Fergie has promised to rest his star names when United host the Seasiders at Old Trafford so they are fresh for next weekend’s Wembley clash with Barcelona.

This would leave Rooney and team-mates in the stands for a game where United will aim to celebrate receiving the Premier League trophy in style.

Blackpool desperately need to win to stand a chance of avoiding the drop.

There are fears from their relegation rivals that an under-strength United side would give Ian Holloway’s men an unfair advantage as they fight to stay up.

But Rooney insists he wants to play to sharpen up ahead of the biggest game of the season.

The England striker said: “I think it’s down to the manager to pick what teams he wants to play in the two games, but I’m sure all the players want to play. You want to play to keep right and keep ticking over.”

He added: “I feel I’ve been playing well and enjoying my role in the team and I’m hoping I can end the season with another trophy.

“They are moments you treasure. So all the players are looking forward to the game and we want to win.

“We don’t want to not win and have the celebrations after. It will be much better if we can win the game.”

Rio Ferdinand insists that rules on team selection are baffling, with United facing a fine if they make sweeping changes against Blackpool.

The England ace Tweeted: “Why have 25-man squad if your hammered for utilising it?! Don’t make sense.

“Btw when we changed 8/9 players (and won) for 1 or 2 games earlier in the season I didn’t hear the call for docking points then?!

“Who was moaning when we changed all of our team vs Schalke in the CL semi final (and won)??”

Flying winger Nani has revealed that being less selfish has turned him into a better player.

He said: “When I arrived at this club I was playing a lot for myself and trying to score by myself.

“But I have been learning with the coaches and players to play for the team.”
