U18: United 2 WBA 1

United’s Under-18s notched a third consecutive win in the Academy League, courtesy of a goal in each half from Norwegian midfielder Mats Daehli.

Daehli netted the opener with a low finish in the 12th minute, after Jack Barmby picked himself up from a foul to quickly take a free-kick and slot the ball through for the scorer. The Baggies immediately bounced back, however, and had a goal disallowed for offside, shortly before actually equalising from the penalty spot. Jones converted the kick after he was on the receiving end of a clumsy challenge by Reds defender Luke McCullough.

The visitors' attempts to go in front before the break, against the run of play, were thwarted when they had a second effort chalked off by the officials, again for offside. United's Adnan Januzaj also went close to shifting the scoreline from 1-1 when he fired narrowly wide from Gyliano van Velzen's pass.

In an entertaining match screened live on MUTV, United's fluid attacking football cried out for a cutting edge and Daehli eventually provided it for a second time in the 65th minute. Tyler Blackett's cross from the left wing found its way to the far post, where the Norwegian volleyed in off the underside of the bar to make it 2-1 to the Reds.

The scoring ended there, although West Brom - reduced to ten men after Jamie Edge was sent off for dissent, nine minutes from time - appealed in vain for a late equaliser when they knocked the ball out of Liam Jacob's hands onto the post, only for the Reds keeper to gather it again before it could cross the line.

United: Jacob; Weir, Ekangemene, Blackett, McCullough., Rudge, Daehli, Hendrie, Van Velzen, Januzaj, Barmby. Subs: Byrne, Sutherland, Wilkinson, Love.

United began the defence of the FA Youth Cup with a 4-0 success against Torquay in the third round as Paul McGuinness' team hunt a record 11th triumph in the competition.

The Gulls had a long, delayed trip north due to motorway traffic and their nightmare continued from the first whistle at Moss Lane with the Reds' fluid formation causing a host of problems for the defence. Tom Lawrence, back from injury, saw a dipping drive fly just over the top before making the breakthrough 10 minutes later. Jack Barmby's pass allowed the Welshman to turn and lash a low drive wide of Aaron Ibbotson and into the corner of the net.

Lawrence was denied a blatant penalty when up-ended by Kirtys MacKenzie inside the box but Torquay threatened with their first attack of note as Sean Latimer's glancing header was scrambled onto a post by Liam Jacob. Barmby was denied by Ibbotson after a burst forward by Tyler Blackett but he made no mistake when Scott Beattie gifted possession to Lawrence and his pass allowed Barmby to finish emphatically with his left foot. The graceful Adnan Januzaj, whose upright style resembles Arnold Muhren, saw a shot deflected wide as United totally dominated the opening half.

The visitors started the second period with more adventure, the speedy Niall Thompson firing over, but were soon pegged back again by the technically-superior Reds. Barmby worked Ibbotson again and, after Lawrence limped off, an inevitable third goal arrived when Mats Daehli's run led to Barmby hitting the inside of a post and Beattie smashed into his own net with substitute Sam Byrne waiting to pounce.

Many would have expected the Devonian outfit to tire after chasing shadows for so long but, to their huge credit, Geoff Harrop's side continued to battle and refused to buckle under sustained pressure. Gyliano van Velzen did add a fourth with eight minutes remaining, tapping in after substitute Donald Love worked a one-two with Barmby and produced an inviting centre but there was plenty to admire about the visitors' endeavour.

Barmby's late injury left United to end the game with 10 men and there were a number of bruising challenges from both sides, some of which went unpunished by referee David Lawrence. That said, the two sets of players ensured the one-sided tie was always played in the right spirit.
United: Jacob; Weir, Blackett, McCullough, Ekangamene; Daehli, Rudge (Hendrie 53), Januzaj (Love 66), Barmby; Lawrence (Byrne 58), van Velzen. Subs: Coll, Dalley.

United showed real resolve to battle back on three occasions to force a 3-3 draw with Bolton thanks to goals from Jack Rudge, Sam Byrne and Luke Hendrie.

The youngsters' frustrating habit of conceding very early goals this term continued when Rudge tripped Luke Woodland with his right leg inside the box after only 30 seconds. James Caton comfortably beat Liam Jacob from the spot to hand the visitors the perfect start.

Again as has often been the case this season, Paul McGuinness' side responded positively and were back on level terms following an Adnan Januzaj corner. Lewis Fielding could only parry into Rudge's path and the midfielder atoned for conceding the penalty by drilling home.

Bolton restored their lead against the run of play when Zach Clough released Chris Lester and his assured right-footed finish gave Jacob no chance. Mats Daehli rattled the woodwork and, just before the break, United were back on level terms when the Norwegian midfielder fed Hendrie and the full-back's excellent cross allowed Byrne to glance in a header via an upright.

Fielding had problems dealing with a deflected Gyliano van Velzen shot when colliding with his left-hand post and dropping the ball as the Reds pressed after the interval. However, the Trotters took the lead for the third time when a wind-assisted free-kick by Glenn Matthews was palmed into his own net by Jacob.

Jack Barmby could only scoop his shot over the bar following a Januzaj cross from the left and then bent another attempt off target after an immediate impact from substitute Donald Love.

But the pressure told when Love fizzed a dangerous ball across and Hendrie was on hand to tap in a third equaliser. Substitute Kenji Gorre had the best chance for a winner but shot just wide.

United: Jacob; Hendrie, Blackett, McCullough, Ekangamene; Barmby (Gorre 79), Rudge (Love 73), Daehli, Januzaj, van Velzen; Byrne. Subs not used: Rowley, Sutherland, Wilkinson.

United turned on the style as an injury-hit side destroyed Swansea City 5-1 at the Liberty Stadium to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

A stunning first-half display saw the Reds take a three-goal lead into the break courtesy of Jack Barmby, Gyliano van Velzen and Sam Byrne. After van Velzen notched his second four minutes after the interval, Jimmy Loveridge's volley was only ever going to be a consolation and Tyler Blackett blasted in a late howitzer from a short free-kick.

Van Velzen, in probably his most impressive performance of the season, lashed an early shot wide while Barmby was a constant threat - cracking a couple of efforts off target. Loveridge headed over from close range and Jonny Sutherland tipped away a Nathan Waters drive but Barmby again showed his prowess at the other end by forcing a brave stop out of Oliver Davies.

Barmby was not to be denied as he latched onto a hopeful ball forward by Nicolas Ioannou, beat Davies outside the keeper's area and found the net with his trusty left foot for his ninth goal from his last 10 games. Moments later, Mats Daehli raced onto a Barmby pass, with replays showing he was just onside, and squared unselfishly for van Velzen to tap in.

There was still time before the interval for Barmby to play a one-two with van Velzen and see his shot spin off Byrne's heel and into the path of the Irish striker, who made the most of the good fortune by tucking past Davies for a third in a devastating spell of football by the visitors.

After Loveridge spurned a glorious opening right at the start of the second half, van Velzen effectively killed the tie as a contest by producing a slide-rule finish with his left foot following a fine run by full-back James Weir.

A loose header by captain Blackett allowed Loveridge to pull one back by chesting to volley past Sutherland but there were few other scares for the United keeper. Blackett had a penalty appeal rejected after a clash with Jandir Zola and substitute James Wilson had a couple of shots saved whilst also seeing two goals ruled out for offside.

Sutherland was forced into another save to thwart Zola but the holders finished the stronger with as Blackett provided the icing on the cake with a powerful 89th-minute strike after a free-kick was rolled into his path by Wilson. A home quarter-final tie against Tottenham or Charlton will be played later in the month.

United: Sutherland; Weir, Ioannou, Blackett, Ekangamene; Barmby (Wilson 52), Hendrie (Harrop 77), Rudge, Daehli, van Velzen; Byrne (Gorre 80). Subs not used: Wilkinson, Jacob.

United led three times against Wolves but had to settle for a point ahead of Wednesday's big FA Youth Cup tie against Charlton at Old Trafford.

Sam Byrne opened the scoring before James Wilson and Kenji Gorre claimed their first goals of the season in the second half. However, the visitors battled back valiantly on each occasion to exploit some poor defending from set-pieces and capitalise on their height advantage.

Danger-man Liam McAlinden posed an immediate threat but Wilson should have opened the scoring with only three minutes gone, firing inches wide with his left foot after the ball broke kindly to him. The Reds did break through when Rowley fed Gyliano van Velzen and the captain's fine trickery allowed him to get in a cross that was met by an instant near-post finish by Byrne on 13 minutes.

Rowley's cross almost supplied a carbon-copy effort from Byrne but McAlinden was a major influence at the other end, forcing a block out of Nicolas Ioannou with a volley and then hitting the outside of a post from long range. United also survived a goalmouth scramble with Matthew Wilkinson making a vital block while Liam Grimshaw was unable to divert a driven cross from van Velzen on target before half time.

Crucially, Byrne curled a shot just wide after going it alone and, seconds leter, a simple goal levelled matters as Sam Whittall headed a McAlinden centre over Jacob. The home side regained the lead when Byrne's flick allowed Kenj Gorre to jink into the box and Wilson took over to steer past Jonathan Flatt for his first goal of an injury-hit campaign.

The lead lasted only three minutes as a corner bounced off the otherwise outstanding Rowley and left Jacob with no chance but United's response was encouraging with Wilson inches away from finding Byrne in the middle following a neat one-two with Gorre.

And Paul McGuinness' side went ahead for a third time when Gorre showed splendid speed to beat his man down the left and worked the ball onto his right foot to curl a brilliant finish wide of Flatt. It still wasn't enough to see off the powerful visitors as Rowley was booked for re-entering the field of play without the referee's permission. With United still down to 10 men for the resulting free-kick, it was bundled past Jacob by Luke Ifil with no foul called for the robust challenge on the Australian keeper.

United: Jacob; Grimshaw, Ioannou (Dalley 62), Wilkinson, Rowley; Gorre, Ekangamene (Rudge 46), Hendrie, van Velzen (Barmby 69); Byrne, Wilson. Subs not used: Sutherland, Blackett.
