SCOUTING REPORT: NEW INJURY CONCERN FOR PSG

Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel believes it will be “very difficult” for striker Edinson Cavani to play in Tuesday's Champions League game with Manchester United.

The Ligue 1 side warmed up for their visit to Old Trafford by beating Bordeaux 1-0 on Saturday night, thanks to a penalty from Cavani.

But the Uruguayan forward was unable to finish the match due to an injury problem, and was substituted at half-time.

Tuchel is already without the services of star Brazilian playmaker Neymar, who has been ruled out due to a metatarsal issue, and after the Bordeaux match, the German manager revealed that Cavani faces an uphill battle to be involved at Old Trafford.

“We don't have good news for Edi,“ said Tuchel. “He has undergone exams and there will be more tests here at the training centre. My feeling is that it will be very difficult for him to feature in Manchester.

“The club will wait a little longer, but in my opinion the news will not be good. Hope is very, very small.”

VERRATTI RETURNS

There was positive news in other areas, however. Italian midfielder Marco Verratti returned to the starting XI after several weeks out with ankle troubles, and played just short of one hour before being substituted.

“He played 60 minutes, I don't know if it's possible for him to play again at Old Trafford against Manchester United only three days later,” admitted Tuchel.

“But, in our situation, it's maybe necessary to try to make him play. We have to decide tomorrow [Sunday] about that. We have to wait for Marco's opinion.”

The win against Bordeaux stretched PSG's lead at the top of the French league to an eye-opening 13 points, and the Rouge et Blue still have a game in hand over second-place Lille.

But it has been a difficult period for the champions. Last weekend brought their first league defeat of the season, away at Lyon, while they needed extra-time - and the introduction of French World Cup-winning prodigy Kylian Mbappe - to overcome lowly Villefranche in the French Cup on Wednesday evening.

Now they face a race against time to prepare Cavani for Tuesday's match at Old Trafford.

Default Re: [UCL] Manchester United vs PSG

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PSG

Paris Saint-Germain was founded in 1970, following the fusion of Stade Saint-Germain (created in 1904) and Paris FC, although the latter seceded from the arrangement in 1972.

Two years later, PSG was promoted to the top flight, where they have stayed ever since – making them the longest-lasting Ligue 1 side.

After winning their first major trophies in the ‘80s, Paris came to prominence when they were bought by French broadcaster Canal+ in 1991. It was the start of a period in which they won the 1996 European Cup Winners’ Cup, becoming the second French club to win a continental title, and the last one to date.

This club has a rich history in its rather short lifetime, but arguably reached a new dimension with the takeover by Qatar Investment Authority in 2011. Barely two years later, Paris were crowned French champions for the first time since 1994. And since 2014, they have been enjoying an almost total domination over the French trophies, winning every edition of the League Cup, four of five French Cups and four of five Ligue 1 titles.

However, PSG is yet to fulfill its potential in the Champions League: they reached the quarter-finals four years in a row between 2013 and 2016, then bowed out in the last 16 during the last two campaigns, respectively against Barcelona (following a surprise ‘remontada’ or comeback, losing 6-1 after winning the first leg 4-0) and Real Madrid.

Trophies: French League x 7 (including five of the last six), French Cup x 12, French League Cup x 8, French Super Cup x 8, European Cup Winners’ Cup x 1, International Champions Cup x 2.

Famous past players: David Ginola, Youri Djorkaeff, George Weah, Nicolas Anelka, Ronaldinho, Pauleta, Claude Makelele, Blaise Matuidi, Mamadou Sakho, Zlatan Ibrahimović, David Beckham.

CURRENT SQUAD AND TACTICS

Since taking charge last summer, Thomas Tuchel has tried numerous tactics, both at the back and up front – where he has plenty of talent competing for spots. Typically, Kimpembe and Silva are the two centre-backs, shielded by Marquinhos, but the young Brazilian drops back when Paris is not in possession to make a five-man-strong defence.

Further up the pitch, the manager’s main idea was to give as much freedom as possible to Neymar. Initially a left winger with a free-roaming card, he was often used as a playmaker, freeing the wing for Di Maria or Draxler. The opposite wing is occupied by Mbappe, while Cavani is the target man.

Without long-term absentee Neymar, Tuchel has reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, with a midfield populated by Di Maria on the left and Alves on the right; an option designed to occupy the width during build-up, and strengthening the flanks when they drop back.

Verratti was also out in the past weeks, nursing a sprained ankle, but the diminutive Italian resumed training on Monday (along with fullback Layvin Kurzawa). Tuchel welcomed his return, as he didn’t have any genuine holding midfielder, since Adrien Rabiot is sanctioned by the club (for refusing to sign a new contract, with his current deal due to expire this summer) and new recruit Leandro Paredes just arrived and is still settling in.

There was a setback later in the week when Verratti was unable to complete a training session, but the Azzurri international returned to the starting line-up for Saturday's 1-0 victory over Bordeaux, playing 59 minutes.

Probable starting XI vs United: Buffon; Bernat, Kimpembe, Thiago Silva, Kherer; Di Maria, Verratti, Marquinhos, Dani Alves; Mbappé, Cavani.

Fun fact: The PG squad includes five World Cup winners: Buffon (Italy, 2006), Julian Draxler (Germany, 2014), Kylian Mbappé, Presnel Kimpembe and Alphonse Areola (France, 2018).

HOW ARE THEY DOING?

PSG had a rocky start to 2019: eliminated from the French League Cup by Guingamp (who sit bottom of Ligue 1, with only three victories to their name), and losing both Neymar and Verratti to injury. They then suffered their first league loss of this campaign, against Olympique Lyonnais.
Yet this potent team should not be underestimated. They have won all five of their other matches in 2019, scoring a terrifying 22 goals while conceding just one in the process. They are top of Ligue 1, 10 points clear of their closest rival (with two games in hand).

They’ve only lost three matches this season in all competitions, including a last-minute 3-2 defeat at Anfield in September (before winning the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Parc des Princes). In fact, when the last-16 draw was made, this was their only loss of the season, and back then United was struggling, which prompted most French media to call it a great opportunity and flagging PSG as the clear favourites.

Of course, the tables have turned since and the general mood in France is that this will be a tough fixture for Tuchel's team.

ONE TO WATCH: KYLIAN MBAPPE

While he’s only 20, Mbappe needs almost no introduction. After a few successful years in Monaco – where he turned professional a few months after Anthony Martial left to join United – the young forward enjoyed a good 2017/18 season in Paris, which earned him a regular spot in the France team. The rest is history: he then lifted the World Cup trophy, notably scoring a brace against Argentina in the last 16 and adding a goal in the final against Croatia, barely six minutes after Paul Pogba had made it 3-1.
His incredible pace and deadly finishing have already allowed him to contribute 36 goals this season in 29 matches (26 goals, 10 assists), including four in 13 minutes against Lyon in their 5-0 humbling back in October, plus a hat-trick in the 9-0 thrashing of Guingamp in their January Ligue 1 meeting.

Mbappe’s speed of achievement on the pitch is matched by his list of honours: elected in the Best XI of the Under-19s Euros in 2016, he was named Best Young Ligue 1 Player the following year and Best Young Player of the 2018 World Cup.

You probably remember the old poster starring Reds legend Eric Cantona: “1966 was a great year for English football. Eric was born.” Well, Mbappe was born in 1998, the year of France’s first World Cup triumph…

UNITED V PSG IS WHY WE LOVE THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
by Mark Froggatt

Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16, beneath a glistening night sky and the floodlights of Old Trafford, with almost 75,000 fans packed into the stands.

I haven’t been this excited about a game in ages.

It is an occasion that stitches seamlessly into the history books of our great club, which has entertained so many with tales of teams proudly testing themselves against Europe's best.

In the last week, we have remembered those lost as a result of the Munich Air Disaster, and Sir Matt Busby’s ambition – to tackle new frontiers – remains an immovable element of our DNA.

New chapters have been hard to come by in recent years, but Tuesday night is clearly one of them.

In PSG, we welcome an opponent that we have never met before.

The dominant champions of France are visiting the Theatre of Dreams fuelled by ambition and desire, as they aggressively pursue the biggest prize of all: that elusive Champions League trophy.

The Ligue 1 leaders have nailed the domestic game by winning five of the last six championships, yet the illustrious European Cup remains a cruel mistress and German manager Thomas Tuchel was appointed last summer with a reported target to advance further than before in the competition.

Finishing top of Group C ahead of Liverpool and Napoli was a statement of their quality and intent, and many observers have already tipped them to shine in this season’s anticipated knockout stages.

That assessment is easy to understand when you consider their forward line includes Uruguayan powerhouse Edinson Cavani, French darling Kylian Mbappe and Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr.

The rest of their squad is infiltrated with excellence as well: the likes of Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, Marquinhos, Julian Draxler, Angel Di Maria and Marco Verratti are all world-class operators.

When the last-16 draw was made, the prospect of facing that star-studded group was admittedly worrying.

As a fan I always believe we can beat any foe, but we weren’t playing well and confidence was low at that time.

All of that has changed now.

The appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager has sparked an 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions and a feelgood factor that continues to engulf the club. The players are buzzing, the supporters are rightly optimistic and, all of a sudden, PSG look beatable.

Interestingly, Tuchel’s side suffered a first Ligue 1 defeat of the season last Sunday when going down 2-1 to Lyon at the Groupama Stadium, where Solskjaer and Mike Phelan were both in attendance.

In midweek, they needed extra time to beat lowly Villefranche in the Coupe de France, before winning 1-0 against Bordeaux on Saturday via a penalty.

Will these mixed results and performances have a negative impact? Probably not. But it can’t have lifted morale.

What is arguably the biggest talking point in French football – the broken metatarsal that has ruled Neymar out of action for 10 weeks – has also improved our chances in the eyes of many pundits.

Personally, I am disappointed the flamboyant Brazilian will not feature against us.

Watching iconic players at Old Trafford is part of the Champions League’s charm.

I have great memories of seeing Gabriel Batistuta with Fiorentina, Ivan Zamorano with Inter, Alessandro Del Piero with Juventus, Ronaldo with Real Madrid and, more recently, Lionel Messi with Barcelona. It was a joy to see them all at Old Trafford.

But there are plenty more from Paris to enjoy and nobody is more eye-catching than Mbappe, the 20-year-old prodigy and recent Time magazine cover star that inspired his nation when France won the World Cup in Russia last summer – with a little help from our very own Paul Pogba, of course.

Alas, as Solskjaer has repeatedly stressed since his arrival, the focus should be on our strengths and the threats we will pose.

We have the world’s best goalkeeper in David De Gea, an increasingly-organised defence that is keeping clean sheets, a midfield trio of Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Pogba that is performing excellently, plus a forward line that has enough pace and power to concern any opposition.

Throw a galvanised fanbase that is desperate for a Champions League adventure into the mix and we have all of the ingredients needed for a fantastic European night on Tuesday evening.

It will be a special atmosphere – there always is in the knockout rounds – and I cannot wait for the action to begin.

The opinions in this story are personal to the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United Football Club.

SOLSKJAER'S RESPECT FOR PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani as a 'viking' ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian has huge respect for the French champions and admits their front players would be a handful for any defence.

Of course, Neymar is set to miss out on the first leg, and probably the return in Paris as well, but Ole is an admirer of Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and several other talents that coach Thomas Tuchel has at his disposal.

“Paris Saint-Germain is one of the toughest [draws] you can get, but one we look forward to, I have to say,” he told UEFA. “Their front three is probably the best front three outside of Manchester.

”They have top, top players in every position: the back four, the three in midfield, the front three - who are all fantastic. And Tuchel is very good tactically. He can play 3-4-3 or he can go with a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. So we can't prepare any specific tactics. We have to concentrate on ourselves, to play our brand of football.

“If we do that, I think we can give them a good fight.”

“I have to say, they have everything, really. They create space for themselves, they have technique and strength.

”Cavani is like a viking, like the ones you see in videos, like a warrior almost! Mbappe has incredible pace, there is no-one as lightning quick as him.

“Then there is Neymar. The way he gets past players and he is also a good finisher.

“But still, I have three good forwards myself, no matter how many we decide to play up top, it could be two or three. As well as Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku, we have Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard.

”They can challenge PSG's defence.“

United will be aiming to take a lead to the French capital with the second leg not until Wednesday 6 March.
The two teams have never met before in a competitive fixture and anticipation is already building ahead of what promises to be a special evening at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Barisan Depan Manchester United Bisa Repotkan Paris Saint-Germain

Ole meyakini pemain seperti Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez hingga Jesse Lingard bisa memberi masalah serius buat PSG.

Manajer interim Manchester United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meyakini barisan depan timnya bisa merepotkan PSG jelang pertemuan leg pertama babak 16 besar Liga Champions, Rabu (13/2) dini hari WIB lusa.

SOLSKJAER'S TEAM NEWS FOR PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN TEST

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Manchester United will have almost a fully fit squad available for Tuesday night’s big Champions League clash with Paris St-Germain.

Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian missed Saturday’s 3-0 win at Fulham, before which Solskjaer said the defensive pair had “niggles” which could keep them out “for a couple of weeks”.

The full-backs also did not appear during the 15 minutes of Monday morning’s training session which was open to the media.

Speaking exclusively to MUTV before his pre-match press conference, Ole gave an update on the injury situation ahead of the French champions' visit to Old Trafford for the first leg of the last-16 tie.

“We’re missing Antonio [Valencia] and Matteo [Darmian] – they’re the two that are not available,” the Norwegian told Stewart Gardner.

“It’s a big, strong and healthy squad which is always [good] when the big games come up – many to pick from.”

Valencia has not played since the 2-0 win at Newcastle on 2 January, while Darmian hasn’t featured since appearing as a late substitute in our 2-1 win over Brighton on 19 January.

HOW ARE PSG SHAPING UP?

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel admitted it would be “very difficult” for Edinson Cavani to feature on Tuesday night after the Uruguayan striker was withdrawn through injury at half-time on Saturday, after scoring the penalty which proved decisive in their 1-0 victory over Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

The French outfit were already missing the services of star Brazilian playmaker Neymar, who has been ruled out due to a metatarsal issue.

However, there was some positive news for PSG at the weekend as Italian midfielder Marco Verratti played just under an hour after returning to the starting XI against Bordeaux after several weeks out with ankle trouble.

We could learn more about how the French side may line up for tomorrow’s game when Tuchel speaks to the media at Old Trafford from around 17:45 GMT today.
