Marcus Rashford was ALWAYS going to take Manchester United's next penalty, reveals Bruno Fernandes after passing up on a hat-trick to maintain his team-mate's 'confidence'

* Bruno Fernandes could have sealed hat-trick when awarded spot-kick in first half
* Instead Marcus Rashford stepped up from 12 yards but that was always the plan

Marcus Rashford was always going to take Manchester United's next penalty, according to Bruno Fernandes.

United's midfield star Fernandes could have sealed a hat-trick when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were awarded a spot-kick in the 35th minute of their 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday night.

Instead striker Rashford stepped up from 12 yards and Fernandes revealed after the game that was always the plan.

'But after the game (against West Brom) in the Premier League I told Rashy he will take the next one. I remembered that.

'Also Rashy is one of the top scorers in the Champions League so I think it will be important for him to keep going there and taking that confidence.

Forward Marcus Rashford was always going to take Manchester United's next penalty

'As I say, it doesn't matter who takes the penalties, the most important (thing) is scoring. When the team scores, I score too.'

Fernandes scored the winner from the spot in United's 1-0 win over West Brom last weekend.

Sam Johnstone palmed Fernandes' first penalty effort away, but was penalised for straying off his line during the midfielder's run-up, and Fernandes scored with the retake.

It is not the first time he has missed his first penalty and then scored when ordered to retake this campaign. He saw his first effort saved by Keylor Navas in United's 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain last month but again was given the chance to redeem himself by the officials.

The Portuguese has scored four penalties so far this season and missed one - in United's 4-1 win over Newcastle - however his spot-kick technique has created controversy.

Ian Wright has called for Fernandes' jumping penalty technique to be banned after he used it twice during the narrow win over West Brom as the Arsenal legend insisted the spot-kick style favoured by Chelsea midfielder Jorginho isn't 'fair' on goalkeepers.

'It is [difficult for goalkeepers],' Wright said on BBC's Match of the Day.

'And then you've got forwards jumping up, doing this, doing that sort of stuff and the goalie can't move his foot off.

'They should stop people jumping and that, they should have to make a full... just run at the ball and hit it. If they can move and the goalies can't, that's not fair.'

When asked by fellow pundit Gary Lineker: 'Are you going to have a law that says you can't jump?'

Wright replied saying: 'Yeah, you have to go straight through your penalty run-up, no jumping.'

Fernandes had put United 2-0 up within the first 20 minutes in their Champions League clash on Tuesday and Rashford added the third from the spot before half-time. Deniz Turuc pulled a goal back for the visitors but Daniel James rounded off a comfortable win in stoppage time.

The victory moved United three points clear at the top of Champions League Group H with two matches remaining.

Marcus Rashford misses out on BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist despite public support... but Manchester United and England star will be given a specially-created award for his efforts to end child food poverty

* Marcus Rashford has missed out on the Sports Personality of the Year shortlist
* The Manchester United striker will instead be given a specially-created award
* The 23-year-old will be honoured for his efforts to end child food poverty
* He was overlooked for the main award which is based on sporting achievement

Marcus Rashford has missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist and will be handed a specially-created award instead.

Sportsmail revealed four weeks ago that the England forward and anti-poverty campaigner was set to be overlooked for the main award because it must be based on 'sporting achievement'.

And while the SPOTY contenders are not officially announced until next week, Sportsmail understands that Rashford has not been included on the shortlist which was decided by a panel of judges last week.

Marcus Rashford will be given a specially-created award after missing out on the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year shortlist

The panel have instead decided to honour the Manchester United striker's efforts to end child food poverty with a new 'Panel Special Award'.

The BBC confirmed: 'The Premier League striker is set to be honoured at this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year with a Special Award on December 20, awarded on behalf of the shortlisting panel in recognition of his exceptional impact outside of his sport.

'The Sports Personality of the Year judging panel unanimously agreed that Marcus' accomplishments off the pitch this year should be commended.'

He will be honoured for his work to end child food poverty with a new 'Panel Special Award'. Sportsmail revealed in October that Rashford was set to miss out on the main BBC award

Barbara Slater, who chaired the 12-person SPOTY panel, added: 'Marcus's endeavour to give a voice to those who find themselves in a situation that he too is familiar with has been greatly admired and the panel wanted to ensure he was recognised for that.

'In a year that has been challenging for everyone, but particularly vulnerable families, he has gone above and beyond to transcend his sport and make a real difference. This award is a tribute to a remarkable young man.'

Rashford had been the odds-on bookies' favourite to win the main award until Sportsmail revealed he would not be included because of long-standing criteria stating the shortlist must be selected based on 'UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage'.

Our story caused a nationwide debate about SPOTY and even the show's host, Gary Lineker, told Sportsmail that the 23-year-old 'would be a very worth winner'.

The growing support for Rashford had become a 'political hot potato' for the BBC, according to insiders.

However, Beeb bosses have resisted bowing down to public pressure and altering their criteria for the main award – opting instead to honour him in another way, as Sportsmail also suggested they would last month.

As well as the Panel Special Award, the BBC will also air a special access-all-areas documentary about Rashford's campaign on December 21 – the night after the SPOTY show from the studios in Salford.

Lewis Hamilton is now the overwhelming bookies' favourite to claim the prestigious SPOTY prize for just the second time, having won his record-equalling seventh Formula One world title.

Other contenders include world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan.

As well as BBC boss Slater, the judging panel for this year's SPOTY included Sportsmail columnist and ex-Manchester City star Micah Richards, Paralympic athlete Stef Reid and ex-snooker player John Parrott.

The rest of the panel was made up of sports broadcasters Isa Guha and Eilidh Barbour; the CEO of Sport Wales, Sarah Powell; sports editors - Les Snowdon (The Times), Alison Kervin (Mail on Sunday) and Shaun Custis (The Sun); and BBC chiefs Philip Bernie, the head of TV sport, and Carl Doran, the show's executive editor.

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford wins GQ's Campaigner of the Year award for his charity work to end child food poverty in the UK but he insists 'we're just at the beginning'

* Marcus Rashford recognised for work in helping feed vulnerable children by GQ
* Man United star features on front cover of the winter issue, released next week
* He has spearheaded efforts to ensure vulnerable children are not left hungry

Marcus Rashford has been recognised for his work in helping to feed vulnerable children by men's monthly magazine GQ.

The Manchester United star won the outlet's Campaigner of the Year award and features on the front cover of the winter issue, released next week.

The England international forced the Government into a second U-turn in five months in November as Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed to fund an extra £400million of free school meals.

The England international won the magazine's Campaigner of the Year award on Thursday. Rashford has spearheaded efforts to ensure that vulnerable children are not left to go hungry

Rashford, who has been honoured with an MBE for his efforts, has spearheaded efforts to ensure that vulnerable children are not left to go hungry amid the coronavirus pandemic and works closely alongside charity FareShare to help those in need.

'We're just at the beginning of it, really. We need to see how much we can keep improving things for everybody,' he told GQ.

'Child poverty and hunger is a problem that shouldn't exist at all and I'm just trying to bring as many people on board as possible so we can get better and better at dealing with it.

Rashford also featured on Vogue's front cover for their September issue earlier this year

'Nobody should be ashamed. Everyone's situations are different, upbringings are different, communities are different.

'Of course it would be much better if poverty didn't exist, but it does, and nobody should be ashamed of their situation.

'Kids should have the best chance possible from the day they're born, that's why this is one of the big things I want to work on, you know?'

The 23rd edition of the GQ Men Of The Year Awards took place on Thursday, with the event held entirely online amid Covid-19.

Rashford featured on Vogue's front cover for their September issue alongside British model Adwoa Aboah earlier this year.

The 23-year-old shared the 'surreal' photo with his social media followers after pushing the Government to backtrack on their free school meals policy.

Kind-hearted Marcus Rashford puts his special edition Nike boots up for grabs in prize draw as the Manchester United striker looks to raise money 'for people in need at Christmas' after spearheading drive to end child food poverty in the UK

* Marcus Rashford is continuing his battle to tackle child hunger and poverty
* The striker became a hero for his successful free school meals campaigning
* He's now set to give away two pairs of his Nike Mercurial Superfly boots
* Only 10 were made, with each £3 entry going to Trussell Trust and Fare Share

Marcus Rashford is giving fans a chance to win a pair of his personalised football boots to raise money for the fight against child hunger and poverty.

The Manchester United star has put two pairs of his special edition boots up for grabs in a prize draw.

The striker wore the all black Nike Mercurial Superfly boots for the first time in October when he lined up for England against Belgium in October in the Nations League match.

Only ten pairs of the boots have been made by Nike and cannot be bought at a shop.

In a video to announce the draw, the 23-year-old said: 'I'm really excited that we're going to raise some more money for people in need during Christmas.

'The boots are very special and very personal to me, and the best thing about them is that they are unique—not many people will have a pair, so make sure you're in the race to win them!'

Fans will have to pay £3 to enter the prize draw which has been organised by the Trussell Trust and Fare Share charities who aim to tackle child poverty.

Rashford first wore the boots at Wembley for England's Nations League clash with Belgium. The star wants to raise money 'for people in need at Christmas' with the new competition

The Crowdfunder prize draw will take place on December 22nd.

Rashford became a hero to millions by his campaign to force to Government to make free school meals available to poverty-stricken families during school holidays at the height of the coronavirus crisis.

He was awarded a MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his campaigning.

The footballer has said the issue of child hunger was close to his heart as he experienced it growing up in Wythenshawe in Greater Manchester.

Emma Revie, CEO of The Trussell Trust, said, 'Marcus Rashford's campaigning this year has shone a light on the harsh realities faced by families struggling to afford the basics.

'It's also highlighted the incredible compassion and generosity that exists in our communities and shown that when we come together to push for a better future for each other, things can change.

Rashford has become a household name after his work during the height of the pandemic. The issue of child hunger is one close to the Man United star's heart after his upbringing

'We're so grateful to Marcus for donating these special edition boots.

'By entering the draw, you'll be helping us support food banks to provide vital emergency help, and work in the long-term towards a hunger free future where everyone has enough money for the essentials.'

Lindsay Boswell, CEO, FareShare, said: 'Following a very difficult summer for the vulnerable communities that

'FareShare are supplying over 2million meals per week to, we are now facing an even tougher winter with the economic impacts of Covid-19 biting, on top of the terrible health impacts. FareShare will continue to maintain a full operation throughout Christmas and the winter to serve the charitable communities and their clients who need our help. We are delighted to be launching the prize draw for the boots, generously donated by Marcus Rashford, as the funds raised will help make an incredible difference for many children and families this winter.'

And Rob Love , CEO of Crowdfunder, added: 'Food poverty is unacceptable in 2020 Britain. Despite unprecedented hardship, the goodwill and compassion of people up and down the country gives us hope and demonstrates the power of local communities coming together.

'Crowdfunder stands ready and willing to do what we can to support people during this time. We are proud to be working with the Trussell Trust and FareShare to deliver this Prize Draw and are doing so completely fee-free. We hope this can put more meals on tables, and a smile on the face of those that win! Thank you, Marcus'.

The Trussell Trust saw a 61% increase in food parcels needed across its UK network in October to December – six parcels given out every minute.

They also say approximately 1.9 million people used a food bank in the UK in 2019/2020 prior to the lockdown.

'I never look beyond Manchester United': Marcus Rashford insists he wants to stay at Old Trafford for the rest of his career as the boyhood Red Devils forward says it 'wouldn't sit right' with him to play for a rival

* Marcus Rashford has vowed to end his career at boyhood side Man United
* The forward said he has 'never looked beyond' the club after joining as a child
* Rashford claimed he could not contemplate playing for one of United's rivals
* He heaped praised on United for supporting his family while he was a youngster

Marcus Rashford plans on spending his entire career at Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has quickly become a United icon after graduating from the club’s academy and claimed he would never contemplate playing for a rival.

Rashford faces one of those, Manchester City, at Old Trafford on Saturday as United attempt to bounce back from the galling midweek exit from the Champions League.

‘I never look beyond Manchester United and as a kid I have never looked beyond Manchester United,’ Rashford said.

‘In my mind it wouldn’t sit right for me to be pulling on another shirt. I just want to do my best I can. Hopefully I am here for a long time.’

Rashford hailed United’s support for his empowering campaigning after being awarded the Sport for Social Change award at the British Sports Awards.

The striker, a boyhood United supporter, believes the care afforded to him by academy staff as a child is the key reason why he has flourished.

Marcus Rashford has revealed his desire to stay with Manchester United for his entire career. Rashford is a boyhood United supporter and claimed he could never play for another club. He hailed the club for supporting him and his mother Melanie when he was a child

‘All the good things that have happened this year have all come from Manchester United giving me the opportunity as a kid,’ Rashford added.

‘I don’t just remember the last year or the last five years. I’m talking about times when nobody drove in my family and I had to get to training, when United had people to come and take me to the training ground and back home when I was six to nine years old.’

Rashford also detailed the lengths that United went to in making sure they supported his family and mother, Melanie.

‘I am talking about times when they put me into accommodation when my mum was struggling at home when I was 11 years old. I was there until 16 or 17.

‘It is a lot deeper than people see sometimes. People only see what’s been happening since I have been in the first team but the bond I have with United is much greater than that.

‘It will forever be greater than my actual career because they are the reason I have become a footballer and they have given me the opportunity to express myself.’

Marcus Rashford's epitomises 'real danger' of Manchester United, as Michael Owen says Old Trafford attack is one of the best in the world... while Roberto Martinez labels England forward a 'special striker'

* Marcus Rashford scored twice as Manchester United beat Sheffield United 3-2
* The England forward scored either side of half-time to earn a crucial three points
* Michael Owen praised Rashford's overall display at Bramall Lane on Thursday
* Roberto Martinez also commended the forward for his maturity this season

Michael Owen and Roberto Martinez praised Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United forward fired his side to victory at Sheffield United with two goals on Thursday.

The Red Devils moved five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand after Rashford's brace, along with Anthony Martial's goal, gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's all three points at Bramall Lane.

The 23-year-old netted his fifth league goal of the season and his 12th overall, though former Manchester United striker Owen praised his overall game on Thursday.

Speaking about Rashford, Owen told Amazon Prime Sport: 'I thought his movement was excellent, his timing of the runs too.

'I never thought he was a central player. He never played that at youth level, he always wanted to be a number ten or a wide player. It suits him and it suits Martial, he's the best out of the two to play down the middle.

'His (Rashford)'s running off the ball was a real danger. They are one of the best counter-attacking teams in the country. It is the other side they need to work on now at Old Trafford.

'When you have five attacking players like that they are one of the best in the world. If they get it tight at the back then they can really fight for this title.'

Marcus Rashford (left)'s brace saw Manchester United beat Sheffield United 3-2 on Thursday. Michael Owen praised Rashford's overall display at Bramall Lane on Thursday night. Rashford netted an equaliser in the first-half after David McGoldrick gave the Blades the lead. Rashford added a second early in the second-half to set up a two-goal lead for the Red Devils

Solskjaer's side fell behind through David McGoldrick's close range goal after Dean Henderson's error in the opening minutes of the game, but Rashford and Martial struck before half-time to overturn the deficit.

Rashford then added a third goal for United in the second-half after Paul Pogba's pass, which was enough for all three points despite McGoldrick pulling another goal back.

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez believes Rashford is showing a greater level of maturity this season at both club and international level.

Martinez told Prime Sport: 'I think that the weight sometimes gets on your shoulder when you have to play the final touch. The movement was exceptional, in front of goal he looked confident.

'He took a few minutes to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, it is a much more mature Rashford for United and for England too. When you have the pace and composure on the ball you have a special striker.'

Speaking about his own display on Thursday night, Rashford said: 'Once again we've done well to respond, going a goal behind, scoring three goals, and then of course, late on, if we don't kill the game off it's going to be tough at a place like this.

'Today we didn't get anything that we didn't expect. They fought for every ball, they wanted to win the game and they fought for 90 minutes, and in the end we managed to get the three points.'

Regarding his second goal, he added: 'The referee played advantage and in the end that's probably why we get the goal, because it is a foul earlier on in the play.

'But from there it's about reaction and runs and passes, and when we play one-touch like that, we can do that against every team in the league.'

Marcus Rashford calls on Manchester United to 'get over the line' this season and end their three-year trophy drought after losing THREE semi-finals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020

* Manchester United last tasted silverware success under Jose Mourinho in 2017
* The club reached three semi-finals last season but suffered defeat in them all
* A strong start to the season means expectations at Old Trafford are high again
* Marcus Rashford believes United need to 'get over the line' and end the drought

Marcus Rashford has insisted Manchester United need to clinch silverware in 2021 following several near misses last season.

United have fallen short of lifting their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite reaching three semi-finals under him, but expectations are high once again after their fine start to domestic life this time around.

And star forward Rashford, who enjoyed a memorable 2020 both on and off the field, has underlined the desire at Old Trafford to bring back their glory days.

Marcus Rashford (left) has urged Manchester United to end their trophy drought this season

'The platform has been there for a while and in this last year we've taken greater steps forward which is obviously a positive for us,' he said in an interview on the club's official website.

'We missed out on winning some trophies, losing in the semi-finals, and that's what we need to correct in the coming year and make sure we get over the line and win trophies.

'That's the next thing for us to do as a team then it's about doing it consistently and being able to repeat it back-to-back which is more difficult than getting it the first time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer steered United to three semi-finals last year but his team lost all of them; Rashford, who had a fine 2020 on and off the field, wants this year to go even better. Rashford watched on dejected as United were sent out of the FA Cup by Chelsea at Wembley

'We've still got a long journey ahead of us, but at the moment we're in a good place and we're concentrating on ourselves and our team and just trying to improve ourselves in each game.'

The last time United tasted glory was in 2017, under Jose Mourinho, although the club have recently come close to breaking their three-year duck.

Defeats to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League, all at the semi-final stage, meant Solskjaer's side were unable to mark their late season surge with tangible success.

Rashford, who netted his 50th Premier League goal - and his 80th for his club - in United's dramatic win over Wolves, will prove crucial to achieving their lofty targets.

He added: 'My main aim is to help the team and, as a forward, it's goals and assists that do that so the more of them I can get is the best for the team.

'That's what I'm concentrating on doing and ultimately that's what is going to help the team pick up points and if we have three or four of us that are playing in that way and trying to help each other score, then we can have big possibilities this season.'

The 20-time top-flight champions will be able to move level on points with Liverpool with victory over Aston Villa on Friday night.

Default Re: Marcus Rashford

'Yes I'm a black man and I live every day proud that I am': Marcus Rashford speaks out after receiving vile racist abuse on social media as Man United star refuses to give 'strong reaction'

* The Manchester United forward was abused following his side's draw at Arsenal
* It comes a day after Reece James shared the abuse he received on Instagram

arcus Rashford has responded to the vile racial abuse he received on social media by insisting he will not give trolls the 'strong reaction' they are looking for.

The Manchester United striker was abused following his side's 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Saturday with users posting monkey emojis while one told him to 'go back to the zoo'.

The 23-year-old is the latest footballer to be targeted after his team-mates Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial suffered abuse earlier this week. Chelsea's Reece James and West Brom's Romaine Sawyers also received racist insults on social media.

Marcus Rashford has responded to the vile racial abuse he received on social media. The England international was targeted on Instagram after Man United's 0-0 draw with Arsenal

Rashford tweeted: 'Humanity and social media at its worst. Yes I’m a black man and I live every day proud that I am. No one, or no one comment, is going to make me feel any different. So sorry if you were looking for a strong reaction, you’re just simply not going to get it here.'

'I’m not sharing screenshots. It would be irresponsible to do so and as you can imagine there’s nothing original in them. I have beautiful children of all colours following me and they don’t need to read it. Beautiful colours that should only be celebrated.'

The forward went on to thank Arsenal for the special programme they made for the game which thanked the England international for his work in helping to tackle child food poverty.

The Gunners programme had a picture of Rashford on the front with the heading: 'Thank you Marcus. From everyone at Arsenal'.

Rashford has campaigned for free school meals and has brought about several Government U-turns which has seen poorer children provided with food during school holidays.

Rashford thanked Arsenal for a special programme they made to honour his charity work

In December, he was given a special award at the BBC's Sports Personality of the year ceremony for his work efforts with food charity FareShare.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright said there are ways for platforms to catch online abusers and insisted they must do more to protect players.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Wright said: 'It seems to be a fad now, a black player players poorly or think they played poorly and they come with all the emojis.

'There's ways of doing it. There's ways of being able to catch people but I don't think they're vigilant enough, nowhere near.'

Fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas added: 'It's accountability. In my opinion, the platforms that be, whether it's Instagram or Twitter, I need them to show me these people. That will tell me they are doing enough, doing everything they possibly can'.

Host Gary Lineker also said it should be a law for social media companies to tackle racial abusers and Wright was in agreement. He said: 'It should be a law as well. It something they should be doing hand-in-hand. How much do they care deep down?'

United condemned the racist abuse Tuanzebe and Martial received earlier in the week and called on social media platforms 'strengthen measures'.

One comment on Tuanzebe's Instagram account read 'DAMNNN N*****' as well as several monkey emojis on a photograph of his United shirt and number, posted two weeks ago.

A club statement read: 'Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night's game.

'We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.

'Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our All Red All Equal initiative.

'Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behaviour.'

United's Director of Communications, Charlie Brooks, said the club's players are 'sick' of the 'hate-filled' abuse online and urged social media platforms to create verifiable and identifiable accounts so the perpetrators can be caught.

It was revealed earlier this week that Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter will be handed fines for the abuse of footballers, if they fail to protect them under tough new rules drawn up by ministers.

This means they will have to deal with anonymous abusers so the police can take action, Sportsmail understands.

Chelsea also strongly condemned the abuse of James on Friday night and insisted that something has to change.

The clubs said: 'Everyone at Chelsea FC is disgusted with the racist abuse Reece James received on social media on Friday evening.

'This club finds racism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable. We totally condemn it. In sport, as in wider society, we must create a social media environment where hateful and discriminatory actions are as unacceptable online as they would be on the street.

'We add our voice to those urging social media platforms and regulatory authorities to take stronger, more effective and more urgent action against this despicable behaviour. Something needs to change and it needs to change now.'

James addressed the issue again in a separate Instagram post on Saturday.

He posted: 'We all have a part to play in making this world a better & more equal place! Racism is completely unacceptable! Human is our only race! @instagram you must do more!! #notoracism ".

Chelsea team-mates Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta were among those to tweet in support for James.

Speaking on Friday about the incidents earlier this week, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters had said: 'Tackling online hate is a priority for football, and I believe social media companies need to do more.'

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has said the government will deliver regulation, which will allow companies to be held to account for abuse on the online platforms - and that will include forcing companies to tackle anonymous abusers.

Jordan Henderson and Tyrone Mings have also held talks with Government ministers this week about tackling abuse in football.

West Midlands Police said a 49-year-old man from Kingswinford, near Birmingham, was questioned in custody on Friday evening following the abuse of West Brom midfielder Sawyers.

The force's football hate crime officer is also investigating reports of another racist comment towards the player.

Kick It Out chair Sanjay Bhandari said this week: 'We are disappointed that players are continuing to be subject to racist abuse on their social platforms, it is completely unacceptable.

'We will continue to work with the football authorities, law enforcement and social media companies to try and rid football of hateful and discriminatory behaviour.'
