Manchester United captain Harry Maguire insists they have 'improved on defending set plays' despite conceding stoppage-time equaliser from a corner in Southampton draw

* Harry Maguire believes Man United have made progress at defending set pieces
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side looked on course to secure win until late equaliser
* Southampton's Michael Obafemi tapped home from a corner in the 96th minute

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire believes the side have made progress at defending set pieces despite Southampton scoring from a corner to deny them all three points on Monday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side looked on course to continue their fine winning run with a victory over the Saints at Old Trafford but had to settle for a point when Michael Obafemi tapped home from a corner.

Southampton took the lead through Stuart Armstrong in the 12th minute before goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial put United ahead but Obafemi scored an equaliser in the 96th minute.

'We have improved on defending set plays,' Maguire told Sky Sports. 'We had a terrible record at the start of the season but have been really good on them.

Harry Maguire believes Manchester United have made progress at defending set pieces. Despite conceding a stoppage-time equaliser from a corner in Southampton draw on Monday

'They can't get in when we have four men around the goal so we'll have to look at it.

'We are disappointed at the moment but we dust ourselves down tomorrow.'

Maguire was widely mocked on social media after his bizarre role in Southampton's last-gasp equaliser.

The centre back, signed for £80million from Leicester last summer, appeared to have man-marked team-mate Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the injury-time corner - leaving Obafemi free to score.

Victory would have seen United move above Champions League chasing rivals Chelsea and Leicester into third but instead remain in fifth place with three games remaining.

'You look at Lindelof and Maguire, you've got to target them as much as you can': Ian Wright slams United's two starting centre backs and insists they are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's weak link

* Manchester United were soundly beaten by Crystal Palace on Saturday evening
* Ian Wright has slammed United's centre backs Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire
* He says teams should target them as they are the weak link in United's team
* Wright says there is no point buying Jadon Sancho if centre backs are so poor

England legend Ian Wright believes Manchester United's centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are 'not good enough' to play at the top level after their disastrous opening game against Crystal Palace.

United were soundly beaten at home by the Eagles in their first game of the Premier League season, with former player Wilfried Zaha scoring twice for his boyhood side.

While much of the attention at United this summer has been on Jadon Sancho and securing some attacking threat, Wright believes their main weakness is at the back.

[size=1"]Harry Maguire looked shaky in United's opening-day defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday[/SIZE]

Victor Lindelof was beaten with ease as Wilfried Zaha burst past him to score Palace's third

'I think you look at Maguire and Lindelof, for me you've got to target them now as much as you can,' Wright told Premier League Productions.

'People are talking about who Man United might buy, you talk about forwards - at the moment, they've got to start focusing on that centre-half pairing.

'If you get any of those two isolated in any situation, you're probably going to get something out of it.'

Palace won 3-1 at Old Trafford, with both Lindelof and Maguire run ragged by the likes of Zaha, Jeffrey Schlupp and new boy Eberechi Eze when he came on in the second half.

Maguire endured a difficult summer off the pitch, getting arrested while on holiday in Mykonos, and he struggled on the pitch last Saturday too.

'I thought some of Maguire's positioning [against Palace] was poor and Lindelof, just weak, weak in certain situations,' Wright continued.

Ian Wright says teams should target United's centre backs, who aren't good enough for the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has plenty of problems to solve if United are to improve this season. There has been much talk about Jadon Sancho but United must improve defence, says Wright

'They've got to sort out that centre-half pairing, for me. It's not good enough at this level for Man United if they're challenging for stuff. Lindelof and Maguire, not good enough.

'The fact is, that is not good enough. At this level, with what Man United are supposedly meant to be trying to do, people are talking about Jadon Sancho coming, what's the point?

'You're going to get Jadon Sancho but still have two centre-halves who got absolutely roasted [against Palace] without actually trying too hard.'

United face Luton Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, before returning to league action on Saturday with a trip to the south coast to face Brighton.

setuju sama Wright, percuma dapat Sancho kalo lini belakang masih amburadul, sama kayak Chelsea musim lalu. mending benahin lini belakang aja dulu, lebih urgent dibanding winger/penyerang

'It is not an issue that emerged the other day': Rio Ferdinand slams 'slow and cumbersome' Manchester United centre backs and warns they must seek defensive recruitments as Jadon Sancho won't 'solve their fundamental problems' at the back

* Manchester United lost to Crystal Palace in their first game of the new season
* Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were heavily criticised for the United defeat
* The fans are frustrated with the lack of new signings at the club this summer
* Rio Ferdinand has urged them to sign defenders as well as signing Jadon Sancho

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United's failure to address their defence this summer and insists signing Jadon Sancho would not mask the club's 'fundamental issues'.

United got off to a losing start in this season's Premier League campaign in a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof heavily criticised for their roles in the goals.

The defeat added to the misery at the club, with fans having become frustrated at the lack of additions this summer and the lack of progress of signing Borussia Dortmund star Sancho.

And despite lifting some of the gloom around the club with a midweek victory against Luton in the Carabao Cup, Ferdinand insisted the United centre-backs' mistakes last weekend demonstrated why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side require recruitment in that area.

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Man United centre-backs Harry Maguire (left) and Victor Lindelof. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United's season started with defeat against Crystal Palace

'They did anything but set their stall out. They were slow and cumbersome,' Ferdinand told BT Sport of Maguire and Lindelof's display against Palace.

'There were so many different mistakes. It was terrible to see and it disappoints. This is an area I have spoken about for many many months, and it has not been addressed.

'He [Solskjaer] could show them the Europa League semi-final and FA Cup semi-final as well [for poor performances]. I think you look at Liverpool, they bought Alisson to solve their goalkeeping issue and Van Dijk for their defence, Man United have not done that [addressed their issues at the back].

And Ferdinand (left) said the defeat showed United have not addressed their defensive issues. And Ferdinand insists their problems at the back will not be masked even if Jadon Sancho signs

'It is not an issue that emerged the other day. I want Jadon Sancho, he is a generational talent and would get fans off their seats, but does he solve the fundamental problems I see with this team?

'There are moments before games when the opposition, are they looking across and saying they are going to have to be at their best to score past this Man United defence? I don't think so.'

When asked what position United should prioritise signing, Ferdinand responded immediately: 'Centre-half', as did fellow BT Sport pundit Joe Cole.

'We've got enough good centre backs here': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to rule out Manchester United signing a new defender this summer despite another shaky display at the back in dramatic win over Brighton

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he doesn't need to sign defenders before the deadline
* The manager says their defensive errors are simply down to lack of sharpness
* He says they will improve as they play more games after a shortened pre-season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists his Manchester United defence is good enough to succeed without reinforcements and claims their issues are simply down to a lack of sharpness.

The Manchester United manager is under pressure to bolster his options after losing their first Premier League game of the season at home to Crystal Palace, before struggling to beat Brighton away – securing a 3-2 win with a penalty in the 10th minute of additional time.

As it stands, the Red Devils have only added Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek to their side, but questions have been asked about the defensive partnership of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he doesn't need to sign defenders before the October 5 deadline. Although questions have been asked about Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. However, Solskjaer believes defensive errors are down to lack of sharpness

However, Solskjaer ruled out the possibility of adding a centre-back to his ranks during the transfer window while speaking after United's win at Brighton.

He said: 'We've got many defenders here and I put Eric (Bailly) on to bolster the defence, following the runs of Trossard and Maupay.

'For me, we've got enough good centre-backs here at the moment.

'When you concede chances and concede goals, there are two different things you can look at - it's either the team shape, or are there any individual mistakes.

'We're not in our best shape of form, our shape isn't there, we're not sharp enough to stop crosses or follow the runs.

'We're a little bit behind, that's more structural mistakes than individual mistakes. I thought Victor did well today.'

The Red Devils manager has added Eric Bailly to the squad to bolster their defensive options. Bailly was introduced to counter the runs of Trossard and Maupay during the Brighton game

With fans growing more anxious as the transfer deadline of October 5 approaches, Solskjaer defended his players by saying the squad will improve as they play more matches after a shortened pre-season.

'We've got to be honest enough to say they created the most chances. Maybe 50-50 possession but they had loads of shots, big chances and that's not what we want. We need to improve a lot in the weeks coming forward,' the boss said.

'The spirit and character of the boys I don't question at all, the spirit is there. The sharpness and fitness might not be, but it is going to come.

'We've got three or four weeks to catch up and the more games we play, the more 90 minutes we get, we'll be sharper and sharper.'

L'Equipe hail Victor Lindelof and new-boy Alex Telles as the Manchester United stars who made PSG look 'unrecognisable' in their infamously tough player ratings - while Neymar and Kylian Mbappe get FOUR out of 10

* Manchester United secured a late win over PSG in their Champions League tie
* L'Equipe praised the displays of United defenders Alex Telles and Victor Lindelof
* But the French outlet were not impressed with superstars Neymar and Mbappe

French outlet L'Equipe was full of praise for Manchester United stars Victor Lindelof and Alex Telles after they helped down PSG 2-1 in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night.

Marcus Rashford's late winner made it a perfect start to the Red Devils' European campaign, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men put in a solid defensive display to keep the French giants' top stars quiet.

L'Equipe, who are known for giving harsh player ratings, gave Swedish centre-back Lindelof a seven out of 10, the highest score out of all 11 players on the pitch, while new arrival Telles was awarded the same.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof impressed in their 2-1 win over PSG on Tuesday

New signing Alex Telles also put in a solid shift at left-back as he helped keep PSG's stars quiet

But they were damning about some of the performances of the hosts, who were made to look 'unrecognisable' by United.

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were expected to run riot against the struggling Premier League side, but both were shackled throughout and both duly scored a four.

On their front page, they said PSG were 'punished' by Marcus Rashford less than two months after competing in the Champions League final, with only goalkeeper Keylor Navas winning a rating higher than six.

On the right side of the attack, the usually impressive Angel Di Maria joined Neymar and Mbappe in scoring a four, while former Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye could only muster a three.

On-loan Roma right-back Alessandro Florenzi was also given a three, with Ander Herrrera scoring four against his former club. At the back, Presnel Kimpembe fared slightly better as he was given a five, with Navas the top performer with a seven.

L'Equipe call PSG 'unrecognisable' in their surprise defeat by Manchester United

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel admits he was left baffled by his side's sub-par display.

'It was a performance without intensity, without aggression, without counter-pressing,' he said. 'It was a bit bizarre, I don't know why.'

For United, L'Equipe also gave a glowing review of David De Gea, who scored seven after making a succession of smart stops to show why Solskjaer is keeping him as his No 1 at Old Trafford.

Fred was United's lowest-scoring player as he was scored a four and Axel Tuanzebe was slightly higher on five despite winning praise from many pundits in his first game for the club in 10 months.

Scorers Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, who missed penalty in the first half before netting from the spot, have to be satisfied with a six, as well as Frenchman Anthony Martial - who scored an own goal after the interval.

The win continues United's mini revival after bouncing back from a 6-1 humbling at home to Tottenham by beating Newcastle 4-1 on Saturday.

£80m captain Maguire isn't leading, Shaw keeps going AWOL, Lindelof's a liability but Telles and Wan-Bissaka are rare positives... United's defenders rated after 'Hackney Marshes' display in Turkey

* Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir
* Their defence was a shambles for both goals in the Champions League loss
* Captain Harry Maguire was culpable for Demba Ba's breakaway goal
* Luke Shaw was caught badly out of position for the Turkish club's second
* Maguire and Shaw among several United defenders who must improve form
* Aaron Wan-Bissaka one of the few defenders emerging with credit at moment

Paul Scholes compared it to 'Under 10s football'. Rio Ferdinand claimed you 'wouldn't see this on Hackney Marshes.' Robin van Persie couldn't remember any team conceding such a bad goal.

This wasn't the Dog and Duck third XI, though, it was Manchester United being humiliated by Istanbul Basaksehir on the Champions League stage.

United fans like to sing about being the 'Pride of all Europe' but on Wednesday night their defence was the continent's laughing stock.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire cuts a dejected figure in Istanbul on Wednesday

The manner of Istanbul's first goal was shameful, with 35-year-old Demba Ba left to stand alone on the halfway line by a comical lack of defensive organisation.

Ba isn't as quick as he used to be but when the defence is non-existent he was always going to score.

United's back line didn't exactly cover themselves in glory for Basaksehir's second goal, either, and the defeat not only piles more pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but raised yet more serious questions about their defence.

It's clear some of United's defenders need to urgently up their game and others need to depart the club. Only a handful are justifying their place at present.

We rate all of United's defensive options on their form.

URGENT IMPROVEMENT NEEDED

United's captain Harry Maguire insisted repeatedly before the trip to Turkey that he is completely focused on his football despite the off-field distractions of his summer incident in Greece.

If that truly is the case, then Maguire simply isn't as good as an £80million defender should be.

His start to the season has been abysmal and Wednesday night was just the latest example. Nothing is going right for him and he just looks completely devoid of confidence and form.

Maguire contradicted Roy Keane's comments after the weekend loss to Arsenal by saying there are a 'lot of leaders' in the United dressing room.

Maguire neglected his captain's duties by allowing Ba to be left unmarked on Wednesday. United's captain wrestled team-mate Luke Shaw out of the way against Tottenham

But where was his own leadership when going forward for a corner without ensuring Ba was being marked in case of the quick counter-attack? It was nothing short of a dereliction of a captain's duty.

And his positioning was all wrong for Istanbul's second goal, rushing to the ball and leaving acres of space behind him for Edin Visca to score.

It follows several rushes of blood to the head, notably in the 6-1 defeat by Tottenham, in which Maguire seemed to forget the basics of defending.

The hope was - and presumably remains - that Maguire can play himself out of this early-season funk.

Maguire will serve a one-match ban in the UEFA Nations League following his red card playing for England against Denmark. The best thing would be for Gareth Southgate not to pick him, to have a rest and get his head together. Rating: 4/10

Eric Bailly has been very unfortunate with injuries that saw him sidelined for most of last season and most of the start of this.

It's prevented him challenging Victor Lindelof for a spot at centre-back though from the evidence of the one league game he has started lately - the 6-1 loss to Tottenham - he wouldn't be much of an upgrade.

The jury remains out on Bailly as he needs a sustained run in the side to prove himself. But while injuries continue to afflict him, United need to carry on in his absence. 5/10

Eric Bailly has been hampered by injuries as he tries to assert his claim to start for United

Axel Tuanzebe, 22, is seen as the long-term partner for Maguire by many but he was as bad against Istanbul as he was excellent in the win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Mind you, it wasn't his fault that Maguire, the captain and senior defender, failed to Marshall the defence properly. Tuanzebe should have been told to stay back and keep tabs on Ba.

It also wasn't his fault that Solskjaer wanted to bring on Scott McTominay at half-time and he was the one replaced.

There's every chance Tuanzebe will establish himself as a first-choice centre half at United. After all, he kept Kylian Mbappe and Neymar very quiet the other week and so can be trusted in big games.

Solskjaer only seems to think he can do a job in the Champions League and he was an unused sub against Chelsea and Arsenal.

There is much to be improved on in his game but Tuanzebe looks far more promising than most of the alternatives. 6/10

Axel Tuanzebe was excellent in United's win over PSG, keeping Kylian Mbappe in check

Luke Shaw was completely AWOL for Istanbul's second goal having been caught upfield and it's not the first time that has happened.

It's certainly been a mixed start to the season for the Englishman who goes from being excellent against Leipzig and on the verge of a return to the England squad to dreadful against Spurs and Istanbul.

Shaw isn't having an awful season by any means but he will need to up his game otherwise risk losing his place to Alex Telles. 5/10

Luke Shaw was too slow in getting back and couldn't prevent Edin Visca scoring the second

We haven't seen much of Timothy Fosu-Mensah. He started against Crystal Palace on the opening weekend and then came off the bench on Wednesday night.

His performance against Palace suggested that Aaron Wan-Bissaka won't be losing his place anytime soon. 5/10

Timothy Fosu-Mensah came off the bench in Istanbul but doesn't get much game time

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Lindelof was an unused substitute in Istanbul and so doesn't take any of the blame. He also didn't play in the humiliating loss to Tottenham.

But none of this means the Swede is good enough to be one of United's first choice centre halves.

There have been doubts about Lindelof for a long time and Ferdinand has been among the pundits saying he isn't good enough if United are to challenge for silverware anytime soon.

Yet of all United's defenders, Lindelof has emerged with some credit in recent weeks, especially in the goalless draw with Chelsea and the 5-0 win over RB Leipzig.

There were times last season when Lindelof and Maguire did look like an effective pairing at the back but that seems a long time ago.

It's increasingly clear that United will need to sign a new centre-back and indeed it's baffling they didn't address this urgent need in the summer.

When they do, Lindelof is going to be the one making way and not Maguire. 5/10

Maguire and Victor Lindelof remain a thoroughly unconvincing central defensive pairing

It's baffling that Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo remain at the club.

Jones is only 28 but you feel he's much older. He only played 562 minutes of football last season and hasn't been included in United's squads this season.

Like Rojo, who went out on loan to Estudiantes last season, they are clearly surplus to requirements and will surely leave in January.

JUSTIFYING THEIR PLACE

United fans will be keen to see more of Telles, the summer arrival from Porto, after his highly encouraging debut against PSG.

The left-back is currently isolating after contracting coronavirus but could feature in Saturday's game at Everton.

Telles isn't going to be the magic solution to all United's woes but he will provide stiff competition for Shaw and hopefully offer something a bit different. 7/10

Alex Telles played really well against PSG on his United debut but then contracted Covid-19

Wan-Bissaka really struggled on Wednesday night but on the whole the right-back is up to the task.

He regularly tops the charts for making tackles and winning the ball back and is building on a positive first season at Old Trafford despite the team's current travails.

So good is his tackling some pundits are telling Solskjaer to move him across to centre-half to solve problems there.

It's clear Wan-Bissaka has what it takes to play there for United for many years to come and he also showed us a glimpse of his attacking qualities by scoring against Newcastle. 7.5/10

Aaron Wan-Bissaka had an off night in Istanbul but has generally performed well of late

Brandon Williams has been restricted to a couple of EFL Cup outings so far this season and it isn't clear where he stands with Telles coming in.

Perhaps it would make sense to convert to right-back, which he is capable of doing. It's a shame because the youngster had an excellent first season in 2019-20 and would have wanted to kick on. 7/10

Bruno Fernandes slams Manchester United's sloppy defence after squandering the lead twice in 3-3 draw with Everton as frustrated Portuguese star says 'we are conceding goals every game'

* Bruno Fernandes was left frustrated after Man United's 3-3 draw with Everton
* United went 2-0 at half-time before being pegged back to 2-2 by two quick goals
* Scott McTominay put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men back in front in 70th minute
* However, in the dying moments, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored an equaliser
* Fernandes has criticised United's defence for their part in the six-goal draw

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has hit out at his own defence after they squandered the lead twice in their 3-3 draw with Everton at Old Trafford.

Just days after thumping nine-man Southampton 9-0, the Red Devils were on course for another Old Trafford victory having recovered from a poor start to the second half.

United went into half-time with a two-goal cushion thanks to Edinson Cavani's header and a sublime effort from Fernandes, only for Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez to draw Everton level within seven minutes of the restart.

Scott McTominay put the hosts back ahead, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to react quickest when Lucas Digne's stoppage-time free-kick was flicked on to seal the Toffees a point in the six-goal thriller.

The deflating result means United have failed to properly close the gap to leaders Manchester City, leaving Fernandes to hit out at his own team-mates for the result.

'I think we gave away the result, we gave away the game twice,' he said. 'Because after being 2-0 up at half-time, coming into second half in the way we did, it's really bad.

'We are conceding goals every game, we are conceding goals a lot of times and at home we concede too many goals.

'Too many bad results at home and this can't be possible. I think we have to win this game after being 2-0 up, you have to win this game.

'It doesn't matter how. You concede two goals and you come again and you score again.

'It's impossible to concede another goal again, from a free-kick in the half of the pitch, we concede a goal from there and the way we concede.'

When asked if the team may have already felt the game was won before Everton's late goal, Fernandes added: 'Maybe this was the problem, I don't know. I don't feel that, I don't know what my team-mates feel but we can't feel that until the game is over.

'And as you see we concede the goal in the last seconds of the game.'

Fernandes said United are 'conceding goals every game' following the six-goal thriller

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also left frustrated by the way United blew all three points on Saturday.

'Well, of course when you're in the 94th minute and you're winning the game I think it feels worse, when you concede in the last minute,' Solskjaer said.

'The first five minutes of the second half, of course, they were hard to take but the rest of the second half we played some good football and we should have been out of sight, really.

'Football is about getting the ball into one net and keeping it out of the other and we didn't manage to do that. We didn't manage to keep it out.

'That's what cost us because we played some very, very good stuff.

'You know, you can sit and you can talk about the good performance or the domination of possession and chances we had, but still we come away with only one point.'

The United boss also claimed United are not aiming to win the title this season as they failed to properly close the gap to leaders City - who can go five points clear and with a game in hand still if they beat Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

'We're not talking about winning titles, we've come a long way this team, and we shouldn't have been considered as title contenders,' Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

'We've got to be better as a team and see where we end up.'

biasanya United yg cetak gol menit2 akhir, eh sekarang malah sering kebobolan menit2 akhir. sang kapten klaim offside, handsball lah, eh dia sendiri malah yg bikin on side

Default Re: United defender under Solskjaer

'Lindelof's problem is Maguire. Maguire's problem is Lindelof': Gary Neville claims Man United's centre-backs do NOT work together... before insisting Red Devils need a defender who will 'get the side up the pitch and be more aggressive'

* Man United were held to a 1-1 draw at West Brom on Sunday in Premier League
* Victor Lindelof was criticised for his role in Mbaye Diagne's opener on Sunday
* Gary Neville claims Lindelof's partnership with Harry Maguire doesn't work
* Neville says Lindelof would work very well alongside someone like Virgil van Dijk

Gary Neville has praised Manchester United's Victor Lindelof as a 'good defender' who would flourish alongside a player like Virgil van Dijk but has admitted that his centre-back partnership with Harry Maguire will never work.

United were held to a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened West Brom on Sunday, with the defence coming in for criticism after they lost more ground in the Premier League title race.

Victor Lindelof was singled out for criticism for his role in the Baggies' second-minute opener, after Mbaye Diagne out-muscled him to head home at the Hawthorns.

Victor Lindelof was criticised in particular for his display against West Brom on Sunday

And as Neville - alongside Jamie Carragher - dissected the disappointing draw during Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, the former right-back highlighted the troubles United face at centre-back.

After Carragher claimed it is too easy for opponents to 'bully' the Swede, Neville replied: 'I want to make a point on Lindelof. Lindelof's problem is Maguire, Maguire's problem is Lindelof.

'I think he (Lindelof) is a really good player by the way, he understands the game, he reads the game, I think he is a good defender. I think if he was alongside a (Rio) Ferdinand or Van Dijk, I think he would make a great pair.

'The problem is he is alongside somebody who isn't the most mobile in Harry Maguire, and I think that is the problem that Lindelof has got. That actually they have invested £80m in Maguire, so they are going to have to put somebody beside him.

Gary Neville questioned the credentials of Lindelof and Maguire as a centre back partnership. Neville claimed United should look to sign someone with a similar profile to Eric Bailly

'I don't think he does a good job alongside Maguire because they both just drop back a little bit and United need someone to get up the pitch. They have got to get up the pitch, they have got to be more aggressive.

'They have got to have the nerve to make the stomach churn a little bit, that there is a bit too much space in behind them than there ordinarily would be and that is what the best teams have.'

Neville went on to add that United should in fact look to sign someone with a similar profile to Eric Bailly, an unused substitute at the Hawthorns, to play alongside Maguire.

Neville argued: 'The thing is they are not going to turf Maguire out. He is the rock, they paid £80million for him, he has played every minute. He is the one they are going to build the defence around.

'So what you have to do is find the partner for him. That has got to be somebody with the physicality and profile of Bailly, someone who is quick, good in the air, strong and can cover Maguire one on one but is also going to get them up the pitch and allow them to play a little bit higher.'

kapan nih Bailly sembuh dari cedera? Maguire juga 11-12 sama Lindelof, 'cuma' kadang2 suka bikin gol/peluang dari sundulannya, kayak kmrn pas WBA sundulannya masih bisa ketepis Johnstone, disitu doank 'kelebihannya' dibanding Lindelof

Manchester United 'are missing a real dominant centre back' and need to find a partner for Harry Maguire 'with authority' to take Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to the 'next level', insists Paul Scholes

* Paul Scholes said the club lacked the belief to fight for the Premier League title
* The legendary ex-Manchester United midfielder believes defence is a weak spot
* Scholes added that Harry Maguire needs an authoritative centre half next to him

anchester United legend Paul Scholes has declared the club needs to sign an authoritative centre half to partner Harry Maguire if they want to push on to the next level.

After stating that the club lacked the belief to fight for the Premier League title, the former United midfielder had his say on where the Red Devils need to improve in order to challenge for major trophies.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side beat Newcastle 3-1 on Sunday but looked shaky at the back and conceded lots of chances against a misfiring Magpies side.

Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who played alongside him on Sunday, have come in for criticism in recent weeks and Scholes believes United must strengthen at the back in the summer.

Paul Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to sign a centre half to challenge for titles. Manchester United beat Newcastle 3-1 on Sunday but were sloppy and open at the back

He said after the match: 'They are missing a real dominant centre back, you look back at the history of the teams that win leagues they have real leaders in the back four.

'Maguire could be but he needs someone next to him that can dominate. I don’t think we are far off, the attacking play, the midfield play, Paul Pogba is looking better, Fred and (Scott) McTominay.

'We have a young (Mason) Greenwood coming of age, the more games he plays the more star quality he will bring, this lad could be a real superstar.

'There’s goals in the team and I just think a real dominant centre half with authority could take United to that next level.'

United had been linked with RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano but the defender has agreed a five-year deal with Bayern Munich. Upamecano's team-mate Ibrahima Konaté is on their radar while Solskjaer has reportedly made signing a centre-back one of his priorities this summer.

Paul Scholes and Gary Neville have urged Man United to sign a new partner for Harry Maguire or forget about trophies... so - including a World Cup winner, an £80m star with an eye for a goal and a colossus in France - who are their options?

* The spotlight on Manchester United's centre-backs has increased recently
* They beat Newcastle 3-1 last night but looked shaky at the back
* Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been criticised after recent displays
* Paul Scholes believes they need a better partner alongside Maguire
* Lindelof also came in for stick after the draw with West Brom earlier this month
* Gary Neville claimed Lindelof's partnership with Maguire doesn't work

Manchester United's win over Newcastle last night kept them in second spot in the Premier League but once again the result couldn't mask their defensive frailties.

Following the 3-1 victory at Old Trafford Paul Scholes became the latest United legend - Gary Neville had a pop last week - to pinpoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's rearguard as their weak spot.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were the men in the middle but United looked shaky against the misfiring Magpies and Scholes said: 'They are missing a real dominant centre-back. You look back at the history of the teams that win leagues they have real leaders in the back four.

Lindelof was outmuscled by Mbaye Diagne for West Brom's goal in the previous Premier League game and Neville said at the time: 'Lindelof's problem is Maguire, Maguire's problem is Lindelof.

'I think he (Lindelof) is a really good player by the way, he understands the game, he reads the game, I think he is a good defender. I think if he was alongside a (Rio) Ferdinand or Van Dijk, I think he would make a great pair.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has watched his side concede 32 goals in 25 games - 17 more than table-toppers Manchester City so here, Sportsmail looks at some of the potential options for him this summer.

Neville claimed United should look to sign someone with a similar profile to Eric Bailly. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly on the lookout for a new United centre back this summer. Manchester United must find a way to keep the injury-prone Bailly fit for the rest of the season

JULES KOUNDE (Sevilla)

Kounde has become one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe and enhanced his reputation further with a stunning solo strike against Barcelona in Sevilla's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg 2-0 win.

United's interest in the 22-year-old is genuine but Kounde now has a £80million price tag on his head - which could ward off suitors, especially as United are against lavish outlays during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The France Under-21 international fits Solskjaer's profile as he looks to sign young talent.

Kounde has made 31 appearances for the club this season - scoring three times. He also has versatility as he is able to play at right-back, giving Solskjaer a potential option there too.

Jules Kounde is valued at £80m and enhanced his reputation with a stunning goal vs Barcelona

RAPHAEL VARANE (Real Madrid)

The most high-profile name on this list, Varane has won it all at Real Madrid and is also a World Cup winner with France.

Before joining Real in 2011 he came close to signing for United from French outfit Lens and 10 years on could finally move to Old Trafford.

Varane's future at Spanish giants Real is reportedly up in the air with the France international yet to sign a contract extension on his current deal that expires in 2022.

The 27-year-old would appear to be a fit alongside Maguire and give Solskjaer a truly world-class centre-back at his disposal.

Varane is quick across ground, good in possession and is a fine disposer of the ball - all of the hallmarks needed for United to play on the front and build attacks from the back.

Raphael Varane (left) is the most high-profile name of these options - shining at Real Madrid

IBRAHIMA KONATE (RB Leipzig)

RB Leipzig have just lost one star centre-back and are now in danger of losing another.

United have had a chance to see Konate at close quarters twice this season in the Champions League. He didn't cover himself in glory in the first game as the Bundesliga outfit were thumped 5-0 at Old Trafford. However, he did fare better in a 3-2 home win in December - despite scoring an own goal.

A great reader of the game, he thrives at intercepting the ball and starting attacks for his team too. He also possesses an aerial presence at 6ft 4in.

The announced departure of Dayot Upamecano to Bayern Munich next season could prove a stumbling block to Solskjaer though with Leipzig likely to be unwilling to lose him and then Konate in the same summer.

The France Under-21 international has endured an injury-blighted 18 months - and has not featured since December - but when fully fit he has the qualities that would entice Solskjaer.

Ibrahima Konte (left) has faced Manchester United twice this season in the Champions League

DAVID CARMO (Braga)

The 21-year-old was reportedly close to joining Liverpool but is now on the radar of their fiercest rivals.

Like many on this list, the defender's age fits with what Solskjaer is trying to build at Old Trafford.

What makes him stand out too is that he is left-footed, providing a natural balance in the heart of United's defence alongside the right-footed Maguire.

Braga are under no pressure to sell, with the the centre-back contracted until 2025, so a substantial fee would have to be offered to entice them - with him reportedly valued at £36m.

However, Carmo is sadly facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg during Braga's Portuguese Cup semi-final first leg against Porto on February 10.

Naturally left-footed, David Carmo (left) would provide a balance at centre back for United

SVEN BOTMAN (Lille)

Just like Carmo, Botman is a naturally left-footed centre-back who again would provide balance to the Red Devils defence.

Yet to be capped by Holland, it seems like it's only a matter of time until he earns senior international honours after excelling at Lille this season.

Lille sit top of Ligue 1 by one point above Paris Saint-Germain - and boast the joint-best defence in the division with the French giants.

Lille have only conceded 15 goals in 25 league matches this season and Botman has played an integral role in that keeping 13 clean sheets. According to WhoScored.com no other centre-back in Europe's top five leagues has kept more clean sheets.

United have had problems dealing with aerial threats this season but that isn't an issue for Botman - who stands at 6ft 4in and is excellent in the air. He is also assured on the ball and a fine tackler.

Lille centre back Sven Botman has shone this season as they sit top of Ligue 1 ahead of PSG. Botman is great in the air, at 6ft 4in, and would be able to handle the rigours of English football

Speaking earlier this season about Botman, Lille manager Christophe Galthier said: 'In football, you have leaders who are vocal, ones who gesticulate and ones who shake the team up. I have a few of those.

'But you also have people who lead by example, through their performances, and it's true that Sven is emerging as this type of leader.'

Galthier then went on to compare his talents to Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma - a two-time Premier League winner and France international.

'I had Kurt Zouma who was playing there for Saint-Etienne before he turned 17,' he continued. 'I hope Sven can go on to have a career like Kurt.'

Brought in to replace Gabriel when the Brazilian was sold to Arsenal, Botman was scouted by Lille's transfer guru Luis Campos during an impressive loan spell at SC Heerenveen in the Eredivisie.

PAU TORRES (Villarreal)

Already a Spain international, Torres' stock continues to rise at Villarreal.

The 24-year-old has £57m release clause with the Spanish outfit and is currently contracted at the Estadio de la Ceramica until 2024.

He isn't short of suitors with Real Madrid also linked with a potential summer swoop for him.

Like Carmo and Botman he is naturally left-footed and he would be a perfect foil alongside Maguire due to his ball-playing ability and athleticism. The latter two attributes give teams more flexibility when defending with a high line too.

At 6ft 3in he has the physical attributes needed for English football as well and allies that with a high football IQ - often being in the right place positionally.

Pau Torres is an athletic, ball-playing centre back and his style would suit the Red Devils

PS - Which current players could fill the void?

Aside from Lindelof, Solskjaer currently has three other options at centre back he could pair Maguire with at United in Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones.

Out of that trio Bailly is the best partner alongside Maguire. Although rash at times, the 26-year-old is quick, strong and is prepared to put his body on the line.

The main sticking point with the Ivory Coast international though is making sure his body holds up as he is too injury prone. He has only featured 12 times for the Red Devils this season - with his last Premier League appearance being in a 2-1 win over Fulham on January 20. Since then Solskjaer's side have won just two of their six top-flight games so it's no coincidence that his recent injury lay-off is another contributing factor to that.

Between now and the end of the season, Solskjaer and his medical team must find a way to keep him fit if they are to close the gap on table-toppers Manchester City, secure a top-four spot and possibly win the FA Cup and Europa League. His appearance in their Europa League last-32 first leg 4-0 win over Real Sociedad on Thursday is a positive start.

kalo mau cari yg pengalaman yah Varane, kalo mau yg masih muda ada Kounde, kmrn sukses 'mematikan' Messi & malah cetak gol, kalo mau cari yg postur tinggi & jago duel udara ada Botman
