__________________________________________________ __________ 13/09/2009 13:39 - ManUtd.com, Gemma Thompson in Istanbul Blog: Latest from Turkey ManUtd.com's Gemma Thompson is travelling with the squad to Istanbul for the Reds' opening Champions League clash of the season against Besiktas. Return here for regular updates, especially on Monday and Tuesday... Sunday 13 September 21:43 (local time) Just arrived at the team hotel after a four-hour flight from Stansted (incidentally, we flew over on one of U2’s tour planes!) There was no 'Welcome to Hell' intimidation at the airport, instead it was all very quiet. The players were in good spirits on the journey over, no doubt buoyed by Saturday's excellent result at Spurs. Thankfully, the heavy rain and flooding that hit Istanbul last week appears to have subsided - it's currently around 22 degrees and dry. I'm off to grab a bite to eat now before heading to bed. I'll be venturing into the city tomorrow and don’t forget I’ll bring you the latest team news from Sir Alex’s press conference on Monday tea-time, as well as news from training at Besiktas' İnönü Stadium. Bye for now! 14:00 I'll be in the air, en route to Istanbul, at this time. My next entry will be this evening hopefully, following our arrival at the team hotel... internet connection permitting! If there's a problem, I'll update through the guys back at Old Trafford on Monday morning. 13:17 Less than an hour until take-off and I can confirm the 23 players who are travelling to Turkey are as follows, in no particular order: Dimitar Berbatov, Wes Brown, Michael Carrick, Anderson, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Ben Amos, Michael Owen, Ryan Giggs, Tomasz Kuszczak, Darren Fletcher, Gary Neville, John O'Shea, Ji-sung Park, Fabio, Ben Foster, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic, Nani. 12:28 I've just checked in at Stansted airport following our journey down from Manchester. We'll soon be joined by Sir Alex, the players and the backroom staff following their overnight stay in London, ahead of our flight at 14:00. I imagine the mood on their bus was very upbeat after the team's excellent win at White Hart Lane - a result which sets us up nicely for a big week, starting with Besiktas on Tuesday night. 08:34 Sat on the coach having flashbacks to Rome - it seems such a long time ago now. Can't believe the Champions League is starting all over again; hopefully we can kick things off with a win. United legend Bryan Robson thinks the Reds will do exactly that. Just been having a chat with him on the coach and he's going for a 2-1 victory. 07:45 Just about to board the coach from Manchester. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get down to London for the Spurs game last night because of a friend's wedding, but I'm on my way now with a number of other United staff. We're heading for Stansted airport, before flying to Istanbul with the team, who stayed over in the capital, just after lunch. Last edited by rondwisan; 14-09-2009 at 08:17 AM.. |

13/09/2009 20:52 - ManUtd.com, Gemma Thompson in Istanbul
Robbo predicts Turkish delight Bryan Robson fully expects to see a United victory in Turkey on Tuesday as the Reds look to lay the ghosts of last season’s Champions League final to rest. Tuesday’s Group B clash against Besiktas is United’s first European outing since the hugely disappointing defeat to Barcelona in May. Robson says the players will be itching to get this season’s Champions League campaign off to a winning start and put Rome well and truly behind them. “It’s important we kick things off with a win,” the United legend told ManUtd.com. “As much as it was a fantastic achievement to get to a second consecutive Champions League final, the way things turned out meant it was a really disappointing way to finish the season. "The lads know it was a poor performance on the night, but football is like that, you have lots of ups and downs. “The challenge is there for them again this season and hopefully they can bounce back from Rome and start off this season in the best possible way with a win.” Robson, who has travelled with the team to Istanbul in his role as a club ambassador, has fond memories of past trips to Turkey for both club and country, apart from the night the Reds were knocked out of Europe by Galatasaray in November 1993 when he also needed stitches in an arm wound following an off-the-pitch incident with local police. He is well aware of the hostile atmosphere United will face at the Besiktas' İnönü Stadium on Tuesday evening, but insists Sir Alex’s men are experienced enough to handle it. “It’s always an intimidating atmosphere in Turkey,” he said. “The fans are very passionate and try to make things daunting for opposition teams, and not just at the stadium - I've known them to stand outside the hotel singing trying to keep you awake before you play! “The lads will know what to expect though and I’m sure they won’t be fazed. They’ll just concentrate on getting the job done.” |
