Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Ian Wright calls for Bruno Fernandes' jumping penalty technique to be BANNED after he used it twice during win over West Brom as Arsenal legend insists the spot-kick style favoured by Jorginho isn't 'fair' on goalkeepers

* Manchester United beat West Brom 1-0 thanks to Bruno Fernandes' penalty goal
* He jumped in his run-up causing Sam Johnstone to stray from his line too early
* Johnstone's initial save was disregarded and Fernandes took another penalty
* Fernandes scored on his second attempt but Ian Wright says his run-up is 'unfair'
* He claims a jump in the air makes it harder for goalkeepers to time their dive

Ian Wright has called for Bruno Fernandes' jumping penalty-taking technique to be banned.

Wright says it is 'unfair' on goalkeepers as a stuttering run-up, combined with a jump in the air makes it harder for them to time their dive.

Wright's voiced his opinion shortly after Fernandes used the tactic twice to score the only goal in the Red Devil's game against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Ian Wright has called on Premier League chiefs to prevent players jumping in penalty run-ups. Wright has stated that the tactic deployed by Bruno Fernandes is 'unfair on goalkeepers'

Manchester United were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute of their Premier League clash with West Brom.

Baggies' first-choice goalkeeper Sam Johnstone palmed Fernandes' first shot away, but was penalised for straying off his line during the midfielders run-up.

Subsequently Fernandes was awarded another attempt and found the net to see United secure their first home win of the 2020-2021 season.

Wright has, however, called for Premier League officials to intervene as he claims such run-ups are 'unfair' on goalkeepers.

'It is [difficult for goalkeepers],' Wright said on BBC's Match of the Day.

Fernandes' technique allows him to have an idea of which direction the goalkeeper will go. He says the style - also favoured by Jorginho - prevents goalkeepers from timing their dive

'And then you've got forwards jumping up, doing this, doing that sort of stuff and the goalie can't move his foot off.

'They should stop people jumping and that, they should have to make a full... just run at the ball and hit it. If they can move and the goalies can't, that's not fair.'

When asked by fellow pundit Gary Lineker: 'Are you going to have a law that says you can't jump?'

Wright replied saying: 'Yeah, you have to go straight through your penalty run-up, no jumping.'

Fernandes is not the only Premier League player to use the tactic to deceive the opposing goalkeeper.

Chelsea's Jorginho is an advocate of the tactic - even though both players have missed from the spot this season while using the 'jumping style.'

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes lauded for his 'Paul Scholes-esque' SCREAMER in Manchester United's win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League... with Old Trafford legend admitting he 'used to love that spot' on the edge of the box

* Bruno Fernandes scored a stunning goal in Man United's Champions League win
* His first goal against Istanbul Basaksehir was a wonderstrike from distance
* The goal was described by BT Sport pundits as 'Paul Scholes-esque' at half-time
* Scholes admitted that he loves the position where Fernandes scored from

Bruno Fernandes's wonderful opening goal for Manchester United against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night was described as 'Paul Scholes-esque' by BT Sport pundits.

The Portuguese midfielder let fly from the edge of the penalty area after seven minutes at Old Trafford after a corner had been cleared out to him, with Fernandes' effort rifling straight into the top corner of the net.

Fernandes netted another goal later on in the first-half as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side ran out 4-1 winners overall, with the 26-year-old delighted with his individual effort.

Bruno Fernandes scored a stunning goal in Man United's 4-1 win over Istanbul. The midfielder unleashed a screamer from the edge of the penalty area after seven minutes

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, the United midfielder claimed: 'It was a really good goal, you need to be ready when you're on the edge of the box to maybe stop the counter-attack.

'This time I felt I needed to shoot, maybe next time I need to take a foul and get a yellow card.'

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes was in the BT Sport studio covering the game, with fellow pundits Gary Lineker, Owen Hargreaves and Rio Ferdinand agreeing that it was a 'Scholesy-esque strike'.

Scholes admitted that he often took up that position on the edge of the penalty area at corners, while he also had time to praise Fernandes' overall display.

Ex-United star Paul Scholes admitted he used to love the area where Fernandes scored from

The 46-year-old said: 'I used to love that spot, waiting for the ball to come and hoping there's no defenders and hoping nobody's on the edge of the box. What a first time strike and it was a sensational goal.

'He was the one that won it for them early on. He's their most creative player and he will create all the chances, even the scrappy goals from midfield, they all count.'

Fernandes nearly had the opportunity to score a first-half hat-trick in the Istanbul game when Manchester United were awarded a penalty when Marcus Rashford was felled.

Fernandes scored a second goal later in the first-half after a goalkeeping mistake. Fernandes has himself admitted that his style of play is similar to Scholes

The Portuguese midfielder, however, turned down the chance to take the spot-kick and instead handed the ball to Rashford who dispatched his effort with ease.

In the second period, Istanbul pulled a goal back through Deniz Turuc's free-kick but Daniel James sealed the points with a swift counter-attack in the dying moments.

Earlier this month, Fernandes admitted that his style is very similar to Scholes' after a goal-laden start to his Old Trafford career.

The 26-year-old has 21 goals in 35 United games in all competitions but claims he is more like Scholes than other ex-Red Devils midfielders in front of goal.

Fernandes told the United Podcast last week: 'For me, maybe I'm closer to Paul Scholes. (He) was a guy who likes to be in the box, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.

'I think Scholes was one of the best midfielders in the world. For England, a lot of people talk about Frank Lampard because he scored a lot of goals of course, one of the best in England too, you have Steven Gerrard too.

'But I think Scholes is the one who makes more difference than anyone else. In the last generation, those three were the three best ones, and for me Scholes was best.'

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes is perfect for Manchester United because he 'doesn't care about mistakes and only thinks about success', insists Nani as he backs former team-mate's fearless style of play to bring success back to Old Trafford at last

* Ex-Red Devils winger Nani predicted fans would 'go crazy' for Bruno Fernandes
* Portuguese attacking midfielder has scored 21 and assisted 13 in just 35 games
* Nani believes Fernandes' ambition and risk-taking on the ball suits the club well
* Manchester United were known for swashbuckling style under Sir Alex Ferguson

Former Manchester United winger Nani has hailed his former Sporting Lisbon team-mate Bruno Fernandes after his superb start at Old Trafford, and backed him to continue improving.

United signed Fernandes close to the transfer deadline in January and the 26-year-old has contributed 21 goals and 13 assists in his first 35 games - almost one goal involvement every match.

Few could have predicted such a seamless transition to the Premier League for the talismanic midfielder, but 112-cap Portugal international Nani backed him to make fans go crazy from the off.

Ex-Manchester United winger Nani waxed lyrical about midfielder Bruno Fernandes (above)

And the Orlando City winger, 34, believes Fernandes can continue improving and making Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side better.

He told United Review: 'A big part of this team is Bruno Fernandes. Bruno now is a much better player than when we were playing together.

'He was doing great in Portugal but the Portuguese league is not the same as the Premier League.

'I saw so much potential in Bruno and I told him to go to England if he decided to move to another league.

'I said to him: "Your game will fit there and the fans will go crazy for you!"

Nani (left) played alongside Fernandes at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon from 2018-2019. The 112-cap Portugal international Nani claimed fans would 'go crazy' for Bruno Fernandes. Nani, now at Orlando City, backed Fernandes to keep improving and make the side better

'The style of his football is something fans appreciate. He is a player who likes to take risks in the game, who wants to take the responsibility of the game on his back and make difficult passes, dribbles and shots.

'He doesn't care about mistakes; he only thinks about success and making the team have success. He knows what that takes. That's Man United, isn't it?

'Bruno has done so well until now, scoring goals and setting up a lot of goals, but he will keep improving and making the team even better.'

Fernandes was once again instrumental in Manchester United's 4-1 thrashing of Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday which sent them top of Champions League Group H.

He scored twice and could have had a first-half hat-trick when Marcus Rashford was fouled by Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo for a United penalty.

Fernandes admitted he had told Rashford he could take the next spot kick, and handed the ball to the England forward, who scored.

The result means the Red Devils only need one point from their remaining two games to progress to the knockout stages in Europe.

Nani was once a maverick forward for United under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Premier League four times and the Champions League in his eight years at the club.

Fergie's swashbuckling style is now a distant memory, however, with the club having struggled since the great Scot's retirement in 2013.

Manchester United 'preparing to reward Bruno Fernandes by doubling his wages to £200,000-per-week... with midfield star earning same as Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson'

* Man United are preparing to offer Bruno Fernandes a new £200k-per-week deal
* The new contract would double his current earnings of £100,000-per-week
* He will also have the option to extend his deal for a further year at Old Trafford
* Fernandes currently earns the same as Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson

Manchester United are preparing to offer Bruno Fernandes a new £200,000-per-week contract, doubling the midfielder's current wages.

According to the Mirror, United are going to reward the Portuguese star for his efforts on the pitch just under a year after he joined the club in a £47million transfer from Sporting Lisbon in January.

Fernandes made an instant impact at Old Trafford and has recorded 22 goals and 14 assists from 37 matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 26-year-old is just eleven months into a four-and-a-half year deal with the Red Devils and this new agreement will allow him to extend his deal for a further 12 months.

United view Fernandes as a key element for their squad moving forward and want to keep him happy despite inconsistency on the pitch in both the Premier League and Champions League.

He currently earns £100,000-per-week - a sum that is much lower than some of the club's other players and not reflective of his importance to the side.

Goalkeeper David De Gea earns over three times more than Fernandes on a £350,000-per-week deal and Paul Pogba earns £300,000-per-week.

The Portuguese earns the same as Jesse Lingard and second-choice stopper Dean Henderson. He has recorded 22 goals and 14 assists from 37 matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whereas the Portuguese earns the same money as Jesse Lingard and second-choice stopper Dean Henderson.

After the lockdown disrupted last season's Premier League campaign, Fernandes returned to finish the season in style and was awarded the fan's player of the year award despite only playing half a season.

He has also won two Premier League Player of the Month awards for February and June 2020, further rubber stamping his positive impact at the club.

However, he has his eyes set on team silverware - with United having gone seven years without winning a Premier League title.

Fernandes has been leading by example this season with seven goals and three assists from nine matches in the Premier League and is an influential figure in the dressing room.

He has also continued his fine form onto the European stage, with three goals and an assist in the Champions League group stage.

'Not good enough': Bruno Fernandes breaks his silence after Manchester United's embarrassing Champions League exit in blunt social media message, insisting he and his team-mates must do 'much better'

* Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night
* Pressure has ramped up hugely on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since RB Leipzig loss
* Bruno Fernandes has penned a blunt message on Instagram about United's exit
* The Portugal international insists that United need to improve drastically

Bruno Fernandes has posted a blunt message on social media following Manchester United's humiliating Champions League exit, insisting their performances are simply 'not good enough'.

Despite starting their group in commanding fashion - winning their first two matches against PSG and Leipzig - United have now dropped into the Europa League after losing three of their last four games.

United once again got off to an awful start as they went 3-0 behind against RB Leipzig in Germany on Tuesday night before a rally at the death which proved too little too late in their crunch final group game.

Bruno Fernandes has broken his silence following Manchester United's Champions League exit

Fernandes insists that United must improve drastically after losing 3-2 against RB Leipzig

Pressure has ramped up massively on United and in particular on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Fernandes has had his say on their Champions League exit - claiming the Red Devils must improve drastically.

'Not good enough from us,' Fernandes wrote on his Instagram account on Thursday morning accompanied by a photo of himself showing his dejection against Leipzig.

'We have to do much better to represent such a big club and especially playing in the Champions League with big teams.'

Fernandes' message comes amid reports United's senior players ascertain that Solskjaer's continuous tweaking of their tactics is a detrimental factor to their indifferent form.

According to the Telegraph, they fear that their manager's constant tinkering has caused instability which has correlated into inconsistent results.

The Red Devils have played 18 times in all competitions this season and not once has Solskjaer named the same starting XI in back-to-back games. Furthermore, he has only named an unchanged line-up in the Premier League once.

Meanwhile, Many United players have kept silent since Tuesday's defeat, but captain Harry Maguire spoke out immediately following their exit.

Pressure has intensified massively on United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the defeat. United will be desperate to bounce back when they host rivals Manchester City on Saturday

The England international said United will continue to fall short in their quest for success unless they learn from the mistakes in the Champions League.

'We've got to go home, look at ourselves because it's not good enough for this club to go out in a group in the Champions League,' Maguire said. 'We're disappointed.

'Of course it's frustrating (conceding early goals). As a defender you want to be keeping clean sheets and we seem to be shooting ourselves in the foot in the first five minutes of the game.

'It's a poor goal to give away. We've come here, we've known a (draw) is good enough to get through to the knockout stage and we concede after two minutes. It's not acceptable.

'We've got to look at ourselves. I said it on Saturday (after coming back to win 3-1 at West Ham) and I keep saying it to the lads that we can't keep giving these goals away and coming from behind.

'Although we do have great belief that we can get back into the game, one time we won't manage to do so and unfortunately it's been (on Tuesday night) because we can't start a game like we have done.'

There will be huge scrutiny on United to bounce back immediately when they return to Premier League action on Saturday evening.

However, the task doesn't get any easier for Solskjaer's side as they prepare to welcome rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford.

City head into the weekend's eagerly-anticipated derby on the back of their comfortable 3-0 win over Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United are 'building something important' after grabbing crucial win over Aston Villa to put Red Devils hot on the heels of Premier League leaders Liverpool on goal difference

* Manchester United moved level on points with leaders Liverpool on January 1
* United beat Aston Villa 2-1, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a controversial penalty
* The Portuguese midfielder believes the Red Devils are building a strong bond
* United are in excellent form recording an eighth win in 10 matches

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United are 'building something important' after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men kicked off 2021 by moving level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The Red Devils joined the reigning champions on 33 points after 16 matches by securing a hard-fought 2-1 win from an entertaining New Year's Day clash with high-flying Aston Villa.

Bertrand Traore cancelled out Anthony Martial's opener at an empty Old Trafford, only for Fernandes to quickly fire home from the penalty spot to keep second-placed United hot on Liverpool's heels.

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes (right) says the side are building something important

It was an eighth win in 10 Premier League games but Friday's matchwinner knows there is plenty of work to do.

'We are building something important,' Fernandes said. 'We know that. The most important for us is building a team, building a group of players who take care of each other.

'Today it was Eric (Bailly making a stoppage-time block) before it was David (De Gea) saving that ball, in other situations other players, but the main thing is the group has to be together.

'As I sit in the stands in the last two or three minutes, everyone is shouting and hoping not to concede a goal and to take care of the ball. Everyone wants that win and this is what it's about. We have to build this more and more.

'It was tough but we have to learn from here. Also from the Leicester game (on Boxing Day which ended 2-2) we have to do much better. We have some situations to close the game. You have to close.'

United had 19 shots on an evening that Villa managed 15, with Fernandes' penalty the difference after Douglas Luiz was adjudged to have brought down Paul Pogba, despite the France midfielder appearing to trip himself up.

Pogba, whose future and happiness is so often under scrutiny, also played a role in the build-up to Martial's goal and produced some lovely moments.

Fernandes added: 'Today Paul was top. The first goal he makes a good skill, he comes off from a player so easily. But we all know the qualities he has, it is not in doubt.

'I hope people are not in doubt on the qualities of Paul because we know he can play, he can help us and he can play really well, and today he did it. He was (involved) in both goals.

'In the penalty you see one of the best he can do, cover the ball and going away from his player, and he will give more and more and more with the confidence coming game after game.'

Watford arrive at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third round next Saturday, but first comes a crunch Carabao Cup semi-final against rivals Manchester City on Wednesday.

'Perfect start (to 2021), three points so we have to keep doing well,' Fernandes told club media. 'We have another competition to play and we want to be in the final, so now time to recover, take the energy back to us and try to win that game.'

United are set to be boosted in the coming weeks by the arrival of 18-year-old Amad Diallo from Atalanta in a deal potentially reaching £36.3million and Solskjaer suggested he is not thinking about other January deals.

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

'The top players turn up for the big occasions': Roy Keane insists Man United's Bruno Fernandes shouldn't be compared to Eric Cantona... after claiming the midfielder failed to show up in Carabao Cup defeat by Man City

* Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage
* John Stones and Fernandinho scored as Man City beat rivals United 2-0 away
* Roy Keane was critical of Bruno Fernandes' display at Old Trafford against City
* Keane claimed Fernandes shouldn't be earning comparisons to Eric Cantona

Roy Keane has criticised Bruno Fernandes for failing to turn up during Manchester United's Carabao Cup defeat by rivals City, insisting he definitely shouldn't be held in the same regard as Eric Cantona.

United crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage, losing 2-0 to Pep Guardiola's side at Old Trafford following goals in the second half from John Stones and Fernandinho.

Fernandes - who has been so influential for United since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 - produced a subdued display in midfield as United had no answers to City's superiority.

Fernandes' scintillating form for United of late has earned him comparisons with United great Cantona.

But former United captain Keane insists the Portuguese midfielder must turn up on the big stage regularly to be compared to the French icon.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said: 'It's not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had great praise for the last few months and people have been comparing him to [Eric] Cantona etc. Fernandes didn't really do much tonight.

'The top players turn up in the big occasions. And that's what the Cantona's used to do – they get their hands on trophies. That's where this team are a little bit short.

'They probably need one or two more players to come into this squad, no doubt, and they need the mentality and confidence of winning a semi-final to get them over the line.

'You then get momentum and they just didn't quite have it tonight.

Bruno Fernandes was ineffective in midfield for Manchester United as they lost 2-0 to City. Roy Keane said that Fernandes' comparisons with United great Eric Cantona should stop. Keane was critical of Fernandes' performance against City, insisting he failed to turn up

'But credit to City – they were up against an outstanding Man City team tonight who turned up and put on a good show.'

Fernandes, who has a brilliant 27 goals and 17 assists to his name in just 46 United matches, gave possession away too cheaply at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

And as Fernandes toiled, City showed their class once again to book their place in the Carabao Cup final.

Stones gave City the lead in the 50th minute at Old Trafford before Fernandinho made sure of the victory thanks to his excellent volley from outside the penalty area late on.

Guardiola's side will now look to win a fourth consecutive Carabao Cup with victory over Tottenham in the final at Wembley on April 25.

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for the fourth time. It's the fourth time the Portuguese star has won the accolade since joining United last January. Fernandes is all smiles as he shows off what has become a familiar award in recent months

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

Rio Ferdinand defends Bruno Fernandes following Roy Keane's scathing assessment of the midfielder after he failed to score in United's goalless draw with Liverpool: 'The geezer's output has been phenomenal'

* He agreed Fernandes' final pass was off but said you can't talk about him like that

Rio Ferdinand has defended Bruno Fernandes after Roy Keane criticised the midfielder for an uncharacteristically poor performance during Manchester United's goalless draw with Liverpool.

Keane was unimpressed with United's failure to capitalise on Liverpool's injury crisis despite the fact they retained their place at the top of the Premier League table.

But Ferdinand disagreed with Keane's scathing assessment of Fernandes and the club, insisting the Portuguese playmaker had been 'phenomenal' for the team.

Keane recognised the importance of Fernandes’s opportunity in the second, but felt he failed to live up to expectations.

He told Sky Sports: 'When I look at the couple of chances United have created, Rashford never turned up.

'Fernandes didn't play that well either, but they still created the two best chances of the game. Huge moments.'

Ferdinand was quick to jump to Fernandes' defence, saying 'can't talk about' him in such a way.

He told Stretford Paddock's YouTube channel: 'They looked off but we’re top of the league so I always look at it like that.

‘Yeah, there might be players off form, but if you’re still nicking results and you’re still winning and you’re still in a healthy position, that’s not a bad thing.

Roy Keane criticised United's Bruno Fernandes following their draw with Liverpool. Rio Ferdinand disagreed with Keane's scathing assessment of the United playmaker. Fernandes was subbed off for Mason Greenwood during Sunday's clash with Liverpool

‘If we played this game and had zero shots on target and we looked like we had no threat at all, then I’d be a little bit concerned.

‘But I still think there were moments, it was just the final pass or timing of the pass in the final third maybe a couple of times, and then the finish, they were just a little bit off today.

‘But, listen, you can’t talk about [Bruno]. I wouldn’t say Bruno’s looked off recently. The geezer’s output has been phenomenal.’

Fernandes saw his passing accuracy drop down to 58 per cent during the clash with Liverpool.

However, the midfielder has been vital to United this season – picking up his fourth Premier League Player of the Month award in 2020.

Fernandes has played a monumental role in getting United to the top of the table and Ferdinand believes United should be happy with their current position.

Speaking of the result against Liverpool, he added: ‘If I look at it as a player, when I played, I’d have taken a 0-0 before the game. I think the players, Ole, before the game would have sat there and said, “If we get a 0-0 we’ll take that, we’re still top of the league and we’ll just build on it.”

‘So I think they’ll be quietly satisfied with what they did. They didn’t pull up any trees, didn’t play particularly well, but we didn’t play bad and we didn’t look like a team inferior to the other, which was a good sign for confidence going forward.'

katanya ini performa terburuk Bruno selama di United, dan pas diganti katanya agak mencak2. lagian Bruno diganti dah menit2 terakhir juga. sepertinya laga vs Fulham, Bruno harus diistirahatkan biar fit pas laga FA vs Liverpool (lagi)
