Argentina veteran Juan Sebastian Veron has admitted regrets over leaving Manchester United.

The 35-year-old midfielder spent two years with Sir Alex Ferguson's side from 2001-03 before transferring to fellow Premier League club Chelsea.

Veron has since made the move back to Argentina to play for his boyhood club Estudiantes, but believes he could have been happier staying at Old Trafford.
Decision

"The decision to move wasn't easy. If it was today I think I would approach it very differently," Veron told The Guardian.

"I mean, obviously to a certain extent one makes decisions because one is fairly sure - but I think with hindsight perhaps I wouldn't have moved because I was really comfortable at Manchester, and even the lads came to see me two or three times to talk me into staying.

"I guess Mr Ferguson also has a pretty big say in who stays and who goes, but I think if the whole thing happened today I might handle it differently."

Veron is preparing to represent Argentina in his third World Cup after playing in 1998 and 2002, and is no stranger to the backlash that can stem from the side not meeting the country's expectations.

The midfielder is hoping that the public pressure does not fall too heavily on Barcelona ace Lionel Messi in South Africa, particularly as the star striker has been the subject of inevitable comparisons with Argentina legend and current national team coach Diego Maradona.

"Messi here is within a team that has not yet found its game," added Veron.

"He's used to playing in a team [at Barcelona] that both plays really well and knows exactly what they're playing at. And the Argentinian public is difficult - they expect the kid to have Maradona's personality; they want him to dribble past 10 guys, score, and win the match alone.

"And Maradona is the only one who could do that ... it's impossible. I think Messi is a great player - maybe the best, but with a completely different style."

Difference

Veron, who played with Maradona during the early days of his career at Boca Juniors, was keen to emphasise the disparity between the Argentina boss and 22-year-old Barca ace Messi.

"Playing with Maradona was amazing. His personality radiated energy: he was the guy who spoke, who ruled," he said.

"Leo is the opposite: he's more submissive, he's shy. And I think he can feel all this stuff - he's a kid that is susceptible, prone to feeling low or at least uncomfortable. He's still a kid."

Pretoria - Juan Sebastian Veron memang tidak menampilkan performa gemilang ketika berkarir bersama Manchester United. Meski demikian, pemain Argentina tersebut mengaku menyesal pernah meninggalkan si 'Setan Merah'.

Setelah sukses mengantar Lazio merebut Scudetto, Copa Italia dan Piala Super Italia, Veron direkrut MU. Pada 2001, pemain berkepala gundul ini didaratkan ke Old Trafford dengan nilai 28 juta pounds alias yang termahal di Liga Primer kala itu.

Sayang sekali, performa Veron meredup. Ia gagal menyesuaikan diri dengan gaya permainan cepat sepakbola Inggris. Selama dua musim dengan melakoni 51 laga, Veron hanya berhasil menjaringkan tujuh gol.

Pembelian Veron disebut-sebut sebagai pembelian MU yang gagal. Ekspektasi berlebihan yang diterima pemain berjuluk La Brujita itu menjadi beban buatnya, belum lagi ia sering mengalami cedera yang memaksa dia absen dalam waktu yang lama.

"Keputusan untuk hengkang (dari MU) bukanlah hal yang mudah. Jika ketika itu adalah hari ini maka saya rasa saya akan menghadapinya dengan sangat berbeda," ujar pemain internasional Argentina itu seperti dilansir dari Sky Sports.

"Maksud saya, jelas ke satu tingkat tertentu membuat keputusan karena satu hal itu cukup yakin - tetapi saya jika berpikir ke belakang mungkin saya tidak akan pindah karena saya merasa sangat nyaman di Manchester. Bahkan beberapa rekan membujuk saya untuk tinggal."

Akibat tidak puas dengan performa Veron, Sir Alex Ferguson setuju menjualnya ke Chelsea pada musim 2003-04. Sebelum akhirnya si pemain sempat dipinjamkan ke Inter Milan dan lantas mudik ke Argentina dan bergabung dengan Estudiantes sejak 2006.

"Saya rasa Tuan Ferguson juga memiliki pengaruh yang besar soal (pemain) siapa yang akan tinggal dan yang pergi. Tetapi saya pikir semua hal yang pernah terjadi hari ini saya mungkin bisa mengatasinya secara berbeda," pungkas dia.

Juan Sebastian Veron has warned Carlos Tevez that life at Manchester United is not always easy.

Tevez has been the subject of a summer-long transfer saga between his current club, West Ham, and the Premier League champions.

United are hopeful they are close to completing the deal, but former Red Devils midfielder Veron has told Tevez he is not guaranteed to succeed at Old Trafford.

Veron joined United in 2001 for a then British transfer record fee of £28.1million, but he failed to live up to expectations and was shipped out to Chelsea two years later.

Speaking from that experience, Veron admits he has explained to Tevez about the pressures he could face at United.

"To triumph at the club is not easy, even if you are a superstar," Veron told The Sun.

"Some players leave because of the enormous and constant pressure. Carlos will find that United is not like West Ham in any aspect.

"The change will be enormous and if things do not go well he could suffer a mortal fall in fortune.

"If a player has good fortune from the very first day everyone is positive. But, if problems appear it is not so easy to triumph.

"The only possible goal there is success. Second place is failure and this burns deep into every player and can affect you."

Veron: Karier Saya Sudah Habis

BUENOS AIRES – Gelandang veteran Juan Sebastian Veron tak mau berharap banyak di Timnas Argentina. Dia bahkan mengklaim kariernya bersama Albiceleste sudah habis.


Caretaker Sergio Batista punya tugas berat. Saat ini, dia wajib meloloskan Lionel Messi dkk ke putaran final Piala Dunia 2014. Tapi sebelumnya, Batista disebut-sebut bakal merombak skuad Albiceleste.

Batista akan melakoni debutnya sebagai pelatih sementara Argentina ketika menghadapi Spanyol dalam laga ujicoba September mendatang. Sayang, nama Veron tak masuk dalan skuad dan Batista lebih memilih memanggil gelandang muda Ever Banega.

Melihat kondisi seperti ini, Veron tak lagi berharap banyak bisa mencuri perhatian sang pelatih.

“Fakatanya adalah saya tak pernah berhenti berpikir mengapa tak masuk skuad melawan Spanyol. Waktu saya bersama timnas sudah selesai dan tak ada lagi kesempatan,” kata mantan punggawa Lazio sebagaimana disitat Goal, Sabtu (28/8/2010).

“Saya pikir Batista mulai menyatukan tim yang akan tampil di Piala Dunia dan saya tak akan ada di sana,” lanjutnya.

Kendati demikian, Veron tetap berharap El Checho –julukan Batista- tetap bertahan sebagai juru racik Albiceleste.

“Saya berkomunikasi dengan El Checho beberapa kali dan itu menyenangkan. Saya menghormatinya dan senang dia menjadi pelatih Argentina,” jelas pemain yang kini membela Estudiantes.

“Saya yakin dia memiliki keuntungan dibanding kandiat lain, dia tahu banyak soal skuad dan membuat perbedaan,” pungkasnya.

Bola.net - Mantan bintang Lazio dan gelandang timnas Argentina, Juan Sebastian Veron memutuskan untuk pensiun dari dunia si kulit bundar.

Pemain yang juga pernah membela Manchester United ini bakal absen setelah menyelesaikan pertandingan terakhirnya pada 31 Oktober nanti ketika timnya saat ini Estudiantes menghadapi Racing Club.

Veron yang saat ini berumur 36 tahun ini memulai karirnya tim junior Estudiantes pada 1993, kemudian pada tahun 1994 Veron promosi ke tim senior hingga 1996.

Setelah itu, Veron berkelana dari satu klub ke klub lainnya, tercatat tujuh klub pernah dibelanya sejak meninggalkan Estudiantes. Boca Juniors, Sampdoria, Parma, Lazio, Manchester United, Chelsea dan Internazionale pernah merasakan servisnya.

Di Tim Tango, Veron dipanggil pertama kali pada gelaran Piala Dunia 1998 di Prancis, di mana Argentina gagal melaju ke babak final setelah disingkirkan oleh Belanda di babak quarter-final.

Pada 26 Agustus 2010, Veron memutuskan untuk pensiun dari timnas, namun, ketika Argentina dilatih oleh Alejandro Sabella, Veron dan Juan Roman Riquelme kembali dipanggil. (foti/end)

Former Manchester United playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron has come out of retirement to play a season at Argentine club Estudiantes and is donating his wages to a junior team.

Veron, who is currently the club's technical secretary and was sporting director last season, signed a new player's contract until next June and will appear for them in the 2013-14 Argentine first division league season.

The 38-year-old spent two years at United from 2001-2003 after signing for £28.1million from Lazio. He was then shipped on to Chelsea for £15million.

David Beckham set a precedence when he donated all his PSG wages to a Paris children's hospital.

Veron, who grew up playing youth football for Estudiantes, kept himself fit playing for a team that won the La Plata amateur league last season.

'I don't think I'm in the form of that time (in 2009) when we won the Libertadores Cup, but I'm just as motivated because I love playing football,' the midfielder told Radio Del Plata earlier this week.

Veron had another spell at Estudiantes from 2007-2012 but had to retire a year ago because of back and ankle problems.

Last week, he was training again with his former side after promising to return for the 2017 Copa Libertadores if fans bought 65 per cent of boxes at the club's new stadium.

Veron brought the initial curtain down on his playing career in 2014 after spells with United, Lazio, Chelsea and Inter.

'He told us he wants to return, that from January he will return as a player,' midfielder Israel Damonte told La Oral Deportiva. 'He will play from January for the tournament [league] and Copa [Libertadores in 2017].'

The former Premier League star had been taking part in his own personal training programme in Argentina recently, juggling his potential new role with his job as chairman of the club.

He played in practice matches under the watchful eye of manager and former Arsenal defender Nelson Vivas at the club's training facilities in La Plata.

Vivas played for Arsenal between 1998 and 2001, before moving on to Inter Milan, another of Veron's former clubs.

Estudiantes defender Julian Marchioni was impressed by the playmaker's showing and said: 'Veron is the same as always, he didn't misplace a pass. It's something incredible.'

The ex-Argentina international, who turns 42 in March, will play in a friendly game before playing competitively in the Copa Libertadores in January.

Veron has a long affinity with the La Plata outfit, beginning his career there back in 1994 before travelling across to Europe and back again.
