Manchester United have written to supporters travelling to Thursday night's Europa League match against Feyenoord to tell them to 'dress conservatively'.

The fixture will be played in front of a crowd of around 26,000 after the home club cut the capacity of their De Kuip stadium almost in half in an effort to avoid further Uefa sanctions following disturbances at their clash with Roma in February.

And in a message which has been widely interpreted as a warning not to wear United colours, Old Trafford officials have told the 1,400 travelling fans to 'maintain a low profile and avoid areas of potential conflict,' by 'dressing conservatively'.

A special train service is to be laid on after the match to take United's supporters safely to Rotterdam and Amsterdam stations.

Fans have also been told to be wary of the threat of terrorism and to ensure they carry their passports with them at all times.

Supporters are informed that United expect them to be locked in the ground for 30 minutes following the final whistle.

Feyenoord were hit with a two-year suspended sentence, fined £42,000 and ordered to play a match behind-closed-doors following the trouble in their Europa League last 32 clash against the Italians.

During the game, the referee had to halt proceedings after missiles were thrown onto the field from home sections.

Meanwhile, police here are investigating after trouble broke out in Manchester city centre following Saturday's derby.

Two groups of men clashed in the city's Northern Quarter at 6.10pm and officers were called to reports of violent disorder.

Video footage shows the thugs taunting each other before hurling crates, chairs and various other objects.

Punches are traded and one man appears to be kicked while on the floor. The group dispersed when police arrived.

Despite the fact chants of 'City, City' can be heard throughout the clip, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say they are unclear whether those involved were football fans.

Superintendent Dave Pester, said: 'Our investigation is in its early stages and it is not fully understood how this incident began or whether those involved were rival football fans.

'This happened in a busy area during the day when lots of people would have been around and seen something. We would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time, or has any footage of the incident, to contact the police. Violent behaviour like this is completely unacceptable and, if appropriate, we will work with our partners to consider banning orders.'

Police praised the behaviour of the majority of fans following the derby, which City won 2-1.

Marcus Rashford is set to be handed his first start of the season for Manchester United in Thursday’s Europa League tie away to Feyenoord.

The teenage sensation has been used sparingly off the bench so far by new manager Jose Mourinho, but followed up his late winner at Hull last month with an impressive performance as a second-half substitute in the Manchester derby.

Rashford, 18, was overlooked for a place in the starting line-up at Old Trafford despite scoring a hat-trick on his debut for England Under-21s during the international break, but Mourinho said: ‘For me, the next big game is against Feyenoord and the next game he is going to play.

‘I trust him completely. I know his future will be absolutely brilliant.

‘Normally, people look to the football talent but the personality at this level is very, very important and he was showing that immediately.’

‘First of all, he’s 18, he’s still young,’ said Ibrahimovic. ‘He has a lot of time.

‘It’s not like he needs to take over the world today – the club knows that, the coach knows that and the team knows that.

‘There is no need to rush to push him and put him in the heat zone, and put a lot of pressure on him because that can have the opposite effect.

‘Time by time, he will take over everything. It’s about having patience.’
