United train without Rooney

Manchester United have trained without striker Wayne Rooney ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

As required by UEFA, United opened the doors of their Carrington training complex for the first 15 minutes of their pre-match session and Rooney, who will learn his fate later on Tuesday over a possible two-match ban for swearing, did not appear.

There was no official word from the Red Devils as to the reason for the 25-year-old England striker's absence and it is still expected that he will play in the first leg.

However, it is possible that United wanted to keep him out of the spotlight as the club decide whether to contest an FA charge over his use of abusive language towards a cameraman in the 4-2 win at Upton Park this weekend. Rooney could be banned for the next Premier League game with Fulham and also the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley if found guilty.

There was good news for United though as long-term absentees Rio Ferdinand and Anderson both trained, raising the likelihood that they will be involved at Chelsea as Sir Alex Ferguson's men look to gain a positive result that would leave them well placed to secure a semi-final encounter with either Inter Milan or Schalke.

The second leg will played at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

Vidic: Rekor Bagus Menguntungkan Chelsea

Bola.net - Nemanja Vidic mengakui jika dominasi Chelsea atas Manchester United di Stamford Bridge dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, akan memberi mereka keuntungan psikis jelang bentrok keduanya di Liga Champions tengah pekan ini.

United tak pernah menang di kandang The Blues dalam sembilan tahun, dan mereka harus mengakhiri tren tersebut jika masih berambisi melaju ke semifinal musim ini.

"Dalam hal hasil, ya, mereka memang punya keuntungan karena mereka punya rekor bagus melawan kami," ujar bek asal Serbia itu.

"Tapi ini adalah Liga Champions dan arti penting pertandingan tengah pekan ini adalah mencetak gol tandang."

Dan Setan Merah punya bekal positif menyusul penampilan impresif akhir pekan kemarin saat menumbangkan tuan rumah West Ham 4-2 meski sempat tertinggal dua gol terlebih dulu.

"Performa kami kemarin merupakan aspek positif yang besar untuk kami. Kami mencetak empat gol dan memainkan sepak bola yang amat bagus. Kami memang harus memperbaiki sisi pertahanan, namun jika kami mampu bermain seperti itu melawan Chelsea, saya yakin kami akan baik-baik saja," imbuhnya.

"Tentu lebih baik ketika Anda menang dan menyambut pertandingan berikutnya di Liga Champions. Tapi saya rasa konsentrasi kami tak akan berbeda."

Champions League preview: Chelsea v Manchester United



Chelsea will be seeking revenge for their defeat in the 2008 final when they meet Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United claimed their third European crown by defeating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

It was the first and only final appearance to date for Chelsea, with Roman Abramovich's quest to capture one of the biggest prizes in club football now stretching into a seventh year.

French striker Nicolas Anelka and Chelsea captain John Terry missed critical penalties in the shootout defeat.

They remain first-team regulars for the west London club and will be prominent among those seeking redemption over the two legs of the all-English quarter-final.

Chelsea are 11 points off the pace on the English Premier League table and look set to surrender their domestic crown.

They have already conceded the FA Cup after exiting the competition in the fourth round, leaving the Champions League as their last realistic chance of silverware.

United, by contrast, are still competing on three fronts, with the European showdown against Chelsea the next step to emulating their own treble-winning feats of 1999.

In what could prove a major advantage for the home side, Chelsea have a relatively clean bill of health coming into the match - only Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun and Brazilian centreback Alex are in doubt with fitness concerns.

There is no such good fortune for United.

Key man Rio Ferdinand is unlikely to feature, while fellow defenders Rafael, John O'Shea and Wes Brown are also out.

Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher is doubtful with a virus.

Goals from David Luiz and Frank Lampard helped Chelsea come from behind to win 2-1 in the previous meeting - in the Premier League - between the teams on March 1.

In their respective league fixtures on Saturday, United mounted a comeback from 2-0 with 30 minutes left to beat West Ham 4-2 away from home, while Chelsea could only draw 1-1 at Stoke.
