FIVE AMAZING OBJECTS FROM SIR ALEX'S REIGN

To celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson’s 79th birthday, we're reliving some of the key moments from his epic career as Manchester United manager by showing you items of memorabilia.

Although an extremely difficult task, we’ve managed to narrow down the list to just ten notable events and here we tell the story of the first five, featuring items from both the club’s museum and Sir Alex’s private collection.

1. SIGNED BALL FROM HIS FIRST GAME

Sir Alex's arrival at Old Trafford on 6 November 1986 sparked an instant media frenzy with everyone keen to catch a glimpse of the new man in United’s hot seat. Two days after his official appointment, he travelled with the team to Oxford for his first fixture in charge. Unfortunately, on the day, the injury-stricken Reds failed to deliver and crumbled against the previous season’s League Cup winners Oxford United. Signed by both teams shortly after the 0-2 defeat, the ball represents one of the biggest turning points in United’s history - the beginning of the Ferguson era.

2. TACTICS BOARD

Despite featuring many established international players, the squad Sir Alex inherited was a team in decline. Faced with serious fitness issues in the ranks, he kicked off his reign by demanding new levels of professionalism from his players, strengthening the team with new signings and revamping the scouting system. This tactics board accompanied the Scot to away games during his early career with the Reds, and was used by the boss as he turned the underperforming Old Trafford side into FA Cup winners and league title contenders.

3. 1990 FA CUP WINNER’S MEDAL

Despite the initial improvement in form, Sir Alex’s United continued to underperform well into his third full season with the club. After a disappointing start to the 1989/90 campaign, which included a bruising 5-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, the Reds eventually ended the season 13th in the table, 31 points behind champions Liverpool. Under mounting pressure, the team managed to secure a place in the FA Cup final. Following a thrilling 3-3 draw, the final went to a replay, in which a single strike by Lee Martin secured Sir Alex's first trophy as United boss. The medal marks the start of a glorious spell, in which silverware arrived at Old Trafford at a steady rate, and is the first of five FA Cup winner’s medals presented to him during his career with the Reds.

4. 1991 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS’ CUP SHIRT

With English clubs allowed back in European competitions, following a five-year ban, FA Cup holders United were invited to enter the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1990. Having won the competition with Aberdeen, Sir Alex expertly led United to the 1991 final in Rotterdam, where his side beat Barcelona 2-1 to lift the trophy. This shirt was worn by the man who scored our two goals, Mark Hughes, as the Reds won the club’s second continental trophy after a 33-year gap since the 1968 European Cup.

5. MINIATURE PREMIER LEAGUE TROPHY 1992/93

Another key turning point in Sir Alex’s career at United came in the 1992/93 season. After narrowly missing out on the league championship to Leeds United in the 1991/92 campaign, Sir Alex made a bold move and brought his rivals' talisman, Eric Cantona, to Old Trafford. The arrival of the Frenchman kickstarted our two decades of dominance in the Premier League with the first title clinched in its inaugural season. United’s 26-year wait to be champions of England again was finally over. With the competition still in its infancy and with medals yet to be designed, both the manager and his players were instead presented with engraved miniature trophies to mark the occasion.

Happy birthday Sir Alex... and Happy New Year!

FIVE MORE ARTEFACTS FROM SIR ALEX'S EPIC CAREER

Here we present part two of our Sir Alex Ferguson birthday feature, recalling his Manchester United career with the aid of memorabilia from the club's museum and his own private collection.

In part one, we covered the first seven years from his debut fixture as United boss in 1986 through to the first Premier League title in 1993.

The story continues, naturally, with the Double-winning campaign of 1993/94.

6. THE MANAGER OF THE YEAR 1994

The inaugural Manager of the Year award was presented to Alex Ferguson for retaining the title in the historic 1993/94 Double-winning season. With the addition of Roy Keane to the squad, Peter Schmeichel already established in goal and Ryan Giggs emerging successfully from a group that would later be known as the Class of 92, United’s form in the Premier League was superb. By Christmas, the Reds secured a 13-point gap at the top of the table, eventually winning the campaign eight points clear of runners-up Blackburn Rovers. The ride in the FA Cup proved to be a bumpier one. With the campaign saved by a brilliant volley from Mark Hughes in the dying seconds of the semi-final, the Reds travelled to Wembley to face Chelsea. On the day of the final, two penalties from Cantona gave the Reds the confidence to eventually beat the London club 4-0 and become Double winners for the first time in the club’s history.

7. THE TREBLE MEDALS

Three years after his young side defied a pundit's statement that “you can’t win anything with kids'' to win another Double in 1996, Sir Alex's men went one better to claim an unprecedented Treble. These three medals were presented to the manager over an 11-day period at the end of a remarkable 1998/99 campaign. The team embodied the never-say-die attitude of its manager in a season full of intense drama, memorable goals and back-from-the-dead victories. A wonder goal from Giggs in the FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal, Solskjaer’s late winner against Liverpool, and two goals in stoppage time in Barcelona have since become an integral part of United’s folklore.

8. KNIGHTHOOD

Following the dramatic events in Barcelona and the Treble triumph, the great Scot received a knighthood for his services to football and became Sir Alex. Having joined the elite group of sports personalities to be awarded with the title, he went down in history as the only manager to win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in one season.

9. MINIATURE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TROPHY 2007/08

Following a swashbuckling campaign in the Premier League, the Reds retained the title and travelled to Moscow to face Chelsea in the Champions League final. This miniature trophy was presented to Sir Alex following a nerve-shredding penalty shoot-out, in which van der Sar’s sudden-death penalty save sealed the Scot’s second success in the competition with the Reds. The memorable night in Russia also marked another great milestone in United’s history as the manager's most famous youth-system graduate Ryan Giggs made his club-record 759th appearance.

10. PREMIER LEAGUE MEDAL 2012/13

After initially announcing his retirement in 2001, Sir Alex remained in United’s hot seat for another 12 years. In his final season with the Reds, he led the club to a record 20th league title. This medal was presented to the manager following his final Old Trafford fixture on 12 May 2013. The longest serving and the most successful boss in the club’s history, Sir Alex managed the Reds for a total number of 1,500 competitive matches. During the course of his spell at Old Trafford, he won 38 trophies, including 13 out of a possible 21 Premier League titles. It was an epic reign that established United as the giants of English football and a true global superpower, supported by millions of fans around the world.

Happy birthday Sir Alex...and Happy New Year!

Sir Alex Ferguson will join his old sparring partner Sir Kenny Dalglish and Gareth Southgate in one-off fundraising event to support football's fight against dementia

* Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Gareth Southgate will help raise funds
* Trio are to join forces for one-off event in conjunction with Sportsmail campaign
* Fundraiser will be streamed on January 15 with each of the protagonists at home
* Fans who buy tickets via a donation are then able to ask the three men questions

Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Gareth Southgate have joined forces to support football’s fight against dementia.

The trio will take part in a one-off event to raise funds for research into the link between football and the disease — in conjunction with Sportsmail’s campaign — and support those suffering from dementia and their families.

In an exclusive interview with Sportsmail, former Manchester United boss Ferguson says: ‘It’s the right thing to do. Football has a duty to look at the situation and people like myself owe it to the game to see if there is something we can do about it.’

Sir Kenny Dalglish (left) and Sir Alex Ferguson (right) will take part in the one-off event. England manager Gareth Southgate will also be participating from home on January 15

Ferguson will be joined by his old sparring partner and Liverpool icon Dalglish and England manager Southgate at a live, streamed fundraiser on January 15.

Each football personality will be in their own home for the event, hosted by Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates, and fans who buy tickets via a donation can ask questions.

Organisers say no subject will be off-limits at the groundbreaking event, which they are hopeful can raise close to £500,000.

‘If me and Kenny are on the same platform, sparks will fly,’ added Ferguson.

In November, we launched our campaign calling on football to finally tackle its dementia scandal.

Ferguson's great friend Sir Bobby Charlton (right) has been diagnosed with the disease. Southgate, Dalglish and Ferguson will be answering questions to those who have donated

The evening has been arranged by former Sky Sports executive Trevor East, who said: ‘The inspiration came from watching a live streamed event organised by Lockdown Theatre and featuring Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench, among others.

‘It was a great evening’s entertainment and raised a huge sum for the performing arts.’

East, who is a Plymouth Argyle director, added: ‘It just seemed a fantastic idea in these lockdown times.

‘Having lost so many old team-mates and friends to this awful disease, Sir Alex, Sir Kenny and Gareth didn’t hesitate in offering their services — which we are sure will raise well into six figures for this important cause.’

Funds will go to the Alzheimer’s Society’s Sport United Against Dementia drive, which supports pioneering research .

Money will also be given to the League Managers Association’s In The Game charity, which benefits members suffering from dementia and their families.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON HELPING FIGHT AGAINST DEMENTIA

Sir Alex Ferguson is a special guest on this Friday's Team Talk with Legends Live - which is raising funds to aid in the fight against dementia.

The Manchester United icon will be joined by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Anfield great Sir Kenny Dalglish and England boss Gareth Southgate, with Kelly Cates on hosting duties.

This week's event will support The Alzheimer's Society's 'Sport United Against Dementia' and the LMA's 'In The Game' charity.

Nobby Stiles suffered from dementia before sadly passing away last year and fellow Old Trafford legend Sir Bobby Charlton has also been diagnosed with the illness.

“It's littered right throughout the football spectrum,” Sir Alex told the Daily Mail recently. “Jeff Astle, Martin Peters, Ray Wilson.

“And United have had a serious blow themselves with Nobby and Bill Foulkes.

”It's been very sad. Bobby's not been well for a while. The gates have been opened by Nobby's passing and Bobby's diagnosis. They are huge figures, it has to create an awareness.

“I don't know what the Professional Footballers' Association is doing but the League Managers' Association is concerned and [their chief-executive] Richard Bevan has been fantastic.

“We have to see what we can do to help,” he insisted. “Football has a duty to look at the situation. People like myself owe it to the game to see if there's something we can do.“

The online event takes place between 19:00 GMT and 20:30 GMT on Friday 15 January, with tickets priced at £25 each.

Ticket-holders will receive an exclusive password to log on to the discussion and even be invited to pose questions as the guests will discuss key issues within the game and, no doubt, look ahead to the big match between Liverpool and United at the weekend.

Sir Alex Ferguson reveals his most cherished memory at Manchester United was ending fans 'suffering' in 1993 after 26 years without a league title
Manchester United had not won a league title since 1966-67 before the 1993 win

* Sir Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies across a successful career at Old Trafford
* But the 79-year-old has revealed his first Premier League title was the sweetest
* Ferguson was talking ahead of the Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In documentary

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his most cherished memory during his highly decorated career as Manchester United manager was ending the club's 26-year wait for a league title in the 1992-93 campaign.

Before the legendary former boss took over, United had not won a league title since 1966-67 under Matt Busby.

But after signing Eric Cantona from Leeds for £1.2million and a crucial victory against Sheffield Wednesday thanks to two late Steve Bruce goals, the Red Devils finished top of the league and won the first Premier League title by 10 points from Aston Villa.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed his most cherished memory during his time at Manchester United. According to legendary former boss Ferguson, the 1992-93 Premier League title was the best

United had not won a league title for 26 years, in 1966-67 under Matt Busby, before 1993 win

And Ferguson opened up on the widespread suffering and anxiety the trophy ended among United supporters.

In a promotion session for upcoming documentary Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, he said: 'Oh, the day we won the league for the first time. God almighty! I couldn't get out the car park!

'There were thousands of them. I went there in the afternoon because they wanted a photograph taken with the trophy and I went there at about three o'clock. There were thousands there and I couldn't get out of my car, they were engulfing me.

'It was unbelievable. So what you were doing that day was satisfying the anxiety and relief of 26 years. These supporters had been suffering for 26 years and finally that day they showed their love for me. They could have made me President for that day!'

The £1.2million signing of French striker Eric Cantona from Leeds was crucial in the season. Ferguson, now 79, was speaking ahead of the Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In documentary

Ferguson went on to manage 1,500 matches in all competitions during his 26-year spell at Old Trafford, winning a shade under 60 per cent of his matches across the longest managerial reign in post-war English football.

He also provided 38 trophies, including 13 Premier Leagues, five FA Cups, two Champions Leagues and 11 Premier League manager of the season awards.

The 79-year-old also described the difficulty of releasing young players as amongst the hardest feelings as a manager.

He added: 'That is the worst thing, having to let a young player go. All his ambitions and hopes and desires are about playing for Manchester United. When you take that away from him, it's a sore, sore thing. So I hated that.'

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson says European Super League would be a 'move away from 70 years of football history', with the Red Devils one of six Premier League sides involved

* There have been reports that clubs could take part in a European Super League
* Manchester United are one of six Premier League clubs who could be involved
* Sir Alex Ferguson says the proposal would end '70 years of football history'

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says a breakaway European Super League would be a move away from 70 years of football history and that fans love the Champions League as it is.

Media reports on Sunday said that six Premier League clubs, including United, had signed up to plans for a breakaway league which would be a rival to UEFA's Champions League.

Ferguson, who won the Champions League twice with Manchester United after having European success with Scottish club Aberdeen, said that he enjoyed 'special nights' in the Champions League.

'Talk of a Super League is a move away from 70 years of European club football. Both as a player for a provincial team Dunfermline in the 60s and as a manager at Aberdeen winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, for a small provincial club in Scotland it was like climbing Mount Everest,' he told Reuters.

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has hit out at plans for a European Super League. Manchester United are one of six Premier League sides who could sign up for the super league

'Everton are spending £500 million to build a new stadium with the ambition to play in Champions League. Fans all over love the competition as it is,' he said.

'In my time at United, we played in four Champions League finals and they were always the most special of nights.

'I'm not sure Manchester United are involved in this, as I am not part of the decision making process,' he added.

Gary Neville, Ferguson's former captain, interrupted his commentary on Sky Sports' coverage of United's match against Burnley to criticise the breakaway plans.

'I think to bring forward proposals in the midst of COVID, in the midst of the economic crisis, is an absolute scandal,' he said.

'United, and the rest of the 'Big Six' clubs that have signed up to it, against the rest of the Premier League, should be ashamed of themselves,' he said.

'I can't concentrate on the game... they should deduct all six teams that have signed up to it. Deduct points from them all,' he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In will be in cinemas from May 27 and available on Amazon Prime from May 29

'I used to lie in bed thinking about themes where I could address the players that would make an impact on them,' Ferguson says in a clip from the film.

'I would talk about miners, shipyard workers, welders, toolmakers, people who’ve come from poor backgrounds. And I used to ask them, what did your grandfather do? What did your father do?

'But I have to get the feeling inside them that what their grandfathers worked for and their grandmotheres is part of them. And they have to display that meaning.

The manager would tell his players about the importance of upbringing and identity

'Taking away all the trophies I’ve won and the great players I’ve had, I think it’s a thing about life. It’s a fact of life that where we come from is important. You come out with an identity. I come from Govan, I’m a Govan boy.'

Produced by BAFTA Award-winner Andrew Macdonald and BAFTA Award-nominee Allon Reich, the film is a DNA and Passion Pictures production in association with Ventureland.

The 79-year-old won 49 trohpies during his managerial career, 38 of which came during his 27-year spell as United boss.

Speaking after seeing the final edit of the film, Ferguson said: 'It was a powerful moment seeing the final cut of the film. There were times which nearly brought me to tears, it was incredibly emotional.'

Football fans will be able to watch the documentary in UK cinemas from May 27 and will be available on Amazon Prime in the UK and Ireland from May 29.
