Remembering John Denis Downie

February 20, 2013

John Denis Downie joined Manchester United from Bradford Park Avenue in 1949 for £18,000, making him our most expensive player, when he was 23-years-old. Sir Matt Busby gave him his début on March 5th against Charlton Athletic, when he scored the first goal in a 3-2 win, and he went on to score 37 goals in 116 games for the club.

John was a stalwart of the United team of the early 50′s and often roomed with Roger Byrne when playing away and became friends with Byrne and Harry McShane. He toured the USA with the club in 1950 and scored a hat trick against Tottenham. He won the league title and two runners up medals before leaving the club five years before the Munich Air Disaster.

Sadly he died this week after a long illness, in Tynemouth in Northumbria, where he moved 6 years ago from Bradford. He became a newsagent in Bradford after retiring from football and was a respected member of the community. In 1985 he retired and spent much of his time at West Bradford Golf Course. A series of strokes reduced his mobility but he continued to watch local football games, being a regular supporter at Whitley Bay FC.

Sir Alex wrote to him personally last year to wish him a speedy recovery from a minor stroke and enclosed photos of his career with United, which were greatly appreciated by his wife and family.
Rest in peace.

Former Man United director Dyke appointed FA chairman to join Gill in power at the top of English football

Former Manchester United director and TV mogul Greg Dyke has been voted through as the next FA chairman, replacing the outgoing incumbent David Bernstein.

The 65-year-old will replace Bernstein when he leaves the post after two-and-a-half years in July – and takes the helm from Saturday July 13.

Dyke, who joins an FA board that already includes United's outgoing chief executive David Gill, told the FA website: 'Football has always been a big part of my life whether playing 11-a-side on Sunday mornings or six-a-side on Thursday evenings

Main man: Former United director Dyke will take the helm at the FA

'I was brought up in a household where my father was much more interested in whether or not you had won at football than whether you had passed your exams. In my case that was just as well.

'I still turn out to play six-a-side some Thursday evenings although at my age I seem to spend more time injured than playing.

'I supported my local team Brentford as a kid where my elder brother was a junior, watched York City while at university and followed Manchester United whenever I could.

Game over: Bernstein's (left) tenure at the FA will soon come to an end

'I got involved in how the game was run when I was first involved in buying sports rights as Chairman of ITV Sport in the late Eighties and later at the BBC.

'I learnt a lot in the years when I was on the Board of Manchester United and have seen the other side of the professional game at Brentford.'

Football man: Dyke's local team while growing up was Brentford - where he became non-executive chairman in 2006

The FA said in a statement: 'The Football Association Board has today unanimously approved the nomination for Greg Dyke to be appointed independent FA chairman.

'Dyke, 65, will take over as chairman from David Bernstein when he leaves the post after two-and-a-half years in July - subject to approval by the FA council. The appointment will take effect from Saturday, July 13.

'This follows a recruitment process led by FA independent director Roger Devlin (chairman of the nominations committee) with fellow board members Roger Burden and Keith Lamb.

Football man: Dyke with former BBC Director General, John Birt

'In a high-profile broadcasting industry career, Dyke has worked as director general of the BBC and managing director of London Weekend Television.

'Dyke has had a long background in football. He was a director of Manchester United in the late nineties and since 2006 he has been non-executive chairman of Brentford Football Club, the team he supported as a boy. He will relinquish this role at the end of the season to take up his new post at the FA.'

Red alert: United director Gill (seen with Dyke) is also on the FA board

Quote:
A FIT AND PROPER FOOTBALL PERSON
There is no doubting Greg Dyke's love of football.

He might have sat in the hottest chairs in television as director general of the BBC and managing director of London Weekend Television but he still turns out on Thursday evenings to play a local game of six-a-side at the age of 65.

Dyke was born in Hayes, west London, in 1947 and has risen from being a trainee reporter at the Hillingdon Mirror to become one of the most respected and resourceful television executives in British broadcasting.

His latest proposed appointment as chairman of the Football Association is no real surprise considering his reputation for leadership and getting things done.

Despite leaving Hayes Grammar School with one grade 'E' in A-level mathematics, Dyke has always shown an aptitude when it comes to business and budgets and being ahead of the game.

At LWT he made his name as the brains behind The Six O'Clock Show, fronted by Michael Aspel, with co-hosts Danny Baker and Janet Street-Porter, which is seen by critics as being the first example of British tabloid TV.

It led to him becoming programme controller at ailing station TV-am in 1983, where famously he embarked on a radical relaunch to take on the BBC in the ratings.

He devised a high-risk schedule based around bingo, celebrity gossip and horoscopes and, most crucially, the introduction of Roland Rat, a hand puppet which lured viewers in their millions.

As such he is also credited as the man who dumbed down British television but when Granada bought out LWT, Dyke is said to have made a fortune.

Dyke was among the consortium which successfully bid for the Channel 5 licence in 1995 and he became the first chairman of the new channel.

Yet while his television success will always be associated with Roland Rat his television demise came at the BBC, although he is remembered as a boss who cut administration costs and encouraged programme makers.

As such he was a rare example of a top executive who was universally liked and respected by the employees, even if he did lose the terrestrial rights to Premier League football to ITV during his tenure.

His downfall came when he resigned from the BBC in January 2004, following the publication of the Hutton Report which saw the BBC forced to apologise for errors in reporting the suicide of scientist Dr David Kelly.

In 2006 Dyke turned again to football, becoming non-executive chairman of his beloved Brentford, a club he has supported since childhood, although he also holds a large candle for Manchester United.

He served on the Old Trafford board as a non-executive director in the 1990s when he was the lone board member to oppose a takeover bid from BSkyB, a deal which was subsequently rejected by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

As such there is no doubt he understands the intricacies of footballing politics.

Gak ditaruh di thread Yorke/ Cole karena ini ada dua- duanya.

Yorke and Cole back the boss

manutd.com - Treble winners Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole believe Sir Alex Ferguson has a formula for success when deciding how to rotate his strikers for important Manchester United fixtures.

The boss has the unenviable task of choosing between Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez this Easter weekend as the Reds face Sunderland on Saturday in the Barclays Premier League before tackling Chelsea in the FA Cup just 48 hours later.

But Yorke, who scored 66 goals in 152 United appearances, is confident his former manager will get it right and might even take into account previous form after Rooney and Chicha both recently scored against Rafa Benitez’s men at Old Trafford.

“Well this is what the manger gets paid the big bucks for - to make these types of calls,” Dwight recently told ManUtd.com. “Thankfully, he gets it right more times than wrong. I’m sure he will work it out because he has a good way of doing it.

“That was evident against Chelsea when he brought Rooney and Chicharito back into the attack and they both scored. They have a good record against this team. Some players naturally love to score against certain teams and the manager does his homework.

“You just have a knack of scoring against certain teams, ask any striker. Coley always seemed to score against Newcastle every time he played and every time I played against Coventry City, I scored.

“I don’t know how it works but there are just teams that you always score against. It does happen and it happened for me. I loved playing Coventry and Coley loved Newcastle.”

Of course, Yorke and Cole formed a formidable partnership during the 1998/99 campaign that went down as one of the greatest ever. But despite this, the pair were often rotated as Sir Alex fielded Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in certain fixtures.

Speaking at the launch of The Legends Are Back, a forthcoming charity match between United and Real Madrid, Cole echoed Yorke’s sentiment that the boss will make the right decisions this weekend but explained why it’s never easy missing out as a player.

“That’s the manager’s decision to make; we were in that position 10 or 12 years ago,” Andy said. “Everyone has run into a little bit of form and it’s hard to say one is playing a bit better than the other.

“Everyone is asking who the manager is going to pick, but that’s why he gets paid to make those decisions. Naturally, you are bitterly disappointed when you are left out but everyone plays their part in the end, which is a good thing.”

Freddy Adu Ditukar Dengan Kleberson

Sheringham: All about the boss
Report by Adam Marshall

Quote:
"It's all down to the drive from the manager. Everybody loves the aura of Manchester United but, if you haven't got a manager in charge that's like Sir Alex, the drive doesn't come."

- Teddy Sheringham

Treble-winning striker Teddy Sheringham thinks Sir Alex Ferguson's side will be worthy winners of the title if they can secure at least seven points from the remaining six games.

Sunday's victory at Stoke City widened the gap at the top to 15 points again with the Reds in action at West Ham on Wednesday while second-placed Manchester City entertain Wigan in a dress-rehearsal for the FA Cup final.

Sheringham, who won three titles at Old Trafford, was quick to pay tribute to Sir Alex in an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com ahead of his participation in the Red Heart United Legends game against Real Madrid on 2 June.

"Without a doubt, United would be worthy winners," he enthused. "They have been the most consistent team.

"I mean you could, after losing one [league title], feel let down and just wither away but that's all down to the manager. He makes you respond if you have won or lost. That's done and dusted - move on and get the next one."

Sheringham revealed how the manager spells out his message at the end of a campaign rather than during the pre-season.

"It's when you are leaving at the end of the season that he makes sure you come back with the right attitude," he stated.

"It's all down to the drive from the manager. Everybody loves the aura of Manchester United but, if you haven't got a manager in charge that's like Sir Alex, the drive doesn't come. It's all down to him, without a doubt.

"I think football clubs are all about the manager. "If the manager is not fully in control and in charge, you have problems around the club. That's exactly what the Manchester United situation is - it's all about the manager.

"He does keep going and as long he's fit, well and healthy why shouldn't he continue?"

The midweek trip to Upton Park sees United tackle another of Sheringham's former clubs in West Ham and the ex-England international appreciates the Hammers relish putting one over the Reds.

"It's always a great atmosphere at Upton Park and they love Manchester United coming to town," he added. "West Ham love beating United so it will be a big game for them.

"But the title is over. It's done and dusted and on its way back to Old Trafford in my eyes and it has been for about four or five weeks."

Former United and England player Brian Greenhoff dies aged 60

The skilful centre-half, who also played in midfield, passed away at his home in Rochdale this morning

Former Manchester United and England star Brian Greenhoff has died at the age of 60.

The skilful centre-half, who also played in midfield, passed away at his home in Rochdale this morning.

Brian, who was born in Barnsley, joined United in 1968 after representing Yorkshire Schoolboys.

He played in the same team as his brother, Jimmy, who joined the Reds in 1976.

Brian lifted the FA Cup with his beloved United in 1977 and won a Second Division winners medal in 1975.

Jimmy Greenhoff and his brother Brian holding the FA Cup after they had both played in the Manchester United team beating Liverpool in the final

He made 271 appearances for the Reds, scoring 17 times and won 18 caps for his country.

Brian's first-team bow came at the age of just 20 in 1973 and played his last game for United in 1979.

He was worshipped by the Stretford End and something of a cult hero with fans recognising him as one of their own.

Brian headed back across the Pennines to join Leeds United following his stint at Old Trafford and later went on to play for and coach Rochdale.

He moved with his family to Menorca before returning to Rochdale and last year wrote an autobiography.

Police were called to Brian's address this morning following reports of a sudden death as a matter of procedure.

The case has now been passed to the coroner.

A statement released to the M.E.N. by Brian's family said: "We regret to inform of Brian's passing this morning, Wednesday 22nd May at the age of 60 years old.

" Brian was a proud and much loved brother, husband of Maureen, father of Paul, Brian and Peter, grandfather to Jack, James and Harry and will be sorely missed by his family, who he made very proud in his distinguished life and career."

Ron Davies passes away

Manchester United is saddened to learn former player Ron Davies has died. He was 70 years old.

The news was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon by Southampton FC, where he spent the largest part of his career, prior to joining the Reds for a brief spell in the mid 1970's.

Davies made 281 appearances and scored 153 goals for the Saints, with one of the highlights being a game against the famous United team of Best, Law and Charlton on 16 August 1969. He headed in all four of Southampton's goals that afternoon at Old Trafford as the Reds were routed 4-1, a performance which apparently led Sir Matt Busby to describe Davies as "the best number nine in Europe."

It was Tommy Docherty who eventually signed Davies for the Reds, in November 1974, but he only deployed the Welsh international as a substitute on 10 occasions, eight of them in the club's promotion-winning campaign from the Second Division (now the Championship).

Davies later played for Millwall, adding the London club to a CV also featuring Chester City, Luton Town, Norwich City and Portsmouth, as well as Wales for whom he won 29 caps and scored 9 goals between 1964 and 1974.

During his short stay at Old Trafford, Davies was a team-mate of players including Brian Greenhoff, who passed away last week at the age of 60.

Staff at Manchester United extend sincere condolences to Ron Davies' family and friends at this difficult time.
