United don't scare us, insists City stopper Hart ahead of FA Cup semi-final showdown

Joe Hart insists Manchester City are not scarred by their painful run of defeats to neighbours United as the two clubs head for another momentous clash at Wembley.

Wayne Rooney’s spectacular late winner at Old Trafford in February added to City’s misery after they were beaten on three occasions last season by injury-time goals from Michael Owen, Rooney and Paul Scholes.


England goalkeeper Hart, who spent the season on loan at Birmingham, admitted that City feel they are due a lucky break against their neighbours but dismissed suggestions that those experiences will have a bearing on their FA Cup semi-final this weekend.

‘Not at all,’ said Hart. ‘It’s another game of football. There’s no point being dictated to by what’s gone on in previous seasons. If we go off that, there’s no point us going there.

‘Times have changed. It’s a new season, new players and hopefully a new winning mentality for City.

‘We are owed one against them but that’s just not how it works unfortunately. I wish it did. But I’m sure they know we’re capable of beating them and will respect that.

‘We’ll lock horns and it’s nice that it gets settled on the day. One will walk out of there in the Final and one will walk off a loser. It’s the tie everyone has wanted years for in the FA Cup.’

As City look to emerge from the shadow of their great rivals, Hart insists it is important they win to satisfy their own ambitions and not simply to silence the United fans who constantly remind them that it is now 35 years since the club last lifted a trophy.

‘We’re not particularly bothered by what United fans say or think,’ he said. ‘We’re all driven towards that goal of getting a trophy. We want to end the 30-odd year drought or whatever it is, but that’s not the reason for wanting to win the FA Cup.

‘We want to be successful for Man City and we want this trophy to be the first of many.’

Manchester United legend Gary Neville admits he will be a frustrated spectator during the club’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City this weekend.

The former right-back retired earlier in the season but during his glittering Old Trafford career, the defender relished United’s encounters with their bitter Premier League rivals.

Neville admits he would rather be involved in the game on Saturday then be in the stands, but acknowledges Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are well equipped to win the match given their recent form and big match experience.

Neville told the Manchester Evening News: “In some ways I wish I was playing because you look at it completely differently,

"You have a different level of anxiety when you watch the match as a fan. You are not in control. You are totally helpless.

"But the players will represent the club the way it should be. They hold it in their hearts. They are passionate about it and they are focused.

"Manchester United players are quite cold-hearted people,

"They don't let the emotion get to them. They will just go out and play, as they have done with every other City match.

"The idea is to try and control the tempo and keep patient.

"It is going to be a very difficult game against good opponents and the stakes are high. But Manchester United have dealt with that many times over the past 20 years."

Vidic ready for City challenge



Nemanja Vidic reckons Manchester City have an "obsession" about winning a trophy and will be fired up for their FA Cup semi against United.

It is 35 years since the Blues last won a trophy and rarely have they got closer during that time than they are at the moment.

Yet the formidable obstacle of Vidic's Manchester United stand in their way as City bid to reach the FA Cup final on Saturday.

"Manchester City have an obsession about winning a trophy," said the Serbian.

"After the big money they have spent, they want to win their first trophy.

"In the last few years we have had a lot of success. We have always been in quarter-finals, semi-finals, two Champions League finals.

"We are playing at the top level. Every team wants to do their best against us. But we will be ready."

In Vidic's case that means being ready to face anyone.

Until Monday night, it seemed the United skipper would be attempting to subdue former team-mate Carlos Tevez.

However, the Argentinean's hamstring injury will almost certainly rule him out, not that Vidic is anticipating an easier time.

"It is not an advantage for us that City are unlikely to have Tevez fit," said the 29-year-old.

"They will still have quality players up front and we never underestimate any players we play against.

"(Edin) Dzeko and Tevez are not the same player. Obviously Dzeko is a goalscorer who looks to play in the box and get on the end of crosses. He is a target man whereas Tevez likes to play on the ball and comes deep."

Dzeko is yet to get a Premier League goal for City, something Mario Balotelli has managed.

Yet, given Tevez's likely absence and the respective midweek performances of the two teams, United are favoured to reach their 11th final since City last appeared in one.

Not that Vidic is showing any outward sign of superiority, even though United are also top of the Premier League and have a Champions League semi-final against Schalke to look forward to.

"We don't want to be arrogant or think we are the specials," he said.

"We are just trying to do our best.

"Manchester City will be a very difficult game but a few players haven't won the FA Cup, myself included, and we are hungry to achieve it."
