Jose Mourinho slams his Manchester United players for being more interested in 'tricks and PlayStation football' than killing off Basle tie

* Jose Mourinho has criticised his players for disrespecting their opposition
* The Portuguese claimed his players did not to enough to kill the tie off

Jose Mourinho accused his Manchester United stars of disrespecting Basle on Tuesday, claiming they were more interested in fancy flicks and ‘PlayStation football’ than killing the tie off.

United were cruising to victory thanks to goals from Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku but Mourinho was left angry at a lack of professionalism before Marcus Rashford’s third.

‘After 2-0 I think everything changed and we stopped to play, stopped to think, stopped to play seriously,’ Mourinho fumed. ‘We stopped to make the right decisions on the pitch and we could put ourselves in trouble.

‘Bad decisions, fantasy football, PlayStation football, tricks and when you stopped to play as a team and when you stopped to play seriously I don't like and you gamble a little bit.

‘The players probably felt that the game was under control with the 2-0 but football is football and you have to respect your opponent.’

Jose Mourinho accused his Manchester United stars of disrespecting Basle in their 3-0 win. The Portuguese berated his players for not killing the tie off when the score was 2-0. Mourniho believes English sides are 'in the second level' of European clubs compared to others

Mourinho claimed his side were ‘under attack’ before the Champions League’s opening night, insisting they do not hide behind injuries, although he had a full squad training at Carrington on Monday.

The Portuguese also reiterated that United are at a severe disadvantage in this competition and they lie behind Europe’s elite after a number of huge scores across the continent.

‘We had yesterday a huge attack on some of our important players and we didn't cry,’ Mourinho added.

‘For these teams - Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich - the Champions League starts in February. Now is just the warm-up.

‘In February, when us English teams are trying to survive after the winter period, they are fresh and ready after this warm-up.

‘We are in the second level. The second level is “let’s qualify, let’s make the points” and if we make the knockout phase let’s enjoy playing against the big guys.’

MOURINHO: "FOOTBALL NEEDS KIDS"

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed it is refreshing to have Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in his team because of the youthful exuberance they bring to the dressing room, as well as their undoubted quality on the pitch.

The attacking duo both came through the ranks at United, and have gone on to become important parts of the first-team squad.

Rashford has already netted three goals in his six appearances across all competitions this term, the latest coming in the Reds’ 3-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Basel on Tuesday night, while Lingard has provided one assist and looked sharp.

Yet, despite their prominence, the boss admitted he still sees the young pair as “kids”, and that he believes they are the kind of characters football needs.

“When I look at Marcus and Jesse, it’s like they’re still 15,” Mourinho told reporters. “The way they live, the way they train – it’s simple for them – they enjoy playing the game.

“I see them as kids, and football needs kids sometimes, simple kids just enjoying the game.”

When asked if he felt it was unusual how comfortable Rashford is in a red shirt, despite being just 19 years old, Mourinho declared when a player loves the game, everything else comes as second nature.

“[Rashford] loves football, he loves to train, and he loves to play games,” the manager said. “When you love to play; you love full stadiums, you love big matches, you love responsibility.

“It looks to me as if everything around him is very normal,” he added. “It looks like everything is simple – his entourage doesn’t seem to be an entourage of a complex dimension like you see in some players nowadays.”

Jose Mourinho remains unbeaten at home on any given Sunday as Manchester United boss makes it 105 league matches without a single loss

* Manchester United beat Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon
* The victory ensures Jose Mourinho has never lost a home match on a Sunday
* The Portuguese has played 105 league games, winning 81 and drawing 24

It was normal Sunday service resumed for Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford as Manchester United beat Everton 4-0 in the final Premier League fixture of the weekend.

The result saw United remain level on points with neighbours Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, as strikes from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

A strong win and keeping up an unbeaten start to the season should have come as a surprise to few, and not only because of the scintillating start made by the 13-time champions.

Jose Mourinho has never lost a match at home as manager that has taken place on a Sunday

A break down of Mourinho's home record on Sundays across his career - courtesy of Opta

Also on their side was Mourinho's incredible record in home matches on a Sunday for every team he has managed.

In 105 league matches the Portuguese has managed at home on a Sunday for Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United, he has never lost a single game.

Mourinho has led his side to victory in 81 of those fixtures across the continent, drawing on 24 occasions.

And the record still stands when taking into account matches in all competitions, winning 87 of his 113 fixtures.

The good fortune he enjoys at home doesn't quite extend to away trips, with last year's trip to Chelsea on a Sunday proving a particularly chastening experience, losing 4-0 against his former club.

He won't be able to rely on his team's Sunday success in the near future, however. United are not scheduled to play on Sunday at home again before at least December.

Manchester United face crunch time as boss Jose Mourinho says he is not getting carried away by title talk

* Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 4-0 to keep pace with Manchester City
* Boss Jose Mourinho says it is too early to talk about winning the Premier League
* United will face Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea in their next four league ties

David Beckham would have admired the ruthless efficiency of it all, as he sat up in the Old Trafford stands. Sir Alex Ferguson, too.

Manchester United's Treble winners set the club record of 19 points from the opening seven Premier League games in 1999 that was equalled with this emphatic win over hapless Crystal Palace.

The current United side have scored two more goals in the process. So much for Jose Mourinho's cautious approach.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is not getting carried away by talk of winning the title

He was clearly irked by questions before this game that United have not come across any of their main rivals yet — and that will change soon enough — but this is the kind of opposition they struggled to put away last season.

This year United are doing it with some ease. Six clean sheets in seven games, 21 goals scored. A draw at Stoke is the only blot on their record.

Mourinho's side have hit the ground running in every sense — this was the fourth time in five games that United have scored inside the opening five minutes.

Juan Mata was the first on target against Palace, assisted by the excellent Marcus Rashford, before Marouane Fellaini struck twice and Romelu Lukaku equalled Andy Cole's record of seven goals from his first seven league games.

Mata believes United have become a more clinical outfit, after relying too heavily on Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season.

He said: 'We're being more efficient in front of goal, we're not training more on finishing than last season, it's just down to confidence.

'Maybe it's true that last season Zlatan was scoring almost every game and we tried to help with some goals, but he was very responsible for our attack.

This United team have equalled the 1999 record of 19 points from their first seven matches

This season, everyone seems to enjoy the offensive duties. I think 10 players have scored already. Everyone is performing. As a manager, he cannot ask for more.'

Mourinho will demand more, of course. United face Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea in three of their next four league games after the international break.

No wonder he wasn't getting carried away. 'It's too early,' he said. 'Seven matches.'

For Roy Hodgson and Palace, the picture couldn't be more different. Seven games, seven defeats, no goals scored. They are in uncharted territory for any English club.

'All I can say is that it's been a chastening experience to try to compete against these teams and give them a game,' said Hodgson.

'Their quality is such that they are wiping aside most teams who come here.'

SUPER STAT

Romelu Lukaku has scored 20 goals in his last 22 Premier League games, two more than the Crystal Palace squad in that period.

Jose Mourinho stat exposes his failings in top six clashes as Peter Schmeichel criticises Manchester United tactics against Liverpool: 'I found it boring'

* Jose Mourinho has only taken points away to top six in 0-0 draws since 2015
* The Manchester United boss has been criticised for his tactics away to Liverpool
* Mourinho is accused of 'parking the bus' to secure a point away at Anfield
* Club legend Peter Schmeichel says United should be playing to win every game

Jose Mourinho has taken just five points from his last 10 games away to the Premier League's top six, all of which have come in 0-0 draws, a damning statistic has revealed.

The Manchester United manager has been widely criticised for installing defensive tactics in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, which made for a less-than thrilling spectacle for hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide.

But while some believe Mourinho was simply being pragmatic by 'parking the bus', his recent record in away games against his title rivals over the last three years has been less than impressive.

Since January 2015, his teams (Chelsea and Manchester United) have failed to win an away game against the Premier League's top six, conceding 16 goals and scoring just four, three of which came in a 5-3 reverse with Tottenham in 2015.

The statistic was revealed as club legend Peter Schmeichel spoke out against the current manager, saying Manchester United should be looking to beat every team that is put in front of them, home or away.

Schmeichel told Sky Sports' Monday Night Football: 'Only time will tell if Mourinho has changed enough to change his way in those games.

'I found it [the game] really boring. It might be naivety or being romantic but I think Manchester United should play to win every game, their style and brand every game and should be good enough to win every game.'

Mourinho appeared to use defensive tactics in order to deal with Liverpool's attacking threat. Peter Schmeichel believes Manchester United should be playing to win every game. Mourinho may have to change his management style in big games to win the Premier League

But Schmeichel also revealed that even the great Sir Alex Ferguson considered more negative approaches at rare moments during in his 27-year tenure, and a huge game against Liverpool was one such occasion.

He continued: 'I can remember few occasion where we would change. One specific game was Liverpool in the FA Cup final, billed to be this incredible final, biggest ever and Sir Alex was afraid of Steve McManaman so wanted to man mark him, which was out of our way of playing.

'He brought in experienced players to discuss and said this is what I’m thinking and our reaction was we didn't like to change. We'd rather go out there and trust in the quality of the team rather than disrupting our rhythm and risk losing'

Manchester United won that FA Cup final when Eric Cantona scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute.

Garth Crooks launches scathing attack on 'cowardly' Jose Mourinho after Manchester United play out disappointing draw against Liverpool

* BBC pundit Garth Crooks slammed Jose Mourinho for his 'cowardly' tactics
* Mourinho appeared to play very defensively in the goalless draw with Liverpool
* Crooks says the Manchester United boss was being hypocritical with the display

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was subject to heavy criticism from Garth Crooks following his side's goalless draw away to Liverpool on Saturday.

The pundit labelled the display as 'cowardly' as Mourinho set his side to soak up Liverpool's attacking threat.

The Manchester club, who were in formidable goal scoring form prior to the match, offered very little going forward on a disappointing day at Anfield.

Crooks used his weekly Team of the Week to share his strong opinions on Mourinho's defensive tactics.

He wrote: 'I don't know how Mourinho has the nerve. I remember him slamming former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce for ''parking the bus'' having seen the Hammers produce a brilliant display at Stamford Bridge some years ago.

'He has also used the term to describe other performances by those who insist on containing the opposition and have refused to play an open game against his teams.

'So forgive my annoyance when Mourinho adopts the same tactics to save his own behind on occasions.'

BBC pundit Garth Crooks slammed Jose Mourinho for his 'cowardly' tactics on Saturday. Mourinho appeared to use defensive tactics in order to deal with Liverpool's attacking threat

Fans were given warning of a potentially defensive display as the team sheet was revealed.

Two of United's most creative talents, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford, found themselves on the bench as the side looked content to sit back.

Crooks continued: 'He saw off Anthony Martial and later gave Rashford something to think about in a game in which Liverpool were allowed to dominate the play.

'Sir Alex Ferguson would never have subjected United fans, or one of his teams, to such a cowardly display, especially at Liverpool.

'United going to Anfield looking for a draw? Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola must be laughing himself to sleep.'

The draw leaves United second in the Premier League and will give rivals City confidence in their pursuit of the title.

Manchester United in danger of losing their identity under Jose Mourinho in desperation to win Premier League again, warns Craig Bellamy

* Manchester United beat Benfica 1-0 in Champions League on Wednesday night
* It came days after uber-defensive display in 0-0 draw with Liverpool
* Jose Mourinho often sets up negatively in important Premier League matches
* Craig Bellamy has claimed United fans will soon get fed-up with this approach

Manchester United are at risk of losing their identity under Jose Mourinho, according to Craig Bellamy.

The former Liverpool and Manchester City striker hasn't been impressed by Mourinho's negative approach in certain matches, notably the goalless draw at Anfield against Liverpool on Saturday.

United also looked sluggish for much of their 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday night, leading to more questions about Mourinho's approach.

And Bellamy believes United's fans will quickly lose patience with Mourinho if he continues to approach important games in this manner, regardless of whether he delivers trophies or not.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Bellamy said: 'Manchester United are more than titles. As a football club they have an identity that's worth more than a title.

'As a club they have a certain way of playing and as a club they've let that go for the time being.

'Going from winning [the league] on a regular basis, to now coming off it has got them in that much of a panic.

'Bobby Charlton said it through the years that Mourinho isn't a Man United type of manager.

Jose Mourinho's approach is a turn-off for Manchester United fans, according to Craig Bellamy. The Sky Sports pundit believes United's identity will be lost under Mourinho's defensive style

'At the moment, for their desperation to win trophies, to get back to the top, they will bring him in and they will let it go for now.

'But there will only be a period Manchester United supporters and Manchester United as a football club will allow this to happen for.

'Manchester United is a huge club, with a huge tradition, and you don't want to be going too far away from that.'

Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal as manager in 2016 and won both the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.

But United have not won the Premier League since 2012-13, the final season before Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and are desperate to change that.

Mourinho won the Premier League three times during his two spells as manager of Chelsea.

Bellamy's comments come despite United scoring 21 goals in eight Premier League matches so far this season, including 4-0 wins over West Ham, Swansea and Everton.

They have also beaten Basle 3-0 and CSKA Moscow 4-1 in the Champions League.

Manchester United are the defenders of a lost art under Jose Mourinho... he is rebuilding the spirit of Old Trafford from the back

* The wailing and moaning about Manchester United's defending is dragging on
* Jose Mourinho has been accused of killing football and betraying United's spirit
* But his pragmatic approach makes them the most likely to win major trophies
* There is nothing reprehensible about good defending — it is half the game

All the wailing and moaning about Jose Mourinho parking everything from a bus to a battleship in front of Manchester United’s goal goes to the heart of the malaise in English football lurking behind the false facade of this week’s Champions League results.

When it suits Mourinho, United are the defenders of the lost art.

The lost art of defending in our national game.

That is a deficiency which makes it unlikely that any of the Premier League moneybags currently sitting atop their Champions League groups will actually go on to lift the European crown.

With the possible exception of… United.

Mourinho has been charged with all manner of offences, from killing football to betraying the spirit of Old Trafford.

Now he is asking: ’Is it a crime to defend well?’

It is a question well put.

Jose Mourinho took a swipe at those who question his tactics as Manchester United manager. Mourinho is not killing the spirit of Old Trafford at Manchester United — he is rebuilding it

To the dewy-eyed romantics. Because nothing – not sport, not marriage, not bringing up the kids – can be solely about romance. Battles have to be won in every field of human contact, bills for the candlelit suppers must be paid.

Rightly asked, also, of the rival managers who cast aspersions on Mourinho’s methods. Antonio Conte, for one, could have done with stationing at least a Ford Fiesta in Chelsea’s penalty area when they were two up against Roma on Wednesday night, only to end up drawing 3-3. Nor would his declining champions be below Watford if they had not let in four times as many Premier League goals as United.

Mourinho is not the cosiest personality in the managers club but his knockers have short memories and myopic vision.

Lest they need reminding, United began this season with a glut of four-goal victories. In case they need glasses, the league table tells us that in eight Premier League games they have scored 21 goals, six more than Spurs who are London’s self-professed high priests of attacking football.

Mauricio Pochettino is wittering on about being short of top players – er, Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Loris? But the evidence suggests that Mourinho has only turned defensive of late when deprived by injuries of a serviceable quota of midfield men.

That was the case in the 0-0 bore at Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp remarked that he would not want to play Mourinho’s style.

Well, gentlemen, if you don’t like it do something about it.

Sticking seven past a team of Mars bars in Slovenia does not excuse Liverpool’s laboured failure to turn possession into so much as a single goal against United. Not when you’ve only scored one more Premier League goal than you’ve let in this season.

The greatest teams are built from the back. Always have been. That is the unlearned lesson which is finally catching up with the most honourable Arsene Wenger.

Pep Guardiola appears to have caught on. He has only unleashed the full force of Manchester City’s mega-millions attack now that they, too, have closed the door at the back. Conceding just four league goals has as much to do with him being two points clear of Mourinho as the 29 they have scored.

There is nothing reprehensible about good defending. It is half the game. The shortage of that quality in this country is one of the failings dragging at England’s heels when it comes to World Cup and European Championship finals.

Playing against weak defending does nothing to develop high-class attacking.

Greatness, so many seem to need reminding, is about being able to execute the highest skills under the severest pressure. That takes practise, on a weekly basis.

The best football in this country is presently being played in Manchester. But not only at City. United are doing their bit, too.

Add in their Champions League matches plus a League Cup tie apiece and the records this season reads:

City – played 12, goals for 39, goals against 6.

United – played 13, goals for 34, goals against 6.

That gives City a goal scoring ratio of 3.25 per game, with United on 2.62.

Jose Mourinho is not betraying the Old Trafford tradition. He is rebuilding it. And not only from the back.

May he linger several more winters, before taking a one-way Eurostar to Paris.

Default Re: Manchester United under Jose Mourinho

Manchester United 'deserved' to lose against Huddersfield, admits Jose Mourinho: 'The team that started with emotion, aggression and desire won'

* Goals from Aaron Mooy and Lauren Depoitre gave the promoted side the victory
* United boss Jose Mourinho accepted that his side were second best on Saturday
* 'When the best team wins (there is) nothing to say,' the Portuguese manager said

Jose Mourinho ripped into his Manchester United stars by questioning their attitude after an embarrassing defeat at Huddersfield Town.

United have dropped five points in a week to fall further behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and Mourinho was left seething on Saturday night.

He demanded his players front up after hearing Ander Herrera bemoan a lack of passion during a post-match television interview.

‘I heard that Ander Herrera in his interviews saying that the attitude and desire was really poor,’ Mourinho said.

‘Oh my God! When a player says that and a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why because I can’t explain why.’

Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre capitalised on mistakes by Juan Mata and Victor Lindelof but Mourinho insisted a lack of desire was his team’s undoing.

Manchester United lost to newly-promoted Huddersfield in the Premier League on Saturday. United manager Jose Mourinho admitted the better team won at the John Smith's Stadium

The Portuguese also suggested it was the worst performance he has witnessed as a manager.

Mourinho added: ‘In the first half I was just waiting for that mistake. It was Mata and Victor but it could be another one because the attitude was really poor. So they beat us on attitude.

‘When I lose matches, I like to lose matches because the opponent was better than us, had more quality than us. When you lose a match because of attitude, that’s really bad.

‘Of course it concerns me. If it happened today, why can’t it happen tomorrow? I don’t even remember a friendly match where the attitude was so poor.

‘I know you like to individualise the mistakes and defeats. I think it’s very unfair because the mistakes of him in the second goal and Mata in the first goal belong to the context.’

Herrera claimed United ‘lost every ball’ and didn’t have enough fight. ‘When you play against a team that normally you are better than, you have to match their aggression and passion,’ he said.

‘We didn’t do that. It cannot happen again. They were more passionate than us, more aggressive. We cannot accept that.

David Wagner revelled in the victory secured by Huddersfield’s early aggression. He said: ‘I live in Huddersfield so I know a little bit how huge this result is for this town, for the supporters, for the chairman, for the board. I am totally aware that this is a very special moment.

‘Today was extraordinary. For sure one of the top three I would say of the moments I personally have as a manager of this club.’

Mourinho - who was quick to leave the John Smith’s Stadium in fury - admitted Huddersfield’s physicality became too much for United.

‘Huddersfield played like I like,’ Mourinho said. ‘They played with everything they have. Like it has to be. With everything: aggression, desire, motivation, sacrifice. And we didn’t. So the team which deserved to win, won. Simple.

‘It is a surprise but reality. For me it’s simple to say that the team that deserved to win won.’
