Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Liverpool

The alternative Manchester United system that could be used vs Liverpool FC

Man Utd host Jurgen Klopp's Premier League leaders at Old Trafford when the Premier League fixtures return after international football.
Quote:
There can be no debating Manchester United will have a tough job on their hands against Liverpool.

It is surely the toughest game, on paper, that United have faced since they were destroyed by Barcelona in last season's Champions League quarter-final.

Jurgen Klopp's side are the runaway Premier League leaders at this stage, with an irresistible front line and an impassable back line.

So Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his United coaching staff must come up with something special to bypass Virgil van Dijk and company at the back, as well as stifling Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

The two-week international break may have given the Norwegian time to devise a bespoke system to deal with Liverpool. Because there is an option for United to switch to a three centre-back formation, a 5-2-3 or 3-4-3, which would suit the strengths and weaknesses of Solskjaer's squad.

David de Gea will obviously play in goal. So to the question of who fills the third centre-back role? It has a straightforward answer in Axel Tuanzebe, who looks a fine defender and someone comfortable playing either centre-back or right back — so therefore perfect for the right-sided centre-back slot.

Harry Maguire has played regularly as the left-sided centre-back in such systems, while the extra protection might bring the best out of Victor Lindelof, who should play down the middle.

An issue might arrive in that neither Aaron Wan-Bissaka — who should be back from illness — nor Ashley Young are naturally attacking full-backs, despite Young's history as a winger. But against Liverpool, they ought to be tasked with tracking back more than going forward.

That may allow United to create a five versus three situation against Salah, Mane and Firmino. Or at least it will allow United's wing-backs to go man-to-man with the marauding Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.
Quote:
If Paul Pogba is missing from the midfield, then Solskjaer is basically obliged to pick a two-man midfield given the form of United's other midfielders.

Fred might, by default, be given another chance alongside Scott McTominay.

Although 3-4-3 appears to leave teams short in the middle, with just two named central midfielders, if the 'wide forwards' drop inside and a little deeper, it can create a box of four players, who United could use to crowd out Liverpool's usual midfield trio of: Gini Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Marcus Rashford would seem to suit one of those roles, presuming Anthony Martial returns from a thigh injury in the centre-forward role. Daniel James is an automatic pick as the other.

It would be a system that would, at the very least, surprise Liverpool and Klopp and at the most give United the balance and control that they've badly lacked in the past few weeks. The only real change would be Tuanzebe instead of a No.10 from the 4-2-3-1 formation Solskjaer usually favours.

It could have a transformative affect in a hugely daunting fixture against the old enemy.

Manchester United receive huge fitness boost ahead of showdown against rivals Liverpool with Anthony Martial ‘expected to be fit’ for Old Trafford clash following thigh injury

* Anthony Martial is expected to be fit for Manchester United against Liverpool
* The Frenchman hasn't played since August 24 because of a thigh problem
* United have struggled for goals without Martial and he will give them a boost

Manchester United have been handed a major boost on the fitness front with striker Anthony Martial set to be available for Sunday's game at home to Liverpool.

Martial hasn't played since August 24 because of a thigh problem, but is in contention to feature at Old Trafford, as reported by The Sun.

The Frenchman started the season in impressive form, scoring in consecutive games against Chelsea and Wolves.

Marcus Rashford has struggled up front in Martial's absence, and the return of the latter will give United an much-needed extra option.

If he features, Martial will be hoping to replicate the impact that he made on his United debut at home to Liverpool in 2015, when he scored in a 3-1 victory.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is expected to be fit to face Liverpool. Martial, who hasn't played since August, is set to provide United with a much-needed option

Martial is one of only five players to have found the net for United this season, with Daniel James, Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay the others.

United are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League, and have gone three games without a victory in all competitions.

Injuries haven't helped United's cause, with Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Greenwood, Victor Lindelof, Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all currently sidelined, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also out with tonsillitis.

Injury scare for Manchester United ahead of crunch Liverpool clash as David De Gea limps off during Spain's draw in Sweden

* David de Gea limped out of Spain's Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden
* The goalkeeper was forced off by a suspected hamstring injury in 60th minute
* Manchester United face Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday

Manchester United face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the injury suffered by David de Gea while playing for Spain on Tuesday night.

The goalkeeper was forced off after he appeared to pull a muscle in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden.

De Gea appeared to suffer the injury while after clearing a backpass on the hour mark.

Goalkeeper David de Gea was forced off by a suspected groin injury on Tuesday night

In an innocuous-looking incident, De Gea immediately grabbed his muscle.

The 28-year-old sat on the ground in his six-yard box before being replaced by Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping the injury is not serious, with a huge game against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Spain coach Robert Moreno said of De Gea's withdrawal: 'He had pain in the groin muscle but he received treatment at half-time and wanted to keep playing. He gave us his word, but in the end he couldn't continue.'

De Gea appeared to suffer the injury while taking a goal kick just after the hour mark

A stoppage-time strike by substitute Rodrigo Moreno cancelled out Marcus Berg's opener for Sweden and gave Spain the draw they needed to qualify for Euro 2020 in a Group F game that finished 1-1 on Tuesday night.

Spain dominated the opening 20 minutes and looked set to easily book their berth in next year's finals but Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen pulled off a string of superb saves as his side grew into the game.

Striker Berg put Sweden in front early in the second half after his initial header was saved, as was Emil Forsberg's shot, but Berg nodded home from close range at the second attempt to give his side the lead.

De Gea left the fray injured on the hour mark and, despite plenty of possession, the Spaniards had to wait until stoppage time before Rodrigo finally found a way past Olsen, firing home to send his group-leading side to the finals.

David de Gea and Paul Pogba both OUT of Liverpool clash as Manchester United injury crisens worsens

* Manchester United host Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been dealt a huge blow ahead of the crunch fixture
* Paul Pogba misses out with a foot injury after struggling to recover in time
* David de Gea pulled a muscle on international duty with Spain on Tuesday

Manchester United are preparing to be without David de Gea and Paul Pogba for their crunch clash with Liverpool on Sunday as the Old Trafford crisis deepens.

De Gea has compounded United's injury problems after he limped out of Spain's Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden on Tuesday night with a groin strain.

The goalkeeper will be assessed by the club's medical staff when he returns to Carrington on Thursday but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Wednesday night that he is unlikely to play.

Paul Pogba has been ruled out of Manchester United's clash vs Liverpool with a foot injury

'David needs a scan,' said the United boss. 'I think he'll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway judging on last night so it's just one of those things.'

No 2 keeper Sergio Romero will step in to play his first league game in 17 months as a patched-up United face a Liverpool team looking to equal Manchester City's record of 18 straight Premier League wins.

United will also be without Pogba who is recovering from an ankle and foot injury after playing just twice since August.

The Frenchman has returned from a warm weather rehabilitation break in Dubai with his right foot still in a protective cast and is expected to be out of action until the end of the month.

Asked about Pogba's availability for Liverpool, Solskjaer said: 'No chance. Paul had an injury, came back, worked really hard, played a couple of games, played through the pain barrier.

'He had a scan after the Arsenal game and needed a few weeks' rest in a boot so hopefully he won't be too long, but he won't make this game.'

David de Gea suffered a muscle problem while on international duty on Tuesday night

United had hoped a number of their injured stars would be back in time for Sunday's game but Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot are all understood to be struggling.

Anthony Martial, who has not played in almost two months due to a thigh injury, is fit again but has still not trained with just three days to go until the Liverpool game.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is in a similar situation after missing the last three games with a bout of tonsillitis. Although United's £50million summer signing has recovered, he has yet to take part in full training.

It is a worrying scenario for Solskjaer who has seen United slip to 12th place in the table following their worst start to a season in 30 years.

Although United are continuing to back the Norwegian, it's understood that he feels a heavy defeat by the club's biggest rivals could put his job in jeopardy.

Liverpool have surged to the top of the table after a perfect start and some bookmakers on Wednesday night made United 4/1 to win the game.

It's the second biggest price on them to win a home Premier League game behind the 6/1 odds on a victory over City in April.

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez has been ruled out for three months after making just four appearances for Inter Milan on loan from United.

Sanchez dislocated his left ankle and damaged tendons playing for Chile against Colombia at the weekend, and had surgery in Barcelona on Wednesday.

Inter released a statement saying: 'The visit confirmed the diagnosis of the Inter medical staff and the decision was made to proceed with surgery on the left ankle. The operation went exactly as planned.'

'We have a great chance to change the dynamic': Juan Mata insists Liverpool clash is a chance for Manchester United to turn their season around

* Juan Mata thinks Manchester United can 'change the dynamic' against Liverpool
* United have started the season terribly, winning nine points from eight games
* They welcome their bitter rivals to Old Trafford on Sunday, needing a victory

Juan Mata believes Sunday's mammoth clash against Liverpool gives Manchester United a chance to 'change the dynamic' of the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have endured a torrid start to the new season, taking just nine points from their opening eight matches.

Things don't get easier on Sunday when they host Premier League leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Reds have a 100 per cent record and already have a 15-point lead over United

However, Mata believes the fixture presents an opportunity for his side to turn their season around.

In his latest blog post, the Spaniard wrote: 'On Sunday [against Liverpool] we have a great chance to change the dynamic and we are all very motivated to take the win.

'We are United, we are playing at home and we will give everything to be able to take the victory that our fans deserve in such a special game.'

Mata has made 10 appearances so far this season but has failed to produce a goal or assist in 413 minutes of football.

United face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the injury suffered by David de Gea while playing for Spain on Tuesday night.

The goalkeeper was forced off after he appeared to pull a muscle in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden.

De Gea appeared to suffer the injury while after clearing a backpass on the hour mark.

Speaking about Spain's draw that secured their place at Euro 2020, Mata also wished his colleague a speedy recovery.

He added: 'The bad news from that game was that David [De Gea] wasn’t able to finish the match due to an injury problem after making some great saves.

'I hope that it won’t be anything major and he can be back with us soon.'

UNITED V LIVERPOOL: COLE AND ROBSON HAVE THEIR SAY

Andy Cole and Bryan Robson know all about the thrills and spills of Manchester United v Liverpool games and both are looking forward to the latest encounter between the two rivals on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Ahead of the match, we sat down with the two legends, who have been in the United States this week on club business, to discuss five key topics relating to Sunday’s big game…

FOCUS

Andy Cole:
“As players you’re always looking forward to this game, it’s the biggest of the season every year. In my time you always knew this game was coming up because the gaffer [Sir Alex] would be a little bit angrier as the week went on! We all understood the magnitude of the game and its importance and you’ve got to be professional. Every team wants to beat Manchester United and even though this is the biggest match you have to approach this as you would every match. You’ve got to block out the media too because they’re always trying to big things up with this game. As players you appreciate how big the game is but you don’t look at the media. And the bottom line is if you stay focused and play to the best of your ability you have a great chance of winning.”

Bryan Robson: “You more or less knew what Liverpool team you were facing so you know what you’ve got to do and you focus yourself on that. Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex were very good before these big games, they didn’t really put you under pressure because they knew you were concentrating on your preparations and they knew every player would be up for this game. Everyone knows how important this game is – not just when it comes to winning league titles and cups, but it’s the game all the fans look for and want to win. I always had the same little nerves in my stomach before every game, it wasn’t just this one. You just have to prepare yourself as best you can, week in, week out. There’s no point raising your game for a team like Liverpool and winning and then getting beat the following week because you haven’t focused. You have to prepare for each game in exactly the same way.”

FANS

AC:
“Our fans are fantastic. They can really galvanise you, especially when you’re going through a tricky spell like we are now. We always used to say in the dressing room before the big games, 'we need to get the fans behind us.' If you start a game well, they always stick with you. You can feel their positive energy and that lifts you and you’re just focused on trying to do your job or get yourself a goal.”

BR: “When the fans get right behind you, they don’t show that they’re maybe a bit nervous, and they just do everything to back the team, then I think the lads really respond to that. I always think if someone makes one bad pass and the fans are like ‘arrghhh’, everyone gets nervous. When the fans get right behind the lads, the players feel it and they raise their performance. I’ll always remember the Barcelona game in ’84 when we were 2-0 down and we came back to Old Trafford and won 3-0. I honestly don’t think it would have happened without the fans, it’s the best atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at Old Trafford and they kept us going. They just give you that extra push you need.”

HISTORY

BR:
“There was always a lot of respect between the sides in my day. I played with about six or seven Liverpool players who were all in the England squad, the likes of Alan Kennedy, Phil Thompson, Phil Neal, Terry McDermott. They became your friends off the pitch but when we went on the pitch, it was a war. That’s how we looked at it. Beating Liverpool was always the best feeling but I think there is a great deal of respect that comes from the rivalry and the history the two clubs have. United went out in front in Europe by being the first English club to win the European Cup in ’68, but then Liverpool went on an unbelievable run in the 70’s. The two clubs are, of course, very close in the league title stakes and that history between them means both teams are always desperate to win this game. That takes it beyond games against Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal.”

AC: “In my day it was totally different to what Robbo has said. There was no going out for drinks together, and in the England squad there was a United table and a Liverpool table. That’s how much things changed and the rivalry became even more intense. Sir Alex was always just so desperate to win this match and as I said before, he was just angry before the game. The intensity in him to win this game home and away was huge, and that transmitted through to the players.”

BELIEF

BR:
“When I first came to the club we had to believe. Liverpool were dominant and winning titles more or less every season, but we did well against them in one-off games in the league and in the cup. So you had to have that belief. From where we are as a team at the moment, and the run of the form we’ve been on, I think it will be very difficult if we go behind on Sunday. But if the players keep working hard and believing in themselves, then we can get a result. We’re Man United and we can beat anyone on our day but the lads must believe that.”

AC: “Belief ran through our team, and we always had the mindset that we’d always beat Liverpool. If you go into the match with that mindset, then that’s half the battle and there weren’t many times when we didn’t win. You always have to believe. On Sunday, the lads need to have confidence in themselves and if we do go a goal down, then it will be harder because we are finding it hard to score goals. But if your mindset is right and you’re focused on creating as many chances as possible, then you have a great chance. We have to go into the game believing we can win.”

MEMORIES

AC:
“It was always feisty. I always looked forward to these games and more often than not we used to come away with three points. When the game was at Anfield, it didn’t matter what form I might have been in, the manager always used to play me. I had a good record there. I just loved the games, they meant so much to me. I still get that buzz from seeing those goals. The atmosphere in those games is something else. I remember one season at Anfield [in 1999], I scored, got sent off, won the game and the manager didn’t fine me… that was a good memory! But for me, the best game against them was on the 1999 FA Cup run. We were 1-0 down and ended up winning 2-1 in injury time. Say no more!”

BR:
“My better moments against Liverpool were away from Old Trafford. In the Charity Shield in ‘83, I scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Wembley and I could have got a hat-trick if all my studs hadn’t come out of my boots, meaning I slipped when I was one-on-one with Bruce Grobbelaar! Winning the FA Cup semi-final replay at Maine Road in ’85 and scoring a goal, and then winning the Cup was very special too. Nothing beats the feeling you get from winning this game.”
