Lanarkshire hosts match to commemorate Sir Matt Busby

North and South Lanarkshire Councils today (Friday 7th August 2009) launched the Sir Matt Busby Shield at Fir Park Stadium, Motherwell.
Motherwell 1 - 0 Manchester Utd XI: Coke is it as Motherwell beat United
Published Date: 07 September 2009

GILES Coke grabbed the only goal of the game as Motherwell earned a 1-0 win over Manchester United to claim the inaugural Sir Matt Busby Shield.

A crowd of 3,470 braved the elements at a rain-soaked Fir Park to watch the Clydesdale Bank Premier League side host a Red Devils reserve team coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The match took place to commemorate the 100th anniversary of legendary manager Busby's birth in Lanarkshire, and it was the home side who made the most of the encounter.

The game allowed Well boss Jim Gannon to run the rule over several fringe players, with a total of 17 players taking part for the Steelmen.

It took until the ninth minute for either team to register an attacking presence. Jim O'Brien picked up pass from Coke and played a one-two with John Sutton before lashing a 20-yard effort high over the bar.

The visitors saw a lot of the ball early on, but Motherwell were creating the best chances. Sutton flashed a header wide from a Ross Forbes ball and an O'Brien effort stung the palms of Ben Amos.

United's first venture into the Motherwell box came midway through the first half when Forbes was robbed on the edge of the area by Febian Brandy.

Goalkeeper John Ruddy was quick off his line, though, forcing the striker into a difficult angle, and the cut back for Magnus Eikrem was skied over the bar into the Cooper Stand.

The best chance of the half was almost the last kick, Stevie Hammell found space on the left flank and his low ball was just a yard too far ahead of Sutton and the striker could only look on as his sliding effort screwed wide of the post for a goal kick.

United's keeper was beaten eight minutes into the second half. Coke picked up the ball on the right flank, bounced a one-two off Sutton before dinking the ball over the outrushing Amos and in off the post.

The goal sparked the Red Devils into life, but they struggled to break down Motherwell.

Near full-time a move down the right saw the ball finish at Lukas Jutkiewicz, but the Pole scooped his effort over the bar.

Motherwell: Ruddy, Moutaouakil, Hammell, Reynolds, Coke (Lasley 58), Jutkiewicz, Sutton (McGarry 58), O'Brien (Pollock 75), Hateley (Jennings 58), Forbes (Fitzpatrick 58), Hutchinson (Page 78). Subs not used: Kosiorowski, Quinn.

Manchester United: Amos, F. Da Silva, Dudgeon (Wootton 45), Norwood, Chester, Gill, Brandy (Turnicliffe 53), Hewson, King, Eikrem, Ajose (Morrison 67). Sub not used: Devlin.

Referee: S O'Reilly

Attendance: 3,470

LIVERPOOL 1
Ngog 5

MANCHESTER UNITED 0
17/09/2009 19:33 - ManUtd.com, Steve Bartram
Reserves: L'pool 1 United 0

The Reserves suffered a first league defeat since early March against Liverpool, thanks to David Ngog's early strike and a string of missed chances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

French striker Ngog struck after defensive hesitancy as Liverpool bossed the opening exchanges, but how United's second-half dominance - against a side reduced to 10 men - failed to produce at least an equaliser is a mystery.

United made a nightmare start to the evening when a long punt forward from goalkeeper David Martin was mis-controlled by Ngog. The Frenchman advanced on goal, shadowed by United's Ritchie de Laet and Joe Dudgeon, but Ngog reached it first to poke a finish past the off-balance Ron-Robert Zieler.

Confidence temporarily dinted, United were on the back foot for the opening exchanges, and required a goal-line clearance by David Gray to keep out Nathan Eccleston's close-range effort.

The Reds did gradually gain a foothold in proceedings, with Kiko Macheda denied after a left-footed snapshot, but it was Eccleston who had the next clear chance as, having worked space well, he powered in a shot which Zieler comfortably beat to safety.

United's chances were aided by the decision to send off Liverpool's Damian Plessis, just after the half-hour. The French midfielder lunged into a challenge with Magnus Eikrem - whose foot was also high - but his offence was deemed worthy of a red card.

The numberical handicap unsurprisingly prompted a mass retreat from the hosts, and United took the initiative by totally dominating matters from then on.

Early in the second half, Josh King twice latched onto Zoran Tosic through-balls, only to see his first effort well saved by Martin, while he was then denied by a last-ditch challenge from Chris Mavinga.

Danny Welbeck missed a clear opening when he failed to connect with Magnus Eikrem's in-swinging free-kick. Liverpool, for their part, should have doubled their advantage when Ngog headed a Jay Spearing set-piece over the bar from close range with 20 minutes remaining.

Macheda was fractionally off-target shortly afterwards, toe-poking just wide after some fancy footwork amid a cluster of five home defenders, and the Italian was denied an assist when James Chester nodded his cross off-target from just inside the six-yard box.

The hosts were given a huge let-off with 10 minutes to go, when they were awarded a free-kick for King's legitimate challenge on goalkeeper Martin, ruling out Macheda's impish back-heeled finish.

Despite incessant late pressure, in which even Zieler ventured into the opposing penalty area, the hosts were able to run down the clock and inflict the Reds' first competitive defeat since a 1-0 reverse at Sunderland over six months ago.

United: Zieler; Gray, Chester, de Laet, Dudgeon (Gill, 66); Welbeck, C Evans, Eikrem, Tosic (Brady, 77); Macheda, King.
Subs not used: Amos, Norwood, Tunnicliffe.

SUNDERLAND 0
01/10/2009 19:55 - ManUtd.com, Steve Bartram
Reserves: United 4 Sunderland 0

Superb braces from Magnus Eikrem and Joshua King gave an on-song Reserves side a swaggering victory over reigning champions Sunderland.

The two young Norwegians terrorised the Black Cats as United ran riot, and the manner in which the Reds bounced back from last month's disappointing defeat to Liverpool will provide particular pleasure for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce.

Missed chances proved the Reds' undoing at Prenton Park a fortnight ago, but it took Eikrem just nine minutes to break the deadlock.

The tricky teenager, who has been a revelation in central midfield this term, is fast establishing himself as a set-piece specialist, and he curled a superb 25-yard effort over the Sunderland wall and just inside the right-hand post to further enhance his reputation.

King also began the game well, and almost laid on a quickfire second goal for Zoran Tosic with a surging run and cross, only for the Serbian's effort to be deflected over. From the subsequent corner, only a superb reaction save from Ben Wilson prevented Oliver Gill from powerfully heading home a first Reserves goal.

After whistling another effort just over the bar from 20 yards, King finally bagged his first Reserves goal of the season with a beautifully crafted strike. King cut in from the left flank, bypassed two defenders, swapped neat passes with Tosic and slid an unerring finish inside Wilson's far post.

United's pressure was incessant, and fully merited a spectacular third goal just after the half-hour. Eikrem deceived goalkeeper Wilson with his free-kick, and hoodwinked the young stopper again by shaping to pass before clipping home a delightful 40-yard effort.

Sunderland were briefly sparked into life, as Adam Reed wastefully shot past Ben Amos' near post, but United's defence - superbly marshalled by Gill and Ritchie De Laet - remained on their toes despite long periods of inactivity.

Reece Brown and Cameron Stewart were introduced for the second 45 minutes, replacing Fabio and Macheda respectively, and the latter was quickly involved, drawing a fine close-range save from Wilson within three minutes.

However, the save of the match came from the largely unemployed Amos, who produced a stunning reaction stop to turn away a powerful header from Oumare Tounkara from just six yards out.

The visitors' frustration grew as the half wore on, with rash challenges creeping into the game, but King had the final say when he latched onto a fine through-ball from Oliver Norwood, sped through on goal and side-footed in another clinical finish.

United: Amos; Fabio (Brown, 46), De Laet, Gill, Dudgeon; Tosic, C Evans, Eikrem (Brady, 66), Norwood; King, Macheda (Stewart, 46).
Subs not used: Devlin, Cofie.
