EARLY TEAM NEWS FOR FULHAM V UNITED

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could have a plethora of options when he selects his next Manchester United line-up, for Saturday's early fixture against Fulham in the Premier League.

One player who could be in contention to return in the clash at Craven Cottage, and therefore feature against his former club, is Chris Smalling. The centre-back has not appeared in any of the 10 games under Solskjaer, having not played since the reverse fixture against Fulham in December, which the Reds won 4-1.

Our no.12 sustained a sore foot that afternoon at Old Trafford which forced him off, but Ole said before the recent game against Burnley that Smalling had been training for a week and was “looking good”. He added that it was a case of carefully timing the defender's return to action.

In Smalling's absence, a pair from Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones has operated at the heart of defence. Marcos Rojo is back in training after travelling to Argentina to aid his recovery from his latest injury setback.

The Reds face a huge match next Tuesday evening against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of our Champions League last-16 tie with the French champions. We also have crucial games against Liverpool in the league and Chelsea in the Emirates FA Cup this month, as well as the second leg against PSG at the start of March.

Solskjaer has previously spoken of the importance of keeping his players fresh during this part of the campaign and squad rotation could be key throughout February.

United were boosted by the return of Anthony Martial as a substitute in last weekend's 1-0 win at Leicester City, after the Frenchman missed the 2-2 draw against Burnley with a minor injury he sustained in training.

There were also concerns ahead of the Leicester clash about Paul Pogba, who was struggling at the end of the Burnley game but he was fit to face Leicester and set up Marcus Rashford's winning goal with a sublime lobbed pass. Rashford, who scored in our win over Fulham two months ago, will be hoping to continue his excellent goalscoring form of late, having registered six goals in his last eight Premier League matches.

Solskjaer could provide an update on his squad in his exclusive interview with MUTV and pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex, which is set to take place on Friday at a time to be confirmed.

HOW ARE FULHAM SHAPING UP?

The Cottagers could hand debuts to midfielder Lazar Markovic and defender Havard Nordtveit this weekend. The pair joined the Cottagers on transfer deadline day but were not included in the matchday squad for last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, having signed just two days before the game.

Former Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle could return after missing the Palace game through injury, but full-back Cyrus Christie is a doubt for Saturday's match after sustaining a knock in the loss at Selhurst Park.

One man who is definitely unavailable for Claudio Ranieri’s side is defender Tim Fosu-Mensah, who is ineligible to play against his parent club United. Long-term absentees Marcus Bettinelli, Alfie Mawson and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa will also miss Saturday’s meeting in west London.

FULHAM V UNITED: YOUR ESSENTIAL MATCH PREVIEW

Manchester United face a second away game in a row as we travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham in the weekend’s early kick-off in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are hoping to build on our 1-0 win against Leicester City last out time out, when Marcus Rashford’s strike after nine minutes saw us take all three points against the Foxes.

That victory was our fourth Premier League away win in succession and a fifth in all competitions since Ole took caretaker charge of the team.

The Reds ran out 4-1 winners in December’s clash with the Cottagers and three points against Claudio Ranieri’s side this time around would, at least temporarily, lift us into the top four.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the game…

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE GAME?

The game kicks off at 12:30 GMT on Saturday and will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK. Subscribers to MUTV will be able to enjoy live build-up to the match from 11:00 GMT in the 'Match Day' programme, while you can also follow our coverage of the match on ManUtd.com and in the Official App, which you can download here.

LATEST TEAM NEWS

The Reds have a full-strength squad to pick from for the match, which means defender Chris Smalling is available for the trip to his old club. The centre-back has not played since picking up a foot injury in the home game against Fulham two months ago, but could return this weekend. With a busy schedule coming up, Ole could be tempted to rotate his squad on Saturday, especially given the huge clash against Paris Saint-Germain next week. United also face Chelsea and Liverpool later this month before the return leg against PSG at the start of March. To find out the manager’s latest team plans make sure to tune in to Ole’s pre-match press conference on Friday, which is live on MUTV.

WHAT ABOUT FULHAM?

The Londoners could give debuts to Lazar Markovic and Havard Nordtveit this weekend. The duo joined Fulham on transfer-deadline day but were not ready to be included in their matchday squad for the last outing against Crystal Palace. However, with a week’s training under their belts, Markovic and Nordtveit could be selected against the Reds. Andre Schurrle might also feature after missing the previous game through injury. On the other hand, one man who won’t be playing is United loanee Tim Fosu-Mensah, with the defender ineligible for selection against his parent side. Saturday’s hosts with also be without Marcus Bettinelli, who is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery last week, and long-term absentee Alfie Mawson.

HOW ARE THEY GETTING ON?

Fulham lost 2-0 against Palace last week, their fifth defeat in the last six. However, the Cottagers have been more reliable at home in recent weeks and have won two of the last three league games at the Cottage, with the one loss coming at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the dying seconds. Fulham overcame a two-goal deficit in their last home match and emerged as 4-2 winners against Brighton in a real thriller. Despite sitting 19th in table with 17 points from 25 games, there have been signs of a revival from Fulham recently, something United must be wary of on Saturday.

ONE TO WATCH

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been the main man for Fulham this season, scoring 10 goals in 25 Premier League games. The striker joined the Cottagers on loan from Newcastle United last year and helped fuel their late surge up the Championship table, which ultimately saw them gain promotion. Mitrovic made the switch permanent in the summer and has since been a colossal presence up front for Ranieri’s men. The 24-year-old has scored in all four of Fulham’s league wins this season and, without his goals, the west London club would be 10 points worse off in the table.

WHAT’S OUR RECORD LIKE AGAINST FULHAM?

We have previously faced Fulham on 83 occasions, the first of which took place in 1905. Over the years, United have enjoyed the clashes with the Cottagers, winning 50 of the past meetings, drawing 19 and losing just 14. In the Premier League era, the Reds have also won 19 of the 27 games against Saturday’s opponents. This is our first trip to Craven Cottage since 2013, when we won 3-1 thanks to goals from Antonio Valencia, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

WHO’S THE REFEREE?

Paul Tierney will oversee proceedings at Craven Cottage on Saturday. The 23-year-old has been in charge of two United matches this season, both of which we won 2-1. The first game was our trip to Bournemouth in November and the latter was our victory against Brighton three weeks ago. Eddie Smart and Mick McDonough are Tierney’s assistants, while Graham Scott will assume the role of fourth official.

SOLSKJAER'S TEAM NEWS FOR FULHAM TRIP

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an update on three defenders ahead of Manchester United's trip to Fulham on Saturday.

The Reds will look to extend the Norwegian's unbeaten run as caretaker manager to 11 matches when facing the struggling west London club in the lunch-time game (kick-off 12:30 GMT).

Before his press conference on Friday, Ole told MUTV in his exclusive interview at the Aon Training Complex that Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian will be sidelined for a few weeks with minor injuries.

Solskjaer also said that Marcos Rojo has been training all week, after he recently returned from an injury rehabilitation period in his native Argentina.

“Rojo has been training for a few days, so he’s back in training,“ said Ole. ”But we’ve lost Antonio and Matteo through niggles for a couple of weeks.

“We’re still not bad. We’ve got 20-21 players training every day, so that’s good.”

In a separate discussion at his press conference, he added: “Antonio has been training hard, really hard, and then he got a setback. So, hopefully, in a couple of weeks, he'll be back with us. He's been a fantastic servant at the club, he's captain for a reason and, hopefully, we can get him back on the pitch. It was hard when he broke down, because he would have travelled this weekend.”

HOW ARE FULHAM SHAPING UP?

Claudio Ranieri’s side, who are second from bottom in the Premier League, will have Cyrus Christie and Andre Schurrle available for Saturday’s game.

Full-back Christie was withdrawn in the second half of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, while former Chelsea forward Schurrle missed out altogether through injury.

Of course, defender Tim Fosu-Mensah is ineligible to play against his parent club, as he is on loan from the Reds. Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and centre-back Alfie Mawson are long-term absentees.

Ranieri also told the media on Thursday that January signings Lazar Markovic and Havard Nordtveit won’t be fit enough to start but could be involved after training this week.

SOLSKJAER THRILLED WITH SECOND-HALF DISPLAY

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked up his tenth win in eleven games as Manchester United's caretaker manager, as the Reds swept aside Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage.

The Norwegian was naturally delighted with his team's performance, particularly in the second half. He also name-checked a number of individuals, including goalscorers Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, midfielder Ander Herrera and the returning centre-back Chris Smalling.

Scroll down to read what Solskjaer had to say to MUTV, Sky Sports and reporters in his press conference.

IT WAS A FANTASTIC SECOND-HALF PERFORMANCE

“In the first 10 minutes we were poor, we did not play the way we should have done. Yes, of course the conditions were difficult, with the wind, but we made it more difficult by playing into their hands with the press and we gave them some counter attacks. After 2-0 I felt in control and in the second half I thought we played really, really well compared to the Leicester game last week. I thought Ander and Nemanja controlled the midfield, we let Paul float around and it was a fantastic performance in the second half.”

POGBA IS ENJOYING HIMSELF

“He [Paul] is doing well, he is enjoying himself, he is playing well. His energy is high so that was one of the questions I asked myself - should I play him or should I not, because there is a big game coming up on Tuesday? But I think the intention shows when you play Paul, and everyone knew that we needed to take this game seriously.”

MARTIAL IN FREE FLOW IS A GREAT SIGHT

“I didn’t think about [the comparable Ronaldo goal in 2007] but Anthony in free flow is a great sight. His balance is fantastic, he is very strong, he shrugs defenders off and he is quick. He is a very, very good finisher and I think that goal won us the game. I think we were in complete control after that.”

SMALLING WAS FANTASTIC

“They [Jones and Smalling] did well, the two of them. We must remember Chris hasn’t played for over two months and it was an absolutely fantastic performance from him. He has worked hard to get back, he has been on his own, up and down that touchline running with the physios. I was never in doubt he was going to play today because this was the game that I had earmarked for him.”

WE MUST CONCENTRATE ON OURSELVES

“I’m not concerned about anyone else, the other teams, but yes I could have imagined taking as many points as we have. To go on that pitch and wear that shirt, with the quality they have got, the players must be confident we can win a football game.”

PRAISE FOR THE FANS

“The fans are like that always, they are fantastic. We knew coming here we always have the fans behind that goal and it is just a shame we couldn’t play [for them in the first half] like we did in the second half.”

YOUNG SQUAD, EXCITING FUTURE

“I am always looking further ahead. I have followed United since I signed for United and I look at the squad, the players who can produce and perform now, those who can do it in a year, who can do it in two. Here we have got players who can perform for five, six, seven, eight and nine years because it is such a young and exciting squad so let’s see where we can end up.”

INTO THE TOP FOUR

“At the moment I am just concentrating on getting us up the table. Now we are fourth and let's hope we can stay there for a long time. Not for too long as we want to get higher up of course but now we have taken that step into the top four. The next league game is Liverpool, which is fantastic to look forward to and of course we have a couple of nice games between that [Paris saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea in the Emirates FA Cup]. We have to do everything ourselves, we can’t rely on anyone’s help, so we will just carry on the way we do.”
