and tried to score. They had some good chances, but we dealt with that and deserved the three points.”

The win puts United a point behind league leaders Chelsea, who play their game in hand against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. They could reclaim a four-point lead, but Vidic isn’t worried by the Blues’ advantage.

“We believe we can win the title,” he said. “Confidence is a big word, but we believe we can do it. They could be four points in front of us [with their game in hand] but they have to come to our ground [in April]. We can do it, especially with some big players back from injury. I think we will be good for the rest of the season.”

Rooney-Owen Berikan MU Kemenangan
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport

Manchester - Dua gol dari Wayne Rooney dan satu dari Michael Owen membawa Manchester United meraih poin penuh atas West Ham United. Bertanding di hadapan pendukung sendiri, The Red Devils menekuk The Hammers dengan skor 3-0.

Susunan Pemain

Manchester United: Ben Foster, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Patrice Evra, Gary Neville, Anderson (Park Ji-Sung 19), Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney (Michael Owen 78), Dimitar Berbatov (Mame Biram Diouf 78).

West Ham United: Robert Green, Matthew Upson, James Tomkins, Jonathan Spector, Julien Faubert, Mark Noble, Radoslav Kovac, Alessandro Diamanti (Kieron Dyer 75), Valon Behrami (Jack Collison 63), Carlton Cole, Guillermo Franco (Mido 45).

Wow United semalem main bisa dikatakan tanpa cela.

Walaupun bukan skuad terbaik yg diturunkan, Gibbo n Scholes cukup kompak di tengah.

Rooney always on fire

Credit buat Vida yg udh balik, n cukup solid mainnya.

Sayang Ando cedera di awal laga.
