United XI prepare for Town

Warren Joyce

Warren Joyce has taken a United XI squad to face Longford Town in a friendly on Monday night.

The hosts include ex-Red Keith Gillespie in their team and it will be the first run-out for a number of players hoping to impress at Reserves level next season.

The squad, which has yet to be officially confirmed, travelled over to Ireland this morning and there could be places for some of the Academy youngsters not involved at the Milk Cup.

Luke Hendrie, Gyliano van Velzen, Tom Lawrence and Charni Ekangamene are also expected to feature after moving up from the youth team but Luke McCullough is on international duty with Northern Ireland's youngsters and scored in a 5-3 defeat to Chile in the Milk Cup on Sunday.

ManUtd.com will have a report online after the final whistle with the team staying in Ireland to play Cork City on Wednesday evening.

Longford 0 United XI 1

Mats Daehli

A Manchester United XI beat Longford Town 1-0 at Flancare Park in the first game of their mini-tour of Ireland.

In front of a crowd of 2,100, the Airtricity First Division side gave Warren Joyce’s side a good work-out on a rainy night in the Irish midlands, with United’s defence forced on to the back foot in the second half after a sustained period of Longford pressure.

United took the lead on eight minutes when Mats Daehli ran onto a quick free-kick down the left before cutting across the retreating home captain Chris Deans, then shooting off-balance over Craig Hyland.

Longford almost equalised three minutes later, from a free-kick after their full-back Michael Lee had been tripped by Michele Fornasier down the left touchline. The United defence failed to clear Daniel Purdy’s low set-piece across the box, but Jonny Sutherland was able to divert Gary Shaw’s shot onto a post.

Midway through the first half, United were denied a second by a sprawling save from Hyland. Adnan Januzaj’s free-kick from 25 yards was mis-hit but went through the wall, and the goalkeeper was able to hack clear. Hyland then produced a far better save in the 27th minute from a Gladstony curling effort from the edge of the box, as United began to dominate after the Irish side’s bright start.

Joyce was forced into a 36th minute substitution when Charni Ekangamene suffered a knock, with Reece James coming on in his place. United may have let their concentration after the two-minute break for treatment for Ekangamene, as, moments after the restart, Sean McGinty lost Shaw on the edge of the box. However, the Longford striker’s snapshot floated just over the bar.

Longford right-back Noel Haverty was having great difficulty containing the threat of Daehli down the left, and the Norwegian almost set up a second for United three minutes before the break. However, Hyland again was able to keep out Gladstony's low shot.

Agnaldo, on as a half-time substitute for Tom Lawrence, made an immediate impact when he set up Joshua King down the right channel in the first minute of the second half, but the impressive Hyland again denied United with a save at the near post. Town were regularly creating chances of their own, and, in the 53rd minute, substitute Tony Griffiths slipped past Fornasier with a fine piece of control, but his instinctive second-touch volley whistled over the bar. Griffiths then went close on the hour with a sharp header from Purdy’s corner, which United wide man Daehli was able to hack away at the back post.

An unmarked Agnaldo really should have made it 2-0 to United in the 82nd minute when he was picked out on the penalty spot by King’s deft chip from the right touchline. Hyland saved the first effort with legs, then the Brazilian sliced his second effort wide under minimal pressure.

United face Cork City FORAS on Wednesday at Turner’s Cross (Kick off 19:45) in the second match of their Irish tour.

United: Sutherland; McGinty, Fornasier, M.Keane, Giverin; Lawrence (Agnaldo 45), Ekangamene (James 36), Gladstony (Barmby 45), Januzaj (van Velzen 71), Daehli (Hendrie 61); King. Subs not used: Gorre, Love.

Reds XI to face Rovers

A Manchester United XI will head to Gloucestershire to take on Conference outfit Forest Green Rovers on Sunday 5 August, the club can confirm.

The match at The New Lawn will kick off at 3pm and was organised by former Reds skipper Gary Neville and Rovers chairman Dale Vince as part of the launch of the Sustainability in Sport foundation.

It is likely to form an important part of the pre-season for some of Warren Joyce's Reserves squad with more fixtures due to be announced soon on ManUtd.com. The Lancashire Senior Cup final against Accrington Stanley has already been pencilled in for 8 August.

The friendly takes place on the same day as the first team are in Oslo to face Valerenga as part of Sir Alex Ferguson's preparations for the 2012/2013 campaign.

CORK CITY 2
(Murray 28, O'Connell 90)

MANCHESTER UTD XI 0
25/07/2012 21:54 - Manutd.com, Nick Royle
Cork 2 United XI 0

A Manchester United XI were beaten 2-0 by Cork City on Wednesday night in the second game of their mini-tour of Ireland.

An experienced Cork side, 17 games into their league campaign, prevailed against United’s youngsters thanks to set-piece headers from Kevin Murray and Andy O’Connell. Warren Joyce made one change from the starting XI that beat Longford Town 1-0 on Monday, with Reece James replacing the injured Charni Ekangamene.

Watched by a 6,000-strong crowd that included the former Reds defender Paul McGrath, United made a bright start with Adnan Januzaj and Joshua King going close in the opening five minutes.

Jonny Sutherland was almost embarrassed by a speculative Kalen Spillane shot from 30 yards in the 10th minute, but the United goalkeeper recovered quickly to gather the ball at the second attempt. Vinny Sullivan should have opened the scoring for the Leesiders in the 21st minute when he reacted first to a Ian Turner free-kick from the left, but the Cork striker’s instinctive volley went wide of Sutherland’s goal.

Sutherland was then forced into a sharp save at his near post in the 27th minute after Cork wide man Daryl Horgan had cut inside Michele Fornasier on the left of the area. But from the subsequent corner, Cork defender Murray climbed highest at the far post to emphatically head Turner’s deep set-piece past Sutherland for the opening goal.

Inspired by their lead, the Airtricity League side started to shoot on sight. Former Celtic and Republic of Ireland midfielder Colin Healy saw a 31st minute effort from the right-hand edge of the United area whistle just wide, then Danny Murphy forced Sutherland into an ungainly save nine minutes later with a drive from the opposite flank.

The stand-out players in Monday’s win at Longford, Januzaj and Mats Daehli, seemed unable to impose themselves on the game, and United were reduced to speculative efforts from outside the area in the face of resolute Cork defending. King was able to make room for himself on the right-hand edge of the box in the final minute of the half, but the Norwegian was off balance as he shot well wide of Mark McNulty’s goal.

Cork manager Tommy Dunne made 10 outfield changes at half-time, but the new-look home side soon made the running in the second half as well. Cathal Lordan and Stephen Kenny had early opportunities, then Cork thought they had been awarded a penalty when referee Graham Kelly blew up after Keigan Parker went down under a challenge from Sean McGinty in the area. However, the official instead showed the former Blackpool striker a yellow card for simulation.

United carved out a clear opening in the 70th minute when sharp one-touch football by Januzaj and substitute Agnaldo on the edge of the Cork box gave Jack Barmby a sight of goal, but the teenager blazed narrowly over the bar. Sutherland then produced a magnificent one-handed save to keep out a Parker effort across goal in the final minute, but O’Connell made it 2-0 from the corner with a back-post header.

United: Sutherland; Fornasier, M.Keane, McGinty, James; Lawrence (Agnaldo 53), Giverin (Barmby 63), Gladstony (Hendrie 53), Daehli (Van Velzen 78); Januzaj; King. Subs not used: Gorre, Love.

Warren Joyce’s side resumed their pre-season build-up, following last month’s two-match excursion to the Republic of Ireland, with this useful run-out against Market Drayton Town at Greenfields.

There had been heavy rain in the area during late afternoon, but that gave way to more favourable weather just before kick-off and the conditions were near perfect as the game began. United started brightly and should have gone ahead as early as the second minute when Joshua King was clear through on goal, but keeper Matty Cohan dived bravely to take the ball from the striker’s feet.

The Reds eventually moved into the lead, in the 14th minute, when Ryan Tunnicliffe forced the ball home despite Cohan’s close attention. The game then entered a spell where United looked capable of scoring each time they attacked, but wayward shooting and good goalkeeping kept the tally under control.

Bebe, who had spurned three or four decent-looking chances earlier in the half, finally found the net with a firm header, from King’s right wing cross, in the 38th minute. Skipper Davide Petrucci made it 3-0, just before the half-time whistle, with a low drive which deflected off a Market Drayton defender before finding the net.

Reds goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was called into action several times. The home side tested him with many long-range efforts and was equal to their best attempts, most notably a spectacular diving save from Kyle Blake’s terrific free-kick just before the interval. Three minutes into the second half and Jesse Lingard drew warm and genuine applause from the home supporters with beautifully-struck shot which flew into the roof of the net.

Craig Ryan gave the Market Drayton supporters a moment to cherish, in the 56th minute, when he fired home confidently from the penalty spot to give the Shropshire club a well-deserved mention on the scoresheet . Further goals from Lingard (60 minutes), following a Petrucci pass, and Federico Macheda 10 minutes later, with a shot on the turn, for United, and Tom Rogers (76) for Market Drayton, completed the scoring in what was a fine evening’s entertainment from this hastily-arranged friendly match.

United: Johnstone, Vermijl (Agnaldo 82), Veseli (Gladstony 82), Wootton, Brady; Bebe, Petrucci, Tunnicliffe, Lingard; King (Blackett 67), Macheda. Subs: Gollini, Barmby, van Velzen.

UNITED XI 1

03/08/2012 21:23 - ManUtd.com, Adam Marshall
Scunthorpe 1 United XI 1

A United XI and Scunthorpe shared the spoils in a keenly-contested friendly at Glanford Park in front of the watching Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nick Powell scored his first goal since joining the club in the summer to cancel out Mark Duffy's first-half strike past former Iron loanee Sam Johnstone, who received a warm welcome on his return to the club.

Federico Macheda had the ball in the net in only the third minute but the lone striker was flagged offside and jeered for much of the first half for smashing a volley over the bar when the whistle had already sounded. United pressed without really penetrating the home defence as Sam Slocombe fielded a Jesse Lingard shot and found a Powell drive too hot to handle after the ex-Crewe man unloaded a fierce drive.

Although Johnstone had made a couple of punches, the opening goal was somewhat against the run of play but superbly worked. Mike Grella won possession and fed Bobby Grant, who turned Michael Keane before teeing up Duffy for an emphatic finish that lifted the home crowd.

The Reds tried to respond but Davide Petrucci fired tamely at Slocombe after a neat spin and Bebe pulled an effort wide after Petrucci won a crunching tackle in midfield. Robbie Gibbons went to ground easily under minimal contact from Marnick Vermijl so the referee Darren Drysdale rightly refused half-hearted penalty claims and Bebe's hopeful poke straight at Slocombe ended the first period in terms of entertainment.

In a dramatic start to the second half, Petrucci and Macheda set up Powell for a stinging shot that brought the very best out of Slocombe, who dived to his right to pull off a marvellous save. Scunthorpe had a much clearer shout for a penalty turned down when Grella was sent tumbling by Keane's over-zealous challenge with referee Drysdale again waving 'play on'.

The Reds capitalised and levelled the scores with 54 minutes gone. Bebe cut inside to feed Lingard and the wiry winger intelligently helped the ball on again for Powell to spank a terrific finish past Slocombe in another illustrating of his shooting prowess.

The visitors also had a penalty shout rejected when Vermijl felt he was tripped inside the box while Macheda rammed a decent opening wide from an angle. Grant snatched at a rare chance although The Iron did look dangerous on the break at times while Petrucci blasted over when a Bebe cross fell into his path just outside the area before handing over the captain's armband to Scott Wootton.

Wootton had to make one saving clearance and Connor Jennings tested Johnstone's reflexes late on as Scunthorpe finished strongly but Lingard almost won it at the death when his shot was cleared off the line and both teams will take plenty from the 1-1 draw.

United: Johnstone; Vermijl (Cole 81), M.Keane, Wootton, Brady; Bebe, Tunnicliffe, Powell, Petrucci (King 85), Lingard; Macheda. Subs not used: Sutherland, Giverin, Veseli, Blackett.
