Anthony Martial needs to transform into a 'killer' in the box, warns Frank Leboeuf with Manchester United striker STILL yet to score Premier League goal this season

* Anthony Martial's first league effort on target this term came after 292 minutes
* The 24-year-old's only goals this season have come in the Champions League
* Bruno Fernandes' retaken penalty secured all three points for Manchester United

Frank Leboeuf says Anthony Martial needs to become a 'killer' in the box as the Frenchman's Premier League goal drought continues.

The 24-year-old saw a presentable opportunity in the first half of Saturday's unconvincing 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion go begging when he was denied by excellent former United man Sam Johnstone.

Incredibly, that was Martial's first shot on target of the league campaign after four hours and 52 minutes on the field and his only goals in 15 appearances for club and country this term have come in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Martial has been similarly ineffectual on international duty recently, failing to score in France's 1-0 win over Portugal despite having several clear opportunities.

His compatriot Leboeuf is becoming increasingly concerned about the forward's form.

'I'm worried about Anthony Martial,' he told ESPN. 'He is a fantastic player and when he's confident, he is OK.

'He played with the international team and missed three chances against Portugal.

'He missed another chance today. For a world-class player, it was an easy chance. He has to be a killer. I’m not pleased with any of those players. What I saw was a poor performance.'

Anthony Martial has not been able to find that clinical edge for Manchester United this season. The Frenchman's only senior goal for his country came in September 2016 in a win over Italy

After a first half at Old Trafford with little to write home about, the second period more than made up for the earlier lack of drama.

West Brom were awarded a penalty just after the break when Conor Gallagher went down under the challenge of Bruno Fernandes, only for referee David Coote to overturn the decision after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Six minutes later, another foul on Gallagher went unpunished and the ball found its way to Juan Mata, whose cross hit Darnell Furlong's arm in the box for a penalty.

Johnstone thought he had got his team out of trouble with a sprawling save, but a retake was ordered because the 27-year-old had strayed off his line, with Bruno Fernandes making no mistake at the second time of asking.

United now face Basaksehir on Tuesday before returning to league action next Sunday against Southampton, while the Baggies face fellow strugglers Sheffield United at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urges Anthony Martial to 'kick on' as Manchester United boss backs misfiring star to rediscover his goalscoring touch after barren start to season

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Anthony Martial to rediscover his form
* The Manchester United striker had a great season in 2019-20, scoring 23 goals
* However, Martial has failed to continue that form into the current campaign
* Solskjaer expects Martial to make big steps and get back to his goalscoring best

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Anthony Martial that he cannot rest on his laurels at Manchester United after a difficult start to the new season.

Martial was United's top scorer with 23 goals last term but has only scored twice so far with both coming in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

As United look to avenge their 2-1 defeat in Istanbul in Tuesday's return match at Old Trafford, Solskjaer has demanded more from the 24-year-old Frenchman.

The United boss believes Martial's sending-off against Tottenham last month and a possible lack of confidence may be to blame for his problems.

'Anthony showed he made big strides last season, now it's time again to make even bigger strides and to develop more,' said Solskjaer.

'He scored 23 goals last season, which was a big return. He took big strides towards becoming the striker he can be.

'Every season is a challenge and you cannot rest on your laurels at Man United. There are demands on every position.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told the misfiring Anthony Martial not to rest on his laurels. The Manchester United star has not scored in the league after a great campaign in 2019-20. Solskjaer says he expects Martial to make big strides ahead of the visit of Istanbul Basaksehir

'We want Anthony to kick on. For France against Portugal he showed his qualities as a centre-forward getting into positions but Rui Patricio made a few good saves and that might have affected Anthony's confidence.

'His conversion rate has always been good, but at the moment keepers have made good saves against him.

'Anthony is no different from other players, he's not had a pre-season as normal and is getting ready for peak form.

'He had a three-game suspension, so he's lost too much football. But he scored against Basaksehir last time, good header, and I hope he'll get to his best again.'

'Struggling' Anthony Martial should have put Man United 2-1 up before PSG roared back to leave their Champions League hopes in the balance, says Paul Scholes... but he and Rio Ferdinand insist Solskjaer will be 'pleased' with his side's display

* Paul Scholes says Anthony Martial should have put United ahead against PSG
* The United star missed a gilt edged opportunity to give the hosts the lead at 1-1
* The Parisians eventually took control of the game and emerged 3-1 winners
* Scholes and Rio Ferdinand said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be happy with display

Paul Scholes has said 'struggling' Manchester United star Anthony Martial should have put his side ahead against Paris Saint-Germain before the Red Devils eventually fell to defeat in the Champions League.

United had been on top in the feisty Group H clash and looked the more likely to take the lead early in the second half with Martial, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani combining to great effect at Old Trafford.

However, the Frenchman wasted a couple of glorious opportunities, the best of which was ballooned over the crossbar when he would have surely scored had he hit the target at the back post with the score at 1-1.

Anthony Martial should have put Man United 2-1 up against PSG, says former star Paul Scholes. The Frenchman missed a glorious chance to put United ahead, but ballooned his shot over

And United legend Scholes has said that the 24-year-old should have done much better with the opportunities presented to him, before the Parisians eventually ran out 3-1 winners.

'United have paid for their missed chances,' Scholes told BT Sport after the final whistle.

'Martial's chances were the ones, anything on target is a goal. He is struggling for goals at the minute. Martial will know, he doesn't need telling, he should score.'

However, despite the disappointing result, both Scholes and former United defender Rio Ferdinand agreed that boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be pleased with his side's performance, even in losing 3-1.

Scholes said Martial is 'struggling' and should've converted the opportunity presented to him. Scholes and Rio Ferdinand said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be happy with the performance

United had the French champions on the back foot for much of the contest, but lost their grip on the game following the dismissal of Fred with around 20 minutes remaining.

'I think he will be pleased with the whole performance. Yes the result wasn't what he wanted but it was an excellent performance,' Scholes said.

'Ole will be pleased with the front three in terms of everything leading up to the chance on goal was beautiful,' Ferdinand added.

Solskjaer echoed the sentiments of his former team-mates, telling BT Sport that his side needed to be more 'clinical' in front of goal.

'It was a very good game of football, which deserved fans first of all,' he said. 'When you see the team sheets you think there might be goals in this game.

'There were chances for both teams. With a bit more clinical finishing we should have finished the game because they were there for the taking. We had some big chances, some big moment.

'That is the difference, the clinical moments. You can say all the possession in the middle but all games are decided in front of goal.'

United need to go to Leipzig and get a result next week to reach the last-16 of the Champions League.

Solskjaer will be without Fred after he saw red for two yellow cards, the first of which could easily have been a straight red for a headbutt on Leandro Paredes.

'I thought he was a bit lucky to stay on when the referee decided to give him anything,' admitted Solskjaer.

'Fred shouldn't put his head towards him. I don't think he touched him but you don't so that. He was a bit lucky. It's either nothing or red card.

'We spoke about staying calm and staying your feet and the second yellow was nowhere near a foul - and Ander knows that as well.

'It wasn't a foul. Fred played really disciplined second half but when he makes a tackle light that you can't fault the boy.'

United captain Harry Maguire sympathised with his team-mate, saying: 'It's strange how he gave a yellow card [in the first half].

'It's either a red card or nothing. It's not a yellow card [in the second half]. He wins the ball. I was two yards away, the linesman was five yards. Every time you go to the floor - especially in Europe - you get a booking.'

The decision also perplexed PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.

'From the sidelines I had the impression that he gave a headbutt to Paredes,' said the PSG boss.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Anthony Martial is 'getting better and better' after netting in victory against Aston Villa - while also praising Paul Pogba's physicality in win which moved Man United level on points with Liverpool

* Anthony Martial scored just his second Premier League goal of the season
* The Man United forward has suffered knocks and was sent off against Tottenham
* But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is now ready to put that behind him now
* The Norwegian also praised midfielder Paul Pogba for his physicality in Villa win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Anthony Martial is 'getting better and better' after helping Manchester United go joint-top of the Premier League table with rivals Liverpool following victory against Aston Villa.

The France international stooped to head home Aaron Wan Bissaka's cross at the near post to give United the lead, before Bruno Fernandes' penalty saw them clinch a 2-1 win after Bertrand Traore had equalised for the visitors.

Martial, 25, had only scored one Premier League goal this season prior to his goal on Friday evening- which came in a win against Sheffield United last month - and had a difficult start to the campaign with knocks and being sent off in the home drubbing by Tottenham Hotspur.

But speaking to Sky Sports, Solskjaer admits that while his confidence may have been dented by events earlier in the season, he is now on the up again.

Asked what Martial could do to improve on his goal return this season, Solskjaer said: 'Well, keep playing as he did today. Get on the ball, link with the players, and be in between the posts.

'He's had chances all season and maybe his confidence has had a knock a little bit earlier with the sending off and some niggles he's had, but now he is firing and getting better and better.'

Martial's compatriot Paul Pogba won the penalty after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz just two minutes after Traore had restored parity for Dean Smith's men at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Anthony Martial is improving once again after helping Manchester United go joint-top of the Premier League table. But boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists that the Frenchman is ready to fire for the club again

But while he went to ground on that occasion, Norwegian Solskjaer believed that the World Cup winner had shown himself to be back to full power and praised his physicality in helping combat Villa's style.

'He's getting better and better, fitter and fitter, and I think he played well tonight,' Solskjaer added.

'They [Villa] are a physical side. There was loads of challenges, one against ones, and Paul is one of these boys that can hold players off and get hold of it for us. Maybe, not just Paul, we were too keen on playing the killer pass because we knew they would drop off.

'There were maybe other spaces in behind that we should have used.'

Solskjaer was also critical of how his side defended in the last 10 minutes but insists despite his comments that he was 'delighted' with securing the win, but would not be drawn on whether they could take the Premier League crown off Jurgen Klopp's side.

'I think we should have seen the game out in a better way,' Solskjaer added. 'It was like it was a cup final or the last game of the season. We need to learn how to play out games better when we are in the lead.

'Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted with three points and very happy with the performance, but there's always things we need to improve on.

'It's early on in the season and we shouldn't be too carried away with three points. We have improved, we are getting better and the I think the league and the season is going to be so tight.

'There is going to be different and difficult games, strange results - we've just got to keep working and improving as a team. We've done that since Project Restart started.'

Manchester United beef up security for Anthony Martial following disgusting racist abuse after Sheffield United defeat as French forward's wife reveals pair have received death threats from online trolls

* Axel Tuanzebe and Marcus Rashford have also been racially abused this week

Anthony Martial has asked Manchester United to help with security at his house after racist trolls targeted him and his wife online.

The France forward, 25, was subjected to sickening abuse following the club's home defeat at the hands of Sheffield United last week.

Martial's wife, Melanie, subsequently took to Instagram to reveal that she had been subjected to further abuse which included death threats to both herself and her husband.

Sources have disclosed that the concerned and angered couple, who have a child, approached the club following the vile messages last week. United have declined to comment, but are understood to have been happy to assist.

They stepped in to help executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward when flares were launched at his home last year and graffiti was scrawled on the walls.

United beefed up security at Woodward's house and launched a review of safety measures there. They are expected to do likewise for Martial and his family.

In a desperate few days, defender Axel Tuanzebe was also targeted following the defeat by the Blades and on Saturday night, following United's 0-0 draw at Arsenal, Marcus Rashford became the latest of the club's black players to be singled out.

Martial, Axel Tuanzebe (L) and Marcus Rashford (R) received disgusting racist abuse this week

The forward, 23, took to social media to condemn those involved, describing the messages as 'humanity and social media at its worst'.

Greater Manchester Police put out their own statement, saying they were aware of the 'deeply upsetting' and 'hateful' messages and would be 'investigating thoroughly'.

United, who will cooperate fully with the police, have already condemned those involved and have called on social media platforms to create verifiable and identifiable accounts to ensure perpetrators can be held to account in an unregulated environment.

It comes as Sportsmail reveals today that English football's leaders will challenge social media companies to improve their self-governance and protect players from the abuse — and Prince William has joined the call for action.

William, who is also the FA's president, said: 'Racist abuse — whether on the pitch, in the stands, or on social media — is despicable and it must stop now.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Anthony Martial to rekindle his form as Manchester United boss throws support behind misfiring Frenchman amid goalscoring drought

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed striker Anthony Martial to rediscover his form
* The Frenchman has scored just five goals from 25 games this campaign
* Solskjaer, however, says it is only a matter of time before he is back to his best

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Anthony Martial to come through his lean spell after the Manchester United striker suffered an alarming loss of form.

United's 23-goal top scorer last season has only been on target five times in 25 games this term and has not scored on his last seven outings.

However, Solskjaer believes it is only a matter of time before Martial is back to his best as United prepare to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday evening.

'His talent will always take him through, I've got no doubt about that whatsoever,' said the United manager.

'Yes, he's missed a couple of chances but that happens to everyone. It's just being ready when the chance comes.

'Just be mentally ready, don't be frustrated. I've been there myself going through patches when you don't really score goals.

'He keeps practising in training so we know how good he is and we know he will come good.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (R) has backed Anthony Martial (L) to rekindle his goalscoring form. The Manchester United striker has struck just five goals from 25 games so far this season. However, Solskjaer says Martial has the talent to come through this barren goal spell

Martial and team-mate Axel Tuanzebe were subjected to racist abuse after Wednesday's shock home defeat by bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, and Solskjaer believes social media platforms must do more to tackle the problem.

'It's just incredible we still have this abuse in 2021,' said Solskjaer. 'We've been campaigning for a long time now with the Premier League and I think it's working, but there are still some people that haven't got it.

'They hide behind social media to be anonymous. It's unacceptable and it's disgusting. They're not Man United fans when this happens. We're all standing behind every single one of our players.

'I think the social media platforms need to be looked at. If you can create an anonymous account and abuse people, it's not right. We'll work together with everyone to stop this nonsense.'

Default Re: Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial is on the brink of 250 appearances for Manchester United but the jury is no longer out... we would know by now if he could spearhead a title-winning team at Old Trafford

* Anthony Martial is set for his 250th Manchester United game against Everton
* But the wider world still remains undecided on the Frenchman's quality
* He is 25 now and into his sixth season at Old Trafford after arriving in 2015
* If he was the man to lead the line in a title-winning team we would know by now

If Anthony Martial plays for Manchester United against Everton, it will be his 250th appearance for the club.

That is more than Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul McGrath, Eric Cantona and Duncan Edwards. More than Andrei Kanchelskis, Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke and Jaap Stam.

More than Robin van Persie, Carlos Tevez and Alexis Sanchez put together.

And, we are told, the jury is still out. Which means it's not. If it is the 250th game and the wider world remains undecided, the jury is pretty much in.

It was in on all the players listed above, including Sanchez, and in considerably less than 250 games. And it is in on Martial, really.

This is his sixth season at United and if he was the man to lead the line in a title-winning team we would know by now.

Martial scored twice against Southampton this week and won a penalty with a rather unimpressive dive, but United were 4-0 and one player up by the time he was introduced as a half-time substitute.

In the biggest games, he is regularly kept out of a central role by a striker nine years his senior, Edinson Cavani. He scores more frequently and works harder. The jury isn't undecided on that, either.

It is not Martial's fault that he arrived with the tag of the world's most expensive teenager, but he is 25 now. He has had plenty of time to lose that baggage.

And he looked to have finally done so last season, 23 goals in 48 games in all competitions. Yet this campaign has again been underwhelming.

Anthony Martial is in line for his 250th Manchester United appearance against Everton. He has not become the player United thought they were getting six years ago

For all the glimpses of potential, United now have three forwards most would select ahead of Martial. Not just Cavani, but Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, too.

There is another young striker, Joe Hugill, making great strides with the academy who scored four times against Liverpool's Under 23s. He is 17, the age at which Martial made his professional debut for Lyon. His time will also come.

Returns for Martial and Rashford have, until now, been similar. This season, however Rashford is leaving him behind — 0.47 goals per game, to Martial's 0.25. Cavani's record is better, too, despite this being his first season in English football.

So the jury is no more out on Martial than it is on Scott McTominay (112 games) or Bruno Fernandes (54 games). If he had become the player United thought, there wouldn't even be a conversation.
